programs and Promote the quality of the programs. He has assigned the task of developing specific strategic objectives and an action plan to address baseline target goals, timeline for completion and areas of responsibility to the newly formed Academic Advisory Committee that includes academic research centers and program directors and the chair of the curriculum committee.

The Strategic Plan 2010

At the Annual Faculty Retreat, faculty were asked to reflect on the accomplishments of the Strategic Plan 2005 and to review ACPE Standards 2007, AACP Roadmap 2015, and various Institute of Medicine reports in preparation for the development of the 2010 Plan. Promoting cultural competence and respect for diversity, preparing students to deliver medication therapy management services (MTMS), and establishing research priorities for the two divisions were identified as areas of concentration. In January 2007, Dean J. Douglas Bricker set the vision for Strategic Plan 2010 to encompass two main domains: Enhance the quality of the

The Dean stated that “the continued success of the School will depend on its ability to promote the strengths of the programs, including a solid academic reputation, productive research programs that encourage research opportunities for students, and partnerships with the local community through service initiatives.” The outline for the Plan is reflected in the chart.

ad minist ration Recommendations from the Academic Advisory Committee There were five strategic areas of focus: Learning/Teaching Culture

Interdisciplinary Research

The Academic Advisory Committee recommends the advancement of a learning culture in the Mylan School of Pharmacy; a culture that promotes student engagement, active student involvement, ethical behavior and problem solving. Such a culture emphasizes the interface between practice and academics through the analysis of evidence-based literatures in pursuit of patient care. Such a culture shifts, as much as is feasible, the responsibility for learning to the student.

The Academic Advisory Committee recommends that interdisciplinary research be enhanced via the following mechanisms:

Medication Therapy Management The Academic Advisory Committee recommends the following structure for the promotion of Medication Therapy Management within the program. A team composed of PIII, PIV, and PV students under the supervision of a practitioner will follow an assigned family group over the course of their career at Duquesne. Each team will be referred to as the “Smith Family” Medication Therapy Management Consultants. The goal of the team will be to provide ongoing medication therapy management. Cultural Competence/Diversity The Academic Advisory Committee recommends that the Medication Therapy Management Family Teams be utilized as vehicles for student assimilation of the issues and responsibilities of a culturally competent practitioner. As the families in this program will come from diverse backgrounds, this initiative provides hands-on experience in this area.

5

Mylan School of Pharmacy

(1) recruitment of new faculty in both the basic sciences and administrative, social and clinical sciences capable of engaging in interdisciplinary research (2) forums established for the intellectual exchange of ideas (3) new and strengthened relationships with other schools on campus (nursing, health sciences, etc.) (4) mentoring of new faculty with a focus on interdisciplinary research (5) increased availability of seed monies (6) new and strengthened relationships with community partners in the Western PA region (7) focus on interdisciplinary research in teaching pedagogy Continuous Professional Development The Academic Advisory Committee recommends that the continuous professional development (CPD) include the development and implementation of goals and objectives to meet School needs and ACPE Accreditation Standards. CPD would enhance faculty, alumni, preceptor, and student pharmacists’ professional skills and knowledge to positively improve pharmacists impact on patient health and curriculum outcomes.
