Season Outlook Optimism is running high for the Missouri State women’s golf team as it enters the spring portion of its 2009-10 season...and with good reason. The Bears are coming off a fall season in which they captured two tournament titles and put a big dent in the school record book. As they enter the all-important spring season, MSU is looking to build on the fall and make a strong run at its first post-season play in nine years. “I really like where we are going into the spring season,” said Bears’ coach Kevin Kane. “We’ve learned how to win and done it in different kinds of situations and conditions. Our fall season obviously went well and we need to carry that momentum into the spring.” MSU picked up its first tournament win in over two years Sept. 21-22, rallying from a four-stroke deficit in the final round with a school-record 290 to post an 11-shot victory in their own Payne Stewart Memorial. Just over three weeks later, the Bears posted a more impressive win at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate. Again, they rallied on the final day, shooting 296 to overtake nationally-ranked Iowa State and Illinois and win by four shots. The Bears closed out the fall with another strong performance at the Pat Bradley/FIU Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla., finishing fifth after notching a school record 890 total for 54 holes. “We have good depth and balance,” Kane said. “Without question, the best in both those areas we’ve had. We know whenever we tee it up that we have a chance to get great play from anyone.” “I think as much as anything, though, we’ve become a gritty team that really competes. These players, all of them, really battle and have become tough as nails on the course,” he added. An illustration of that balance and depth can be found in the numbers, as the Bears’ top five all rank in the top 13 in the Missouri Valley Conference in scoring average after the fall season. Additionally, less than two strokes separate those five, while another couple of Bears who didn’t see regular action are also ranked in the top 50 in the league. Senior Stacey Rodger is perhaps the team’s most improved player and ranked fifth in the league in scoring average in the fall at 76.33. After a junior season marred by illness and injury, she has rebounded to become a vital member of the Bears’ lineup. She posted the team’s best score in two of the last three tournaments and
uuHermine Greyling

uuHeather Smith finished no worse than 14th overall in any of the three. Seven of her last 10 rounds were 75 or better, including a career-best 69 in the final round at Florida International. Sophomores Catherine Dolan and Kelsey Welber picked up where they left off a year ago, when they were the only freshmen on the Valley allconference team and ranked 1-2 on the team in scoring average. Dolan, who was the ‘09 MVC Newcomer of the Year after leading the team and ranking fourth in the league, is ranked fourth again after posting a 76.13 mark in the fall. She led the Bears at two of the five fall tournaments, including the Hawkeye Intercollegiate, where she paced fourth. Welber averaged 78.1 in the fall and posted her fourth career top-five finish when she tied for third at the Stewart Memorial, shooting a career-best 70 in the final round. She led the team in scoring average last spring and was second overall. It took longer than expected, but freshman Heather Smith made a big splash after redshirting a year ago due to injury. She averaged 78.00 in the fall, second among league freshmen and fourth on the team. Hermine Greyling is a true freshman who joined the Bears after a standout junior career in South Africa. She posted a pair of top-five finishes in her first semester and ranked third on the team with a 77.67 scoring average, which was best among Valley newcomers and ninth overall. While the Bears’ top five was a constant throughout the fall, they’ve been pushed all season by sophomores Emily Potts and Emily Matthews, and freshmen Emma Clegg and Amy Bowen. Potts and Matthews are much improved from a year ago, having cut five strokes off their respective scoring averages. Potts ranked in the top 25 in the league (79.2) while playing in two fall tournaments, while Matthews carded her first collegiate round in the 70’s at the Stewart Memorial. Clegg averaged 83 in a pair of tournaments and is ranked in the league’s top 50, while Bowen was playing her best golf at the end of the fall. The Bears open the spring campaign at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate, Feb. 21-23 and conclude the six-tournament slate with the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Evansville, Ind., Apr. 18-20, where they’ll be chasing that post-season berth.

Coaches Kevin
kane
Kane earned his bachelor’s degree in Communications from Northern Iowa in 1984. The Bernard, Iowa, native and his wife, Laurie, reside in Springfield with their two daughters, Kelsey (19), a freshman at MSU, and Allison (16).
Head Coach 8th year at MSU (16th overall) Northern Iowa, 1984 In his eighth season directing the Missouri State program, Kevin Kane has brought renewed recognition and respect to the Bears’ program and taken it to a level of success unprecedented in school history. Kane has made a habit of turning struggling programs around and has the Bears in the middle of an historic turnaround. Since 2002, the Bears have steadily worked their way back into the regional spotlight, climbing from a sixth-place conference finish the year prior to his arrival to a record-breaking year in 2006-07. The Bears climbed to as high as 58th nationally three years ago, the loftiest ranking in school history, and closed out the season 20th in the Central District. MSU has rewritten the school record book over the past seven seasons and put itself in position to make a run at its first post-season competition since 2001. The recently completed fall season was the best in school history as the Bears won two tournaments and continued their assault on the record book. They posted a conference-best 304 scoring average and captured titles at their own Payne Stewart Memorial and the Hawkeye Intercollegiate. In their Stewart victory, the Bears stormed from behind in the final round with a school-record 290 to capture the crown. At the final fall tournament, the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational, MSU shot 296297-297--890, the best 54-hole score in school history The Bears placed third at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship for the second time in three seasons in 2007, although that was a disappointment after their record-setting regular season. MSU captured a pair of tournament titles that year and finished second twice. They were the highest-ranked team in the Valley throughout the season and had three all-conference performers, including the inaugural MVC Player of the Year Sally Hinton. Two seasons ago, the Bears enjoyed another strong regular season, only to stumble in the conference meet, where they finished sixth after being picked to finish second in a pre-meet poll of the league’s coaches. Senior Missy Linnens earned all-conference honors and was the second MSU player in as many seasons to be named the league’s top player. Prior to his arrival at MSU, Kane spent eight seasons at Northern Iowa, where he rebuilt a team that had finished more than 100 strokes out of second-last place in the conference the year before he took over leadership of the program. In his last four seasons guiding the Panthers, they were the only team to finish in the top three at the conference meet all four years. In 2002, Kane guided the Panthers to two tournament titles and second place at the MVC Championship — the highest finish in school history. He also was voted MVC Coach of the Year for the second time by his peers in 2002 after previously winning the honor in 1998. Success for the Bears hasn’t just been limited to the golf course. In the classroom, they led all MSU’s women’s sports teams in grade point average in the 2003-04, 2004-05 and 2008-09 seasons and are perennially well represented on the Missouri Valley Scholar-Athlete Team. This past season, MSU was ranked 24th nationally among all women’s golf programs over all divisions with a 3.53 team GPA. That came on the heels of a 2004-05 season in which the Bears’ recorded an identical 3.53 GPA and ranked 16th nationally.
Don
mills Assistant Coach Fifth year Don Mills is in his fifth full season with the Bears, having joined the program as an assistant coach in February, 2005. Mills has brought a wealth of knowledge from a lifetime around the game as a player and teacher. He is a member of the Professional Golf Teachers and Coaches Association and serves as the teaching professional at The Range at James River in Springfield. He retired from a career at Jumping Jack Shoes in 1997. An accomplished player with seven career holes-in-one to his credit, Mills competes frequently on the state and local amateur circuit and has been a past Springfield Senior Golf Association champion. He also is a past winner of the Missouri Golf Association Senior Four-Ball Championship and runner-up at the MGA Senior Amateur. “We’re so lucky to have Don as part of our program,” says head coach Kevin Kane. “He’s been able to pass along a lot of knowledge, common sense and counsel to our players and me. He’s a good coach, has helped to make me a better coach and helps make our players better. Don’s an important part of our team.” Mills and his wife, Nancy, reside in Springfield.

This is Missouri State Mission
Missouri State University is a public, comprehensive university system with a mission in public affairs, whose purpose is to develop educated persons while achieving five goals: democratizing society, incubating new ideas, imagining Missouri’s future, making Missouri’s future, and modeling ethical and effective behavior. The University’s identity is distinguished by its statewide mission in public affairs, requiring a campus-wide commitment to foster competence and responsibility in the common vocation of citizenship. The academic experience is grounded in a general education curriculum which draws heavily from the liberal arts and sciences. This foundation provides the basis for mastery of disciplinary and professional studies. It also provides essential forums in which students develop the capacity to make wellinformed, independent critical judgments about the cultures, values, and institutions in society. The task of developing educated persons obligates the University to expand the store of human understanding through research, scholarship and creative endeavor, and drawing from that store of understanding, to provide service to the communities that support it. In all of its programs, the University uses the most effective methods of discovering and imparting knowledge and the appropriate use of technology in support of these activities. The University functions through a multi-campus system that is integrated to address the needs of its constituents.
uuConstructed in 1908 as the first campus building after the founding of Missouri State University, Carrington Hall (above) houses many of the University’s administrative offices, as well as an auditorium that is used for classes, concerts, films, lectures, and other special events.

Academic Success Achievement Center The academic and developmental well-being of the modern student-athlete is a vital facet of the overall educational experience, brought into focus by the Achievement Center for Intercollegiate Athletics (ACIA). Established in 1996, ACIA assists more than 500 student-athletes. ACIA acting director Darren Wienberg works with four graduate assistants and tutors from academic disciplines to strengthen the student-athlete academic base. Staff members work to monitor academic progress, registration and computer labs. An ACIA emphasis is to work with first-time freshmen and transfers to ease their academic adjustment. The goal is to develop good academic habits at the beginning of the MSU experience. All new athletes attend weekly meetings with an ACIA staff member. Required study halls meet five nights a week and are divided by academic specialties. In monitoring eligibility, the ACIA has faculty representatives in each academic college to assist with academic monitoring. Staff members meet with individual professors as necessary, and the department’s compliance staff monitors adherence to NCAA regulations for all current and prospective student-athletes.

Facilities Athletic Training The MSU Athletic Training staff has combined for more than 90 years experience in athletic training. Included are Director of Athletic Training Services Ivan Milton, Assistant Director Robin Meeks, athletic trainers Jim Penkalski, Shannon Derricks and Steve Sawchak, and five graduate assistants. All are certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association and licensed by the Missouri State Board of Healing Arts. Also included are 14 athletic training students who work with student-athletes with supervision by staff members. A great asset is the involvement of physicians and medical personnel from the community and Missouri State’s Taylor Health and Wellness Center. MSU also receives consulting services from area physicians in a variety of specialties, including cardiology, chiropractic, dentistry, dermatology, internal medicine, general surgery, gynecology, maxiofacial
surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, opthamology, optometry, hand/wrist surgery, otorhinolaryngology, podiatry, radiology and urology. These physicians are available to MSU student-athletes on an immediate referral basis and several visit the Athletic Training room on a weekly basis, providing added convenience for the athlete. MSU Athletics also enjoys around-theclock Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) access. Athletic Training Services is headquartered in Forsythe Athletics Center and maintains satellite facilities at Hammons Student Center and in the Hammons Field clubhouse. All three are used for therapy plus practice and game preparation and post-event treatment. Each is stocked with stateof-the-art therapy equipment with all rehabilitation done on campus. Included is a Cybex Norm 2,000 Isokinetic Testing Unit and a Dynamic Motion X-ray machine.
Strength & Conditioning Physical development of more than 500 student-
athletes to increase athletic performance, decrease the chance or severity of injury and enhance sportspecific athletics development are the goals of MSU strength and conditioning. Strength coach Terry Sauerbry and assistant strength coach Carl Christensen supervise the 7,200-square-foot facility in the Plaster Sports Complex that is utilized by all 16 sports. Sauerbry and Christensen guide the student-athletes through programs designed to improve individual skills and overall team performance. The programs integrate all phases of development, including free weights, multi-joint exercises, plyometrics, conditioning, flexibility, speed and nutrition.
Top-Notch Courses
The MSU strength and conditioning staff works with coaches and Athletic Training Services to develop programs suited for each sport and its student-athletes. Areas of concern in each participant are identified and a strength program is put in place to address all items with the ultimate goal of improving competitive performance. The Plaster Strength Center, one of the largest of its kind in the Missouri Valley Conference, has eight squat racks, four platforms, four benches and four inclines. There is a full range of dumbbells, a warmup room, and a main room to handle large numbers of athletes from multiple squads.
The Bears are fortunate to enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship with all of the top courses in Springfield, which also are among the finest in the region. Missouri Valley Conference The Missouri Valley Conference is in its 103rd year in 2009-10, and the na-
tion’s second-oldest NCAA Division I conference continues to be a leader in college athletics. Based in St. Louis, The Valley continues to lead by example as one of college athletics’ most progressive conferences. The Valley emphasizes the importance of the student-athlete and is aggressive in providing opportunities for its member institutions. During the tenure of Doug Elgin, its ninth and longest-tenured commissioner, The Valley has been aggressive in hosting NCAA events in St. Louis. This continuing involvement in hosting NCAA events represents one of the most concentrated stretches of host opportunities for any university or conference in the 70plus year history of the national championship tournament. In 2010, the Missouri Valley will host an NCAA men’s basketball regional, while The Valley has hosted three Final Fours this decade (women’s events in 2001 and 2009, and the Men’s Final Four in 2005). The league had previously hosted men’s regionals in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2007; and a men’s first/second round event in 2002. The 2003-04 season was a landmark season for the conference as State Farm Insurance and the league came to terms on an agreement that provides State Farm with title sponsorship of all the league’s 18 championships. The conference’s progressive marketing and in-house television package has helped open doors to regional and national sponsors outside of the realm of title sponsorships. Meanwhile, the league has been progressive in other areas, as it has taken its merchandise program in-house, while offering e-commerce solutions for league apparel, photography and conference-wide videostreaming.

All-Conference The seeds for this vision were planted by eight administrators representing five institutions, who met in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 12, 1907. The five schools which formed the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association were Washington University of St. Louis, and the state universities of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Two months after that meeting, two more schools -- Drake University and Iowa State College -- were admitted. In the fall of 1907, basketball became the first competitive sport. Today, the league sponsors the following sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country and track & field (indoor and outdoor), men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball. While The Valley no longer sponsors football (it did from 1907-85), six league members compete in football at the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) level as Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois play in the nine-member Missouri Valley Football Conference (with North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Western Illinois and Youngstown State). Athletic accomplishments on the men’s side include 10 national basketball championships, 16 trips to the NCAA Final Four, a 1989 national baseball title and 19 College World Series qualifiers. In 2001, Missouri State added to The Valley women’s accomplishments, as the Lady Bears advanced to the Women’s Basketball Final Four in St. Louis. Creighton (2004) and Missouri State (2005) have claimed national championships (WNIT) in women’s basketball, while MSU also has a 1992 NCAA Women’s Final Four appearance. And while the inclusion of women’s sports under a comprehensive athletic umbrella is a recent development (1992) in the league’s storied history, over the years, Valley student-athletes and coaches have become household names both during their collegiate careers and, for some, professional careers. From its early beginning to its current standing on the map of college athletics, The Valley will always continue to be proactive in its approach. League members include Bradley, Creighton, Drake, Evansville, Illinois State, Indiana State, Missouri State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State. Eastern Illinois is an affiliate member in men’s soccer, while Central Arkansas and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville begin affiliate men’s soccer membership in 2010.
