TMB host Ireland’s first ever Malaria Museum Dublin’s very own Malaria Museum has opened on the top floor of Tropical Medical Bureau’s Grafton Street headquarters, to coincide with World Malaria Day.

Please see below a list of upcoming talks:

The museum will act as an independent forum making Ireland part of a global conversation about malaria.

Gus Bell is an Associate Professor of Microbiology at Trinity College Dublin and has worked for almost 25 years in malaria research.

The pop-up Malaria Museum is a not-for profit organization, which aims to highlight the vital work of organisations who continue to advocate and educate the public on the dangers of malaria. Admission is free and it is open to the general public midweek. Please see the museum’s Facebook page for opening times https://www.facebook.com/malariamuseum.

Antimalarial therapy: an arms race between humans and parasites with Dr Gus Bell

When: Monday 12th May 2014 at 6:30pm. Malaria: Treatment and Prevention with Dr Graham Fry Dr Graham Fry is the Medical Director of the Tropical Medical Bureau which he established in 1988. It now has 22 clinics around Ireland.

The Malaria Museum combines scientific information with a unique, offbeat visual style, to educate and entertain visitors in the life cycle of the parasite, the history and medications used to combat it, and the exciting future, with groundbreaking innovations promising a malaria vaccine that could save hundreds of thousands of lives in the very near future.

When: Thursday 22nd May at 6:30pm.

The museum will also host a lecture series of public talks, over a five week period. This series will include speakers from Trinity College Dublin, Professors of Parasitology and Microbiology.

When: Thursday 29th May at 6:30pm.

Admission is free and all lectures are open to the general public.

Malaria and Worms with Dr Celia Holland Celia Holland is a Professor of Parasitology at Trinity College Dublin and has worked for almost twenty years in malaria research.

Dr Graham Fry, Medical Director of the Tropical Medical Bureau said, “It is very important to raise awareness of the dangers of Malaria. In 2013 there was an estimated 200 million cases with at least 600,000 deaths. It is a very serious problem. At this moment in time there is no vaccine available because it is a very difficult disease to create a vaccine for as the parasite stays within the cells and is very hard to get an antibody at it.” Malaria Museum Director Vanessa Breen will be giving guided tours of the museum and explaining each aspect of the display in detail. The exhibition can be found on the top floor of the Tropical Medical Bureau at 54 Grafton Street, Dublin 2.

For more information on the museum visit www.malariamuseum.com.

HEALTH

It is very easy to fall into bad eating and sleeping habits when you’re busy fulfilling college work, doing exams and doing part time work. However, it is very simple – if you become unwell as a result of not looking after yourself, and are unable to keep it defeat all your efforts to get there in the first place. It is very important that you look after yourself and keep yourself healthy. • Ensuring you get 8-9 hours’ sleep per night (trying to make up for it at the weekends does not work) • Manage your time well. Ensure a balance between your college work and personal time to unwind and recharge the batteries. • Ensure you get exercise. If you are engaged in regular sports or don’t like going to the gym, then go for a 30 minute brisk walk each day. This will help burn off stress, lift your mood, aid your concentration and limber you up (particularly if you are slumped over a desk for most of the day) • Ensure you eat properly (regularly and eating nutritional food – never skip breakfast)

Healthy eating is easier said than done, especially when you’re under major time constraints. However, there are many resources out there that provide, cheap, healthy and quick recipes you can make at home and pop in your bag, to stop you reaching for that chocolate bar.

Here is a list of good recipes sites www.goodfoodireland.com www.odlums.ie www.totalrecipesearch.com www.studentrecipes.com www.recipesireland.com www.grouprecipes.com www.cheapeats.ie www.knorr.ie You’ll find yourself swapping and sharing recipes like you never would have believed! One other good tip is to get a Wok; you can cook an entire meal in a wok in a matter of minutes! Taken from Youth Work Ireland, Roscommon/N.E. Galway.

MENTALHealth Just as you look after your physical body, you also need to take care of your mind. Mental is not just the absence of illness, but also about keeping yourself in peak mental condition. Having good mental health will help you meet the academic demands of college and assist you during exam periods. Sometimes some students become stressed, particularly at exam times or when assignments are due by strict deadlines. Firstly it is important to point out that stress is not all bad. Certain amounts of stress are in fact beneficial and can assist in motivation and performance. However, too much stress can result in a drop of performance and can cause inability to concentrate and illness. This is where the demands placed on us (often by ourselves) are greater than our ability to cope and results in distress. If you are ever feeling stressed, anxious, depressed or troubled by any mental or emotional difficulty – get help. Don’t delay and don’t be afraid. There is a lot of help available confidentially. There are many people you can talk to. Speak to the doctor or nurse at your college, see your family G.P. or the one in the college locality. You can also speak to the college counsellor or chaplain. Don’t hesitate or be embarrassed. You will not be the first or last student to avail of such help and the professionals referred to will be very happy to assist you. Taken from Youth Work Ireland, Roscommon/N.E. Galway.

The following will help you cope and overcome stress:

• Planning and preparing your work well • Timetabling and managing your time well • Getting proper rest and sleep • Doing aerobic exercise • Taking care with your diet • Taking time to unwind and relax • Keeping matters in a proper perspective • Getting help when needed
