What is Cold Processed (without heat) VCO? Cold processed (without heat) virgin coconut oil is colourless, has a mild and fresh coconut aroma, and leaves a smooth aftertaste when swallowed. VCO is a healthy, raw, and a natural saturated fat with a high content of medium chain fatty acids, primarily Lauric acid which is also found in a mother’s milk. Because of its anti-microbial and anti-viral properties, VCO is being referred to as the healthiest oil on the planet and even as a super health food.

How is it Made? Cold processed VCO is extracted from the fresh meat of carefully chosen mature coconuts by the low emulsion and separation technique (least method). This is a natural process that doesn’t involve the application of heat. There is no chemical refining, bleaching, or deodorizing to alter any of the nutrients from their natural state. 5

How does VCO have multiple amazing benefits? When ingested, VCO goes directly to the liver where the medium chain triglycerides are converted to ketogenic energy in the body and brain. It’s the presence of lauric acid, capric acid, and caprylic acid that provides the antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Whilst the 21st-century modern world is still rediscovering these benefits and science has yet to acknowledge many of these wholeheartedly, coconut oil has been used both as a functional food and a therapeutic (carrier) oil in Ayurveda science in the Indian sub-continent for centuries. 6

Topical VS Supplements? Which Acne treatment is better for your skin? Do you feel like you’re beating your head against the wall with your current acne treatment? For many years, topical treatments were the standard protocol for treating acne. One only had to visit the doctor and walk away with a prescription, hoping to clear the blemishes. However, with all the advancements in skin care ingredients today, topical treatments aren’t they only option for achieving clear, blemish free skin. There are more natural treatments for your acne, such as supplements, that effectively achieve the same results. So which treatment is the best to clear your acne? Topical Treatments Topical treatments are the fastest way to deliver active ingredients to your acne. However, they can also be quite harmful to your skin. For many decades the standard for treating acne has been the use of benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide works by removing excess oil from the skin and killing bacteria that causes acne. Sounds great, right? Benzoyl peroxide can be effective but often acts as a band-aid for short-term relief. Oh, did I forget to mention the side effects? Yes, that’s right –benzoyl peroxide can irritate your skin by making it inflamed, itchy, and extremely dry to the point it becomes flaky and starts to peel off. And since benzoyl peroxide strips all the oil from your skin, it not only makes tight and brittle but also causes your skin to age quicker due to the loss of moisture and collagen. Remember that healthy skin should not be too dry or too oily. But there are even more alarming reasons to stop using benzoyl peroxide! It Kills the Good and Bad Bacteria Since Benzoyl peroxide is an ‘’on the go’’ antibacterial ingredient, it rapidly kills bacteria (bacteria is a primary promoter of acne). Now, I know what you’re thinking. Doesn’t killing bacteria sound great? Well, the problem is that benzoyl peroxide can’t tell the difference between good and bad bacteria, so it attacks all bacteria the same way. And since benzoyl eliminates the good bacteria that live on your skin, it can actually cause more harm by leaving you defenceless against infections. Can Cause Sun Sensitivity & Whitening Effects Benzoyl peroxide can cause photosensitivity, which makes your skin particularly sensitive to the sunlight. Without the use of any sunscreen, your skin can become more prone to sunburns. Yikes! Benzoyl peroxide also contains strong bleaching properties, so if it comes in contact with your hair or clothes it can strip the colour causing a ‘’whitening effect’’. Not Effective on Severe Acne If you have more serious acne, using any treatment solutions containing benzoyl peroxide will be ineffectual. Topical care treatments fail to consider that hormones and other internal factors affect acne – and those can’t be fixed with creams. Furthermore, if you have sensitive skin, you could potentially damage your skin long term. There is a more natural and safer treatment that effectively fights acne without the damaging side effects of benzoyl peroxide, though. What is it? Keep reading to find out! Achieve the Same Results Safely and Naturally by Taking Skinb5 Supplements! Taking the right supplements can balance your hormones and decrease your sebum production. But not all supplements are created equal. Many supplements have low-quality ingredients, making you question whether you’re actually getting the right amount of nutrients. So how do you know which supplements to take? In my opinion, SkinB5 Tablets are the most effective treatment available for acne. SkinB5 is supported by proper clinical research on the use of the selected ingredients for the effective treatment of acne. Not to mention it is 100% natural and peroxide-free. SkinB5 tablets are designed to treat acne from within and help prevent it – not just on the face but all over your body. The innovative supplement combines essential nutrients to strengthen your immune system, reduce stress, control your skin oil production, and of course, balance your hormones. SkinB5 focuses on both fronts of treating acne, internally and externally, which helps clean the body from inside out. It also makes the healing process faster. SkinB5’s skincare products are packed with powerful natural ingredients like Green Tea, Jojoba Oil, Aloe Vera, and Vitamin B5. Most importantly, the supplement is non-irritating and designed to soothe and heal your skin. With SkinB5 you can quickly and easily cure acne permanently WITHOUT expensive, harmful creams and without the side effects – guaranteed! So next time you feel like beating your head against the wall over your current acne treatment, try out SkinB5’s acne treatment. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Have you tried a course of topical treatments before? What were your experiences like? I’d love you hear from you! 4

Whole back area: With one hand holding the Hylod by the handle and guided by the other hand which is holding the gritty stone, work/scrub the whole back area, down to the hips and buttocks.

Front of the body down to the feet: Concentrate on the front of the body using both hands, as before, and continue working on the skin and both sides of the torso.

Backside of the body: Hold the Hylod by the handle, working (scrubbing) the skin up and down and side to side (whichever pleases you).

Heal it with The 21st of July, 2016 marked the world’s second International Yoga Day. Proving just how far and wide yoga has spread, yoga practitioners demonstrated their

YOGA

It seems, though, there is more and more need for clear direction as we navigate in a complex and challenging world. So just how can yoga help? We are familiar with the stress reducing and body strengthening aspects of the postures as we stretch and tone the body, less so with more subtle influences on the body systems. Yoga postures are so cleverly designed and sequenced that they affect all the main systems of the human body, and when linked with the breath, focus and direct the mind. This is when our experience of yoga can have a profound and transformative impression. Understated in a general approach to yoga is the effect the breath can have. Our breath can have a deeply altering impact on the mind and comprehension. If you consider the breath as an indicator of how you are feeling, you can see patterns of breath relating to anxiety and even depression. For example, when we are highly stressed the breath is fast and shallow; when stress overwhelms and makes us dull and lethargic, the breath is held at intervals or sighed out. Usually, the breath rules us. We are breathing but are often unaware of the rhythms of our breath. In yoga practice, the breath is directed for some time and controlled, reversing the tendency for the breath to rule and offering an opportunity for relief from overbearing patterns of thought.

affection for yoga across every continent. From the freezing temperatures of Antarctica to the tropics of Asia mind beyond, people of all nationalities and ideologies displayed yoga poses for all to see. More and more people are realising yoga is a truly beneficial pursuit. Just how beneficial, the ancients knew many years ago. Most yoga teachers in the west have a connection to a lineage of yoga teachers in the east and draw their metaphysical knowledge and mastery of the asanas from a wealth of intelligent eastern insight compiled by those who came before them. This education in the art and science of yoga, while well-known to teachers themselves, is not frequently communicated to yoga newcomers. Perhaps because there is such a wealth of knowledge, perhaps because traditionally pupils were introduced to different aspects of yoga according to their thirst for guidance, or perhaps for reasons that are beyond the scope of this article.

16

Melbourne Style Watch Winter 2016

Breath is understood to be the link between body, mind, and spirit. This may seem too mystical and irrational for some to digest, but that is why yoga has to be an experiential practice. Only then can we understand the truth in yoga. We do know, however, that while we are all individual and unique, on another level we are all the same. We are all human beings experiencing the world in all its intricacy. We all want a fulfilling and rewarding life. Yoga has the tools to deliver health on all levels: health of the body, freedom from disturbing habitual patterns of thought, and robust health of the mind. In a time where stress and misinterpretation inform our behaviour and our relationships, yoga can help us manage our mind and emotions, making a regular yoga practice more than just a way to physically enhance ourselves. Isn’t it time we looked deeply at our relationship with the world and those around us? With the guidance of yoga philosophy, yoga practice can be an instrument for change and joyful expression.

The global response to International Yoga Day was just that – an expression of sheer joy and enthusiasm. Once considered as an alternative to conventional thought, ancient yoga practices have been accepted as a means to promote not only personal harmony but also worldwide unity. Yogic wisdom has made this possible. Marilyn Moon, Art of Living Teacher

A beauty chat with

Melbourne Style Watch Winter 2016

Choy Symes Founder of The Face Australia Promotions and Management and National Director of Little Miss Universe Australia, Mutya ng Australia, Prince & Princess Australia, Miss Plus Size, Mr United Continents Australia, Mister & Miss Asiaworld Australia, Top Model of the World Philippines, Miss Asia Pacific International Australia, Mrs/Miss/Teen Australia Heritage International. “Where Beauty Begins and Dreams Come True” By Shasha AJ Philippine-born Choy Symes has worked her way through the beauty pageant industry to become the National Director of many reputed beauty pageants in Australia. Now she’s getting ready for the launch of the much awaited national pageant, Top Model of the World Philippines 2016 in Melbourne. This is the first of such renowned national Philippine events to be launched entirely outside Philippine, as most pageant and model searches are done in Metro Manila. This is her beautiful story of making beauty queens in Australia. •Let’s start our conversation with Choy’s fondest memory of the Mutya ng Australia events. From all the various beauty pageants I have organised so far, Mutya ng Australia is my most favourite pageant as I have successfully produced winners in the top 5 for two consecutive years. First, I was given a chance to submit a beauty pageant proposal to obtain the right to run the Mutya pageant here in Australia. Then I was

given two years’ probationary rights before I received the partnership. That’s how it all began. •What is the mission of The Face Australia Promotions and Management and what are you trying to bring into the world/beauty pageant industry through this? This is not just another beauty pageant organizer; our mission is to introduce diverse culture through beauty pageants with the assistance of creative and innovative thinkers. It is principally run by me, with the assistance of Hector Calara and a few friends. We opened a platform to motivate all relevant talent people in different professions to shine and improve their career through each of our events. •We know you are so excited and working hard these days for the launch of “Top Model of the World Philippines 2016” in Melbourne, one of the major projects in 2016. Can you share more details about it, Choy? The motivation of “Top Model of the World Philippines” (TMWPh) is to promote closeness among the overseas Filipino communities. In its desire to further enhance the Filipina as a multi-talented person, it wants to show the world the exceptional character and distinction of a person who will always nurture her roots and be proud of it. Top Model of the World Inc. in the Philippines is proud of its association with TFAPM, and the final is expected to happen in early July 2016. The winner will represent the Philippines in the forthcoming Top Model of the World 2016 competition

21

Melbourne Style Watch Winter 2016

The event will certainly draw attention and participation from dominant pageant operators in various jurisdictions among the overseas Filipino communities. At this stage, we are coordinating with them. The media launch is being done by Asia Journal Publications Group, based in Los Angeles, California including other media partners in the Philippines. Any interested parties can direct their queries to me at faceaustralia@gmail.com. •What other events are being overseen by and lined up by The Face Australia Promotions and Management to rock Melbourne this year? -Miss Asia Pacific Australia 2016 - August 2016 -Top Model of the World Philippines – July 2016 -TFAPM Heritage International 2016– Sept. 2016 -Miss Teen Princess Australia 2016 – Nov. 2016 •Choy, you have come into your career as a National Payroll Manager in a well-reputed organization. Beauty pageants are just your part time hobby. How did you get into this industry? I never had plans to run a beauty pageant, it just happened by accident. It started with a charity event in the Philippines where I represented a Rotary Club in the West which my husband was president of. After that, I organised various successful charity events, eventually joining with a Charity Club named Share Me A Dream Bisayan Community Club of Victoria Inc. Then I was given a chance to help out in a local Filipino Beauty Pageant and ended up running it the following year. I added other pageants one by one after starting my event company, The Face Australia Promotions and Management. I enjoy this so much that planning and organising a beauty pageant comes naturally to me. •What matters to you most as a beauty pageant organizer? It is not about money or big profits. Sending candidates to international pageants with good results is such an inspiration that you become a bridge to make their dream comes true. It gives me the drive to work harder and ensure my beauty pageantry continually improves so I can produce more Beauty Queens and Kings. •What has been the biggest difficulty so far? I would love to run a big budget beauty pageant here in Melbourne, but since I just started with this industry, it is difficult to find sponsors and support from other people. •What’s your favourite part of a Beauty Pageant? Discovering new beauties and talents. My aim is to charge my candidates with passion and enthusiasm about feeling good. The participants of the pageant don’t only have the chance to overcome their shyness and gain experience and confidence, but also get opportunities to work with different people, learning their diverse culture in the process. •Men generally have limited opportunities and less interest when it comes to this industry. How do you manage being so motivated in that limited space to

Melbourne Style Watch Winter 2016

bring them on the ramp/stage? I just use my charm to persuade them to join. I have started nominating candidates to represent Australia in an international pageant, and I’m hoping for good results so I can show them male pageantry is as exciting as female pageantry.

Melbourne Style Watch Winter 2016 Melbourne Style Watch Winter 2016

TFAPM is not just a popular beauty pageant organizer; they are also involved in many charity programs too. You can only appreciate a beautiful soul if they have a beautiful heart. Running beauty pageantry has given me the chance to meet new people, make connections, and gain support. I use these connections for my charity projects. Linking beauty pageantry with charity gives more meaning to all the hard work I invest. It is a win-win situation. I produce beauty queens and make their dreams come true at the same time I am able to help indigent families through my charity projects. Let’s talk a bit more about yourself… •What do fashion & beauty mean to you? You don’t have to wear expensive brands to be fashionable and beautiful. What is important is that you confidently feel beautiful no matter what you wear. •How would you describe your personal style? It’s versatile, as I always like switching from one look to another. I love wearing gorgeous high-heel shoes, it gives me more confidence. •How about your interests in fitness and personal grooming? I’ve never been a gym fanatic, but I love using ballroom dancing to get fit and feel beautiful. •Favourite way to relax and de-stress? Sitting on my favourite couch in my room (I call it the Filipino Room) and watching Filipino drama. •What’s next for you professionally? Owning a modelling school or agency and producing more international pageants in Australia •You are originally from Surigao City, Philippines. What brought you here and how has your life changed since? When I came to Australia for a visit at the invitation of my sister, I met my now husband at a Philippine Independence Ball. Australia has given me so many personal and professional blessings. All blessings don’t come easy, I have to work hard to gain what I want in life. I learnt to never give up and try until I succeed despite failures. That made a big change in my life. •Any last words? I would like to extend my sincere thanks to my team and friends, as without their support, I wouldn’t be here. Hector Calara, who always believes and supports me in all my projects without expecting any returns. Gabby Louise Martinez, my best trainer and choreographer; Sarah Symes, my daughter and beauty pageant adviser; Felina Fyfe, Terry Kane, Edith Feliciano, Roy Esagunde, Myka Baculi, all my beauty queens, and all my candidates, candidate’s parents and supporters; and especially my hubby Steve and my son Adam, who understand why I am always out. 23

Celebrity Fashion Stylist & Fashion Columnist Reza Seedin Photography, Greg Desiatov

Her Trends How much attention would you pay to look worthy when its come to fashion and trend? Have you got all the trends covered? Well, we wouldn’t say there is anything totally ground-breaking in women’s wear, but there are lots of new things happening out there in the fashion land when it comes to TRENDS for this season W16. Every so often, whether it’s a change in the weather or a little monotony setting in, we want to effortlessly renew our wardrobe. As this season kick starts, we’re taking you back to 70’s with a twist. From structured jackets to Bohemian influence done luxuriously, trendsetters this season are clashing prints and textures, and winter floral prints. Also, graphic prints will be dominating throughout the season. Soft colour pallets with leather details, monochrome, and bold colours are top of this season’s trend. What girl or woman doesn’t love GOLD? Well, even gold is making its way back with great silhouettes! Designers also kept a black colour palate as is fashion custom. Not to mention, sports luxe has been on-trend in every corner of the fashion land.

Men’s Trends

As we close the door on everything from summer’s vibrant coloured polos to suits with details, it’s obvious it was a ground-breaking year for menswear trends. As we approach W 2016, more than ever this season men are paying more interest to their look. This winter is the season for checks, polka dots, and printed shirts. Also, layering is a key essential for this season with graphic print knits and geometrics. Classic cut bomber jackets and biker jackets give a unique style edge for a variety of occasions with their inherent versatility allowing them to be dressed up or down. Also this season, the tailor-made three-piece suit in navy, charcoal, and black is once again making a comeback as a smart option for the sharp dresser. Give the suit a pop of colour by the way of accessorizing and layering. Speaking of, the checked suit is back, meaning the old school vintage look is reaching a new level. Sports luxe has become a trend in the men’s style department as well. Done right, the season’s trends have elegance and a modern touch with just the right amount of edginess. Done wrong, it looks like you raided your grandfather’s closet. 25

Summer Bodies Are Made In The Winter By Gayan Perera With the arrival of winter, it can be tempting to let your fitness take a back seat. The trick is to build positive habits and maintain momentum. Here are 7 Tips you can start implementing with your training, nutrition, and lifestyle for maximum results in building a better physique.

1. Sleep More Lack of sleep inclines you to choose poor quality, high-calorie food. A study published in Canada in 2012 found that participants who had more than seven hours sleep lost the most weight regardless of initial body composition, age, gender, and other factors.

2. Drink Lime and Salt Water in the Morning This will help you to start the day right. Salt is very important for nourishing the adrenals. The adrenals are responsible for major hormones involved in stress management and energy levels such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. Lime has an alkaline line effect on PH levels despite its acidic taste.

3. Favour Strength Training and Avoid Steady – State Cardio for a Better Physique Unless your goal is competing in an endurance sport, you shouldn’t be performing any type of steady-state aerobic training because it will compromise your body composition gains. Researchers recorded power athletes had more powerful type II muscle fibres (70%) than endurance athletes (37.5%), while the untrained men scored 61%. For the best body composition gains, strength training is the way to go.

4. Train Large Muscle Groups First

5. Meditate

Lose fat and build muscles by training large muscle groups first. Perform large muscle group exercises such as deadlifts, squats, power cleans, bench presses, chin-ups, and barbell rows at the beginning of your training session before moving into isolation exercises. This will allow you to achieve the greatest anabolic response to your training.

Researchers believe meditation has positive ffects on reducing mental and physical stress, lowering cortisol levels, and reducing ageing. It also helps you appreciate your life more, mprove your metabolism, increase your attention span, improve functioning of your brain, have a good night’s sleep, and much more

6. Avoid Stretching Prior to Training

7. Eat Your Carbohydrates at Night

Performing static stretches and PNF stretching prior to training will make muscle tissue weaker and more vulnerable to an injury.

This goes against common practice in the fitness industry. A study was done in 2011 with 78 Israeli police officers over six months, divided into two groups. One group had their carbs mostly in the morning, and the other group in the evening. The evening group lost more fat and saw significant improvements in different health markers such as blood glucose levels, insulin sensitivity, etc. Three other studies done in 1997, 2013, and 2014 suggested the same results.

Rather, stretch as a warm-up using the same muscle group and joint movement you plan to use in your workout. A low load warm-up in which you perform lifts with your body weight or very light weights to activate the muscles has been shown to improve strength and power by increasing motor unit activity. Stretching has proven benefits of increased joint range of motion. Stretch after training or in an entirely separate session 4 to 6 hours away from your resistance training session.

Eating carbohydrates at night will also enhance your sleep.

Feeling Beautiful

Without a doubt, prettier ladies have major advantages. It has been proven by many psycho-economic studies that beauty can positively impact the chance of getting better jobs and higher salaries. The bias towards physically attractive people places them at a higher social status and contributes to their happiness. It is believed that we subconsciously, think “what is beautiful, is good” and this has its influence on our decisions when it comes to making selections.

There is a strong belief that “looking more beautiful” is regarded as “non-negotiable” and there are higher standards of beauty today than in the past. Researchers have defined our attitude toward beauty as the combined interaction between two main areas; “looking” beautiful and “feeling” beautiful. Looking beautiful comes from our inherited genes as well as enhanced beautification from the use of different hair styles & colours, cosmetics, contouring, and dressing with the correct colours for the skin type and body shape. More recently, the touches of cosmetic injections to moderate facial wrinkles and fill lost fat to give the younger appearance have also been used to enhance beautification. However, the ultimate aim is to achieve “emotional beauty” which defines our charisma and confidence together with style and look. So, ‘feeling’ beautiful should be the goal. “Wellness beauty” is defined as sleeping enough hours, eating healthy food, and exercising regularly. Being a cosmetic doctor and a trainer, I always recommend spending time to educate ourselves about the principle of beauty and the aim to achieve wellbalanced facial proportions. It is important to know the skills to inject, but it is more crucial to know the art of facial proportions. This illustrates the difference between an artist and an amateur practitioner. As a cosmetic physician, I believe it is important that my patients understand the reasons for their facial treatment and see the point of beautification. Feeling good after a procedure is a must as it is the aim to satisfy the holistic emotional beauty.
