The Strategic Plan 2010
In January 2007, Dean J. Douglas Bricker set the vision for Strategic Plan 2010 to encompass two large domains: Enhance the quality of the programs and Promote the quality of the programs. He assigned the task of developing specific strategic objectives and an action plan to address baseline target goals, timeline for completion and areas of responsibility to the Academic Advisory Committee.
The Dean stated that “the continued success of the School will depend on its ability to promote the strengths of the programs, including a solid academic reputation, productive research programs that encourage research opportunities for students, and partnerships with the local community through service initiatives.” The outline for the Plan is reflected in the chart.

ad minist ration Recommendations from the Academic Advisory Committee There were five strategic areas of focus: Learning/Teaching Culture
Interdisciplinary Research
The Academic Advisory Committee recommends the advancement of a learning culture in the Mylan School of Pharmacy. Learning culture is defined as a culture that promotes student engagement, active student involvement, ethical behavior and problem solving. Such a culture emphasizes the interface between practice and academics through the analysis of evidencebased literatures in pursuit of patient care. Such a culture shifts, as much as is feasible, the responsibility for learning to the student.
The Academic Advisory Committee recommends that interdisciplinary research be enhanced via the delineated initiatives:
Medication Therapy Management
(2) forums established for the intellectual exchange of ideas (3) new and strengthened relationships with other schools on campus (nursing, health sciences, psychology, etc.)
The Academic Advisory Committee recommends the following structure for the promotion of Medication Therapy Management within the program: A team composed of PYI, PYII and PYIII students under the supervision of a practitioner will follow an assigned family group over the course of their career at Duquesne. Each team will be referred to as the “Smith Family Medication Therapy Management Consultants. The goal of the team will be to provide ongoing medication therapy management.
(4) mentoring of new faculty with a focus on interdisciplinary research
Cultural Competence/Diversity
The Academic Advisory Committee recommends that the continuous professional development (CPD) includes the development and implementation of goals and objectives to meet School needs and ACPE Accreditation Standards. CPD would enhance faculty, alumni, preceptor, and student pharmacists’ professional skills and knowledge to positively improve pharmacist impact on patient health and curriculum outcomes.
The Academic Advisory Committee recommends that the Medication Therapy Management Family Teams be utilized as vehicles for student assimilation of the issues and responsibilities of a culturally competent practitioner. As the families in this program will come from diverse backgrounds, this initiative provides hands-on experience in this area.
5
(1) recruitment of new faculty in both the basic sciences and administrative and social sciences focuses on individuals capable of engaging in interdisciplinary research
Mylan School of Pharmacy
(5) increased availability of seed monies for research (6) new and strengthened relationships with community partners in the Western PA region (7) focus on interdisciplinary research in teaching pedagogy. Continuous Professional Development

Activities The diabetes self management model using the pharmacist-coach is an exceptional learning opportunity for our P-IV students on experiential education rotations. All of the 18 students assigned to Dr. Berdine plus others assigned to our group practice faculty are involved in the care of these diabetes clients. Teaching diabetes self management and care

of the patient with diabetes aligns with the Mylan School of Pharmacy strategic plan by incorporating active learning strategies into the curriculum. With diabetes at near epidemic proportions in our society, this is an important disease to understand from a clinical and patient perspective. As students near provider status, certificate programs will become more important than ever in credentialing providers. Over the past year Dr. Berdine has been involved in the following efforts to promote the success of the pharmacist-coach model in partnership with the APhA Foundation, Giant Eagle and PBGH: Collaboration with Dr. Deborah Krasnow from Giant Eagle to determine the value of one “unit” of pharmaceutical care. Pharmacist job satisfaction is being surveyed in the IRBapproved project as well. n Dr. Berdine presented one two-hour live session to the LivingMyLife network pharmacists on patient case management illustrating the care of difficult patients in the self management program. n Dr. Berdine is serving the second year of a two-year term to the Pennsylvania Diabetes Action Program, Pennsylvania State Department of Health Executive Leadership Team (PDAP ELT). Meetings are four times a year. She is the sole pharmacist representative. n Dr. Berdine continues as a member of the Pennsylvania Statewide Diabetes Planning Committee, October 2005 to the present. The mission of the group is to organize efforts to develop a statewide diabetes blueprint by identifying the burden of diabetes in Pennsylvania and the barriers to prevention and care; link potential partners; identify health disparities; to operationalize a sustainable statewide diabetes plan for Pennsylvania. Meetings are four times a year. n Dr. Berdine was invited to present the final summary educational session about diabetes self management at the Advanced Practice Institute on Diabetes Care in Baltimore, Maryland, November 2008, sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation. n Dr. Berdine was selected as national moderator for the APhA e-community on diabetes care in February 2009. n
n
Dr. Berdine was selected for the Amylin National Rethink Tank Steering Committee and as a pharmacist advisor to Eli Lilly and Company March 2009.
Immunization Initiative and Related Projects Project Manager: Hilde Berdine, Pharm.D., BCPS Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy sponsored several American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Immunization Certificate Programs for pharmacist and student pharmacists. More than 15,000 influenza vaccinations were administered as a result of these training programs. Giant Eagle and MedFast provided grant support. The Center provided influenza immunizations for faculty, students, Duquesne University employees and in various Pittsburgh-area communities during visits with the Spirit of Health van. Activities Vaccination delivery by pharmacists to the public is an essential skill adopted by both our student pharmacists and pharmacists in our community. This was an important landmark year in which the faculty voted to require this skill for graduation from our school of pharmacy. Completion of the certificate program is a requirement in the state of Pennsylvania to apply for “authorization to immunize.” Interest in the certificate program was strong again this year. Our collaborative agreement with Dr. Essig was expanded to include a variety of vaccines beyond the influenza vaccine. The number of vaccines given in the primary care physician’s office greatly increased over last year, as well as the number of influenza vaccinations given to employees at the Center for Pharmacy Care. Teaching immunization theory and practice aligns with our school’s strategic plan by incorporating active learning strategies into the curriculum. The ability to immunize an individual is an important skill for a contemporary pharmacist to acquire as he/she is able to improve the public health of his/her own neighborhoods and communities.
Pharmacist Medication Management and Adherence Clinic based in a Physician’s Office Project Manager: Hilde Berdine Pharm.D., BCPS The Center maintains an ambulatory care site within a physician’s office to facilitate faculty scholarship and student experiences. A poster describing the demographics of the practice, service delivery, and future directions for the practice was presented at the ACCP meeting. Activities The referral center continues into its second year. As of May 15, 2009, another 64 patients have been referred to the clinic. A total of 141 patients have been referred over the almost two-year existence of the service. n The number of unique patient encounters totaled approximately 250 patient visits. n The PGY-1 resident participated in clinic activities and assisted the independent study students in their work. n

Aca d emic Pr ogram s Fellowship and Residency Programs Director: Dr. Thomas J. Mattei, Associate Dean The Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy has continually developed and enhanced its fellowship and residency programs over the years. The programs now attract post-graduate students outside of the Duquesne family and have produced several new Duquesne University faculty members who oversee and operate diverse clinical practice sites. With added structure and creativity, the programs have developed into distinctive fellowship and residency opportunities that parallel AACP standards used to accredit other residency programs. The fellowship is structured to allow for maximal teaching and precepting opportunities, while ensuring that clinical skills continue to be developed and refined. Courses in teaching and research prepare graduate fellows to master the classroom and lead innovative research projects for publication. The development of new practice sites managed by clinical faculty members offers ambulatory care residents countless opportunities to gain additional patient care skills through structured rotations with faculty mentors. The fellowship program began as a one-year post-graduate training program designed to further develop, enhance, and strengthen research and teaching skills to prepare graduates for a career in academia. The program graduated Dr. Nicole Marcotullio, Dr. Monica Skomo, and Dr. Randy Tomko. Each was hired by the Duquesne University Mylan School of Pharmacy as pharmacy practice faculty members and has developed clinical practices that serve as rotation sites for current fellows, residents, and student pharmacists. Currently, there are eight faculty practice sites that serve as clinical rotation sites for fellows and residents. Each site is operated by a School of Pharmacy faculty member in cooperation with site staff. The sites serve as a means for fellows and residents to not only refine their clinical skills, but also gain precepting

Kristofik is, and has been, a friend, professor, mentor, and professional colleague to innumerable Duquesne University Pharmacy alumni, from the first graduates of the School to members of the 2009 graduating class. After earning pharmacy (1966) and law (1972) degrees at his alma mater, Mr. Kristofik was appointed to the School of Pharmacy faculty in 1976. Dean Bruce Martin assigned Professor Kristofik to teach pharmacy law, develop the experiential education component of the then-
B.S. curriculum, and serve as the School liaison with the Pharmacy Alumni Association. That Mr. Kristofik, with the assistance of a dedicated group of Pharmacy alumni leaders, advanced the legacy of the Association and attained a new level of success is evident. From the start, he cultivated essential Pharmacy alumni support and services as preceptors and adjunct instructors in the experiential education and other courses of the academic program. Under his guiding influence and skillful management, the Association board has sponsored numerous events — Nights with the Dukes, Heinz Hall and Benedum concert and theatre performances, and Pittsburgh Pirates games. The Annual Alumni Conference at Seven Springs, in its 25th year, is the Executive Director’s creation. The School of Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Alumni Association dedicate this silver anniversary conference to Mr. Kristofik — pharmacist, lawyer, professor, Executive Director, and Distinguished Alumnus among his extended Pharmacy alumni family.
Annual Alumni Conference
The 25th Annual Alumni Conference was held on May 1-3, 2009, at Seven Springs and was attended by approximately 200 guests. Five Continuing Education Programs for Pharmacists were held: Diabetes Self-Management Education in an ADA Approved Retail Setting, Update in Vaccines and Immunization Practice, Teenage Misuse of Prescription Medication, Impairment with Pharmacists and Student Pharmacists.
