The expiry date of the stamp supercedes your visa. This means you will have to extend your visa and/or conditions of stay before it expires, and it is the date that you must recollect.
Vaccination and Medication Students must check their family physician and make sure they have the most current set of booster shots, such as tetanus and diptheria. The World Health organization (WHO) recommends that all travelers going to developing countries should get hepatitis A vaccinations. Students planning to stay for a year or exceed should get a complete series of booster shots and the vaccination series for both hepatitis A and B. The travelers may also consider getting vaccinated against Japanese encephalitisif as they plan to travel near bordering and rural areas.
All the documents you have must corresponds in details. For example, some students are known by a “western” name or a nickname. However, if the documents from the university carry your “western” name while your passport and visa carry your full name, this may cause problems and will delay the process of immigration as the officers shall ensure that both of the names actually refer to the same person!

Malaria and dengue fever in large cities and tourist areas in Thailand is rarely seen nowadays, but there’s still a risk in the rural and bordering areas, especially near Cambodia and Burma. Nevertheless, you don’t need to take any preventive medications. The WHO has placed Thailand in the category IV, which means the disease has already become drug-resistant. If you take preventive drugs, they can make it more difficult to treat the disease if you do catch it. The best prevention is using mosquito repellent in the risky areas. Please bring either DDT containing products, or purchase sprays that use citronella in Asia. These are the most recommended and effective preventions. Thailand is having problems with the spread of bird flu, and at this time, there is no vaccine against it. Because the Bird Flu transmitted from birds to humans, not humans to humans, risk to farmers and food preparation employees is high for having in contact with raw meat and infected cage birds. There is no problem if the meat has been cooked. For precaution, students should stay away from poultry farms and from aviary exhibits in zoos but should not be overly worried.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Suvarnabhumi Airport, a new international airport located 24 kilometres east of Bangkok was established to replace the old overloaded airport at Don Muang and accommodates all international and flights to Bangkok. The airport was previously available for both international and domestic flights. However, its facility problem result in the reopening of Don Muang Airport for domestic flights with 71 weekly flights moved back initially. How to get to Khon Kaen University Planes: There are 3 flights per day to and from Bangkok's DonMuang Airport (Domestic). A minibus is available from the Khon Kaen airport to KKU and all major hotels. For further information of booking and flight timetable, contact Thai Airway on +66-2-3561111 or http://www.thaiair.com Trains: There are 4 trains per day to and from Bangkok's Hua Lumpong Railway Station. Overnight trains are comfortable with sleeper berths, and airconditioned trains are also availabled. Once you arrive in Khon Kaen, you can take a Sorng-Taew or Tuk-Tuk from the Railway Station to Khon Kaen University or to the city. Again upon arrival into Khon Kaen you can take a Sorng-Taew or Tuk-Tuk from the bus station to Khon Kaen University or to the city. Cars: The road from Bangkok to Khon Kaen is quite good and stretches about 450 km. It shall take you about 5 hours to drive.

Traveling Outside Thailand Non-Thai students who expect to travel out from Thailand during the period of study should obtain a re-entry visa before the departure. If not, your visa will be invalid, and it results to begin the whole process to get the proper student visa at a Thai Embassy or Consulate outside Thailand. Every time you go abroad you must check whether you require a visa to enter the country you intend to visit. Before traveling abroad, you should:
Check that your passport will not be expire while you are away (normally required to have at least 6 months of validity) Keep with you a letter certified your student status from the university and others documents indicate that you can support yourself (e.g. bank statements, sponsor’s letter).
Visa Extension To extend your visa at the Thai Immigration Office, you need the following documents: - A valid passport - Visa extension request form, available at GS-KKU - KKU letter obtained from GS-KKU - A copy of relevant page of your passport (eg. whose ethnic origins lie in China, India and elsewhere. About 7 million people reside in the capital city of Bangkok. Thai (80%), Chinese (10%), Malay (3%), and the rest are minorities (Mons, Khmers, hill tribes) Ethnic Thais form the majority, though the area has historically been a migratory crossroads, and has thus produced a degree of ethnic diversity. Integration is such, however, that culturally and socially there is enormous unity. The Thai can be broken down into various regional groups including the main Thai, northeastern, northern, and southern Thai with their own culture and ways of life. The main Thai culture has become more dominant due to official government policy which was designed to assimilate and unify the disparate Thai in spite of ethnologic unity.
Language Spoken and written Thai is largely incomprehensible to the casual visitor. However, English is widely understood, particularly in Bangkok where it is almost the major commercial language. English and some European Languages are spoken in most hotels, shops and restaurants in major tourist destinations, and Thai-English road and street signs are found nationwide. Central Thai or Thai Klang is the main Thai spoken language and is largely used nowadays. However, the dialects are exist in provincial parts with their commonly understandable Thai Klang. Religion: Buddhism (95%), Muslim (4%), others (1%)
Government Thailand has had a constitutional monarchy since 1932, but all governments acknowledged The King as the chief of state. Parliament is composed of 2 houses, The House of Representatives and the Senate. Both representatives and senators are elected by the people. A prime minister elected from among the representatives leads the government. The country is divided into 76 provinces. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration comes under an elected governor. Appointed provincial governors administer the other 76 provinces (Changwat), which are divided into districts (Amphoe), sub-districts (Tambon) and villages (Mu Ban).
National Flag The red, white, and blue stripes symbolize the nation, Buddhism, and the monarchy, respectively.

Time The time in Thailand is seven hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (+7 hours GMT).
Climate Thailand enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons-hot and dry from February to May (average temperature 34 degrees Celsius and 75% humidity); rainy with plenty of sunshine from June to October (average day temperature 29 degrees Celsius and 87% humidity); and cool from November to January (temperatures range from 32 degrees Celsius to below 20 degrees Celsius with a drop in humidity). Much lower temperatures are experienced in the North and Northeast during nighttime. The South has a tropical rainforest climate with temperatures averaging 28 degrees Celsius almost all year round. Currency The Thai currency is the Baht. There are 100 satangs in 1 baht. (B=baht). Notes are issued in denominations of B1000 (gray), B500 (purple), B100 (red), B50 (blue), B20 (green), and B10 (brown-rarely use now). There are 10, 5 and 1 baht coin, and 50 and 25 satang. Most foreign currencies and traveller cheques are easily changed at banks, hotels or moneychangers at the airport. All major credit cards are widely accepted throughout the kingdom. Food Thai food is eaten with a fork and spoon. Even single dish, such as fried rice with pork or steamed rice topped with roasted duck, is served in bite-sized slices or chunks obviating the need for a knife. The ideal Thai meal is a harmonious blend of the spicy, the subtle, the sweet and sour, and is meant to be equally satisfying to eye, nose and palate. A typical meal might include a clear soup (perhaps bitter melons stuffed with minced pork),a steamed dish (mussels in curry sauce), a fried dish (fish with ginger), a hot salad (beef slices on a bed of lettuce, onions, chillies, mint and lemon juice) and a variety of sauces into which food is dipped. This would be followed by sweet desserts and/or fresh fruits such as mangoes, durian, jackfruit, papaya, grapes or melon.

Electricity The electric current is 220 volt AC (50 cycles) throughout the country. Many different types of plugs and sockets are in use. Travellers with electric shavers, hair dryers, tape recorders and other appliances should carry a plug adapter kit. The better hotels will make available 110-volt transformers.
Tap water Tap water is clean but drinking from it directly should be avoided. Bottled water is recommended.
Clothing Light, cool clothes are sensible but a jacket is needed only for formal meetings and dining in top restaurants. Shorts (except knee length walking shorts), sleeveless shirts, tank tops and other beach-style attire are considered inappropriate dress when not actually at the beach or in a resort area.
Weights & Measures The metric system is used throughout Thailand. Numerals on vehicle speed ohmmeters, highway markers and speed limits all indicate kilometres.
Driving in Thailand Traffic in Thailand drives on the left side of the road. Most Thai drivers are well mannered, almost polite, be it up to a certain level. Despite this, traffic is rather hectic in and around busy Bangkok where calm driving is not really appreciated. On many rural roads or even in Bangkok's small alleys, you will find motorcycles, cars and occasionally your 12 wheel trucks maneuvering against (one way) traffic. Driving around Thailand's country side at night is considered to be hazardous, especially on holidays and long weekends. There are no street light and the trucks or drunk driving are always seen.
Thai Greeting: The ‘WAI’ This characteristic Thai way of greeting is one of the most, if not the most, beautiful ways of contact ever devised to promote understanding among human beings. Done well and gracefully, even for the umpteenth time by the same person to another person, the one being ‘waied to’ cannot help but feel a certain warmness for the person ‘waiing’. When being wai-ed to, you would be considered impolite if you didn't return or at least acknowledge the wai

Do's and Don't in Thailand The Monarchy : Thai people have a deep, traditional reverence for the Royal Family, and a visitor should be careful to show respect for the King, the Queen and the Royal Children. Religion : Visitors should dress neatly in all religious shrines. They should never go topless, or in shorts, hot pants or other unsuitable attireIt is acceptable to wear shoes when walking around the compound of a Buddhist temple, but not inside the chapel where the principal Buddha image is kept. Each Buddha image, large or small, ruined or not, is regarded as a sacred object. Never climb onto one to take a photograph or do anything which might indicate a lack of respect. Buddhist monks are forbidden to touch or be touched by a woman, or to accept anything from the hand of one. If a woman has to give anything to a monk, she first hands it to a man, who then presents it. Social Norms : Thais don't normally shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a wai. Generally a younger person wais an elder, who returns it. Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body, literally and figuratively. Therefore, avoid touching people on the head and try not to point your feet at people or an object. It is considered very rude. Shoes should be removed when entering a private Thai home. Public displays of affection between men and women are frowned upon. Special Advice : - Beware of unauthorised people who offer their services as guides. - Observe all normal precautions as regards to personal safety, as well as the safety fof your belongings. Walking alone on quiet streets or deserted areas is not recommended. Be sure that all your valuables-money, jewellery, and airline tickets are properly protected from loss. - Drop your garbage into a waste container. The fine will be imposed on a person who spits, discards cigarette stubs, or drops rubbish in public areas. - Do not get yourself involved with drugs. Penalties for drug offences are very severe in Thailand. - Do not support any manner of wild animal abuse. Never purchase any products or souvenirs made from wild animals including reptiles like snakes, monitor lizards, and also turtle shell and ivory. Avoid patronizing local restaurants that serve wild animal delicacies. It is against the law to slaughter wildlife for food in Thailand.
National public holidays in Thailand The Thai Calendar has adopted the western calendar to divide the year into days, weeks and months, using Thai names for these units. Years are numbered according to the Buddhist Era (BE) which commenced 543 years before the Christian era. For example, 2003 AD is BE 2546 and 2004 is BE 2547. National public holidays Thailand's national public holidays are linked to religious or agricultural traditions and follow the lunar calendar, therefore the dates for some of the holidays change each year. 11

Khon Kaen University (KKU) was one of four regional universities established in 1964 as part of a decentralized development plan for higher education in Thailand. The campus is located in the Northwestern sector of Khon Kaen, just a few kilometers from the center of the city. Situated in a most attractive park, the campus covers approximately 900 hectares.
From small beginnings, KKU has grown enormously and is today home to seventeen faculties, three academic support centers, 2 academic service centers, a hospital and a research institute. In addition several new institutes are currently in pipeline and will, in time, open the University's door further to the public and increase its roles, responsibilities and commitments to the region around. The University Seal, Symbolic Tree and Color The KKU Seal is Prathart Phnom, the Holy Relics Pagoda As for the KKU Seal, His Excellency the Nobleman, Phraya Anumarn Ratchathon designated Mr. Bhinit Suwannaboon to design the KKU Seal. At first stage the seal was designed as Prathart Phnom Flanked at both sides with golden puppyhead tailed with flamed pattern, and at the underside of the Pagoda was the University name inscribed on silk taffeta. Subsequently, His Excellency the Nobleman, Phraya Anumarn Ratchathon had brought up the University Seal design to consult with the designer and scholars of the Royal Academy. It was deemed appropriate to substitute the golden puppyhead with gods in gesture of conferring auspices to the institute. The name of the university is inscribed on the log instead of silk taffeta. Still, the background is divided into 3 spaces signifying the 3 goodnesses of students: • Knowledge signifies Progressive Knowledge • Manner signifies Gracious Manners • Wisdom signifies the Wisdom Generated Education and Thought.

Transportation in Campus The university has coordinated with the private sector in providing mini-bus for convenience of students and public. Accommodation Within the university there provide the dormitory for international students who have requested to stay on campus. The charge is according to size of room, quality, and facilities. Normally, the oncampus dormitory ranges from 3,000-5,000 Baht per month. (See Daily Living section- University Accommodation) Note - It is very important for student to confirm arrival date at least 2 weeks prior departure. Or else the dormitory may become unavailable. In that case, the university would take every effort to find a private dormitory instead (which usually unavailable). Or you have to take the temporary accommodation at your own expense until the room is arranged. (See below) - University do not provide accommodation for students’ family or follower. Therefore, you will have to find the off-campus houses by yourself. - Renting accommodation need advance payment and deposit costing 2 times to the rental rate. Language Provision All international students have to meet the criteria as to Graduate School’s admission requirement (further details, visit http://inter.gs.kku.ac.th - Admission Requirement). Once students don’t meet the criteria on English Test, they are required to take the English class that provided by Graduate School. The class comprises of 3 levels for Doctoral Degree and one for the Master; 411 711 Reading in English for Graduate Student. Note that passing the course is a condition on to degree completion.

International students may optionally attend Thai class, which will provide basic skill on speaking, listening, reading and writing Thai. You can check for the class schedule at Graduate School prior the beginning of semester.
Registration Students status would be complete after registering during the Orientation. Details of the registration will be announced later along with the orientation program.
KKU Office Hours Offices in Khon Kaen University are usually open daily at 8.30 - 16.30 hours and 08:30 - 15:30 hours for banks, but close on weekend and public holidays. Some specifically open on Saturday such as post office but only a half of day.

Academic Service Center Located on 5th and 6th floor of Academic Center Building, provides academic knowledge, technical skills, and experience for people in the Northeast. Through its series of both long and short training programs, it seeks to develop productive and self-reliant citizenry whilst also enhancing the relationship between the University and the regional community. There are four divisions within the Center, namely: Office of the Secretary, Training and Studying Service, Distance Learning, and Academic and Information Science.
Research Centers of Excellence Twelve research centers of excellence have the objective to develop and strengthen research, moreover effectively fulfill the needs of local community. The Centers are divided into five categories, which include Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Technology, and Social and Pluralism in the Mekong Region.
Training Wide range of training course is offered for graduate students in order to develop skill involving postgraduate studies. Institute of Learning and Teaching Innovation (ILTI) The responsibility of the Institute is to develop and advance the learning and teaching (L&T) skills of students and instructors of KKU as well as those of other governmental and privatized organizations. In addition, it is to become the center of transmitting new initiatives for L&T to the public. The Institute’s vision and mission encompass advancement of L&T skills in conjunction with acquiring moral principles, student centered learning, self learning and implementation of advanced technologies. 20
Golden Jubilee Convention Hall The Hall was established by KKU in commemoration of the historic 50th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne. It can accommodate 3,000 people with an additional 1,100 seats on the mezzanine level. Moreover, it is equipped with state-of-the-art multimedia technology and light & sound and audio-visual systems for international events, conferences, exhibitions, concerted and entertainment shows. Furthermore, building automation and security systems such as climate control and emergency power supply mean convenience as well as safety.
The Art and Culture Museum Located opposite the Hall. It is the center of art and culture exhibitions, including cultural activities, art and handicraft, and co-operation with other institutions. The Musuem also provides an amphitheatre, two temporary exhibition rooms, and a permanent exhibition room organized as an interactive museum. The Musuem valuably collects Northeastern heritage, as well as represents itself as an educational museum and an information center for visitors.
The Research and Development Institute (RDI) The RDI was established in 1978 to manage research activities in KKU, and became the center of research and development of the Northeast Thailand in 1981. The RDI has driven forwards hundreds of projects with financial support from USAID and CIDA. It is in charge of linking networking of public, private, and non-governmental organizations to manage the sustainable development in Northeastern Thailand.
The Mekong Institute The Mekong Institute is a unique facility providing specialized training for key public and private sector personnel in the fields of economic and administrative reform. Located on the campus of Khon Kaen University in Northeast Thailand, it serves countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) of Asia, which includes Cambodia, Laos PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Yunnan Province of China. 21
The University Commercial Complex (usually called ‘Complex’) is located in the center of the campus. Services include the University Book Center, the University Co-op store, dining hall, pharmacy, ATM machines, photo labs, photocopiers, a laundromat, several hairdressers, and many other shops and services.
Sports and Recreations The University provides a range of sports facilities for general use. There is a large hall for basketball, volleyball and badminton with further provisions for judo, table tennis, and aerobics. Outdoor playing facilities include grass pitches for football, hockey, rugby and softball as well as tennis courts and swimming pools. The sports facilities are primarily used for academic courses, but when not in use are available for general use and academic recreation. Students who want to spend leisure time with sport can join the 14 sport clubs in the campus. The clubs comprise of softball, volleyball, tennis, takraw, badminton, petanque, judo, hogkey, shooting, fencing, water sport, table tennis, tae kwan do, and rugby football.
Health Services Subsidized by the University, the Students Health Service provides general practitioner medical care for students who have paid the required fee upon enrollment. Consultations are free and staff also advise on a full range of other matters such as immunizations, overseas travel and contraception.

Srinagarind Hospital The University Hospital, one of the most modern and prestigious hospitals in the country and the most modern and largelst hospital in northeast region. The Hospital is part of Faculty of Medicine, providing service for student (please show student ID card for request for service). Some case is free service, but for serious case, the student needs to pay as the rate of the hospital. Located in front of the university on Friendship Highway with all transportations in campus get through. Hospital of Dentistry Located at Faculty of Dentistry, providing dentistry service for students and people. Medical care costs around 50-60 Baht, but pay as the rate of the hospital for specific case. Service hours: Weekdays 8.30-16.30 hrs. except Wednesday afternoon Mon-Fri 17.00–20.00 hrs. The applying examination in January is for those students who will start their study in the first semester (June), whereas the examination in August is for those students who will start their study in the second semester (November). Registration To register for your degree programs, it is very important to follow the academic calendar. The Office of Registrar has provided e-registration system so that students can register at http://reg.kku.ac.th When log on the system for the first time, your username and password are your student ID. Once you log on the system, you can change your password later. Please check well for your subject code, credits, and group before registration. Once you have confirmed your registration, you can not change it and you must pay the fee for the current registration. Your registration will be completed only when the tuition fees have been paid at the bank. If you register for more or less than the allowed credits, you shall submit a request with an approval form the Dean before you register. It is essential, therefore, that you check the academic calendar so that you can plan your arrival prior the registration deadline. Thesis Submission To ensure that your submitted thesis is correspond to the University’s format and criteria, Graduate School has full responsibility to check and make sure that you have submitted the correct form. All theses, before being bound, must go through this process, also being signed by the Dean of Graduate School. Once you have passed a Thesis Defense and a thesis has been submitted to Graduate School. The Thesis Section’s staffs will take care of format checking process. The steps of thesis submission and format checking are as follows: -
Students submit a thesis, after passing a Thesis Defense. The Thesis Section’s staffs preliminary check for its completeness, such as Thesis Certifications, others needed Forms, etc. The staffs check and specify the mistakes of thesis format, such as pagination, citations, etc. Graduate School returns the thesis to the students to be corrected (the students must come to take it by themselves, at the date specified by the Graduate School) The students correct the specified mistakes within 45 days. The students return the corrected thesis to the Graduate School.
The process will go on and on like this until there is no mistakes to be corrected anymore. The thesis shall be checked again and again, if the students do not correct the mistakes specified by the Graduate School. As the students’ thesis is complete, Graduate School’s staffs will assign the thesis’s number, and return the thesis with the Dean’s signature to the students to be bound. Once the students submit the bound thesis, the process is finish, and you just wait for graduation from the University’s Council. Graduate Research Journal The journal was established as an opportunity to publish original research studies. It widely accepts articles from various academic disciplines and substantive fields. Students or researchers, both inside and outside the University, wishing to publish their original research shall contact a Graduate School Journal’s staff, and send the articles via mail or email. The articles will attain the peerreviewed process, which takes 1-2 months before it is published. Graduate Research Journal has been published 4 books a year. Research Scholarship Graduate School offers 2 scholarships for international students: Thesis Support Scholarship The scholarship offers a financial support for research activities which is a part of thesis, with purpose to promote and support outstanding theses. Students expect to get the scholarship are strongly required to submit the project for consideration. The scholarship includes travel expenses, research materials, and accommodation. The support will not exceed 100,000 Bahts for Doctoral Thesis, and not exceed 50,000 Bahts for Master’s Thesis. The Thesis Support Scholarship is available twice a year; June and November. Thesis Presentation Scholarship The scholarship offers a financial support for research presentation both national and international level. Students expect to get the scholarship must carry out an acceptance for publication in academic journal/conference which has peer reviewed. The financial amount will depend on the type of presentation and the attended conference. Normally, if the conference is national, the scholarship will include a registration fee, accommodation, and transportation. Annual Research Conferences Graduate Research Conference has been performed annually to promoting graduate research in all fields of study. We welcome all presenters from all institutues and nations to present the research in a conference, also giving awards for the excellent research. The Conference additionally provides an opportunity to publish students’ work in a Conference Proceeding. The students wishing to attain the Conference is invited to submit manuscripts for peer-reviewed process. The presentations can be presented optionally as Poster or Oral. Accepted paper will be published in the Conference Proceedings, and the best paper will be selected to publish in Graduate School Journal. Visa Extension During the period of study, you may need to extend your visa in order to complete the thesis or to continue on your research. Graduate School’s International Relation staffs are responsible for this immigration matters. Students who wish to extend your visa must do as follows: - Preparing the letter for visa extension that the student needs to submit at the Immigration Office, which located in Bangkok and Nongkhai Province. - Contact Graduate School for the letter with a copy of passport, student ID card, and 1,900 Baht for visa payment (pay at the Immigration Office). The first visa allows students to stay in Thailand for 3 months, but subsequent extension will allow to stay for 1 year. - The student who leave Thailand and want to return with the same visa status must submit the Re-entry form before leaving. Graduate study program Graduate Diploma Program The degree program that enhances expertise and professional competency for those who holds graduate degree or equivalent. This comprises of courses totaling at least twenty-four credits. Master’s Degree Program The degree program that enhances academic progress and research into diverse areas at a higher level thanundergraduate. This comprises of courses totaling at least thirty-six credits. It is divided into two plans. Plan A: This plan targets the research area by assigning the thesis, and may have two types: Type A (1) consists of a thesis credit that should be at least thirty-six credits. The program may assign either courses to be studied or other, non-credit activities; Type A (2) consists of a thesis credit which should be at least twelve credits, plus other credits for courses of not less than twelve credits. Plan B: This is a non-thesis program. However, the student must complete at least three credits (and not more than six credits) for an independent study and pass a comprehensive examination. Doctoral Degree Program The degree program that enhances academic progress and research into diverse areas at a higher level than Master’s degree. The total number of credits for the whole course should be not less than seventy-two for those with a Bachelor’s degree, whilst those with a Master’s degree should attempt forty-eight credits. There are two types of study: Type 1: This emphasizes research and production of a thesis which expands academic knowledge into new areas. Students can be assigned courses, or other non-credit activities. It is divided into two groups: Type 1(1) for those holding a Bachelor’s degree have to cover seventy-two credits for their thesis; and Type 1(2) for those holding a Master’s degree have to cover forty-eight credits for their thesis. Type 2: This places emphasis on a qualified academic thesis other than assigned course study. It is divided into two groups: Type 2(1) for those holding a Bachelor’s degree have to cover forty-eight credits for their thesis and have to study other courses worth not less than twenty-four credits; and Type 2(2) for those holding a Master’s degree have to cover thirty-six credits for their thesis and have to study other courses worth not less than twelve credits. Course type Regular Course (R) This is a regular-hour course, operated during the office hours from Monday to Friday and taught by using Thai language as a medium of instruction. Special Course (S) This special course can be operated on the weekend or after office hours, and taught by using Thai language as a medium of instruction. English/International Course (E/I) This course is designed for international students and also Thai students who intend to gain international experiences in addition to the subject knowledge. All courses are taught by using English language as a medium of instruction.
Multidisciplinary Program The Multidisciplinary Program of Khon kaen University is under the management of Graduate School, comprising of two programs. Master of Rural Development Management 30
The Master of Rural Development Management (MRDM) is a multidisciplinary program under the management of Graduate School of Khon Kaen University. The program is designed to raise multidisciplinary understanding of issues and problems confronting rural societies in developing countries, and to identify approaches for their betterment. The MRDM program is flexible and allows some degree of student specialization in their particular areas of undergraduate study and/or previous work experience. Most graduate students in this program came from several countries, such as Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Bhutan, Myanmar, Indonesia, Nepal, and Sri Langka. This program is a one year full-time program (starting in October each year), divided into three semesters, 12-15 weeks per each semester. Open for application all year. Doctor of Philosophy Program in Public Health This is a joint degree program among seven health sciences-related faculties under the management of Graduate School. It is an advanced educational program for health professionals from various backgrounds related to medical and health sciences. Khon Kaen is situated in the heart of Northeastern Thailand, approximately 440 kilometres from Bangkok. The recorded history of the city began in the reign of King Rama I in 1797 although archaeological evidence suggests that the area was occupied a thousand years earlier during the Dvaravati period. Nevertheless, the city represents Esan heritage until nowadays. Today the number of inhabitants in the Muang district (including the city and its immediate suburbs) is approximately 352,000. Indeed, Khon Kaen is currently one of the fastest growing cities in the Northeast due, not only to its central position, but also to a government initiative to promote the city as a gateway to Indochina. Khon Kaen has been promoted as a regional institutional centre, as well as one of the nine industrial cities of Thailand. The province is also a hometown to more than 200 government administrative agencies and state enterprises that operate at the regional level.
Transportation If you want to go to downtown from campus, you can take a blue “songthaew” (mini-bus) #8, red songthaew #16 and air-conditioning yellow bus #15 in front of Food & Service Center, which is located opposite to the Instructional Resources Center or Central Library, or anywhere on campus just know the direction of the “songthaew” or bus route and on which side of the road to wait for it. A green songthaew #4 opposite the Srinagarind Hospital on the Friendship (Mitraparp) Highway is another choice to downtown. However, beware of the time, as they all stop coming onto the campus around 7:00 or 8:00 pm . After this time, you have to find your own way back on to campus. Usually this means

taking a “tuk-tuk” (motorized three-wheel vehicle). The price should be around 60-80 Baht. The “tuk tuk” will drive you everywhere, as far as the airport. Within downtown, you can take “songthaew” to go from one place to another, with its cost of 8 Baht. Sensing traditional life of Khon Kaen, you may choose a “samlor”, a non-motorized three-wheel vehicle, costing around 20 Baht (but you can always bargain) to wander around the downtown. For those who would like to go to the Big C supermarket, free buses take you there from the ordinary bus station, and from the food & service university complex on campus at 11:30 am and 4:30 pm . Song Taew Song Taew (also known as baht buses) are privately owned, government endorsed pickup trucks that have two bench-style seats in the back and are covered in an attempt to keep out the elements. It is the cheapest form of transportation in Khon Kaen, with at least 18 different routes (probably more) servicing the city. Song Taew are distinguished by their color, being green, red, yellow, white & blue (yes, there are more, discover by yourself). They can be waved to stop at ANY point along their route, and they can be stopped ay ANY points as you press its bell button. Getting off at the junction or road corner is very dangerous. It is really unrecommended to do so (do not follow some Khon Kaen people who did it) if you don’t want to be charged by the police. Song taew drivers generally have a total disregard for traffic laws, that it can be very interesting to ride on them. Also at "rush hour" (7-8 AM, 5-6 PM) the trucks tend to be so over-loaded that the front wheels bounce off the ground. Song taew runs from 5:00 AM until 9:00 PM. Song taew routes are very confusing. Passengers should look for a number on various parts of the bus (such as the door or its top) to determine their route. The number can be placed in more than one location, so finding the route number can be difficult. TUK TUK The "TUK TUK" is a small car with three wheels. The engine is a two stroke engine, petrol or gas powered. "TUK TUK" are really a tourist attraction. Sometimes provincial "TUK TUK" have a different look that Bangkok TUK TUK, and few women are driving "TUK TUK". When buses reach their destination, "TUK TUK" drivers surround the passengers in order to convince them to sit in their car. Sometimes they even take the bags into their "TUK TUK" before any agreement. Often tourists can be seen inside. Before sitting inside, one should negotiate the price. The price for a TUK TUK in Khon Kaen is quite reasonable. A trip from downtown to Khon Kaen Airport is supposed to be lower than 80 Baht, and for a trip from downtown to Khon Kaen University is less than 70 Baht. Riding on a TUK TUK in Khon Kaen is quite comfortable, convenient, and faster than a shuttle bus, it is more expensive as it is direct and does 35
not stop on route. However, it is one of the interesting choices for sightseeing in Khon Kaen, and a fantastic experience. Price is of course higher for foreign tourists. It can be up to 2 or 3 times the price for short distances, so haggle. Another tricky thing to get 10 more Baht is for the driver to claim to have no small change. Sam Lor (Three wheels) Sam lors are three-wheeled tricycles with a covered seat in the back that are powered by the individual driving them. Years ago, before the development of tuk-tuks, they were the only way to get around town. Nowadays they tend to be a nuisance and very dangerous weaving in and out of modern day traffic. Their prices tend to be slightly lower than tuk-tuk's, and really are not feasible transportation in the ever-growing community. They should be avoided unless a photographic opportunity presents itself, or you are very sure of your destination. For those driving at night in Khon Kaen be aware that Sam lors are quite common and have no lights or reflective objects so they are extremely difficult to see.
Driving in Khon Kaen If you choose to drive a car or motorcycle, it would be the best to have a license. An International Drivers License is valid for 1 year only. You can drive as a tourist on many foreign drivers licenses, but if you are staying longer you should get a Thai license. You can transfer an International License (and many others) to a Thai one at the licensing office (on Soonrachakan Road, just along from City Hall) for 60 Baht and an hour or so wait. Needed documents include two passport-sized photographs, two copies of your passport and entry VISA (a street vendor outside provides a photocopying machine and polaroid camera), proof of your residence, and a certificate of health. A certificate of health can be obtained from a doctor. You can probably get one for free if you queue at a public hospital. However, if you go to a private clinic and pay for 60 Baht you will get itwithout waiting. The doctor will not even test your eyesight! Make a copy of the certificate of good-health for you may need it again. Proof of residence is best as a letter from the University. Licenses for car and motorcycle are separated! The drivers license is very useful as it is the main identification and can be used instead of your passport on various matters. If you can not transfer an existing license, do not be worried ‘cause the test is very easy anyway. 36
It is unrecommend to drive a car or motorcycle without registration and taxation. Because when you have an accident, you will end up paying all your own medical expenses and those of anyone you hit. The police regularly have random check for helmet wearing for riders (both riders and passengers), as well as drinking excess alcohol and safety belt. So be warned!
Accommodation Accommodations in city are largely provided for visitors, variously from save economical guesthouses to 5 star luxurious hotels. Accommodations in Khon Kaen are quite sufficient, but reservation is recommended especially during public holidays or festival. Online reservation is not largely available. To Rung (night market) is one of the most favourite dining place of Khon Kaen people, located on Klang Muang Rd. near the city market. To Rung is not a restaurant but a night market with various food and things to shop. You can find every kinds of regional food and desert, and its price is generally inexpensive. The market will set from 16.30 – 3.00 hrs.
Insight Khon Kaen Police Station The local district police station of Amphur Muang Khon Kaen located on Klang Muang Rd., center of city opposite Centosa Department Store and Bang Lamphu market. Informer can get there by almost every buses (see bus lines in Directory). Nevertheless, KKU has a police sub-station in campus (located opposite Faculty of Agriculture) that the students can inform at general cases. The emergency call for police is 191 (free call). Bus Station Located on Prachasamosorn Rd. under control of Khon Kaen Land Transportation Authority office. It is a place where intercity buses stop to pick up and drop off passengers. In case of traveling to the district area within Khon Kaen province or to neighboring provinces, traveler could take the buses here which service many times daily and run from very early to very late at night. The bus rate is depending on destination. You can see the location of Khon Kaen police station on the map in Directory (Marked B) Air Conditioned Bus Station Air conditioned buses in Khon Kaen usually provide service from 7.00-24.30 hrs., carry passengers from Khon Kaen to major provinces in the region and Thailand including Bangkok. The bus rate is depeding on touring agency or the class of the bus. Air Conditioned Bus Station located on Klang Muang Rd. opposite Khon Kaen Wittayayon School. Local Attraction Khon Kaen National Museum Kaen National Museum was officially opened by His Majesty King Bhumiphol Adulyadej on the 20th of December, 1972. Most of the exhibitions are concerned with geography, history, archaeology, culture, and ethnology.

The entrance fee is 10 Baht for Thai citizen and 30 Baht for others. The museum close on Monday, Tuesday, and public holiday with operating hours 9.00-16.00 hrs. Phu Wiang National Park Located 90 km northwest of Khon Kaen. Phu wiang is the name of mountain and district in Khon Kean. Royal Forest Department declared this national park on December 8, 1991, becoming the 71th national park of Thailand. The Park covers an area of 325 km, with the most famous 2 Dinosaurs' skeletons and steps are found in this park. Beside this, human skeletons, Iron equipment, the sleep Lord Bhuddha in Thawarawadee Period and also point in before history. The topography on mountain is a big hold of a volcano peak, which covered by dipteracarp and dry evergreen forest. Ubonrat Dam Also know as Pattaya Song (2), a good place for relaxation and sightseeing. You can take a boat ride, or even better get on the bananna boat for joy. Numerous food stalls line the shore of the reservoir, umbrellas and ground mats can be rented to sit on the ground and for shade from the sun. You can get there by Friendship Highway head forward to Udon Thani around 25 km. Turn left with the large sign of dam, and follow the road for a further 25 km. Bat Cave at Phu Pha Man National Park Located at Phu Pha Man district. There are astounding 10,000,000 bats living in the cave on the mountain. Visitors can enjoy the spectacle of the bats leaving their roost and flying from the cave everyday at down. Kingcobra Village A well-known snake show in Thailand, located at Khoksnga village, Amphur Nampong, around 40 km north of Khon Kaen. The visitors will see challenge of life between human and snakes here. One of the most exciting performance is snake-kissing, which become a Guiness Book Record in 1991 and 2006. Pratat Kham Kaen The most venerable religious place where the relic of the Lord Buddha is kept, was located more than 200 years, and nowadays located in Wat Chetiyaphum, Ban Kham, Nampong District. The pagoda was built as the history goes after the dead tamarind which resurrected after being cut for many years. Visitors will also see the paddyfield in different seasons and villagers there. 41

Accommodation Many of our visiting students who stay for more than one term will stay at one of our international accomodation and then move to another facility once they get to know our campus and Khon Kaen better. There are diverse housing options on and near campus for students. Rental rate ranges from 2,500 to 4,000 THB per month, depending on the location, quality of the rooms, and whether it is air-conditioned. Advance payment and deposits are usually no more than 2 times the monthly rent. Normally, a room will run 15 to 25 square meters and is furnished with one single-bed, one wardrobe, and one writing table. You can choose whether you would like a room with or without air conditioning. Considering the climate in Thailand, always choose an apartment with air-conditioning. The University dormitories, located on campus, are available for international students who want to stay on campus, and can be booked by the semester. For 24 students sharing in one of the older halls, the fee is about 1,300 per student per semester (16 weeks). The new halls costs around 3,000 – 5,000 baht per student

Post Office KKU Post Office is located at ground floor (parking lot) of the University Commercial Complex. The Post Office provides a variety of services for students and staffs including buying stamps and sending mail and parcels. The Post Office also has secure mailbox rental at good rates. The mailbox rental ranges around 150 Baht per year and 300 Baht for key guarantee (pay only first time). In Khon Kaen downtown, the main post office is located on the corner of Sri Chan and Klang Muang Roads, next to the Police Station. It is open weekdays from 8.30 am to 4.30 pm, and on Saturdays from 9.00 am to noon, and there is a CAT international phone office attached. KKU’s postcode is 40002
Telephone Regarding international phone calls, there is a 24 hour international phone and fax service office on SoonRatchakan Road (Northern part of town). Students can buy a new mobile phone and SIM card at any mobile shops around Khon Kaen. A new mobile phone costs around 1,500-20,000 Baht, and around 700-2,000 Baht for second hand, depending on its function, brand and trend. SIM card is costing around 50-300 Baht. If choosing pre-paid service, you can buy a refill card at any mobile shops, or most convenient at 7- Eleven minimart. 44

Banks There are several bank offices offer banking services on KKU campus area: 1. The Siam Commercial Bank, KKU Branch, located in front of the Srinagarind Hospital, Friendship Road. 2. The Siam Commercial Bank, Commercial Complex, KKU subbranch, located at Commercial Complex. 3. Bangkok Bank, KKU Branch, located on 1st floor, Srinagarind Hospital. 4. Krungsri Ayudhaya Bank, KKU Branch, located at Central Library. 5. Kasikorn Thai Bank, Commercial Complex, KKU sub-branch, located at Commercial Complex. To open a bank account you need a copy of your passport and acceptance letter. Please bring the original one when involve with banking matters such as deposit, withdraw, exchange, and transfer. Banks usually open 08:30 - 15:30 hours daily, but close on weekends and on public holidays. There are some banks in department stores that are open until 7 pm and some even open on weekends.
Dining Place KKU Food and Service Center (Complex) is not the only one dining place in campus. In general, each faculty has its own canteen that you can sit and have a lunch. Some providing breakfast, but only fews are open for dinner. Most faculties’ canteen are open on weekday. At present moment, you can find numerous dining places around campus with several food options including vegetarian and islam food for Muslim students. Kang Sdal and Lang Ho (means the location at back of dormitory area) are the well-known dining place nearest KKU campus, providing various kinds of food around the clock. Facilities like laundry, stationary, book shop, and internet cafÊ are also available there. Students could get to Kang Sdal by mini-bus no.16 (red color), and mini-bus no.8 (blue color- old line) for Lang Ho area. Or you may prefer a simple flea market (Talad Nad) near the male dormitory with plenty food and things to shop. Muslim students may face difficulty in finding islam food because of few muslim foodshops in campus. One of the few islam foodshop is located at the canteen of Faculty of Education, with the other selling Roti near the U-Center. However, you can order food with no pork from any foodshops in campus, which are safe enough because almost all cooked by vegetable oil. Downtown is another option for dining place. Also, vegetarian and islam foodshops are easily seen there. Please see In and 45

Religion Support Individuals at KKU are free to participate religious practice and worship as to their own faith. However, we do not directly provide a Religious Center but there are still intercessory religious club in the campus, such as Christian Student Club, Catholic Student Club, Muslim Student Club, and also Bhuddist Club. The club provide a place for worship and information on religious activities. You may also being supported by the member, or you can ask them for advice on religious matters. The clubs are located at Student Affair Division, near Security Office and Cafeteria 2. If you are seeking for a church or mosque, both are searchable in downtown and neighboring districts like Ban Pai and Ban Had. The Central Mosque of Khon Kaen located at Ban Samliam areas not too far from the campus. For the churchs, mostly are located within the Christian School; one is on Ha Pruschika Road within the Khon Kaen Christian School and another is in the Holy Redeemer School on Chata Padung Road.
Emergency In the case of a serious accident or illness needing immediate hospital treatment, dial 191 and ask for “Ambulance” or “Rod-Payaban”. This is a national free call which also used to contact the police or fire brigade in emergency.
