MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “Research shows volunteering can improve your health.”

Timothy Holtz, Director of Programs

People who volunteer provide a simple yet powerful gift: their time. It sounds simple but volunteering not only makes a huge impact in the lives of people with MS but can be an equally meaningful experience for you, too.

A study by the Corporation for National and Community Service found a significant connection between volunteering and good health. The report shows people who volunteer have greater longevity, higher functional ability, lower rates of depression and less incidence of heart disease. This is an exciting study but it comes as no surprise. Volunteers often tell Minnesota Chapter staff that personal gratification far outweighs the time and effort they put into volunteering. Many volunteers also comment on the close friendships and connections they have made through the experience. The valuable skills and fresh perspectives of volunteers are vital to the National MS Society and make a powerful difference to people affected by the disease. But if that’s not reason enough, now you have one more — you can improve your own life, too.

Changes in the works To cut costs we’re making some changes to the Programs Connection, starting with the June-July issue. Don’t worry — you’ll still get the same great information about upcoming programs, just in a more economical way!

Get active this spring season and volunteer your time. Volunteer at a chapter event or form a team, help plan and implement programs to support people affected by MS, join the MS Fitness Team and so much more. Visit www.MSsociety.org and click on volunteer to learn more.

Sponsorship of society programs or events does not connote that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Walking today for a future free of MS “It is fun to be with friends and we know we are helping a good cause.”

– Meghan Janssen

Meghan Janssen, co-chair of the Minnesota Chapter’s Teen Council and sophomore at Kennedy High School in Bloomington, Minn., Meghan Janssen is carrying on an important tradition at her school. She’s recruiting her peers to participate in Walk MS: Christopher & Banks Walk 2009 presented by Anchor Bank on May 3 as part of Team of the Future.

Meghan works hard to make it easy for teens to participate — she registers each participant and coordinates a school bus to transport her classmates to the walk. According to Meghan, the support from Kennedy High School principal and teachers is a big help. “They’ve seen the great turnout from the students and how many people want to help change this disease.”

Meghan’s older sister, Michaela, and her friend Lexi — Kennedy High graduates and former Teen Council members — started the tradition. After Michaela and Lexi graduated, Meghan picked up the reigns and has brought approximately 100 teens to Walk MS each year since. “My classmates and I enjoy walking because it is fun to be with friends and we know we are helping a good cause,” Meghan said. “The T-shirts and food along the way are also big incentives.”

4

Multiple sclerosis touches Meghan’s family personally — her mother and other family members have the disease. Both Meghan and her sister Michaela are extremely involved with the Minnesota Chapter’s teen and young adult programs.

Walk MS Join the movement. Team Victory at Walk MS 2008. Chris Anderson, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2004, formed Team Victory for Walk MS Twin Cities in 2005. Since then, family and friends have rallied together to walk with Chris and raise funds to help end the disease. “The support I have around me continues,” Chris said. “This is my fifth year participating in Walk MS. The fight continues — victory is inevitable.”

Each year, thousands of people come together to move closer to a world free of multiple sclerosis by participating in Walk MS: Christopher & Banks Walk 2009 presented by Anchor Bank — a one-day walk held May 3 in 17 communities throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Funds raised through Walk MS help support MS research and programs and services for people living with the disease. This year the Minnesota Chapter anticipates nearly 10,000 people will participate in Walk MS events and raise more than $2.2 million.

Ways to get involved Walk Get involved by registering for a Walk MS event near you. While you’re at it, rally your friends and family together and form a team. Trouble with mobility? Walk MS routes are fully supported and accessible to wheelchairs. Or, consider choosing a shorter route option.

Volunteer Consider joining Walk MS as a volunteer. Whether you walk or volunteer, the Walk MS experience is all about coming together as a community to celebrate our progress and show our commitment to moving even closer to a world free of MS. Spread the word If walking and volunteering aren’t right for you, help us grow Walk MS bigger than ever by talking about the event to people in your community. Encourage friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and more to sign up for Walk MS.

It’s just a longer game.” May 14 n Duluth and Eveleth May 15 n Bemidji Join professional hockey player Jordan Sigalet and learn how to shut out multiple sclerosis. Jordan will share his story of living with MS and how he makes his unique mark against the disease. Jordan has faced some serious opponents in his lifetime — both on and off the ice. In 2004, during a record-breaking season at Bowling Green State University, Jordan woke up one morning with a numb foot. Within 24 hours, he was completely numb from his neck down. After two worry-filled weeks of medical tests, Jordan was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS. At first, he only told his coach, close friends and family, but with his family’s support, Jordan took control of living with MS. He vowed he would not quit his beloved sport. He began drug therapy and finished the season with more than 80 saves. He exercised, followed a strict diet and made sure to always get a good night’s sleep. Today, Jordan views his

Do you want to talk to someone who is also affected by MS? Let the Minnesota Chapter help you connect with someone who understands MS.

Meet face to face or visit over the phone — the choice is yours. Are you interested in being paired with someone going through similar experiences? Whether you have MS or have a loved one with MS, we can help. Thanks to my self-help group I found a support network and understand what to expect living with MS. My bequest to the National MS Society is like a gift to my extended family. Contact the society and ask how you can help others with MS through you will or trust.
