MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “Just remember, we are here to help!” Taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health. But health insurance plans don’t always provide Sarah Danen, Director coverage for counseling services, which can be very expensive. That’s why the National of Client Services MS Society, Minnesota Chapter is offering a brand new program that provides financial assistance to help people with MS pay for counseling services. The Counseling Assistance Program provides limited financial assistance — up to $750 per person, per year — for fees and/or co-payments for counseling with a licensed professional. If you are interested in this program and aren’t already seeing a professional counselor, just call the Minnesota Chapter for a referral list of counselors and therapists in your area. In addition to this new program, the chapter offers an array of financial assistance grants to help people living with MS and their families move forward in spite of the disease, including the Aids for Daily Living Grant; Adaptive Equipment/Home and Vehicle Modification Grant; Chore Services Grant; Care Partner Relief Grant; and Emergency Assistance. People affected by MS also can take advantage of free telephone consultations with experts in employment How to apply discrimination and financial and estate To apply for the Counseling planning. Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

One week, lifelong friendships “To this day, MS Youth Camp is still the best part of my summer.” – Michaela Janssen This August will be my fifth year attending MS Youth Camp. I first attended camp my junior year in high school after Lexi Moser — who I did not know well at the time but is now one of my closest friends — asked Michaela Janssen me why I was wearing a Walk MS T-shirt. That day we learned both of our moms live with MS. She told me I had to go to MS Youth Camp, but I was hesitant because I had never been away from my family for five days, I did not know anyone very well and this MS stuff was new for me. But I went anyway and at the end of the week, I didn’t want to leave. I made new friends whom I still talk to — my only friends who completely understand how MS affects life. In fact, one of those people is my college roommate, Erin Weber. Because of our Youth

4

Camp connection, we started the University of St. Thomas Students Against Multiple Sclerosis Club to spread MS awareness to our peers. Once I turned 18, I couldn’t be a camper anymore so I volunteered as a counselor. I relate to the kids because, just like them, I have a family member with MS. They ask me about what camp was like when I was younger and about my mom and how I deal with MS. I think I learn more from them than they learn from me, and it amazes me what these kids go through every day and how they handle providing care for their family members with MS. My life would be completely different if I did not go to camp and I don’t know what I would have done without that support system. To this day, MS Youth Camp is still the best part of my summer and just like that Learn more first year, I never want to leave. See Page 13 to learn more about Youth Camp.

There’s no off-season for activism. Join the movement.

The legislative session may be coming to an end, but it doesn’t mean your work is done. In fact, summer is the ideal time to build relationships with your legislators and get involved in your community.

MS Society events Are you participating in Walk MS, Bike MS or other events this summer? Do any MS Society events take place in your town? Reach out to participants to educate them about MS issues. Plus, encourage them to sign up for the chapter’s Action Alert list to learn simple ways to make changes for people living with MS.

Thank you, MS activists, for educating legislators and raising awareness! Nearly 140 activists sent e-mails, visited or called their legislators, more than 20 activists wore orange to the chapter’s prescription co-pay hearing during MS Awareness Week and 10 participated in MN-CCD’s Tuesday at the Capitol.

Out and about at community events Spring and summer are perfect for having picnics, attending community festivals and chatting with neighbors. Elected officials are often at these events, too! Introduce yourself and share your story. Remember, your “elevator speech” should be less than two minutes. Also remember that your legislators want to hear from their constituents and understand the issues that affect the communities they represent.

Step up and become a leader This summer the chapter will call upon activist leaders in Senate districts statewide. Do you want to be a liaison between your district and the MS Society? Do you enjoy staying on top of the issues that affect your community? Would you like to train and mobilize other activists in your area? If so, we want to hear from you!

GET INVOLVED Ready to continue your activism throughout the summer? To get involved, contact Jenna at 612-335-7981.

Challenge Walk MS: Twin Cities Crew for a cure.

“The event is small enough to be personal and intimate, yet big enough to be exciting and feel like you are a part of something great.” Jenny Grise with son, Brayden, and husband, Travis, at the Challenge Walk MS finish line in 2009.

Jenny Grise met her husband, Travis — the love of her life — one year after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Through the years, the couple has not only faced the challenges of the disease together, they’ve also fought back together. In 2002, Jenny and Travis began participating in Challenge Walk MS: Twin Cities, a three-day, 50-mile walk to raise funds to help end MS. According to Jenny, when Travis’ MS began progressing, they had a difficult time facing their friends and family. “Challenge Walk gave us an opportunity to say, ‘Yeah, this is a bummer, but we are raising money, and you can help,” Jenny said. But after the couple’s son, Brayden, was born, Jenny no longer had time to train for the 50-mile walk. Instead, she began volunteering as part of the Challenge Walk MS Crew — a group of volunteers that helps ensure the event runs smoothly from start to finish.

“Our job is to set up, provide snacks and water, tear down and clean up, but it’s the extra things that make it fun,” she said. “We meet about a week before the walk to discuss the theme of the weekend. From there, we plan decorations, costumes, music, games and more to make our rest stop fun for the walkers.” For Jenny and Travis, Challenge Walk MS has become a meaningful yearly tradition. Volunteer with Crew Challenge Walk MS 2010 will be held Sept. 24 to 26. To learn about joining Crew or becoming a walker, visit MSsociety.org. Or call Will Ziegenhagen at 612-335-7992 or wziegenhagen@MSsociety.org.

A little common ground makes all the difference. An MS diagnosis in your 20s and 30s can be overwhelming, and even scary, especially with careers, relationships, families and other life changes in full swing. But sometimes, talking with others who understand firsthand can make a world of difference.

Connect with other 20s and 30s. The Minnesota Chapter offers unique opportunities for people affected by MS in their 20s and 30s, like the social outing on Page 22, and much more. To learn more, visit MSsociety.org or contact Jeff Fisher at 612-335-7951 or jfisher@MSsociety.org.

Make your mark on t he future

You can make your mark on the future of the MS movement through a bequest to the National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter. It’s a simple, flexible way to make a meaningful gift — ensuring research continues moving forward and families touched by MS receive the support they need.
