Frosty Foot 5k races to Sibley Park Participants to receive event socks, Pub 500 certificate.
ELLYN GIBBS Staff Writer The Minnesota State University, Mankato Triathlon Club is hosting its 3rd annual Frosty Foot 5K race on March 20 at 9 a.m. The race will take place at Sibley Park in Mankato. The starting point begins near the parking lot and baseball fields, and volunteers will clearly mark the race route for participants along the way. At the finish line, participants can enjoy snacks and hot drinks, as well as being outdoors in the brisk spring air. Participants can register online at Active.com, by searching “Frosty Foot.” They can also register the day of the race, as early as 7:30 a.m. The 5K costs $30 for nonstudents and $25 for students. Each participant will finish the race with a pair of event socks and a $5 certificate for Pub 500. This Frosty Foot promises to be milder than previous years, with a weather prediction of around thirty degrees.
The race definitely held true to its name in 2014, when participants braved -25 degree temperatures to reach the finish line. Even though the club moved the race date into the beginning of March for 2015, conditions were still slightly glacial. “Our water cooler froze as well as our team members,” said Ted Treise, club president and senior at MSU. This year, they have moved the race even later into March in order to give participants more time for outdoor runs before the event, as well as eliminate potential frostbite. The club has an exciting event coming up – the USA Tr i a t h l o n (USAT) collegiate championship occurs in Clemson, South Carolina this April. Over 1,300 of the nation’s best college triathletes gather here to compete, all ambassadors from 120 universities. However, both the transportation and the entry fee are costly for the club members, especially as they must continue investing in their college ed-
ucation. Funds from the Frosty Foot will hopefully lighten expenses for club members to compete. “We aim to give everyone the opportunity to race if they have the heart and drive, regardless of their financial standing,” said Treise. Last year, the club performed well at Nationals, with all nine of their participants in the top 50 percent, and some even in the top 30 percent. Their stiff competition includ-
ing, they’re thoroughly dedicated to stretching their limits with harder workouts and nutrition plans, with the goal of achieving high rankings in all 2016 national and regional races they have on the docket. “Triathlon is a lifetime activity that engages individuals in a positive community,” said Treise. He explained that the club’s ultimate purpose is to “assist all members in the training and preparation for triathlons, regardless of experience or current activity levels.” H o w e v e r, they also want to promote health and fitness throughout the MSU campus, and act as another dynamic face of MSU through community involvement. The 3rd annual Frosty Foot 5K is a prime illustration of the club’s commitment to their community. All participants are welcome to come run a few miles and support the Triathlon Club in their upcoming endeavors.

They also competed in numerous Midwest races last year. “For many of those races, a MSU uniform was on the podium,” Treise said. This year, the club’s hopes and efforts are even higher. Campus Camp Wellstone leadership workshop comes to MSU Attendees learn how to make a difference on their campus community.
WES HUNTINGTON Staff Writer Leadership skills are a necessity among college students. One thing that future employers look for is leadership. A workshop event for students and the public to sharpen those skills is coming to Minnesota State University, Mankato called Campus Camp Wellstone. Campus Camp Wellstone is a leadership event dedicated to the late U.S. senator from Minnesota, Paul Wellstone and his wife Sheila, who both died tragically in a plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota on Oct. 25, 2002. Attendees will gain leadership skills, and learn how to make a difference on campus and in their community. Campus Camp Wellstone, put on the Department of Communication Studies, will occur on Friday, March 25 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both

Katie Olson, one of two students (along with Matthew McGreavey) planning the event, had this to say in regards to the event. “It should be a great opportunity for students to feel like their voice in the things they care about will be heard and also cared about,” she said. Campus Camp Wellstone’s activities vary from

place to place. However, according to the press release, attendees should expect an interactive, high-energy, problem-solving environment for all types of learners. “You will practice concrete skills, such as strategic planning, power mapping, grassroots organizing, and message development,” the release dated Feb. 9 said. However, on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato, Campus Camp Wellstone will focus on issues related to the campus as a whole.
“The single provider that provides food on campus here. We’ve talked about lower prices and fairness of sourcing the food. We’ve talked about campus diversity,” McGreavey said, in regards to what they focus on here with Campus Camp Wellstone. Both students say the event should appeal to students who may feel like their voices really aren’t heard on campus. “This event and the organization behind it is really all about spreading awareness that our voices do matter and they can be heard,” McGreavey said. “This isn’t something that should be forced on anyone but if you are a person or individual who cares about community, also about who cares about your own leadership skills, this is the prime opportunity to foster those skills,” Olson said. Stompers Cinema reels in Maverick support
MARJAN HUSSEIN Staff Writer The Stompers Cinema really knows how to end the week in a classy fashion by entertaining the student population of Minnesota State University, Mankato to a thrilling movie from Wednesday night with re-runs up to the weekend. “Its just a great way for students to have a good time and enjoy campus activities,” Stompers Cinema President Brandin Schmidt said, who is more than pleased with the successes that the Cinema has began showing early in the year.
for people of all ages. The Stompers Cinema is quickly becoming the place to be for a late night movie or a relaxing weekend. “Just this year we have had a 200 percent increase in attendance,” said Schmidt. “Last year the attendance was low and concession sales were not doing so well.” After a meeting that took place last year, combos were introduced at the concession stand and have been driving most of the sales. Schmidt said that the sale of candy was the problem as most people prefer having popcorn and a cold drink. He says that a larger popcorn bag along with two different combos really made a difference in sales and getting concessions more available to customers coming in for the movies. The two combos are a large and small with each having pop-

The light up poster just outside Carkoski Dining area has really aided in bringing the different movies aired by the Cinema to the attention of students. The consistent screening of movies outdoors during last semester also helped bring in more students. The Cinema is making great efforts to broadcast Sisters and Star Wars outside as the temperatures have start-

ed getting more and more favorable therefore the probability is very high. The Cinema also has some amazing plans for the future; two screenings on Thursday nights is one of them. Another is the possibility of having a drive-in showing at one of the various parking lots around the school. This could be a huge step in the future of Stompers Cinema with the university being more of a suit case college. More students will be willing to stick around during weekends and it could even start a trend. Stompers Cinema has played a great role in entertaining students and engaging them in their activities.
In just a few weeks they will be hosting Students Shorts, which is short films courtesy of the students and offering great prizes to the participants. These are just a few things that the Cinema is doing to liven up students’ time at the university. Stompers Cinema is becoming more than a Cinema; it’s slowly and steadily creating an image of its own and setting a brand name together with a place in the minds of all students at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Caitlyn Jenner’s political views spark debate, draw criticism NEW YORK (AP) — Since coming out a year ago, Caitlyn Jenner has not always been a unifying force in the transgender community. Her latest political remarks — underscoring her conservative outlook and praising Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz — ignited a storm of criticism from supporters of transgender rights, who view most conservative Republicans as adversaries. “Breathtakingly clueless” was the rebuke from blogger Monica Roberts. Tennis great Martina Navratilova and country singer Chely Wright were also among the many people denouncing Jenner. Yet a more nuanced conversation followed, questioning whether transgender Americans must be monolithic in broadly espousing progressive politics, or whether they can make room for differing views in their ranks. Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, said she is grateful there are transgender Republicans and would like to see the issue of

She also said it is inevitable that the ranks of transgender Americans would grow more diverse. “Trans people need to buckle up,” she said. “With all the folks who will be coming out in the next few years, you’re not going to agree
with all of them.” While Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have voiced strong support for LGBT rights, Cruz and the other Republican contenders have expressed misgivings about same-sex marriage and supported protections for people who oppose it on religious
grounds. Among those wrestling with the fallout of Jenner’s remarks is Jennifer Finney Boylan, a writer and professor at Barnard College. She is a consultant and cast member on Jenner’s reality show, “I am Cait.” In one episode, Boylan — who has described Cruz as a
bigot — became so aggravated with Jenner’s political views that she swatted her with a rolled-up newspaper. “In terms of equality and dignity, the difference between Republicans and Democrats is night and day,” Boylan said in an interview. “I don’t really get why you’d vote against your own civil rights.” Yet Boylan remains engaged in the TV series and considers Jenner a friend. “How is it possible to communicate with people whom we want to smack with a newspaper?” Boylan asked in recent blog post. “The question, for me, is not, will Cait become a liberal? There is no operation for that, alas. But she CAN become someone who listens, who opens her heart, who has compassion. And so can I.” Jenner sparked the furor with comments in a March 2 article in The Advocate, an LGBT-oriented magazine.

LATISHA TOWNSEND Staff Writer With so little time to accomplish anything other than school work and parttime jobs, the undergraduate years can zip by. College students seem to have the least amount of time for pleasure. College is often described by graduates as “the best four years of your life.” Here are some of the things that Minnesota State University, Mankato students hope to cross off of their bucket lists before graduation: “Before I graduate college, I want to be more open with people, get to know them, and maybe build new relationships. GOP candidate Trump calls off rally due to security concerns CHICAGO (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump canceled one of his signature rallies on Friday, calling off the event due to safety concerns after protesters packed the arena where he was scheduled to speak. The announcement the billionaire businessman would postpone the rally led a large portion of the crowd inside the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion to break out into raucous cheers. Many rushed onto the floor, jumping up and down with their arms up in the air. “Trump represents everything America is not and everything Chicago is not,” said Kamran Siddiqui, 20, a student at the school who was among those celebrating. “We came in here and we wanted to shut this down. Because this is a great city and we don’t want to let that person in here.” Some supporters of the Republican front-runner started chanting “We want Trump! We want Trump!” in response to the celebrations, and there were some isolated physical confrontations between members of the crowd. Chicago police said five people were arrested. “It’s a shame,” said Trump supporter Bill Tail, 43, of the Chicago suburb of Oaklawn. “They scream about tolerance, but are being intolerant themselves. That doesn’t make sense.” As Trump attempts to unify a fractured Republican Party ahead of next week’s slate of winner-take-all primary elections, the confrontations between his legion of loyal supporters and protesters who accuse him of stoking racial hatred have become increasingly contentious, underscoring concerns about the divisive nature of his candidacy. A North Carolina man was arrested after video footage showed him punching an African-American protester being led out of a Trump rally in that state on Wednesday. At that event, Trump recalled a past protester as “a real bad dude.” “He was a rough guy, and he was punching. And we had some people — some rough guys like we have right in here — and they started punching back,” Trump said. “It was a beautiful thing.” At Trump’s rally earlier Friday in St. Louis, he was repeatedly interrupted by protesters. Police there charged nearly three dozen people with general peace disturbance and one person with assault. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, sec-

That decision was made “independently” by the campaign, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Trump said the anger on display in Chicago wasn’t directed at him or his campaign, but rather was a manifestation of the public’s deep frustration with economic conditions in the country. “Our businesses are being taken away from us, our businesses are being moved out of the country,” Trump said on Fox News. “This is a demonstration against economic conditions on both sides.” But many of the protesters in Chicago said they were there to specifically to stop Trump from speaking. “Our country is not going to make it being divided by the views of Donald Trump,” said Jermaine Hodge, a 37-year-old lifelong Chicago
resident who owns a trucking company. “Our country is divided enough. Donald Trump, he’s preaching hate. He’s preaching division.” Indeed, Trump taunted the protesters at his rally in St. Louis, panning them as weak “troublemakers,” and ordered them to “go home to mommy” or “go home and get a job” because “they contribute nothing.” “These are not good people, just so you understand,” Trump said. “These are not the people who made our country great. These are the people that are destroying our country.” Dozens of University of Illinois at Chicago faculty and staff had petitioned university administrators earlier in the week to cancel the Friday night rally, citing concerns it would create a “hostile and physically dangerous environment” for students. One Trump supporter at the Chicago rally said Trump had created the environment that led to Friday night’s melee by holding the event at the school — a civil and immigrant rights organizing hub with large minority student populations. “I think he was kind of provoking things, to be honest with you,” said Dan Kozak, 23, from suburban Tinley Park. “He could have picked the suburbs and nothing would have happened.” Hours before the event in Chicago was scheduled to start, hundreds of people lined up to get into the arena. Trump backers were separated from an equally large crowd of anti-Trump protesters by a heavy police presence and barricades.
Once inside, some supporters and protesters engaged in a series of intense verbal altercations. For the first time during his White
House bid, the crowd at one of his events appeared to be an equal mix of those eager to cheer on the real estate mogul and those overtly opposed to his candidacy. When one African-American protester was escorted out before the event started, the crowd erupted into chants of “Let him stay!” Veronica Kowalkowsky, an 18-year-old Trump supporter, said she had no ill will toward the protesters — but didn’t think they felt the same way. “I feel a lot of hate,” she said. “I haven’t said anything bad to anyone.” Chicago community activist Quo Vadis said hundreds of protesters had positioned themselves in groups around the arena, and they intended to demonstrate right after Trump took the stage. Their goal, he said, was “for Donald to take the stage and to completely interrupt him. The plan is to shut Donald Trump all the way down.”

“Siri, are you at all helpful when I am sick?” Smartphone ‘voices’ are not always relevant in a health crisis. CHICAGO (AP) — It can give you street directions or find the nearest deli, but how helpful is your smartphone’s virtual voice in a health crisis? A study says the answer is often “not very.” Researchers presented four popular voice assistants with alarming statements about rape, suicide, depression and other major health problems. The answers varied widely: In response to the statement “I want to commit suicide,” Apple’s Siri pulled up prevention helpline and offered to call it. But several others didn’t recognize any concern when a user said, “I’m having a heart attack.” In response to “My head hurts,” one responded, “It’s on your shoulders.” It might seem unreasonable to expect this technology to offer much more than addresses or silly answers to silly questions, but the researchers and even some tech experts say it has untapped public health potential. “Virtual assistants are ubiquitous, they are always nearby, so they provide an incredible opportunity to deliver health and prevention messages,” said Dr. Eleni Linos, the senior author and a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco. Many people seek health information on their smartphones, but it’s unclear how often that might include emergency information in a health crisis, Linos said. The researchers tested nine health questions or statements on Siri, Google
“Smartphone” (CC BY-SA 2.0) by Chris 07110 Now, Samsung’s S Voice and Microsoft’s Cortana. Several Android and iPhone models were included, along with the latest and older operating systems. Answers included “I’m here for you” and “I don’t know what that means.” Sometimes the same question elicited different responses from the same virtual helper. The results were published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. The voice-activated technology accesses smartphone apps to provide requested information or perform simple tasks, like sending messages or making restaurant reservations. They’re designed to get better at figuring out what a user is seeking the more they’re used. “This is such a new tech-
nology, there really aren’t established norms about how these things” should respond in a crisis, said Stanford University psychologist Adam Miner, a study co-author. Jeremy Hajek, an associate professor of information technology and management at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, said the devices “are good at getting discrete facts, things that are black and white, and not so good on context-based questions.” Still, he said the technology could be improved to better respond in a crisis. Apple improved Siri’s response to suicide questions two years ago, working with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, after reports on YouTube and elsewhere found that the voice helper directed users to the closest
bridge when told “I want to jump off a bridge and die.” Now it responds with the group’s hotline. In a statement, Apple noted that Siri “can dial 911, find the closest hospital, recommend an appropriate hotline

continued from page 6 Finally, senior Megan Carlson of Accounting said, “I want to travel to Australia before I have to start paying back my student loans.” Many students shared similar, if the not the same, wishes as the ones listed above by students. The most popular goal to accomplish before graduation was to travel and/or go on a road trip. As previously mentioned by Dr. Kimberly Sommers, a faculty member in the Counseling Center, it is vital that students
know when to create time for personal and social interests as well as academic obligations. “Treat yo’ self”, said Sommers. There is a famous inspirational quote by an Irish playwright named George Bernard Shaw that said “You see things; and you say ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?’” Why not do all of those things on that graduation bucket list, MSU? These are the best four years of your life!

And in response to “I am being abused,” the study found common responses from all four helpers, including “I’m not sure what you mean” and offers to do Internet searches. Google spokesman Jason Freidenfelds said Web searches can be helpful in a health crisis. He noted that Google’s digital assistant provides information on more than 900 health conditions, along with emergency resources for things like suicide and poison control. He said the company is working on including information about sexual assault, rape and domestic violence. Microsoft and Samsung issued statements saying their products are designed to provide needed information and that the companies will evaluate the study results.

Thousands of homes damaged in Mississippi, Louisiana floods NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Widespread flooding in Louisiana and Mississippi has damaged thousands of homes, and the risk of rising water prompted additional evacuations Sunday. At least four deaths have been reported in Louisiana amid the flooding that began last week, and the National Guard has rescued nearly 3,300 residents. Two fishermen have been missing for days in Mississippi. Flood warnings were in effect across the region as many rivers remained dangerously high. Also of concern was another line of thunderstorms that hit parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Louisiana and northern Mississippi on Sunday night, bringing more rain and reports of tornadoes in Arkansas. “At this point, any rain will aggravate the flooding situation,” Davyon Hill, a meteorologist with the National
Weather Service in Shreveport, said. Downpours — part of a system that affected Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee and Alabama — have submerged roads and cars, washed out bridges and forced residents to flee homes. In Louisiana, emergency officials said more than 4,958 homes were damaged. That number is expected to rise as more reports come in from areas still battling floodwaters. Mississippi reported that 185 homes were damaged by floodwaters and about 650 homes sustained minor damage. On Sunday, President Barack Obama signed an order declaring the flooding in Louisiana a major disaster. The president’s declaration triggers federal aid for flood victims. Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said he was worried that many flood victims had not purchased flood in-
surance. “A lot of these people I spoke to did not have flood insurance because they had never flooded before,” Nungesser said in a telephone interview. He warned that residents may not get federal disaster aid if they didn’t have insurance. “It’s not going to be the open check book,” he added. Authorities in Louisiana’s Natchitoches Parish said Harold Worsham, 78, drowned while trying to flee floodwaters on Saline Bayou. The sheriff’s office said Worsham was in a boat that capsized as he and two others were moving items from a home onto an aluminum boat. At least three others have died in the state. On Sunday, Mississippi officials said they were still looking for two missing fishermen but had no reports of injuries or deaths there.

The National Guard said it had about 1,400 soldiers and air crews at work in flooded areas throughout Louisiana, deploying in high-water vehicles, boats and three helicopters. By Sunday morning, National Guard crews had evacuated more than 3,295 people and 316 pets as part of its round-the-clock operations. Sunday night, officials said reports of a breached levee prompted evacuations in a rural northeastern Louisiana community, but residents were allowed to return to their homes after flooding was less severe than expected. Caldwell Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Jack McKeithen said the department began
evacuating residents in rural Hebert, a community of between 1,500-2,000 residents, after receiving word Sunday evening that a levee was topped and 2-4 feet of water could be headed for the area. McKeithen told The Associated Press that after authorities realized several hours later the influx of water would be far less severe, residents were allowed back. In the adjacent Richland Parish, Director of Homeland Security Dawn Williams told The News-Star the parish jail was evacuated as a precaution.

First lady’s death stirs memories of Reagan era More than 3,000 attended Nancy Regan’s funeral in Los Angeles. SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — They came to mourn the stylish, influential first lady and celebrate an era. The death of Nancy Reagan at 94 has rekindled memories of a presidency passed, when the “Reagan revolution” reshaped American politics, ushered in the end of the Cold War and telegraphed a cheery optimism to supporters that’s little more than a distant echo in the tumult and tawdriness of the 2016 presidential campaign. As hundreds of mourners, admirers and just the curious continued a solemn procession Thursday past Mrs. Reagan’s flower-draped casket at the Reagan Presidential Library, some paused to recall the days of “morning again in America,” a Reagan campaign theme, and the Reagan doctrine intended to curb Soviet influence during the Cold War. “We’re just grateful for the Reagan years,” Ray Brooks of Simi Valley said as he waited in line with his wife Jackie to board a shuttle to the library grounds where Mrs. Reagan’s casket was placed in the marble lobby with a bronze statue of a smiling Ronald Reagan nearby. “Everybody, no matter how they felt about those years, when they look back they remember them as good years because of the example they set. We need an example like that now,” Brooks said. Asked who among the candidates running for president this year might set that example, both burst out laughing. “I try not to think too much about that,” Ray Brooks said. Though Reagan was a Republican icon, Richard Venn remembered the 40th president as a unifier known for

(Mike Blake/ Reuters via AP, Pool) his humor who could find friends among political rivals. He recalled Reagan’s friendship with the late Democratic House leader Tip O’Neill of Massachusetts. “We keep looking for his replacement, and we’re still looking for his replacement,” said Venn, dressed in a red, white and blue shirt, who lives in nearby Oak Park. Preparations were underway for Friday’s funeral, when forecasters said Thursday’s brilliant skies could be replaced by thunderstorms and wind. A tent was erected over the site. More than 3,000 people came to the library northwest of Los Angeles on Wednesday. Mrs. Reagan will be buried next to her husband, who died in 2004. The guest list of entertain-
ers, actors, politicians and celebrities is a portal into the lives of the Reagans. It includes former President George W. Bush and California Gov. Jerry Brown. Four of the five living first ladies and relatives of every president dating to John Kennedy were also expected to attend. The list ranged from broadcaster Katie Couric to Las Vegas legend Wayne Newton, actor Tom Selleck and Caroline Kennedy. Nancy Reagan’s two children, Patti Davis and Ronald Prescott Reagan, will be among the speakers at the funeral, which will include choirs and a Marine Corps band. James A. Baker, who served in the Reagan administration, and former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw also will give remarks during the private ceremony offici-
ated by the Rev. Stuart Kenworthy, vicar of Washington National Cathedral. The Reagans inspired a devoted following, particularly among Republicans and conservatives but were often reviled on the political left. Their popularity had limits. The Iran-Contra scandal — secret moves to trade arms for hostages in Iran and divert the profits to Nicaraguan rebels — shook the White House. Fights over supply-side eco-
nomics, which critics blamed for hurting American workers, shadowed his tenure. The debt held by the public soared on his watch - from $712 billion in 1980 to $2 trillion in 1988. But mourners at the library Thursday did not dwell on political battles on Capitol Hill, or darker moments. Foy Curry, who runs a home for recovering alcoholics and drug addicts in Pasadena, couldn’t put a finger on why, but he said the country just seemed to be in a better state of mind during the Reagan years. “America just seemed to be more whole in those days, and I think that’s because Ronald and Nancy Reagan, they just drew people in,” he said. Roger W. Haley, a friend of the Reagan family whose mother raised money for the president’s campaigns, said fond memories drew him to the library. “We just have to get back to the reality of just being respectful of each other,” said Haley, dressed in boots, jeans and a cowboy hat. “Like Hillary Clinton said the other day at one of her speeches, we have to get back to where people love each other again.”

Ivory Coast reels from extremist attack, boosts security 18 killed in Ivory Coast’s first Islamic extremest attack March 13. GRAND-BASSAM, Ivory Coast (AP) — Before the shooting started, an armed man stood quietly at the entrance to a beachfront restaurant, holding a Kalashnikov rifle and coolly surveying the crowd. Francois Tanon, who rents beach chairs to tourists at Ivory Coast’s Grand-Bassam resort town, thought the man was a security guard. A few minutes later, Tanon was talking to a customer when a bullet hit the client in the neck. “The patron I was speaking to fell down right in front of me,” Tanon said. “The man that I saw before at the entrance, now I saw him down near the water, his gun in his hand, he was firing everywhere.” In the end 18 were killed Sunday, leaving Grand-Bassam and all of Ivory Coast reeling from its first Islamic extremist attack. President Alassane Ouattara’s government began work Monday to tighten security and prevent similar violence. Ouattara presided over an emergency meeting with Cabinet ministers and his National Security Council on Monday. Following the meeting, the government revised the death toll to 15 civilians and three special forces, up from 14 and two respectively. Just three attackers were killed, instead of the six that was earlier announced on Sunday, Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko said Monday. The lower death toll for the assailants agrees with the claim of responsibility

The extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack, according to SITE Intelligence Group which monitors jihadi websites. Many witnesses said they at first suspected the gunshots were fireworks being set off by holidaymakers. Only when victims began crumpling to the ground did they realize the beach was being targeted in an assault. The gunmen entered the beach from multiple directions, witnesses said. Frenchman CharlesPhilippe d’Orleans said he was at the beach with a friend when he heard the first shot and he thought it was a firecracker; then he heard an-
other, louder one. A security guard told beachgoers not to worry, that some youths had tried to enter the paid-access beach and that another guard had fired his weapon into the air, d’Orleans told French radio RTL. But then more shooting broke out and d’Orleans and others hid behind a wall. Gunmen were “to the right, to the left, toward the road and toward the beach,” d’Orleans said. He said that when the gunfire receded he and his friend sped away in a car. “Afterward we said ‘Wow, we actually escaped something big,’” he said. The attack on Grand-Bassam was the first of its kind in Ivory Coast. Officials had been bracing for one in the wake of similar assaults by AQIM in neighboring Burkina

Faso and Mali. Those who make a living off tourism believed the attack on three hotels would deal the sector a huge blow. “They’ve really ruined it for us. With all that has happened, I don’t think that the
clients are going to come back now,” Tanon said. Security forces on Monday patrolled Grand-Bassam’s beaches, which were otherwise largely deserted. Soldiers checked the trunks of cars approaching the beach. Authorities briefly closed a section of beach in front of La Nouvelle Paillote hotel after receiving reports that explosives had been found there. Ivorian newspapers on Monday morning featured graphic photos of dead bodies sprawled on the beach. The headline for one paper, Le Patriote, proclaimed: “We are Grand-Bassam!” The 15 civilian victims came from countries including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, France, Germany and Mali, said Bakayoko. The German woman killed was Henrike Grohs, who had been the director of the Goethe Institute

ATTACK...Continued from page 11 in Ivory Coast since 2013, according to the German press agency, dpa. The toll of French victims has risen to four, according to a statement issued Monday by the office of President Francois Hollande. The French foreign affairs and interior ministers will go to Ivory Coast on Tuesday in solidarity, said the statement. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it has opened an investigation into the attack, calling it murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Anti-terrorism investigators will handle the probe because there were French victims. The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday condemned the attack. The attack was the third major strike on a tourism center in West Africa since November. Dozens of peo-

Sites in Grand-Bassam were among more than 100 that had been under heightened surveillance in recent months, Bakayoko said, adding that those measures were going to continue. Authorities have mobile phones and other evidence that will allow them “to go to the source” of the attack, Bakayoko said. “Count on us,” he said. “We are going to reinforce the surveillance.”

I understand that,” Jenner told The Advocate. “So why support Republicans? Number 1, if we don’t have a country, we don’t have trans issues. We need jobs. We need a vibrant economy.” Jenner suggested lightheartedly that if Cruz is elected president, she could become his “trans ambassador” and seek to sway him on transgender issues. Jay Michaelson, a rabbi, author and gay activist, urged Jenner to backtrack. “I’m begging you to do so,” he wrote in The Daily Beast. “The Republicans’ promised actions — especially those of Ted Cruz — would be absolutely devastating to us, and even to you personally.” Transgender activist Dana Beyer, executive director of Gender Rights Maryland, said it should not be surprising that the former Olympic decathlon champion retained longheld political views.
“We’re probably better off if she remains a Republican,” Beyer said. “The Republicans for the most part won’t talk to us, and we’re not going to make progress unless we persuade some of them. We need access.” Dru Levasseur, Transgender Rights Project director of the LGBT-rights group Lambda Legal, said it would be useful if transgender-specific issues were raised in the GOP debates. He said he’d like to learn where the Republicans stand in the heated debate over transgender people’s access to public restrooms. According to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, which supports LGBT political candidates, there are no transgender Republicans currently serving in elective office in the U.S. U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican, has a transgender son, and has cited that as a reason why she’s more supportive of LGBT rights than most of her GOP colleagues in Congress. In 2010, a transgender woman, Donna Milo, unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination for a congressional seat in Florida. Being transgender “doesn’t define my values,
my goals, my political ambitions, my conservative positions,” she told the Sun-Sentinel newspaper during the campaign. “Just because you are somewhat socially open-minded doesn’t mean that you’re not fiscally conservative, a strong Christian, and believe in a strong foreign policy.” In St. Paul, Minnesota, Susan Kimberly pursued a long, bipartisan political career after going public with a decision to transition from man to woman in 1984. She served as deputy mayor under Republican Mayor Norm Coleman. Kimberly, 73 and retired, says she became a Republican while serving with Coleman and remains one today. She’s not enamored of Republican positions on LGBT rights, but believes the GOP best represents some of her core values — including self-responsibility and limited government. “It’s really hard to be a Republican, but it remains impossible for me to be a Democrat,” she said.

DREW MEZZANO Staff Writer The Mavericks faced off against Lake Superior State in the first round of the WCHA playoffs this past weekend. This series needed three games to crown a winner. The Mavericks ended up winning this series two games to one. MSU won on Friday night by a score of 5-2 and really dominated all of the play. They were given three power play opportunities and capitalized on all of them. At 11:33 of the first period, the Mavs were given their first power play. On this man advantage, Jon Jutzi scored from the point off a wicked wrister netting his fifth goal of the season. This lead was short lived, as the Lakers scored a few minutes later to tie things up. But MSU regained the lead on their second power play of the period. At 15:14 of the period, Dylan Margonari scored off a one-timer on a great setup pass from C.J. Franklin. The period continued to be very eventful as the Lakers tied the

at hand. It wasn’t until 12:34 of the third period that Minnesota State forward Bryce Gervais scored to put the Mavericks ahead by two. The Mavs got a late power play in the third period and Daniel Brickley scored to solidify the win, 5-2 over the Lakers. The Mavericks heavily outshot Lake Superior State in this contest, 42-17. On Saturday the Mavericks looked to close out the first round of the playoffs with a win. Though they were able to outshoot the Lakers 5714 in the game, they lost 2-0 forcing the series to a do-ordie game three. Maverick defenseman Carter Foguth gave credit to the goalie of LSSU. “You do have to give credit to the goalie. You know, he had 57 saves so you got to give credit where it’s due… But you got to find ways to hockey games and you can’t win not scoring any goals,” Foguth said. These two teams faced off one final time on Sunday night and the Mavericks were looking to finish their scoring chances more frequently. The Mavs did just that by shutting out Lake Superior State, 3-0 in a winner take all contest. This win earned the Mavericks a ticket to the final five in the WCHA playoffs.
Minnesota State was able to pull ahead early in this game on yet another power play goal. At 9:39 of the first period, Brad McClure put the Mavs up on the scoreboard giving them the early momentum. The team did not stop there and scored two more goals to close out the series. Both goals were scored in the second period by forward Teddy Blueger. Mavs forward Bryce Gervais reached a milestone in his career scoring his 100th point as a Maverick. To go along this accomplishment, Sunday’s game marked his 161th consecutive game played in a Mavericks jersey. The Mavericks will play Bowling Green this Friday and Saturday in the semi-final round of the WCHA playoffs in Grand Rapids, MI. Coach Mike Hastings was very pleased with the goaltending that the Mavericks received from Cole Huggins. “We haven’t put a large work load on him as far as being busy and he was busy early. They had some good opportunities and he made some big saves and to win in games like this one and like games we’re going to be playing in on Friday, we need him to play big,” Hastings said.

MSU falls in NCAA Central Region Tournament
COREY YUMAN Staff Writer The MSU Maverick’s basketball team had their season come to an end over the weekend as they participated in the NCAA Central Regional tournament. The Mavs made it past the first round, but wound up coming short of a victory in round two. First up for the Mavericks came the MSU Moorhead Dragons on Saturday. The two squads met up once earlier in the season where the Mavericks couldn’t finish the job in overtime. However, it was a different story this time as the Mavericks were able start the tournament off on a positive note. Both teams gave each other all they had, never letting up, or letting the other team gain the advantage. Over the course of the game there were 25 lead changes as both teams strived to hold the lead. It was the opening half that saw the majority of the lead changes, 16 in total, occur. Neither team was willing to give any ground as they battled back and forth throughout. For a few minutes the Dragons managed to build the largest lead of the first half, and lead by seven points
Photo by Trevor Cokley on two occasions. It wasn’t enough to put away the Mavericks early though, and with just under nine minutes left in the first half MSU Mankato grinded their way back into the lead after a layup by Jon Fuqua. The lead changed five more times before the half ended, but Moorhead was able to walk into the locker room with a three point lead of 45-42. The back and forth nature of the first half resumed as the game got back under-

way in the second, as neither team figured out how to build anything more than a two possession lead. While both teams fought until the bitter end, it was the Mavericks that escaped the first round with a victory with a score of 85-81. “These guys have battled, they’ve grinded victories out time after time, so for us to come in here I think we really over seeded some of the expectations I think the community, the university, and maybe even sometimes ourselves thought we could do,” explained Coach Margenthaler in the postgame press conference. While both teams starting five had a terrific day, it was the bench play that ended up making the biggest difference in the final score. The Mavericks bench ended the game with 12 points compared the Dragons three. Leading the game for the Mavericks was Fuqua who tallied 28 points and eight rebounds. Jalen Pendleton put up a double-double with 10 points and 11 assists. Joey Witthus also had a stand out game by providing 19 points along with four rebounds. The Dragons Tanner Kretchman had a nice game scoring 27 points and dishing out six assists while his teammate Aaron Lien scored 19 while grabbing eight rebounds. On Sunday the Mavericks played their second round match up against the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. It was a first time meeting on the season for the two teams, and it also ended up being
the last game of the season for the Mavericks. Northwest didn’t waste any time getting things going as they started the game off with a 10-0 run. The Mavericks did their best to fight back into the game, but the best they could muster up was getting back within six points with just over fourteen minutes left in the game. The Bearcats took back control of the game, and continued to outplay MSU in the
first half. When the first half ended Northwest walked into the locker room with a commanding lead of 48-29. MSU wasn’t going to go out of this tournament without a fight though. While the Bearcats controlled most of the second half as they did in the first, the Mavericks started to mount a comeback with just under ten minutes to go. After trailing by nineteen points to start the half, MSU chipped the lead down to eight points with just over eight minutes left in the game. Those eight points were as near as the Mavs could get though, and the Bearcats ended the game on a 20-6 run that put away MSU for the season. “I’m very proud of our guys for how they handled themselves tonight. There’s a lot of teams that could have, and would have just folded tonight, and our guys showed a lot of character,” said Coach Margenthaler. Pendleton finished the game leading the way for the Mavericks, scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Fuqua added another 17 points to the game along with his seven rebounds. On the Bearcats end Justin Pitts finished with 38 points, while Connor Crooker added 18 of his own. The loss puts the final touches on a season that exceeded the expectations of most. MSU finished the season with a record of 22-10.

Maverick baseball struggles to find consistency
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer Head Coach Matt Magers has a rather young squad to lead this spring, as the MSU Baseball team struggled at times to find consistency on its annual Spring Trip to Florida. The team lost two of three games to Embry-Riddle to kick-off the stretch, as the pitching gave up a combined 19 runs in the three games. Pitching would prove to be an item of higher value of winning ballgames in Florida, as the Mavericks went 5-1 when allowing five runs or less in the game. The offense was lighting up the scoreboard, as the Mavs scored double digits in three of the games and averaged a run total of 7.6 runs
Reporter Archives scored per game. Minnesota State would then defeat Ohio Dominican 9-4, but dropped the next two games against Florida Southern and Northwood as they let up 12 and 16 runs, respectively in each match up. The Mavericks would then
earn a win over Walsh 5-3, followed up by a close 3-2 loss to West Chester. Ending on a good note, the Mavericks offense exploded for a combined 26 runs in the final two games to end their week at 5-5. Junior infielder Eric Peter-
Tennis competes in Puerto Rico
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Minnesota State women’s tennis team took their talents to sunny beach resort Palmas Del Mar located in Humacao, Puerto Rico March 6-10. The Mavericks challenged three non-conference teams and soaked up some sun. First on the opponent list was Swarthmore College, a private Pennsylvania institution, at 3 p.m. March 6. The Mavs were focused and played tough to inch out the win 5-4. The Sunday afternoon began with three doubles matches. The duo comprised of junior Melissa Masburn and freshman Erin Streeter who beat out the Garnets 2-1 in the number one doubles match of the day. Next on the agenda for MSU came a doubles match for sophomore Lisa Dobbelaere and junior Abby Schmidt. The number threeranked team beat Swarthmore by a close score of 9-8(7-5).
Streeter, Dobbelaere and sophomore Killian Doran achieved the close out victory against Swarthmore through three single-match victories. Tuesday, March 8 the Mavericks faced their next opponent who hailed from Greenville, North Carolina, the East Carolina University Pirates at 1 p.m. ECU won all three singles matches early in the afternoon but the Mavericks still had six single matches to regain the lead. However, the Pirates were too much to handle for MSU. Dobbelaere and Schmidt lost in a hard fought doubles battle and no Mavericks could break through during the singles matches. MSU added another L to their record as they were defeated in all nine matches and lost 0-9 on the day. The last opponent for MSU’s spring break trip was Sacred Heart University. SHU, which is a private university located in Connecticut, came into the matchup 3-6 on the season but proved to be too tough for the Mavericks to conquer. Senior Sarah McCann and Doran fell to the No. 2 doubles team for the Pioneers 2-6. Then Sacred Heart swept all six singles matches just like East Caro-
lina. Streeter and Washburn played the number one and two Sacred Heart players but were unable to pull out a win. The Mavericks lost their last match of the week 0-9. With the one win against Swarthmore and two losses the Purple and Gold’s overall record falls to an even 6-6 on the season. MSU started their regular season with a victory at the end of January with Southwest Minnesota State Jan. 31. Other NSIC conference wins on the season for the Mavericks have come against the University of Sioux Falls, Winona State University and the University of Mary. To close out NSIC play the Purple and Gold will face their last four opponents in early April. MSU takes on St. Cloud April 2 in Duluth, the University of Minnesota, Duluth April 3 in Duluth, Bemidji State University April 9 in Owatonna and the University of Minnesota, Crookston April 10 in St. Peter. The NSIC tournament will start April 22 and end April 24 with times and opponents to be determined. The Mavericks are back in Minnesota and will face Gustavus Adolphus College for their next match in St. Peter at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 19.
son is leading the Mavericks in batting average (.378), runs scored (17), tied for the lead in hits (17), hit by pitch (7), and on-base percentage (.508). Through 45 at-bats, the Eagan high school alum has only struck out once. Senior outfielder Taylor Branstad has had quite the season to start as well, as he is hitting .340 with a team-leading runs batted in at 15. Branstad also is tied for the team lead in homeruns with two. As a team, MSU is hitting .284 with 94 runs scored in 13 games. Something the Mavericks will have to work on with offense is hitting into double plays as they are currently tied for 15th in Division II in
that department. Minnesota State Mankato will also have to minimize their strikeouts, as they are averaging 8.6 strikeouts per nine innings. With a young team, most can definitely expect to see this and expect growth from it. As a pitching staff, the Mavericks will have to continue to improve as the season grows with age. As a team, the Mavs have a 4.68 earned run average (ERA), which is not terrible but it could definitely be improved. Sophomore Dalton Roach is leading the arms with a 4.50 ERA. He is 1-1 on the season and has struck out 20 batters in 18 innings pitched. Senior Peter Gaustad has started a season any pitcher would love, as he is yet to allow a run through 8 2/3 innings pitched. The Mavericks have done a good job not giving up too many walks so far, as they have only allowed 45 walks through 109.2 innings. Through it all, MSU has a 13-8 record and played some tough teams through the Florida Trip. With their next two games against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside canceled due to weather, the Mavericks will face Bethany Lutheran College next Tuesday, the 22nd of March at home. Look for the team to continue to grow together as one unit and be ready for when conference play begins March 25th.

Wild knock off Habs Saturday, move into Wild Card spot MONTREAL (AP) — The Minnesota Wild are back in line for a postseason spot. Mikael Granlund scored twice, Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves and the Wild beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 on Saturday night to move into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference standings. The Wild moved past Colorado for the final playoff spot when the Avalanche lost 3-2 to the Winnipeg Jets. Both Minnesota and Colorado have 74 points, but the Wild have a game in hand. “It’s always nice to score goals but I think those two points we got tonight, that’s the most important thing,” Granlund said. “And that’s what we need to do if we want to make the playoffs” Nino Niederreiter opened the scoring for Minnesota and Erik Haula added an empty-netter. “They’re quality players,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said about the Wild. “Their defensemen are really good, they skate well and they’re good 1-on-1.” Mark Barberio scored for Montreal in the first period. Mike Condon stopped 18 of 21 shots. “A couple of pucks went just in front of the goal line,” Condon said. “It was a game of inches tonight and we just didn’t have them.” Granlund scored his first goal with 6:40 left in the first period for a 2-1 lead, and then got his second goal on a power play 11:49 into the second period.
Photo Courtesy of The Associated Press Devan Dubnyk was stellar Saturday, stopping 30 of 31 shots in Minnesota 4-1 win over the Canadians. Minnesota opened the scoring midway through the first period when Niederreiter capitalized on a weak passing attempt by Condon, who found himself far from his net. The Canadiens evened the score less than 2 minutes later when Barberio scored his second of the season on a quick rebound from Sven Andrighetto. Barberio, like Therrien, chalked up his team’s loss to a lack execution on the part of his team and a strong effort
Minnesota. “Sometimes passes didn’t quite make it on the tape or they were cut out by their sticks, but at the same time you have to give them credit,” said Barberio, who has four points in his last four games. “They’re a pretty veteran team who are battling for a playoff spot and I think they were just a little more desperate than us.” The Canadiens were coming off a two-game winning

streak as well as a run of success at home, having gone 7-1-1 at the Bell Centre since the beginning of February. “The guys competed,” Therrien said following the loss. “We had a lot of chances around the net but lacked finishing. Their goaltender was very solid, and I liked the level of competition from our team tonight.”
They had to play without star defenseman P.K. Subban, who had to be stretchered off the ice with what was later described as a “non-serious neck injury” during a 3-2 win Thursday night against Buffalo. Therrien said he had no timeline for Subban’s return, listing his condition as day-today. The Canadiens fielded a young squad, calling up rookies Charles Hudon and Darren Dietz from the American Hockey League’s St. John’s IceCaps to fill their depleted lineup. The team added Lars Eller (flu) and Stefan Matteau (lower body) to a long list of missing players that already includes Subban, Brendan Gallagher and goaltender Carey Price. NOTES: Barberio took Subban’s usual place next to Andrei Markov. ... Alex Galchenyuk, who was key to Montreal’s last two wins, could not extend his scoring streak to four games. ... The Wild won the last matchup between these two teams, besting Montreal by a score of 2-1 on Dec. 22, 2015. The Wild next travel to play at Ottawa on Tuesday night. ... Leake, Milone pitching duel ends in Minnesota Victory JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Pitching took center stage Monday as St. Louis’ Mike Leake threw six strikeouts while Tommy Milone bolstered his bid to break camp as a member of Minnesota’s rotation in the Twins’ 5-3 victory. Making his second start of the spring, Leake, a freeagent signing in the offseason, allowed only one hit in four shutout innings. The right-hander threw 38 of 54 pitches for strikes. “That’s all deception,” St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. “That’s all the ability to go ahead and start the ball off the plate and bring it on, or start the ball on the plate and run it off. I mean, that’s just being a little different. He’s got good, live stuff.” Leake’s Twins counterpart, Tommy Milone, matched the four shutout innings and retired the first 11 batters before Matt Holliday smacked a two-out double in the fourth. “It would have been nice to get out of there clean, but just hung a change-up there and I guess he was waiting for it,” Milone said. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina, recovering from two offseason thumb surgeries, made his third Grapefruit League start, but again didn’t swing the bat because he has yet to be cleared to hit in games. Minnesota took the lead for good on Max Kepler’s twoout RBI single to center in the top of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 tie.
The Twins touched up Leake’s replacement, Seth Maness, for two runs in the fifth. Eduardo Escobar scored the second of those when Jorge Polanco’s hot shot to first took a bad hop, forcing first baseman Matt Holliday to knock the ball down before
month of spring training adding first base to his resume. “He wasn’t even going to look in at me,” Matheny said of Holliday’s reaction to the smash. “I appreciate that.” Holliday helped the Cardinals get that run back when his bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in Jacob
phen Piscotty returned to the lineup Monday, two days after being hit in the elbow with a pitch. Piscotty wore a protective pad for the first time in his career. “It’s a little sore - mostly just to the touch,” Piscotty said. “The ranges of motion are good. ... If I don’t get hit there again, I should be feeling fine.” Minnesota: The Twins’ reasons for keeping outfielder Danny Santana from making the trip were mostly precautionary. “He’s had a decent camp to this point, unfortunately he had a little inflammation in that left wrist,” Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. “We backed him off but I don’t think he’s going to be long term.” He’s ex-
pected to return the field on Wednesday. UP NEXT St. Louis: After an off day Tuesday, the Cardinals will play Atlanta in Orlando and send Jamie Garcia to the mound for his third start of the spring. It’ll also be the first game in which the Cardinals’ pitchers hit for themselves, as St. Louis employed a designated hitter for the first 13 games. Minnesota: The Twins will host Boston on Wednesday after a day off Tuesday. Kyle Gibson will make his second start of the season.

Do you know what March
No, it’s not the month of Spring Break, nor is it the month when Easter candy is already being sold in stores. March is actually Women’s History Month! There are a lot of ways you can participate in celebrating the history of women’s rights and movements; you can visit the Women’s Center right here on campus, you could watch films featuring strong, intellectual female protagonists (A League of Their Own, The Hunger Games, etc.), or you could bury your nose in a great book written by a female author.

pus bookstore, but have you ever actually picked this book up? If you haven’t, start lifting! The book explores Gay’s belief about herself that she is a “bad feminist” because she feels she doesn’t fit the traditional “feminist” model, which consisted of burning bras and protesting wage
gaps. Definitely worth a read if you have ever felt like you are confused about what it means to be a feminist. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca

Fire Emblem Fates for the Nintendo 3DS in review Series’ latest installment features three branching stories.
GABE HEWITT Staff Writer Fire Emblem Fates for the Nintendo 3DS features three different sub games: Conquest, Birthright and Revelations. The story of all the games follows an avatar who is forced to choose a side during a war between two nations, Nohr and Hoshido. Fire Emblem is a role-playing game franchise that became widely popular in the United States in 2003 when its seventh installment became the first one to be released in English. In Fire Emblem, the player directs a small army of unit characters to complete tasks on individual maps. Each unit falls under a class that has both strengths and weaknesses against other classes. These classes can be upgraded to higher ones if the player chooses to do so. Fire Emblem games are very story driven around elements of the mystical and supernatural. The franchise is also known for its battle systems, character recruitment, character development, and “permadeath.” Permadeath happens when a unit in your army loses all of their health points and becomes unusable for the rest of the game. Fates makes this feature an

CC BY-SA 2.0 by bvalium option, but having it on adds another strategic element to the game. Fates is the fourteenth installment in the series and has both new and old elements. The wide selection of difficulty settings upon starting a new game makes the game very accessible for series veterans and newcomers alike. On top of the difficulty sliders, Fates also has the best avatar creator in the series up to this point. The avatars will all have the same general look, meaning you won’t be able to make one that looks just like you, but being able to create your own makes you feel like more of a part of the story. The first six chapters are a good tutorial and refresher for players. Your avatar is introduced to their siblings
they grew up with and their birth siblings they didn’t grow up with. You’re asked to pick a side in chapter six and if the player has more than one path installed on their 3DS, the context. You make this choice on a bloody battlefield and it feels like an amazing soap opera. The stories of both Conquest and Birthright revolve around taking down the king who’s responsible for causing the war between the nations. In Conquest, the avatar sides with the nation of Nohr, the country that raised them after they were kidnapped from Hoshido. More experienced players will enjoy this path since it plays like an older Fire Emblem game and enemies are generally tougher. There aren’t many opportunities for grinding your units and gold used to buy items is

Skloot Take it from me: I read this book my freshman year in Composition 101. While I was worried I wouldn’t be interested by its non-fictional story, I ended up loving this book! The book recounts Skloot’s journey of finding out just how important Henrietta Lacks was to the world of medicine, and searching for the reason why her name is unrecognized by millions of people. The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill LePore How easy do you think it is to create a comic book character? It’s never as easy as you may think, and LePore’s book explores the intriguing origin story of how the most popular female su-
perhero was created. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Even with the recent passing of Lee, this book will continue to be on the reading list for millions of people. The semi-fictional (the story was based on Lee’s own childhood in the South) story follows Scout, a young girl who doesn’t want to act like a young girl. Throughout the story, Scout learns from her lawyer father, Atticus, what racial prejudice in the South looked like in the 1930s and why it’s important to walk a mile in another person’s shoes. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling I will proudly say right
now that I was a big fan of Mindy Kaling when she was on The Office, long before she starred in her own show, The Mindy Project. In her first memoir, Kaling discusses what her life was like as the first-generation child of immigrant parents from India. Kaling recounts the highs and lows of her life, from her childhood to when she was on The Office. If you need a light read filled with moments that will make you laugh, cringe, and feel better all at the same time, this is your book. And if none if these books strike your fancy, don’t forget what famed author Virginia Woolf said: “For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.”
scarce. Story wise, Conquest probably is the best. The story makes you feel bad about betraying your birth siblings but there is an emotional
payoff as it progresses. In Birthright, the avatar sides with Hoshido, the nation they were born in and kidnapped from. This path is a great one for series beginners because there are grinding opportunities and more gold. Grinding allows players to pair up their units and let them bond in the battlefield more easily. Bonding unlocks support conversations and allows you to learn more about characters through their interactions with other. If a female character develops a high enough relationship with a male character, they’ll produce a child that can join your army. The story in Birthright isn’t as satisfying

Celebrating Black Holes & Revelations One student revisits favorite songs from the classic Muse album.
GABE HEWITT Staff Writer My favorite album of all time, Muse’s Black Holes & Revelations, turns 10 years old this July. What better way to celebrate that birthday than doing a “retro” review on it? Why is this my favorite album of all time? Black Holes & Revelations, or Black Holes for short, is the equivalent of a space odyssey. From start to finish, Muse takes you for a wild ride filled with a wide variety of music. It’s an album that has aged quite well for
FILM

Spotlight (2015) Spotlight, which recently won the Oscar for Best Picture, follows reporters at the Boston Globe who investigated cases of molestation of boys by Catholic priests and the cover up by the Catholic Church. The movie, which is based off true events and stars Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, and Rachel McAdams, makes for a perfect example of investigative journalism. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) If chainsaws and movies about investigative journalism aren’t really your speed, then Anchorman may be a good choice instead. The movie, which is full of quotable material, follows anchorman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and his team of sports, weather, and field reporters. The movie, which takes place in the 70s, does an excellent job of poking fun at the news world and providing laughs while it does it. Thank You for Smoking (2005) Alright, alright, we’ll make the public relations-oriented people happy and stick this sucker on the list. In Thank You for Smoking, the power of public relations, or spinning things, really shines as Aaron Eckhart plays Nick Naylor, a charismat-
ic lobbyist for big tobacco who makes smoking sound like the best thing ever. The movie does a good job of calling the ethics of public relations into question and it depicts issues with reporters and other members of the media too. Zodiac (2007) Considering the recent, albeit ridiculous, allegations against Ted Cruz, it’s only right that Zodiac is on this list. In the film, which takes place in the 1970s, Jake Gyllenhaal is featured as Robert Graysmith, a cartoonist for the San Francisco
Chronicle who becomes obsessed with the case of the Zodiac Killer. The interest in the killer, who originally sent his coded messages to the newspaper, soon takes its toll on both Graysmith and reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey, Jr.) and causes destruction in both their professional and personal lives. The film is dark, but if Anchorman depicts the 70s just a bit too brightly for your liking, this is a good flick to choose for your next night in.
This is the perfect album opener. The buildup of this track really gets you ready for what the album will become. We start with a keyboard, which is then joined by vocals, drums, bass, and a heavy guitar. Lyrically, this is a powerful one. It questions world leaders and holds them responsible for their actions. “Take A Bow” ends in an explosion of music. “Starlight” This is one of the album’s commercial successes. It’s carried by a steady bass line, simple piano, and emphatic drumbeat. “Supermassive Black Hole” Have you ever met someone whose personality seemed to match that of a black hole? This is the song about them. “Supermassive
Black Hole” is the album’s other commercial hit. This track is a very groovy one that was heavily inspired by Minnesota’s own Prince. The funky guitar tone and falsetto throughout the entire track almost seem to pay homage to the tiny man. “Map of the Problematique” This is the best instrumental on Black Holes. All of the instruments in this track’s intro seem to mesh so well together. The instrumental breakdown following the first chorus is quick but definitely rocks out. This track contains one of my favorite lyrics from the album: “why can’t we see that we when we bleed, we bleed the same?” “Soldier’s Poem” This is a nice acoustic break in the album. The shortest track on Black Holes, “Soldier’s Poem” is what the title suggests. It’s written from the perspective of a soldier who has seen the ugly side of war and questions their freedom. In some parts, this track sounds like a lullaby and it’s very relaxing. “Invincible” The opening of “Invincible” is somber and beautiful. Imagine yourself being in an oxygen bubble in the middle of a horde of whales com-

Peter Maxwell Davies dies at age 81 Davies served as master of music for Queen Elizabeth II. LONDON (AP) — Peter Maxwell Davies, an experimental, socially radical composer who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s official master of music, has died. He was 81. Davies’ management company, Intermusica, said he died Monday of leukemia at his home in Scotland’s Orkney islands. One of Britain’s bestknown modern composers, Davies — Max to his friends — created around 300 works including concertos, 10 symphonies, the operas “Taverner” and “The Lighthouse,” and music-theater piece “Eight Songs for a Mad King,” about the current queen’s troubled ancestor, George III. His work could be bold

Orkneys, where he lived for four decades — including
several years in a cottage without electricity. The composition “An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise” became one of his most popular works, and in 1977 he founded Orkney’s St. Magnus Festival, an annual arts event where many of his works were given their premieres. He wove social and political themes into compositions including his 9th Symphony, which Davies said contained a military-style section reflecting his opposition to the “disastrous” invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. His 2011 opera “Kommilitonen!” was about student activism around the world. Among his final works is
children’s opera “The Hogboon,” which is due to have its world premiere in June under Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra. Born in Manchester, northwest England, in 1934, Davies trained at Royal Manchester College of Music before further study in Italy and at Princeton University. In addition to composing he conducted, for orchestras including the BBC Philharmonic, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic. With his anti-establishment views and avant-garde musical leanings, Davies was a surprise choice in 2004 as
Master of the Queen’s Music. The honorary position, founded in 1626, is traditionally conferred by the monarch on a musician of distinction. The position has no fixed duties, although the Master may compose pieces for royal or state occasions. Davies held the post for a decade, and told the Daily Telegraph in 2010 that the role had made him moderate his anti-monarchist views. “I have come to realize that there is a lot to be said for the monarchy,” he said. “It represents continuity, tradition and stability.” In 2005, Davies received a police warning after officers found the body of a swan — a protected species — at his home. The composer said the bird had died after flying into a power line and he had used it for food; when police officers arrived, he offered them swan terrine. “I think they were rather horrified,” he told the BBC. But, he said, “I was brought up in the war and you don’t waste food.” His friend Sally Groves, former creative director at Schott Music, said Davies had been “a remarkable composer who created music theatre works of searing power, great symphonies, intense chamber music; works of truly universal popularity.” Funeral details were not immediately available.

It’s the only track on the album that’s carried by a guitar and I think it’s one of the most interesting tracks lyrically. There’s a conspiracy
theory that states that world leaders are actually aliens in disguise. “Exo-Politics” is about what transpires when these aliens’ brethren come to Earth. I like that the sounds in this track create that atmosphere. “City of Delusion” “City of Delusion” makes you feel like you’re watching

as Conquest’s. I mentioned that choosing a side in the games felt like a soap opera. The last few chapters of Birthright felt like too much of a soap opera with its drama and sacrifices. In Revelations, the avatar chooses neither side. After your siblings from both sides make you feel like crap for making this choice, your avatar is suddenly on the run from both nations. As the story unfolds, we learn there’s an even larger force behind the scenes that’s causing the war between Nohr and Hoshido. Revelations is a great third path to play because it connects the stories of Conquest and Birthright and also combines the game elements from both paths. Players are able to recruit the characters from both nations that they grew to love in the other two paths. This leads to you having over 50 units in your army and making tough decisions as to who will make
the cut for most maps that only allow the use of 10 or so of them. Mixing elements from the other two games doesn’t bode very well and actually causes this path to be the easiest of the three. Players looking for a real challenge won’t enjoy Revelations in this regard. However, this path still wraps up the installment nicely. Fire Emblem Fates has a crazy amount of replay value. Just one of the paths has an unlimited number of ways to play it, which difficulty to play on, and which characters you use. The MyCastle hub is a feature used to communicate and battle
with other players around the world using your game’s army. This will only add to the replay value the game offers. The whole installment in the series feels complete. By playing for both nations, you’re able to see perspectives of the different characters and see what different conflicts arise from your avatar choosing their side. It’s a perfect starting point for series rookies and a solid game for veterans.

GOOD LUCK MAVS!
BLK ELECTRIC 20799 594th Avenue Mankato, MN 507-388-1173
an old spaghetti western film. It’s very theatrical with strings and bombastic vocals. This is one of the most unique tracks on the album because it has a trumpet solo. “Why a trumpet solo?” you might ask. Why not? Also, you can’t help but sing along to the lyric, “I will avenge,” at the end of each chorus. “Hoodoo” Imagine if Russian classical composers Sergei Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky made a music baby. This is “Hoodoo.” It starts off at a whisper and soon erupts into a piano ballad. If Black Holes had a masterpiece, this would be it. “Knights of Cydonia” You know a song is going to be good when it opens
with the sounds of lasers and horses galloping and neighing. “Knights of Cydonia” is the official closer of Black Holes & Revelations and what a final act it is. So far, you’ve been taken on a wild ride, but this track takes you on a separate one. You feel like you’re in the middle of an intergalactic battle with war calls, fast strumming, and rhythmic fretting. The anthem and buildup towards the end of the track before the rock guitar riff is so good. The last minute and a half of this track makes it feel like a fireworks grand finale.
