Quick Facts Morningside is in the middle of a battle in the conference standings heading into Saturday’s regular season finale against Dakota Wesleyan. Morningside is tied for fourth with Dordt at 20 points in conference play. Midland is one point ahead of the Defenders and Mustangs for third, and College of Saint Mary is in sixth, two points behind. Morningside scored two goals in the final 61 seconds to tie and then defeat College of Saint Mary 2-1 Wednesday. Morningside is guaranteed a tournament spot regardless of result Saturday, as the Mustangs could place anywhere from 3rd to 5th place. Dakota Wesleyan’s head coach John Hakari is also an immigration attorney in Lincoln, Nebraska.

2023 Game Notes
Head Coach: Tom Maxon (24th season) Maxon has a 206-181-25 record since starting the varsity program in 2000. He has led Morningside to three NAIA national tournament appearances, most recently in 2015 when the Mustangs punched their national tourney ticket with a 2-1 victory over Concordia in the GPAC tournament championship. He was named 2013 GPAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year after guiding the Mustangs to a 14-3-4 record and the GPAC regularseason championship and 2007 GPAC and NAIA Region III Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year after going 17-3-1, winning the GPAC and Region III championships and gaining a second straight national tournament appearance. In 2006, the Morningside went 15-5-1 record and earned their first-ever national berth. Maxon also coached five seasons in the Premier Development League developing a regional finalist squad (1999 Sioux City Breeze) and a national final four (2001 Sioux Falls SpitFire) team. He holds a USSF ‘A’ License and is a 1988 graduate of the University of Southern Maine, where he had a standout soccer career, and earned his master’s degree in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy in 1990.

Head Coach: John Hakari (1st season) Hakari comes to DWU after serving as head coach at Southeast Community College in Nebraska since 2020. During his time with the SCC Storm, Hakari oversaw all aspects of the women’s soccer program, including player development, health and training programs, and all management aspects for the program under the NJCAA. In his first two season with the Storm, he guided them to two regional championships and was named the NJCAA D2 Region 9 Coach of the Year during the 202021 season. While coaching the Storm, Hakari also served as the head coach for various club teams of the Villareal Nebraska Academy. Prior to his coaching roles in the Nebraska area, Hakari worked with the De Pere Select Soccer Club in Green Bay, Wis., for five years. He served as the boys and girls Junior Varsity head coach for LuxemburgCasco High School in Luxemburg, Wis., for two seasons before moving to Lincoln for law school in 2012. Hakari has volunteered as a coach for various Nebraska soccer organizations, including the former Magellan Soccer Club and the YMCA.
