MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “New MS Center in St. Cloud area now a reality. Last spring, we told you about plans to launch a new multiple sclerosis center and day program near St. Cloud, Minn. We are pleased to tell you it is now a reality! Steve Korngable, Following extensive research, including Director of Programs written client surveys, focus groups and a search for a collaborative partner, the MS Center at Opportunity Manor, Inc. was launched Nov. 16, in Sartell, Minn. The new MS Center provides a place for people living with MS to meet, socialize and grow by offering regular social activities, educational programs and exercise opportunities. More than 25 people attended the open house Nov. 4, where they took tours of the center, met Opportunity Manor and Minnesota Chapter staff, mingled with other potential members and shared their ideas for future programs and services. In addition to the Fairview MS Achievement Center in St. Paul, this program is the second program dedicated to people with MS in Minnesota and fifth of its kind in the nation. We continue to explore the possibility of a similar program in Duluth with the Benedictine Health Center that could be launched as early as 2011. We will keep you posted on any developments. For more information about the MS Center at Opportunity Manor, please contact Rhonda Sergeant at 320-240-1900.

Promising treatments for MS
Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at nationalMSsociety.org or 800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Relax at Majestic Shores Resort Take a vacation from the challenges of multiple sclerosis, connect with others and enjoy daily activities on the beautiful shore of Cedar Lake near Maple Lake, Minn. Many still refer to Majestic Shores Resort as MS Camp, but the name changed with good reason! Located on the shore of Cedar Lake near the community of Maple Lake, the scenic landscape is almost too beautiful Bob Overturf to describe. But the real sight was that all those scooters, crutches, canes, walkers and braces were greatly outnumbered by very large, very bright smiles. My first visit to Majestic Shores Resort was last August. I was a bit apprehensive about the challenges the facilities might present, but upon leaving, I wondered, “Why did I wait so long to go?” There are accessible rest rooms spread throughout; every cabin has multiple showers with roll-in shower chairs as well as standard ones; all the buildings are accessible; the paths and trails are easily maneuverable for wheelchairs or scooters; and even the pontoon boats are accommodating. The resort experience takes place from mid-Sunday through mid-Thursday. I was concerned I might get bored, so in preparation, I took two books to take up part of the time. I never cracked a cover!

When you sign up for Majestic Shores Resort, you receive a list of activities for each day. I had a tough time choosing, as they all were of interest to me. One of the most enjoyable activities was the “naturalist adventure.” Led by a naturalist who is very informative and enjoyable to listen to, the trip takes you to a rookery where many aquatic birds are nesting, including different species of herons, loons and cormorants. When you are out and about, keep a sharp eye out for eagles, as many nest around the lake. Not all your time is structured. I often enjoyed going to the coffee shop, where most evenings there are at least two movies showing. Before breakfast each morning, I would rise early for stretching and wake-up exercises. Lastly, you will never be without assistance. There are many volunteers, some who have been helping for up to 30 years. They are as much a part of the experience as the other guests.

n Eating
well. Did you know extra weight adds to fatigue? Visit nationalMSsociety.org and search “nutrition” to find recipes and information on nutrients important to people with MS and meal planning.
Additional information Contact the Minnesota Chapter at 612-335-7900 or 800-582-5296 for information about local wellness-focused programs, classes, groups and more for people living with MS.
n Emotional
and spiritual health. The grief and sense of loss that can accompany a diagnosis are powerful factors. Paying attention to one’s inner self can help people recognize what drains them emotionally and how they can minimize stress.

In a complex world, it helps to have a guide. Financial planning can be intimidating, but you don’t have to do it alone. The Minnesota Chapter, in collaboration with the Financial Education Partners Program, offers free personal financial counseling to help people with MS navigate the complex world of money.
Let an expert be your guide. During free, one-hour phone sessions, experts address topics that matter to you — from basic budgeting to retirement planning. To learn more, contact Steve at 612-335-7974 or skornkable@MSsociety.org.
Leave your legacy Make a gift that leaves a legacy without paying any money now. Naming the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter as a beneficiary in your life insurance or retirement plan is an easy way to make your mark against MS.
