MSU Film Club hosts “A Concert for ClearCause” Headlining band WestSide Band will feature famous artists.
ASHLEIGH BAGSHAW Staff Writer On Thursday, April 14, the MSU Film Club will be hosting “A Concert for a ClearCause” at the Vetter Stone Ampitheater. The concert, which will run from approximately 6-9 p.m., will be headlined by WestSide Band and feature music from a range of big names, including the Rolling Stones, Santana and Prince. The event will also feature various food trucks on location selling delicious concert food, including hot sandwiches, burgers and kabobs. The ClearCause Foundation was started by Allen and Sheryl Hill, after their sixteen-year-old son, Tyler, died a preventable death on a student exchange trip to Japan in 2007. They learned through every parent’s worst nightmare the dangers that face students travelling overseas, and Sheryl now works tirelessly to ensure that U.S. students are able to stay safe overseas. Founded in 2010, ClearCause spent the first four years collecting data, providing survivor support, and advocating for protective laws. As a result of their hard

However, Hill wants to take the cause further, passionately noting that, “students’ well-being is not well-protected by any federal law. No standardized education helps students depart smart. It’s why we are on a mission to engage students as active participants in decisions affecting their health and safety abroad.” Now ClearCause is rebranding as DepartSmart. org to create awareness and online education helping to ensure every student returns
with a rewarding experience in an industry held to the highest standards. Hill believes “every student should know how to depart smart.” The first online module the organization intends to develop, entitled ‘Action Plan – Emergency Preparedness’, will cover what students should do in case of an emergency. Each module will cost $1015,000 to develop and support. Hill emphasizes that “safety means the world to

Man pleads guilty to posing as agent for a Comic Con VIP pass SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah man facing criminal charges for posing as a federal agent to get into a $10,000-a-head VIP room at Comic Con in Salt Lake City agreed to a plea deal with prosecutors Tuesday. Jonathon M. Wall, 30, pleaded guilty to impersonating a federal officer at the September 2015 pop-culture event where many people dress in elaborate costumes inspired by superheroes and science fiction movie characters. Prosecutors will drop a second charge of making a false statement in exchange for his plea. Wall claimed he was an agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations and needed a pair of
passes to a lounge room for famous guests to catch a fugitive, according to charging documents. He showed conference staff a photo of a real wanted fugitive and said he was there with a 60-person crew, prosecutors said. Wall acknowledged Tuesday that he flashed the federal identification he uses for his job at Hill Air Force Base. He said he came up with the idea on the spot and didn’t think a Comic Con staffer he tried it on believed him. Wall never made it to the VIP lounge, but a security guard who heard the story got suspicious and called the Air Force, which sent agents to question Wall and confirmed he

U.S. District Judge Jill Parrish asked the prosecutor whether Wall was dressed in a costume and pretending to be a character like thousands of others at the convention. Prosecutor Carlos Esqueda said Wall was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, not a costume or uniform. Wall, of Layton, faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine at sentencing set for June 9. The comic book convention attracted about 120,000 people and featured “Captain America” actor Chris Evans.

Catching the national championship on...TBS? Those without cable missed out on one for the record books.

SPRING FALL 2015 2016
LUKE LONIEN Sports Editor The NCAA National Championship game did not disappoint. I was sitting in my apartment watching the championship game with my roommates. One is a self-declared University of North Carolina fan; it has something to do with his fiancée being a fan of them since birth. I’m sure, either way, he was sweating bullets the entire game. My other roommate couldn’t care less whom won; he was just looking for good game to watch. Yeah, he got that. And a little bit more. We were watching the UNC “Team Stream,” which was playing on TNT, if you were wondering, and I couldn’t get over how biased the announcers called the game. I’m not oblivious that they were cheering for their team, but they were not recognizing how well Villanova played. Maybe I was just getting annoyed because my roommate loved the bias. Villanova’s “Team Stream”

Anyway, that was the least of my problems with how the game was presented. My biggest problem? The NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME WAS ON TBS. What? Why? Well, we know why. The answer is the green stuff that none of us college students have enough of in our pockets. That’s money, for those who didn’t make the connection. But for real, the game was down in viewership by 37 percent, according to USA Today. That is a record low, and comes a year after the game got a record high 28.3

million views for last seasons Duke-Wisconsin matchup on CBS. The game on TBS reached 17.8 millions viewers. Look at that, they used network television and got more viewers. Who would have thought? Here is the thing, NCAA, you do not get to complain about viewership when you put the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ON TBS. They may not have complained yet, so consider this a warning. I feel for the people who were unable to watch one of the best national championship games in history. These two teams deserved to be there, both teams played very well and provided a ton of entertainment. It was a very entertaining game, and
people missed out on it because the game was not on network TV. I was scrolling through my twitter and saw a tweet that tagged Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders that said “Which candidate can get the #FinalFour back on CBS? You have my vote.” Honestly, please do not do that to us again. On an unrelated note, the MSU Reporter website is up. themsureporter.com Go there and read all the good stuff we put out. be selling appetizer-sized food items representing cuisine from different parts of the world. Along with the diverse entertainment and booths, a silent auction will be taking place where people can bid on many interesting items and experiences, one of which is a dinner with MSU’s President, Dr. Richard Davenport. All proceeds will go towards international student scholarships. This is the festivals 39th year and is a culmination of the very diverse student population here on campus. MSU has over 1,100 international students who each bring their own unique talents and stories. “The depth and breadth of diversity in Mankato is striking,” Casula said, “and the Mankato Area International Festival is a great way to experi-
ence it.” These students enjoy sharing their cultures and perspectives with others, and Casula encourages students to attend the event, both in support for these students and to learn more about their cultures. “It is a tremendous opportunity for students who may not have the means or opportunity to study abroad to gain cultural competence right here at MSU,” Casula said. This event isn’t just limited to the people on campus. It is open to everyone who wants to learn more about different cultures, and the public is welcomed to join in the festivities. It is an event that everyone in the family would enjoy and learn from. Admission and parking are free.

you are proud of and want it to be seen, this is a great opportunity for you to display it for the public. According to Renee Turgeon, past Open Mic Night events have been a hit and have also been really fun. There have been some pretty serious performances but the overall event is mostly casual. Everyone in the public is welcome but many students attend this event. It is a great way to get your hard work out there and noticed by everyone. Again, Open Mic Night and Open Art Gallery will take place on Wednesday, April 13, in the Maverick Bullpen from 7-9 p.m. If you do not have a performance or piece of art that you want displayed you can still attend this event and just enjoy yourself. This event will be a great way to see other people’s work while meeting new people and socializing with friends. Learning to love, not label, your body type Despite pressure from the media, it is possible to be body-confident.
Opinion
KAARINA MAKI Staff Writer When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see someone who is too short, too wide, too… something? First of all, stop! Everyone is different, that’s what makes you unique! You can’t be “too” anything, you can only be you. Second, this kind of self-scrutinization is not new to anyone, but it shouldn’t happen. Unfortunately, the media is partly to blame. When they put out labels such as “plus size,” “petite,” or “rectangle,” it makes it hard to look at yourself and not put on a label of some sort. It’s fortunate that there are influential people now fighting back against this. On Tuesday, Glamour magazine released a special edition which was aimed at women considered “plus size.” The cover of the edition featured the headlines of stories related to fashion ideas
(CC BY-NC-ND 2.0) by eventphotosnyc for “curvy women,” but it also featured a headline that read “Women Who Inspire Us: Melissa McCarthy, Adele, Amy Schumer, & Ashley Graham.” To a normal person, this may be nothing. But this is something. Amy Schumer is a recognized body positive actress, comedian, and writer. However, she is not plus size, and I’m not basing this off of opinion; it’s based off of the fact that Schumer is not plus size, not by America’s definitions. Schumer took to Instagram
and posted the magazine cover. She then wrote under it that she supports plus size women, but those who have this label are a U.S. dress size 16 and up. Schumer then wrote that she is a U.S. dress size 6/8! She’s nowhere close to being considered plus size! She then wrote that Glamour featured her without asking and that she doesn’t want young women looking at her body type and thinking that it’s plus size, most likely for fear that this will add to the pressure young women in
Town plans to use air horns to deal with wild turkey problem “Officials said they’ve received about a dozen complaints — and one police report — from residents reporting aggressive wild turkeys.” TEANECK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey town plans to acquire 20 air horns to help its residents deal with aggressive wild turkeys. Animal Control Officer Vincent Ascolese said he will give the air horns to Teaneck officials to distribute to the public, The Record newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/1q5bkMs ). “We have to coexist as best as possible,” he said. Amy Schweitzer, of the state Department of Environmental Protection’s fish and wildlife division, said she captured an aggressive
male turkey on Tuesday, which she said will help ease the aggression of the wild birds. Officials said they’ve received about a dozen complaints — and one police report — from residents reporting aggressive wild turkeys. The birds have attacked residents, pecked at cars and held up traffic. One has flown through a resident’s glass kitchen window. Town officials said only the state is able to touch the birds, but residents can humanely scare them away
by using water hoses or making loud noises to assert dominance. Schweitzer said that cardboard in windows or window decorations can help keep birds from defecating in yards or attacking windows. The birds’ aggressive behavior tends to decrease in the summer when flocks break up, Schweitzer said. Residents with an immediate issue have been told to call the police.
the U.S. already have when it comes to their body size. She took her Instagram post, put it up on Twitter, and quickly got support from tons of people, who all commended her on calling out how ridiculous these labels are, and that instead the media should put their focus on health, not body or dress sizes. The editor of Glamour, Cindi Leive, quickly took to Twitter to do damage control. She said that the magazine simply recycled their article about Schumer when she was on the cover, but featured her name on the cover because of Schumer’s constant message of body positivity and self-love. The editor also noted that the magazine never called her plus size. I can understand why the editor at Glamour would want to feature her article
in the special edition of the magazine, and I completely agree that nowhere on the magazine cover does it call Schumer plus size. However… the issue here is not who was called what, or what is printed on the cover. It’s about the association made when young girls and women see the name “Amy Schumer” and the label “plus size.” In a way, the magazine cover is setting up future situations where young women will look at someone close to Schumer’s size and immediately think, “plus size,” rather than understanding that that particular body size is actually healthy and normal, or actually getting to know the person. We all have our insecurities. Maybe our skin isn’t silky smooth, maybe our legs feel too short, but why does that matter when it comes to who you are as a person? Do your short legs make your accomplishments invalid? Do your glasses make you less qualified to earn a good grade? The answer is simple: No. I commend Schumer for calling out the magazine for their unapproved use of her name on a magazine that would make you think she’s plus size, but I also commend Glamour magazine. Why? Well, at least they’re trying to feature women who are not the stereotypical supermodel in the U.S. That’s better than not trying at all, and sticking with a system that is clearly corrupt and detrimental to the self-esteem of young girls and women all over the world.

Lottery insider’s brother arrested in jackpot-fixing scandal $1.2 million taken from jackpots in Colorado and Oklahoma. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — New digital evidence reveals how a lottery insider manipulated drawings to enrich himself and his associates, Iowa investigators said Wednesday as they charged his brother with securing jackpots in Oklahoma and Colorado worth $1.2 million cash. Tommy Tipton, a former justice of the peace and reserve police officer in Texas, turned himself in Wednesday to face a charge of ongoing criminal conduct. Authorities allege he conspired with his older brother, Eddie Tipton, the former security director of the MultiState Lottery Association who was convicted last year of fixing a $16.5 million Hot Lotto jackpot. He’s also awaiting trial on charges linking him to lottery prizes in several other states. The jackpot-fixing allegations have rocked the MultiState Lottery Association, an Iowa-based nonprofit that administers Powerball and
Photos Courtesy of The Associated Press This May 9, 2011 file photo provided by the Iowa Lottery shows Larry Dawson and his wife, Kathy, claiming their $9.09 million Hot Lotto jackpot in Des Moines. A group of state lotteries is asking a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Dawson who argues he was shortchanged by millions of dollars because the prior drawing was rigged by one of its employees. The MultiState Lottery Association argued that the Iowa man does not have legal standing to sue because his “claimed injury is merely speculative and hypothetical, and therefore cannot be redressed.”
“The jackpot-fixing allegations have rocked the Multi-State Lottery Association, an Iowa-based nonprofit that administers Powerball and other games for dozens of states.” other games for dozens of states. Prosecutors have alleged Tipton tampered with random number generators that he built and installed for use by state lotteries. But their case had been based on circumstantial evidence because the computers he worked on at the association had been erased or destroyed, and Tipton’s defense repeatedly cited the lack of evidence as a reason why charges should be dismissed. But in what investigators called a significant break, court documents filed Wednesday show Wisconsin authorities were able to recover the random number generator used for a $2 million jackpot Megabucks jackpot paid out to Tipton’s best friend in 2008. A forensic examination found that the generator had unauthorized segments of code that were installed after it had been reviewed and verified as legitimate by a lottery security firm. That code directed the generator not to
produce random numbers on three particular days of the year when they fell on certain days of the week. Instead, numbers on those days would be drawn by a “multi-variable algorithm” that Tipton could predict based on his knowledge of how it worked, according to an affidavit by Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent Don Smith. All six prizes linked to Tipton so far were drawn on either the days of Nov. 23 or Dec. 29 between 2005 and 2011. “Upon re-creating the draws according to the algorithm, forensic examiners produced the very same ‘winning numbers’ from the program that was supposed to produce random numbers,” Smith wrote. Assistant Iowa Attorney General Rob Sand, who has overseen a lengthy investigation into Eddie Tipton, said Wisconsin investigators “are due credit for these welcome developments in electronic evidence.” Eddie Tipton was charged and fired last year after au-
thorities released surveillance footage of a person buying the winning ticket for a $16.5 million jackpot and hot dogs at a Des Moines gas station in 2010. Colleagues identified the buyer as Tipton, a computer whiz who had unparalleled access to lottery software. Tommy Tipton, 51, testified at his brother’s trial, say-
ing the buyer looked nothing like his sibling. Besides, he said, Eddie doesn’t like hot dogs. But months later, Tommy Tipton resigned his elected judicial position in Flatonia, Texas, after his name surfaced in connection with the case. The criminal complaint filed Wednesday says that
Tommy Tipton first came under scrutiny in 2006, when Texas investigators received a tip that the judge had $500,000 in cash. He told investigators he got the money after purchasing a ticket that won a share of a $4.5 million Colorado Lotto jackpot, and recruited a friend to claim the prize because he didn’t want his wife to know about the winnings as they were considering divorce. His friend claimed the $569,000 lump sum cash option, and passed the winnings to Tipton. At the time, investigators didn’t know that Tipton’s brother wrote and installed the program that Colorado Lottery officials used to draw the numbers. In 2011, he purchased numbers that would win a $1.2 million Hot Lotto jackpot while traveling in Oklahoma with a friend, the complaint said. The friend’s relative claimed the $644,000 cash prize, which allegedly went back to Tommy Tipton. He was released on bond Wednesday from the Polk County Jail. His attorney, Randy Schaffer, said he was still reviewing the allegations and didn’t want to address the merits of them. “Until you’ve seen the evidence, it’s foolhardy to stake a position,” he said.

This will be the first time this show has been presented at MNSU. Mitchell Evans, freshman, is one of Mary Poppins many cast members. He can be seen as Neleus, one of the statues that come to life during the show, although Neleus is not his only character on stage. When he is not running around backstage or playing Neleus, he can also be seen as a chimney sweep and one of the toys that come to life, along with a couple other parts that keep him busy throughout the production. He has taken part in theatre activities since he was in the eighth grade. He said The Wizard of Oz was his first show and it got the ball roll-

A look at the top ten Star Trek video games One student celebrates 50 years of the Star Trek franchise.
WES HUNTINGTON Staff Writer In doing the two-month Star Trek feature, I realized there was one thing that I enjoy about the aspect of the franchise as much as watching the episodes and films; there are some good Star Trek video games. So, as a final piece of the puzzle, here are my top ten Star Trek video games in the final article celebrating the 50th anniversary of the franchise. #1: Star Trek 25th Anniversary (1992) This anniversary adventure game set during the time of The Original Series has seven unique episodes, and as you guide Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy through all seven episodes, you solve puzzles and mysteries that end with a gigantic space battle. The CD-ROM version made in 1993 included voice acting from all the cast members of The Original Series and has improved sound effects as well. #2: Star Trek: Judgment Rites (1993) This sequel to 25th Anniversary is different in the fact that the entire game has eight episodes that all tie together through a singular plot. In Judgment Rites, the Brassica, an alien species from outside known space, are conducting a test. The test involves the

The test must be passed to their abilities or else the Brassica could decide the fate of both the Federation and the Klingon Empire for years to come. #3: Star Trek: Starfleet Command (1999) This naval-combat simulator game was so popular that it spawned two sequels and an expansion. The overall plot is that the Organians have disappeared and it is the player’s job to find them and bring peace back to known space. The first two games and the expansion focused on The Original Series movie era, while the third title focused on The Next Generation era. #4: Star Trek Armada
(2000) Activision’s first foray into the Star Trek universe occurred with this highly popular real-time strategy game set in The Next Generation era and features voice acting from several popular cast and guest cast members from the era. In Armada, the Borg are back and start to wreak havoc on the Federation, commanded by Picard’s alter ego Locutus, both played by Patrick Stewart. However, the main wrinkle is that a future starship, from a timeline where the Borg has overrun the Federation, has arrived to warn them of the invasion. #5: Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (2000) One of the things that Activision did was create a very popular first-person shooter, this time during the Star Trek:
with the rest of any cast. Evans said he loves to get the support of his peers because it is similar to supporting one of the MNSU sports teams. It also gives students something to do, and with Mary Poppins it gives them the opportunity to see such a big name from childhood put into a different light and perspective. “Nothing beats a live performance,” Evans said. Mary Poppins taught Evans that there is always room to grow and learn in the theatre program, no matter what the level of education and experience may be. He said he has really learned how to multitask with dancing and singing from being

productions as possible so he can gain experience and earn the credits needed to graduate. So far, Evans has been able to take part in every show he has auditioned for at MNSU. “I’ve been very fortunate here at Mankato with casting,” Evans said. The shows he has been cast in so far include Mary Poppins, Antigone, Titanic, and A Christmas Story the Musical. Within all of the shows Evans has been cast in, he said it is not hard to get along with the cast mates. Since they spend time together in rehearsals and share many of the same classes, it is easy to make friends and become close
Voyager television series. In Voyager Elite Force, Voyager comes across a probe and after they destroy it they find themselves transported to a starship graveyard by a device called The Forge, controlled by an alien species called the Vorsoth. You, as Alexander (or Alexandria, if you prefer to play as female) are a part of a Hazard Team, a group of security officers aboard the starship who deal with these kinds of situations. Almost the entire Voyager cast reprises their roles from the television series. Sadly, Jeri Ryan wasn’t available, but she was able to reprise the Seven of Nine role for an expansion pack that was released a year later. #6: Star Trek Armada II (2001) The sequel to Star Trek
Armada came out about a year later, and included new starships, new maps, and new alien races for you to play as in multiplayer and instant-action modes. In Armada II, set six months after the original, the Borg once again make their mark on Federation territory by using a new weapon capable of assimilating an entire planet’s population in minutes. Captain Picard decides to eliminate the Borg threat once and for all. This time around, Picard, Chancellor Martok, and the Borg Queen are all played by their respective actors from the show. #7: Star Trek: Starfleet Command III (2003) Starfleet Command III is one of the last titles Activision ever released based upon the franchise before their long-drawn-out and highly publicized lawsuit with Viacom, who at the time still owned all of the rights to the entire Star Trek franchise. In Starfleet Command III, a new starbase has been constructed by both the Federation and the Klingon Empire called Unity One; the base is capable of detecting cloaked ships far into the Neutral Zone. The Romulan Empire clearly sees this as a threat and launches attacks from within to disrupt the peace in the Alpha Quadrant. #8: Star Trek Elite Force II (2003) Elite Force II is the absolute last title before the Activ-

Overall, he said being in theatre has really taught him how to prioritize and how to stay positive. “At the end of the day, you have to see the light of things with doing what you love with great people,” Evans said with a smile. Hungary talent show for young artists going global Creators of “Virtuoso” sign licensing deal with Dick Clark Productions. BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The latest hot new television creation: A Hungarian talent show for young classical musicians that is on the verge of being replicated around the world. The creators of “Virtuosos” have signed a deal with Dick Clark Productions, the company behind the American Music Awards, to license the format of the successful Hungarian program internationally. Dick Clark Productions said there’s interest in the show from China and Japan and the company is working on a deal with U.S. networks. “We believe we may have a U.S. launch simultaneously with one of the other territories,” DCP executive Mark Rafalowski told The Associated Press. “There are very few things outside of sports that can attract a multi-generational audience. Youth competitions done right, especially music, are one of those things.” Mariann Peller, creator

young classical musicians the chance to compete in a type of program usually reserved for pop music. In Hungary, the first season of “Virtuosos” was a huge hit for state television in 2014. Recording is underway for its second season — nine episodes lasting an average of 90 minutes, including a gala event. The 81 participants in the initial rounds came from over 2,200 musicians in three age groups. In the first round, instrumentalists and singers perform solo or with minimal accompaniment. Semifinalists are backed by a chamber ensemble and this season’s finalists in each age group — those attending elementary school, high school or music universities — will have access to Hungary’s National

November of this year. With all of this work, and more to come, it’s understandable why fans of Sherlock usually wait nearly two years before they get another three weeks of the detective and his doctor. Mark Gatiss, writer, executive producer, and co-creator of the show, announced in a video posted to the show’s Twitter page that they have begun filming, and in his video he holds a slate that shows Rachel Talalay will direct the season
premiere. Talalay directed the most recent Doctor Who season finale, another popular BBC show that Gatiss has a hand in. She will be the first female director of an episode of Sherlock. This season is sure to rock the world of Holmes and Watson, since [spoiler alert!] Moriarty returned at the end of season three, even though millions of fans watched him die by gunshot in the season two finale. How is he alive? How did Sherlock miss something so crucial?
Is this a result of hallucinations brought on by Sherlock’s drug addiction, which became a crucial piece of the puzzle in the Christmas special? Only time, and an eventual season premiere, can answer those questions. For now, fans will have to be content with conspiracy theories and re-watching episodes over and over (personally, I haven’t even tried to guess how Moriarty survived because I know once you start you can’t stop).
Philharmonic Orchestra. Peller said Hungary’s deep musical traditions — Budapest’s international airport is named after famed composer and piano virtuoso Ferenc (Franz) Liszt — offered a wide talent pool for the program. She said applications to music schools in Hungary increased 14 percent last year, attributing it to the show’s popularity. “Virtuosos” has also set up a foundation to assist the careers of the participants, not just the finalists, helping the musicians buy instruments and organizing some 300
concerts for them from New York to Tokyo. “’Virtuosos’ is different from other talent shows in that we have a mission,” Peller said. “We made it an objective not to let go of the children’s hands but to continue and build their careers.” Future editions of the program aim to discover talents in jazz, world music, conducting and film score composition, among other categories. The program has already expanded its scope, including performers with Hungarian roots from outside the country in the second season. Musicians from neighboring countries like Romania and Slovakia, which have large ethnic Hungarian communities, and even from farther locations like Belgium and China, appeared in the initial rounds. With Hungarian television now dominated by game shows, reality shows and talent contests licensed from foreign productions, Peller was proud that “Virtuosos” was going global. “It is a great joy for us that a Hungarian format can finally set foot abroad,” Peller said. “I am very happy to put this talent show format in the hands of professionals who will make a worldwide show out of it.”

Janet Jackson delays tour; planning family, ordered to rest Pop star thanks fans, says tour will resume May 14 in Las Vegas. Janet Jackson is delaying her “Unbreakable” tour, saying Wednesday that she and her husband are planning their family and that she is under doctor’s orders to rest. The 49-year-old singer announced in a clip on her Twitter account Wednesday morning that there has been a “sudden change” to the second leg of her tour, which started in August. She didn’t say she was pregnant with her first child, only that she needed to rest up. The youngest child of the Jackson family, she turns 50 in May. “We’re in the second leg of the tour, and there actually has been a sudden change,” a smiling Jackson said. “I thought it was important that you be the first to know. “My husband and I are planning our family, so I’m going to have to delay the tour. At that time, Jackson’s statement asked for prayers of support and said no further details on her medical condition would be disclosed. Two weeks later, Jackson
announced rescheduled tour dates after she took some time to recover from the surgical procedure. The singer again offered no details on her medical condition, but denied viral rumors that she had cancer. Jackson said at the time the North American leg of her “Unbreakable” tour would resume May 14 in Las Vegas. Rescheduled shows were also to include dates in Portland, Oregon; Houston; Detroit; Atlanta; Washington; New York; Philadelphia and more. Live Nation had said tickets for previously announced dates would be honored at rescheduled shows. Jackson began her “Unbreakable” tour last August and it soon made the Top 20 global concert tour listing compiled by Pollstar. The singer’s catalog of hits dates back to the mid-1980s, ranging from “What Have You Done for Me Lately” to “That’s the Way Love Goes” and “All for You.”

Sports Maverick tennis splits over weekend
KELCIE RICHMOND Staff Writer The Minnesota State Maverick tennis team split two duals on the road this past weekend. Saturday, the Purple and Gold took on St. Cloud State University but fell 6-3. However, the Mavs bounced back Sunday afternoon when they defeated the University of Minnesota, Duluth 7-2. Both duals were played in Duluth. The Mavericks struggled in the doubles matches early on against the SCSU Huskies. St. Cloud took two out of the three doubles matches with MNSU’s junior Melissa Mashburn and freshman Erin Streeter defeated the Huskies’ Marilia Roque Diversi and Abigail Kantor 8-6. Next came the single matches against the Huskies, where the Mavericks also struggled to take the lead. Out of the six single matches, the Purple and Gold were only able to capture two victories. Streeter won her match 7-6 and 6-2 and MNSU sophomore Killian Doran came back to win her match
0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). Sunday the Mavericks were looking to bounce back against the UMD Bulldogs. They completed the day with a 7-2 win. Mashburn and Streeter succeeded for the second time over the weekend, winning their doubles match against Drew DeCorsey and Kelsey Zetah 8-4. Then, Doran and Maverick senior Sarah McCann recorded an 8-3 win over Shelby Benkofske and Jillian Klasen. The Mavericks also won five out of six of the singles matches against the Bulldogs. Streeter dominated a 6-0, 6-0 win over DeCorsey, Doran posted a 6-0, 6-1 win, McCann won 6-2, 6-4 and sophomore Lisa Dobbleaere tallied a 6-1, 6-0 win. The last singles match victory of the day went to junior Abby Schmidt, who fought hard to win 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) over UMD’s Rachel Menke. This season there are several Mavericks playing fantastic tennis. Doran has a winning singles-match record of 10-5, as does Streeter. Schmidt and McCann are both 4-9, while Dobbleaere holds a steady 6-9 record. For doubles, McCann and Streeter are 1-1, Dobbleaere and Doran are 1-1, Doran and McCann are 3-8, Mashburn and Streeter are 9-4 and

Villanova crowned NCAA Champions Kris Jenkins buzzer-beater lifted the Wildcats to a victory over North Carolina in men’s basketball final. HOUSTON (AP) — Kris Jenkins is one of those players who believes every shot is going in. Sometimes, it feels so right to be right. The Villanova junior answered a double-clutch, game-tying 3-pointer by North Carolina’s Marcus Paige with a buzzer-beating 3 of his own Monday night to lift the Wildcats to a 7774 victory and the national championship. One good shot deserved another. And Jenkins wasn’t about to be outdone. “I think every shot’s going in,” he said, “and this one was no different.” The shot came on a play Villanova works on every day in practice: Jenkins inbounds the ball to Ryan Arcidiacono, he works it up court and forward Daniel Ochefu sets a pick near halfcourt to clutter things up, then Arcidiacono creates. This time, the senior point guard made an underhanded flip to Jenkins, who spotted up a pace or two behind the arc and swished it with Carolina’s Isaiah Hicks running at him. Or, as Jenkins put it: “One, two step, shoot ‘em up, sleep in the streets.” Jenkins had to come up big after Paige collected a pass on the top right side of the arc and, with Arcidiacono running at him, double clutched and pumped it in to tie the game at 74 with 4.7 seconds left. It completed a Carolina comeback from six points down with 1:52 left. Coach Jay Wright called timeout and called the play the Wildcats (33-5) have worked on all season. “I didn’t have to say anything in the huddle,” he said. “We have a name for it, that’s what we’re going to do. Just put everybody in their spots.” He knew the shot was going in, too. “Bang,” Wright said as he watched it fall, then calmly walked to shake Carolina coach Roy Williams’ hand. Confetti flew. The refs looked at the replay to make sure the shot got off in time. It did. The points went up on the scoreboard. Celebration on. Jenkins finished with 14 points — the last three as memorable as any that have been scored in the history of this tournament.
Photo Courtesy of The Associated Press Villanova celebrates after Jenkins’ jumper that landed the Wildcats the championship. After being thrown to the floor by his teammates, Jenkins got up, leaped over press row, hugged his birth mom — a college basketball coach who helped him hone his shot — and shouted, “They said we couldn’t, they said we couldn’t, they said we couldn’t.” Oh yes, they could. This adds to the title Villanova won in 1985, when Rollie Massimino, who was on hand Monday night, coaxed a miracle out of his eighth-seeded underdogs for a victory over star-studded Georgetown. Hard to top this one, though. Jenkins, who was adopted by the family of North Carolina guard Nate Britt when his mother moved to take a coaching job, now has a spot alongside — and probably above — Keith Smart, Lorenzo Charles, Christian Laettner and everyone else who ever made a late game-winner to win a big one in March Madness. Paige finished with 21 and Joel Berry II had 20 for the Heels (33-7), the only No. 1 seed to make the Final Four. They came one agonizing shot short of giving Williams his third national title. Not surprisingly, the tears flowed from the 65-year-old coach who, some speculate, could have worked his last game on the sideline; the entire sports program at Chap-
el Hill is under NCAA scrutiny and awaiting possible penalties for a long-running academic-fraud case. “I’m not very good because I can’t take away the hurt,” Williams said. “I told them I loved them. I told them I wish I could have helped them more.” His thought when he saw the last shot fly: “It was helpless. It was not a good feeling.” Even MJ felt the pain. In the stands with the thousands of Carolina Blue-wearing fans, Michael Jordan simply nodded, smiled, looked at his buddy Ahmad Rashad and said, “Good shot, good

shot.” High praise from the Great One. And what a night for Villanova — a second-seeded team full of scrappers, grinders and also-rans, who proved you don’t have to have a roster full of NBAbound one-and-doners to win a title. More people in the ESPN bracket contest picked ‘Nova to lose to a No. 15 seed in the first round than to win the whole thing. This
team flamed out early in the last two tournaments despite big expectations. Not this time. Before Jenkins did his thing, it was unheralded sophomore Phil Booth — who isn’t unheralded on that Villanova squad? — pouring in a career high 20 points to give the Cats their late sixpoint lead. Booth forced a turnaround jumper with the shot-clock blaring to give ‘Nova a 69-64 lead at the 3:03 mark. With 1:52 left, a free throw from Josh Hart pushed the lead to six. But Carolina never quits. Paige sandwiched a 3-pointer and a putback around a bucket from Brice Johnson (14 points, eight rebounds) to help the Tar Heels stay within striking range. Then, he took a bounce pass, scooted by the diving Ochefu, twisted past Arcidiacono and hit his double-clutch. Carolina fans went wild, and it looked like overtime. Only, it wasn’t. “If I could get a shot, I was going to shoot it,” said Arcidiacono, who finished with 16 points and two assists, one more memorable than the other. “But I heard someone screaming in the back of my head. It was Kris. I just gave it to him and he let it go with confidence.”

Can the Warriors make history? The Warriors must win all of their remaining game to beat the 95-96 Bulls record of 72 wins.
TOMMY WIITA Staff Writer It has been the heavily repeated question throughout this 2015-2016 NBA season: can the Golden State Warriors break the single-season record in which the 19951996 Chicago Bulls currently hold at 72-10? The Minnesota Timberwolves may have complicated things going forward, as they defeated the Warriors in overtime at the Oracle Arena 124-117 last Tuesday night. That marked only the second time this season the Warriors have lost a game at home, and are now 1-2 in their last three games. With four games remaining, they will need to win out to go 73-9 to break the all-time record. The four remaining games they have left will feature two playoff teams in the San An-

The Spurs will travel to Oakland on April 7 for the Warriors’ next game, followed by a two-game roadtrip to Memphis on April 9 and San Antonio on April 10. Golden State will play their final game on April 13, as they play host to the Grizzlies.

Miraculously, the Warriors are yet to clinch the best record in the Western Conference as the Spurs have been hanging around with an impressive 65-12 record, along with an undefeated home record of 39-0. It is highly unlikely the Warriors will lose the rest of their remaining games, barring a tumultuous meltdown. The Spurs will be the toughest match-up without a doubt, especially if head coach Gregg Popovich decides to not rest his players the rest of the way. Point guard Tony Parker was first led to believe Popovich would rest most of the starters beginning with the Utah Jazz on Monday, but instead Pop utilized the entire roster in San Antonio’s 88-86 win. It would only make sense to play everyone at this point, as the Warriors are on the cusp of losing out on their chances for history. It is unlikely for the Spurs to play everyone when there really is no reason to, but in a time like this, it looks like San Antonio is going to give Golden State all they can handle. The Spurs match-ups will be the ones to watch, but the Grizzlies should not be overlooked. Memphis currently holds the fifth spot in the Western Conference with a 42-36 record, and they will not be able to move up in the standings with the lack of games remaining. Even with that being the case, it should be interesting to see if the Grizzlies will rest their players. The Warriors cannot overlook teams, as they found out
the hard way against Minnesota. With all the preparation they will need for San Antonio, it may become a factor when they face Memphis of being less prepared. With the Spurs garnering most of the attention because of their
historically great season, the Grizzlies will be the team that could surprise if the Spurs don’t do it first. Of course, this is the Golden State Warriors we are talking about. Forward Draymond Green told CBS Sports the team is ‘exhausted’ and ‘ready for the regular season to be over.’ It is quite imaginable how long of a season it must feel like for a team trying to win at least 89 percent of their games, as the pressure has continually built up throughout the year. What will be left to answer are a few questions: if the Warriors do break the record, will they have enough in the tank to win another NBA championship? If they don’t break the record, will it inspire them or show the rest of the NBA they are gassed out? Better rested teams could be a problem for the Warriors in the playoffs, but this is history in the current moment in front us and it is still possible for them to make it happen.

UCONN wins fourth consecutive NCAA women’s championship INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Breanna Stewart and UConn stand alone. Geno Auriemma, too, after another flawless season by the dominating Huskies. UConn won an unprecedented fourth straight national championship Tuesday night, capping another perfect season by routing Syracuse 82-51. Until now, only the UCLA men’s team had won four in a row in Division I, rolling to seven consecutive championships under John Wooden from 1967-73. With Tuesday’s victory, Auriemma passed the Wizard of Westwood with his 11th national title. Peerless again. Perfect again. “What those 11 championships mean to me is how many great players I’ve had the opportunity to coach,” Auriemma said. “How many great people have come through the program. It doesn’t matter whose name is above, or whose name I’m under. As long as I have those players in my memory, I’m good.” Stewart said when she came to campus four years ago that she wanted to win four titles. She delivered on that promise by scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the final game of her brilliant college career. “It’s unbelievable,” Stewart said. “That was our goal coming in here once we were freshman and to carry it out and win like this as seniors is unbelievable.”
Photo Courtesy of The Associated Press Stewart and her fellow seniors Morgan Tuck and Moriah Jefferson posed on the ladder after cutting down the net for the final time. Mission accomplished. “It wasn’t a sense of relief, it was a sense of success. This is exactly what we wanted,” Stewart said. “Going into every one of our national championship runs, we were confident and that’s what we were tonight, confident. We made history and to be able to say that we did that with those two guys, we’re going to remember that forever.” The Huskies (38-0) have been nearly unbeatable since Stewart arrived. They lost four games her freshman year and only one since. The win over Syracuse was the 75th straight for UConn, all by
double figures. Stewart and her fellow seniors went 24-0 in NCAA tourney games, too. Stewart earned the most outstanding player of the Final Four all four years of her career. No other women’s player has won it more than twice and only Lew Alcindor did it three times on the men’s side. The three-time AP Player of the Year has said it is up to others to decide her place in women’s college basketball lore. There is no denying she is the most accomplished player ever, winning more titles than fellow UConn greats Diana Taurasi and Maya Moore, who watched from the stands at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. ‘I’ll say this. She’s the greatest NCAA Tournament play-

er I’ve ever been around,” Auriemma said. “When the lights were the brightest, that’s (when) she was at her best.” Like the other great UConn teams, this version had a killer instinct. The Huskies scored the first nine points of the game. Stewart had 10 points in the first 6 minutes as UConn built a 23-6 lead. When the Orange made a little run to cut its deficit to 25-13, Jefferson hit a 3-pointer just before the first-quarter buzzer. Stewart, Jefferson and Tuck, who have helped the Huskies to an NCAA-record 151 wins over their four years, combined for 26 of the 28 points in the period. They also handled the Orange’s press with precision passing that led to easy layups. The Huskies were up 50-23 at the half and extended the lead to 33 early in third quarter before Syracuse scored 16 straight points to get within 60-43 with 2:02 left in the period that brought the Orange fans to their feet. Consecutive layups by Napheesa Collier restored the 20-plus point lead and UConn cruised from there. “Not shocked by how good they are, not shocked by the things they did in the game. We were definitely prepared for it,” Syracuse coach Quentin Hillsman said. “One of the things I told our
kids is you have no reason to be scared when you’re prepared and we competed. We didn’t play scared.” Stewart, Tuck and Jefferson left the game for good with 1:46 left. They shared an embrace together before hugging Auriemma. The trio then went down the bench hugging every member of the team. “There’s three key ingredients that go into this kind of success, ‘One, two, three,’” Auriemma said afterward, pointing to his three seniors. Auriemma has never lost in 11 title appearances. While the names may change, the results are always the same: UConn is still there holding that trophy in the end. This one gave the Hall of Fame coach a sixth undefeated season. To win her fourth championship, Stewart had to beat her hometown team. Fourth-seeded Syracuse (308) had the best season in school history, advancing to its first NCAA championship game. They hadn’t made it out of the first weekend of the tournament until this year. “I’m really happy for Breanna Stewart, who came to one of my camps. She’s a great player,” Hillsman said. “When you have a player that great coming from Syracuse, that doesn’t happen that often.”
