Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Just the guys “Talking about MS with a bunch of guys who experience the disease on a daily basis takes on a different meaning.” – Mick Auger, Men’s Getaway participant

Mick Auger

Mick Auger attended his first Men’s Getaway about 10 years ago. He remembers thinking the getaway, which was held in northern Minnesota that year, was a great chance to take a break from his day-today routine and spend some time with “the guys.”

He was right. At the getaway, Mick developed new friendships and experienced a strong sense of camaraderie with the other men in attendance. The weekend had a certain amount of structure, but Mick’s favorite parts were the informal gatherings and conversations with other attendees. He also enjoyed learning more about the disease in a less formal atmosphere as opposed to a classroom or doctor’s office.

The relationships he has formed with other Men’s Getaway participants have kept Mick coming back year after year, especially since many of the attendees live in different cities and the getaway offers them a time and place to all come together. But Mick and other participants who live close to one another have started getting together informally throughout the year as well. “Where else could you go to find all this information, ‘three hots and a cot’ (three meals and a bed) and plenty of fun and social opportunities at the same time?” Mick asked. “I think we all have had opportunities to hear the clinical story about MS from our professional, medical friends, but talking about MS with a bunch of guys who experience the disease on a daily basis takes on a different meaning.”
