Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

Surviving the economy, today and tomorrow “Multiple sclerosis is the big unknown. You can’t count on how your MS will be, but you can count on the Minnesota Chapter. Anytime you need it, seek assistance.” – Heather Clark, diagnosed in 1988 The Minnesota Chapter provides a number of programs and services to help people affected by MS navigate the complex world of money and get by during difficult times including free financial planning consultations, Independent Living Grants and Emergency Assistance. In light of this economic crisis, financial advice and guidance is in high demand, which is why the Minnesota Chapter is providing the Surviving the Economy program (See Page 9). Heather and Tim Clark with daughter, Emily After Heather Clark was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1988, she immediately sought information, support and assistance from the National MS Society. Heather said that learning as much as she can about the world is part of who she is, which included her new diagnosis. Since then Heather and her husband, Tim, have taken advantage of society educational programs covering a range of topics — including financial planning, which in today’s tough economy, is more important than ever.

4

This program is designed to help families living with MS address important financial issues affecting their day-to-day lives and develop a financial plan to not only survive today’s economy, but prepare for a more secure future as well. Heather and Tim believe it is important for everyone to plan their financial future, especially those living with a chronic illness. “Multiple sclerosis is the big unknown,” Heather said. “You can’t count on how your MS will be, but you can count on the Minnesota Chapter. Anytime you need it, seek assistance.” To learn about other financial resources, visit www.MSsociety.org.

Young adults living with MS Join the movement.

“After my diagnosis, when so much was changing for me, the MS Society provided support and helped me connect with others going through similar experiences. I try to be a positive “face of MS” and keep informed with the latest in research so I can help others understand MS and ways we can all help end this disease.” – Katie Netzel, diagnosed in 2005

People diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in their 20s and 30s have unique challenges. You are young and starting to figure out where your career is headed. You might be dating, recently engaged or even married. All of a sudden, you are hit with an MS diagnosis. The Minnesota Chapter recently formed a young adult advisory group to identify opportunities to serve young adults who live with MS or who have a loved one with the disease. Soon, you will see new opportunities for young adults to join the movement, connect with others and learn ways to cope with MS. In the meantime, check out the table of contents in the Programs Connection under young adults to find information about programs and services just for you.

New ongoing water exercise program in Marshall The Marshall Area YMCA now offers an ongoing MS water exercise class. The Minnesota Chapter would like to thank Diane Johnson and Ruth Gernentz for instructing the seasonal MS water exercise class for the past 11 years and Doug Goodmund, from Marshall Parks and Recreation, for coordinating the program.

If not you, then who? We need you now, more than ever.

Walk with us May 3, 2009. If not you, then who?

n

MS research is moving at record speed, but for the first time in more than 50 years, we can’t keep up. That’s why events like Walk MS are so critical — to fund research for a cure.

n

Just think, if people with MS don’t drive the movement forward, who will?

n

This year, we call on everyone — especially people with MS — to join the movement.

n

We need your drive. We need your passion. We need you now.

Register today for Walk MS: Christopher & Banks Walk presented by Anchor Bank.

We’ve always been in favor of hard work. Our National MS Society Charitable Gift Annuity is one hard worker! It provides us with tax benefits and a fixed income steam for life.
