MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “Helping people with MS find accessible, appropriate housing is one of our priorities.” Helping people with multiple sclerosis find accessible, appropriate housing is one of the Minnesota Chapter’s priorities. We want to make sure that people affected by the disease Steve Korngable have access to housing that meets their physical Long-term Services needs as well as their financial situation. We Manager do this by collaborating with other groups and organizations and exploring new ways to meet your housing needs. Kingsley Commons, which opened last June, features 25 accessible and affordable apartments for people with MS. This residence is nearly full. The chapter is exploring three more housing developments with CommonBond Communities that feature accessible units for people with mixed incomes. The chapter is collaborating with developers who provide accessible and affordable condominiums along the Hiawatha Light Rail Line and near the Midtown Global Market. Chapter staff are also available to help you find an accessible home that meets your personal needs. Consider taking advantage of Independent Living Grants, which can provide financial assistance for home modifications and adaptive equipment needs.

New accessible apartments to open this fall Another exciting development, Charlotte Commons will open this September near the University of Minnesota. These apartments will offer three accessible and affordable units for families. This project is provided through a collaboration with Project for Pride in Living and ResCap. Apartments will feature roll-in showers, grab bars, open space under sinks and kitchen cabinets with rollout shelves. Potential residents must income qualify. To be added to the interest list, contact Steve Korngable at 612-335-7974. Sponsorship of society programs or events does not connote that the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalmssociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

Join me for the Women Against MS luncheon “This is a disease that affects every individual differently and we want to work to end it.” – Barb Thornton, diagnosed 1998 Ten years ago, after experiencing double vision at her son’s hockey practice, Barb Thornton was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her doctor recommended she get in touch with the National MS Society, which led her to attend a newly diagnosed program. Barb said that although the program was very informative, she remained in denial about her MS for some time. She continued to gather as much information about MS as she could, but just was not ready to become active with the Minnesota Chapter. All that changed in 2005 when Barb attended the Women Against MS luncheon. She enjoyed the luncheon so much she wanted to volunteer for the event but didn’t feel she had enough spare time to make a commitment. When Barb retired from teaching last year, she had time to give and knew exactly how she wanted to spend it. Barb is now a dedicated member of the Women Against MS committee.

“I’ve met so many people, volunteers and staff, who are so committed to the mission and the work of the MS society,” Barb said. “I love being able to use my gifts to support the luncheon projects. From finding items and creating baskets for the silent auction, to hosting a table, I have been able to give back.” Barb encourages everyone to attend the 2008 luncheon. “It is a great opportunity to support the work of the Minnesota Chapter while enjoying a great lunch and an inspiring speaker, without making a huge time commitment,” she said. “Whether you live with MS, know someone who is touched by the disease or want to be educated about MS, you can support people affected by MS and help end this disease for our children and all future generations.”
