M e s s ag e from the Dean As the seventh Dean, I am pleased to provide you with the Mylan School of Pharmacy and the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences 2006-07 Annual Report highlighting the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, students and alumni. The faculty and staff have embraced the new organizational structure and the strategic planning process. They have worked very hard to determine what it takes to make a difference in the educational experience of our students. We continue to attract outstanding students and still serve the Mission of the University in the Spiritan traditions. You will find the accomplishments of our faculty to be very substantial and impressive. Their accomplishments have brought us regional, national and international recognition. We are providing the scientific community with cutting-edge research, which will have an impact on health outcomes in the future. Our Center for Pharmaceutical Technology is setting the standards for quality control processes for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Several faculty have made significant contributions to cancer research and have gained recognition in the public press and in scientific publications. New compounds are being synthesized, new discoveries in drug addiction and the role of dopamine are being explored, and significant contributions to pharmacogenomic and translational research are being made.
This Annual Report illustrates the ways in which the School meets its mission and the Mission of the University through community outreach programs. Through the efforts of the Academic Research Center for Pharmacy Care, pharmacistdirected wellness and disease prevention initiatives have been provided, not only to the University community, but also to the community at large, especially the under-served populations of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. 2006-07 student enrollment continues to show an increase in female students in the program and the distribution of students selecting Duquesne has come largely from Pennsylvania. Students with impressive SAT scores and academic records have been awarded scholarship assistance through the University and the School. The contributions of our students and student organizations continue to be excellent. They have a commitment to the
profession, community service and leadership. Our graduates continue to make career choices that will position them in leadership roles in pharmacy. Community pharmacy practice has been the career choice for most of the 2007 graduates. Fifteen percent of those graduates have chosen to pursue a residency. As you can see, 2006-07 has been another productive year for the School and we hope you will agree. We are very well positioned for the next academic year to be as successful.
Sincerely,
J. Douglas Bricker, Ph.D. Dean
The vision that has been set for the revitalization of the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum includes a top-down approach, placing advanced experiential education at the pinnacle of pharmacy education at Duquesne, and determining how better to prepare our students in the basic, pharmaceutical, clinical and administrative sciences. I would like to thank the Dean’s Advisory Council, chaired by Michele Belsey, for their critical evaluation of our programs, initiatives and progress. They have given us valuable insight as we advance the strategic plan of the School. We are very appreciative of the donations and funding from alumni, friends and corporations. Without their support, many of the new initiatives would not be sustainable. Also, the contributions to student scholarships help tremendously in an era where the cost of private education continues to escalate. Our alumni and other pharmacists who participate as preceptors for our introductory and advanced pharmacy experiential education courses are essential to the success of the academic mission of the School. We thank them for the time they devote to giving back to the profession.

respect for diversity, preparing students to deliver medication therapy management services (MTMS), and establishing research priorities for the two divisions were identified as areas of concentration. In January 2007, Dean J. Douglas Bricker set the vision for Strategic Plan 2010 to encompass two large domains: Enhance the quality of the programs and Promote the quality of the programs. He has assigned the task of developing specific strategic objectives and an action plan to address baseline target goals, timeline for completion and areas of responsibility to the newly formed Academic Advisory Committee that includes academic research and program directors and the chair of the curriculum committee. The Dean stated that “the continued success of the School will depend on its ability to promote the strengths of the programs, including a solid academic reputation, productive research programs that encourage research opportunities for students, and partnerships with the local community through service initiatives.” STRATEGIC PLAN 2010

Academic Advisory Committee Recommendations The Committee listed four strategic areas of focus: Learning/Teaching Culture The Academic Advisory Committee recommended the advancement of a learning culture in the Mylan School of Pharmacy; to be defined as a culture that
7

promotes student engagement, active student involvement, ethical behavior and problem solving. Such a culture emphasizes the interface between practice and academics through the analysis of evidencebased literatures in pursuit of patient care. Such a culture shifts, as much as is feasible, the responsibility for learning to the student. Medication Therapy Management The Academic Advisory Committee recommended the following structure for the promotion of Medication Therapy Management within the program. A team composed of PYI, PYII, and PYIII students under the supervision of a practitioner will follow an assigned family group over the course of their career at Duquesne. Each team will be referred to as the “Smith Family” Medication Therapy Management Consultants. The goal of the team will be to provide ongoing medication therapy management. Cultural Competence The Academic Advisory Committee recommended that the Medication Therapy Management Family Teams be utilized as vehicles for student assimilation of the issues and responsibilities of a culturally competent practitioner. As the families in this program will come from diverse backgrounds, this initiative provides hands-on experience in this area. Interdisciplinary Research The Academic Advisory Committee recommended that interdisciplinary research be enhanced via the following mechanisms: n recruitment
of new faculty in both the basic sciences and the clinical, administrative and social sciences with a focus on individuals capable of engaging in interdisciplinary research
n forums
established for the intellectual exchange of ideas
n new
and strengthened relationships with other schools on campus (nursing, health sciences, psychology, etc.)

Duquesne University is the world’s only Spiritan university, and one of America’s leading Catholic institutions with an international reputation for excellence in liberal and professional education. The University was founded in 1878 by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (the Spiritans) who maintain an active role in Duquesne’s administration, in our classrooms, and in countless ministries on campus and across the world. Led by our mission and built upon a strong ethical foundation, Duquesne is committed to educating future leaders who are uniquely prepared to contribute value and expertise to their professions – and to society. Beyond career preparation, we provide our students with opportunities to give of themselves in other ways – to individuals, to families and to causes they value. In doing this important work, we offer an experience to our undergraduate students that embodies three fundamental hallmarks of a strong character: mind, heart and spirit.
