An Urban Plant [nursery] Fall 2010 Old Town Alexandria [ .44 acres ]

The design developed from a studio titled “Settlers and Nomads”. My interpretation of Ideas about dwelling vs. movement formed the program for the plant nursery to be located on the given site. The design, located on an existing parking lot in Old Town, seeks to accommodate the transient movement for both plants and people throughout the different levels of the site. The change of plant inventory throughout the seasons as well as a change in the supply, as plants are bought and sold, are meant to be the nomadic features of the design. Also, different levels of the site are separated by benches to form steps. This highlights the movement of customers walking through the site. The walkways for customers and ramps for workers define the dimensions of the design as each level designates a change in the circulation pattern. The dwelling or settling feature of the design is characterized though the location of permanent trees on the site. The trees were an inherited feature within the context of the studio, and while the layout of the steps and walkways greatly responded to their existence, they also enhance the space by creating a contrast to those plants that are temporary. The permanence of the trees and the structure itself, gives the site meaning throughout the year, even when plants may not be for sale. The commonly found nursery bench is elevated to be a significant aspect of the design and carefully considered to allow for the movement of plants and the sitting or dwelling of people.

King Street [stormwater] Park Spring 2010 Old Town Alexandria [ .34 acres ]

The studio titled “Water Body” focused on a buried stream, Hoof’s run, located in Alexandria, VA. The entire length of Hoof’s run and it’s drainage areas were mapped and analyzed. My design intervention is focused on the location where King Street intersects the channeled creek. The existing condition of this triangular space is a park that only alludes to a connection to the stream below. In my design, the culvert is open to the park and Hoof’s run becomes part of a new stormwater management system as well as a welcoming threshold for visitors to Old Town. Outdated stormwater infrastructure drains much of Old Town into a combined sewer system. During a rain event, stormwater often overwhelms the treatment facility and the overflow of untreated raw sewage flows into local water bodies. This design demonstrates collecting stormwater from the natural high point of King Street in a cistern located on the site to reduce pressure on the combined sewer system. The cistern is designed to hold up to the 15 year storm volume of water under half the site. The collected water is then released from gravity fed fountains over the lower half of the site and filtered through vegetation before finally entering the open culvert and Hoof’s run.

Multi-plex movie theater Fall 2009

The post industrial site located along the Anacostia river was carefully selected for the final project in the studio. The program was also selected to activate the neglected vacant site and capitalize on its dramatic existing post industrial character. Located beside the Washington Navy Yard, the site suers from contamination. Because of this, phytoremediation plants are a key component of the design as well as boardwalks that line the site and give access to the theaters.

Museum of [latent] Inscription Spring 2009 106 acre Daingerfield Island [5 acre museum site]

The program was given for this studio project as well as the site of Daingerfield Island located in Alexandria, VA. A museum of latent inscription was interpreted to become an outdoor museum sited on the southeast corner of the densely woody Island. The siting was chosen due to the history of wetlands that had inscribed the land at that location. The museum bridges the small existing creek as well as cuts into the existing slope expressing inscription through the form of the design. Dry laid stone walls define the exterior of the museum while the interior walls are created with materials in order of the time in which they will biodegrade. The walls become the exhibit and define the space visitors can move through and between.
