Key for Scarlets is to close out close games KYLE RATKE

sports editor After a fantastic 2008 season, Mankato West wasn't too shabby in 2009 either. The Scarlets finished 17-9 overall and 12-4 in Big Nine Conference play. The Scarlets had 13 players on last year's squad including Jack Mages, Preston Brunz, Phil Nelson, JB Schlichte, Nick Kaus, Brian Kurtz, Des Spann, Mac Guhlke, Jonny Paulsen, Nick Kriendbring, Ethan Tramp, Matt Wills and Matt Briggs. As practice hasn't started just yet, West doesn't know exactly what to expect for the 2010 season. Head coach Tom Boone hopes for the same success over the last few years by playing fundamental basketball and maybe having a few players step up and claim their star roles. The Scarlets swept Mankat East, their crosstown rival, last season by scores of 47-41 and 53-36. The longest winning streak was five, beating each opponent by over 10 points. Of Mankato's nine losses, five were within five points or less. With a little bit of luck, the Scarlets could have been looking at a 22-4 record and possibly a run in the state tournament. The Scarlets will try to bring a winning attitude into this season. An attitude they are very familiar with.

MANKATO WEST HOCKEY
Both West teams have high hopes for 2010-11 season PAT DELANEY
staff writer High school hockey in Southern Minnesota has long been an afterthought, but with the way the Mankato West girl’s hockey team has emerged, they no longer can be overlooked. Under head coach Cara Samuelson, the Scarlet’s have become a consistently good team who is looking to build on a very successful 2009-2010 campaign. The Scarlet’s finished 17-9-0 last season and they appear to have enough pieces to build on the success of last season. They will be returning their two top scorers from last season, Callie Looft and Katy Kvasknicka. Kvasknicka put up 24 points last season in what was a break-out season for the senior forward. Looft’s numbers were out of this world as she put up 64 points. Only a freshman, the forward has the potential to be one of the best forwards in the state for years to come, something that will make the Scarlets’s not only good this season, but for the future as well. The boy’s team didn’t have the same success as the girl’s finishing 11-13-1. That hasn’t stopped head coach Curtis Doell from having optimism from his group this season. “We have a solid group of

forwards as well as some good returning players,” said Doell. “Our biggest thing is to stay consistent and do the little things right. If we do that we’ll be fine.” The Scarlet’s consistently play tough opponents in a Big Nine conference that is full of tough teams. Last season, four teams finished with winning records including RochesterCentury who finished 18-8-0 and Faribault who finished 20-7-0
and won the conference. Despite the strong opponents, the Scarlet’s have some solid returning players. Drew Weber and Nate Olsen are both talented players who have a lot of experience and will be counted on to step up and produce this season. Goaltending should also be strong with senior Jake Kaufman between the pipes. Doell hopes that a strong senior season is ahead for Kaufman. “You need goaltending at
any level,” said Kaufman. “But when you have young players it is really important to have a good goalie with experience. I think Jake does a good job and hopefully that will continue, especially in his senior season.” Doell praised the athleticism of his team which often goes unnoticed. Many of the Scarlet’s players are not even focusing on hockey yet as they are still on the football field trying to lead Mankato West to a possible state

championship. Whatever happens on the football field, the Scarlet’s soon will be lacing up their skates and preparing to become more than an afterthought, but a real contender. “We want to grow each and every day,” said Doell. “Once you get to the final push we should be playing our best hockey. That’s our job as a coaching staff to prepare them for that.”

MANKATO WEST GIRL'S BASKETBALL
Scarlets bringing back key weapons from last season LEE HANDEL
staff writer Despite a trying season last year, the Mankato West girl’s basketball team returns practically its whole roster from last season and is ready to take the next step forward and compete in the Big Nine Conference in 2010-11. The Scarlets struggled mightily last season, posting a 6-19 overall record while going 6-10 in the Big Nine. They did challenge themselves with a very tough non-conference schedule, and it showed with a respectable record in conference play. This year’s Scarlets’ roster is very experienced, as it is made up of nine seniors who all gained a wealth of knowledge last season and are ready to lead the team to a winning record in the Big Nine Conference this season. West lost only one player to graduation last year, which should give head coach Dianne Johns a great opportunity to pick right up where the team left off last season. The Scarlets are right on the cusp of success heading into this season, as they played many close games in conference play last season that could have went either way. This included splitting with Mankato East, Rochester Century, Rochester John Marshall and Winona. The Scarlets beat each

team once and fell to each team once in some very close contests. The biggest victory for the Scarlets last season came in January against Mankato East, as the Scarlets won a thriller 66-65. The big rivalry with East should continue to be intense this season, as the Scarlets will be looking to take both games this time around. Although Owatonna won the
conference last year, the Big Nine doesn’t have an overwhelming favorite this season and always seems to have a lot of parity. The Scarlets finished seventh in the Big Nine last year, but should be able to finish in the upper half of the conference standings this season with all of their experience. The veteran Scarlets roster is very balanced, with many play-
ers who should contribute this season. The team lacks size, but is full of athletic guards and forwards who have played numerous sports during their time at West. The guards to watch are Jessica Makela, Emmalei Huber, Bryanna Sowers, Morgan Klaustermeier, Clarissa Ahlquist and Dani Sukalski. The team’s post players consist of Shelby Murry, Brianna

Christiansen and Emily Doyle. Sophomore Cara Christiansen should also contribute this year. West has a talented group of seniors that should end their careers with a better season than last year. If they can use their talent to make up for their lack of size, the Scarlets could be near the top of the Big Nine when all is said and done.

EAST BOY'S BASKETBALL
The Cougars are trying to catch crosstown rivals TIGE HUTCHESON
staff writer For the last few years, Mankato West has been the city’s premier basketball school, especially in men’s basketball. Last year, for example, four Scarlets represented the city of Mankato in the MaxPreps All-Big Nine Conference Team, and that’s not even counting one Honorable Mention or Tom Boone’s Coach of the Year nomination. About three miles away from Mankato West is the city’s “other” high school, Mankato East. Unlike the Scarlets, it has been a while since the Cougars have seen much success in men’s basketball. The lone Cougar to be recognized in the MaxPreps All-Big Nine Conference Team in 2009-2010 was current Bethany Lutheran College center Sami Onsomu, listed as an honorable mention. East’s 8-7 conference, 15-12 overall record was better than average, and at the end of the season the Cougars were sitting in fourth place out of the ten teams in the Big Nine, only one spot behind their third-ranked, cross-town rivals. But let’s not focus on the East vs. West rivalry. “We’d drive ourselves crazy
trying to catch up to them” said Mankato East head coach Joe Madson. To Madson, there are more important things to focus on. This year’s focus will be on continuing their growth as a team. “It’s a focus for us to improve. We improved a lot last year from the year before,” said Madson “We have a young group; a lot of juniors will be playing. I see us improving and having a fun year.” The Cougars will look to junior co-captain Brody Ziegler, the lone starter returning from last year, to lead the charge. East will look for Ziegler to step up and improve upon his 7.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game from last year as a sophomore. Madson also plans to ask for quick improvement from two of last year’s top bench players, senior co-captains Brandon Sedivy and Martin Fredrick. Fredrick will be asked to change roles from an off-the-bench spark plug to a consistent leader as the new Mankato East starting point guard. “Last year we were more of a half court, ‘get it inside team’. This year we definitely
Mankato East finished last year with an 8-7 Big 9 record and a 15-12 overall record.
want to push it a little more. We’ll be more athletic even though we’ve lost a little of our length,” said Coach Madson “Our makeup has changed a little bit, so our style is going to change a little too. “ But for the Cougars, change and maturity will need to happen pretty quickly. Conference foe Owatonna is returning an experienced nucleus from last season and looks to be the
odds-on-favorite with last season’s Big Nine champs, Winona, not far behind, but Coach Madson expects the Big Nine to be a little less predictable this year that it has been in the past. ““It should be a pretty fun league. I don’t see anyone going undefeated like Winona did last year,” said Madson “Every year in the past we’ve kind of had a clear-cut favorite, but this year is a tossup.”
photo from Sport Pix
As with any youth movement, Coach Madson doesn’t expect immediate success. But the young Cougars are set to begin their transformation from the middle-of-the-pack team of the past few years into a more gritty, more intimidating team that could be a real force once things start to click.

LOYALA BOY'S BASKETBALL
Crusaders look to new leader for motivation in '10 DREW CLAUSSEN
staff writer Returning three starters and featuring a new coach the Mankato Loyola Boy’s Basketball team will look to improve on their 14-12 record from last year. Tim Anderson will replace John Landkamer who had been coach since 2004 as the headman for the Crusaders. Landkamer resigned over the summer to take the job as head coach for the Loyola Boy’s Baseball team, a position that he was at before he switched to coaching basketball. Anderson is no stranger to being a head coach having been the head boy’s basketball coach at Maple River High School for 14 years. During his time as the boy’s coach at Maple River Anderson compiled a 272-93 record with 10 Valley Conference championships and three state tournament appearances. Most recently he was the head coach of the Maple River girl’s team last year leading them to a 19-5 record. To go along with their three returning starters the Crusaders will feature many players that have varsity experience. The team will look to compen-
sate for their lack of height by using their speed and playing solid defense. “We will be a short quick team that will like to play tough man to man defense and go up-tempo on offense,” Anderson said. The team’s 14-12 record placed them fourth in the nine-team Gopher Conference in 2009. This year 2009-2010 champion Waterville-ElysianMorristown and United South Central are expected to once again contend for the conference crown. “W-E-M will be by far the favorites in the Gopher Conference. USC will be the next best team with the rest of the teams battling it out for the other top spots,” Anderson said. The next chapter in Anderson’s coaching career should be interesting as he tries to bring the Crusaders up to the level that his teams were at Maple River. “I am looking forward to an exciting season with some great kids to work with,” Anderson said. “I am sure we will be better at the end of the season than we are at the start.”

the game, and will have to if they have any chance against conference powerhouses such as Owatonna, Rochester Mayo and Rochester Century. Two players to watch this season are senior Kelsey Mosher and sophomore Abby Connell. These players will be key to help the team improve from its 5-11 conference play. The Cougars earned their wins against Mankato West, Faribault, John Marshall, Austin and Albert Lea. East split the crosstown
rivalry match-up between West. They beat West 57-54 in their first match-up, but lost a nail biter, 65-66 during their second match-up. The team started January with a three-game winstreak, but then struggles, as it lost 10 straight games before beating Albert Lea in mid-February. Five of Mankato's losses were by five points or less. If those games were switched around, the Cougars would've been looking at an 11-14 record.

staff writer It is too early for coaches to hold practices yet but that hasn’t kept the players of the Valley conference off the basketball court. Whether it’s the men or the women, players are working hard to get themselves ready for another season. On the women’s side, players are getting anxious for what should be another intense season. If you walk into the gym at Martin Luther, you will notice the gym floors are already heating up, even at 6 a.m. “The girls are coming in before school holding captains practice and working hard,” said Martin Luther head coach Jodi Geistfeld. “It’s amazing how well these girls get along on and off the court, including the younger players. They all are great friends and want to be successful.” The Knights are defending conference-tournament champions and hope to build upon that success this season. The Knights have experience which may make them the early favorites to win the conference. Don’t count out the other members of the Valley though. Lake Crystal Wellcome-Memorial is always a tough team as well as Nicollet and Maple River. There are also teams like Cleveland and Alden-Conger who have shown signs that they can jump up and surprise people. “I think the conference is going to be very strong,” said Geistfeld. “We want to be able
to come out and play our top game every night.” It can be challenging to hang up the football equipment and get right back into to basketball mode but that is what many of the boys of the Valley conference are forced to begin focusing on. With little time to prepare for the upcoming season, the preparations are in high gear. Like the women, the boys are also finding themselves on the court trying to get into game shape with a season that is lurking up. There is no one favorite this year in the conference with many teams having a balance of experience and newcomers ready to establish themselves. Maple River coach Chad Ostermann is excited to see what his team has in store against the rest of the conference. The Eagles bring back some experience as well as have some promising players who were either playing junior
varsity or B-squad last season. “It’s hard to really pick one favorite,” said Maple River head coach Chad Ostermann. “It is hard to tell what kids are coming up from B-squad on some teams and who is going to step in. I would say that if we play well we will have a good opportunity to be successful.” Along with Maple River, teams like Le Center and Madelia are trying to take a step in the positive direction and possibly surprise some teams when the regular season gets underway. It will be the team that sees the steadiest improvement and can have the best chemistry towards the end of the year that will likely find themselves on top. “If you don’t play well anyone can come up and beat you,” said Ostermann. “You have to always be ready to play.”

EAST HOCKEY
Cougars hope to win in Big Nine conference play LEE HANDEL
staff writer After a trying season last year, things aren’t going to get any easier for the Mankato East men’s hockey squad in 2010-11. That being said, the Cougars have some young talent who figure to get their feet wet this season with better things to come in the future. The Cougars are coming off a 10-14 campaign overall, with an 0-9 mark in the extremely competitive Big Nine Conference. Although they lost to every team in the conference and finished in last place, the Cougars played quality hockey in the majority of those contests. This year’s squad looks a lot different than last year’s, however, as the team’s top three scorers from last season are all gone. Taylor Ries, Dan Billiar, and Ryan Willaert combined for nearly 150 of the team’s points last season and have since graduated. The trio, along with 13 other key players, were lost to graduation for East. This creates a huge question mark heading into this season when it comes to who is going to pick up the scoring slack for the Cougars. The strength of the Cougars this year figures to be their goaltending, as Lucas Weihe and Dylan Meyer both return after logging most of the minutes in net last season. They should also be alright defensively, as head coach Aaron Anderson has high hopes for the blue-liners.
“We should be alright on the defensive end as long as we play as a cohesive unit,” said Anderson. “If everybody does their own job on defense, hopefully we can put as many pucks on net as we can on offense and be able to win some games.” Although the Cougars will have their fair share of rough patches this season with only three seniors on the roster, the schedule starts out fairly easy. This should give the younger players a chance to get used to logging heavy minutes before the conference schedule gets very difficult. Anderson also hopes the team can stay healthy, as the team won’t have too much depth this year. Anderson pointed out four forwards who could step up on offense this season, as well as in years to come for the Cougars. Juniors Ben Neyers and Jordan Wenzel could be leaders on offense this year, as well as up-and-coming sophomores Carter Johnson and Brent Adams. The Big Nine is stacked once again, with defending conference champ Faribault, Rochester Century, Albert Lea, Owatonna and rival Mankato West all expected to contend in 2010-11. Although East may have a hard time beating those squads, coach Anderson thinks that they can beat some of the lesser teams in the conference if they play well. “We have a lot of hardworking and nice kids,” Anderson said.

GOPHER CONFERENCE BASKETBALL
Many teams in Gopher Conference start fresh TIGE HUTCHESON
staff writer
The 2009-2010 saw boy’s teams across the board in the Gopher Conference showing off finished products with senior-heavy starting rotations. But with that memorable senior class out of the picture, fans of the Gopher Conference still have a lot to look forward to in 2010-2011, as teams prepare for a youth movement consisting of some pretty intriguing players. On the boy’s side, United South Central brings back an interesting blend experience and potential, including key returnees Riley Swearingten and Kyle Bauman. Swearington was named to MaxPreps All-Gopher Conference
Basketball Team, and Bauman’s impressive freshman season garnered an Honorable Mention. With another year of maturity under their belts, United South Central seems ready to contend in the Gopher Conference. Last year’s Gopher Conference champions, Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, should also be taken very seriously as they look to defend their title. Despite losing key seniors Chris Kaplan, Kyle Thelemann, and Bruch Quiram, the Buccaneers should remain one of the conference’s elite teams behind senior leader Tyler Dillion and sophomore sensation Grant Pope. United South Central and Waterville-Elysian-
Morristown won’t have an easy road to the conference title though, as the Gopher Conference should be on the verge of one of its most competitive years in conference history. Among the threats are Bethlehem Academy and New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva, who are led by two of the best seniors in the class of 2011, Jordan Clark of Bethlehem Academy and Tyler Firme of NRHEG. On the girl’s side, however, the Gopher Conference watches for the maturation of one of the most intriguing young classes in the state of Minnesota. Two-time Gopher Conference champs New Richland-Hartland-Ellen-
dale-Geneva seemed poised to make it three in a row, despite losing key seniors Kelsey Christensen and Jenna Brekke. Among those returning to NRHEG are senior Amanda Barton and junior Alyssa Kerkhoff, both of whom were named to MaxPreps All-Gopher Conference Team last year. The Panthers also welcome back sophomore Anna Schlaak, who returns after one of the best freshmen seasons in recent conference memory. After finishing second to NRHEG last season, United South Central also appears to be serious contenders in the Gopher Conference. The Rebels are led by senior Taylor Allis and junior
Valerie Sahr, who will look to topple the Panthers and do what they could not last season: win the conference. Waterville-ElysianMorristown also appears ready to continue upon last year’s success after finishing third in the conference last season. The Buccaneers are led by senior Amanda Barton, and will look for Kylie Dorenkemper to take on a role of leadership as she enters her junior year. Even though last year’s powerhouses still appear to be the teams to beat, for both the men and the women, the always-competitive Gopher Conference is loaded with young players ready to prove themselves and hold their own.

staff writer This year the Gustavus Adolphus Men’s Hockey team will be looking to repeat as Minnesota Interlegiate Athletic Conference conference champions. Last year the Gusties posted an overall record of 20-7-2 with a 12-2-2 conference record en rout to capturing the conference crown. The team was led by David Martinson who was named the winner of the 2010 Sid Watson Award which is given to the nations best Division III men’s hockey player. Martinson led the NCAA in goals per game scoring 29 goals in 29 games and fifth in points per game with 49 in 29 games. This year, with Martinson
having graduated, the Gusties will have to look elsewhere for offensive production. The team’s offense should flow through junior captain Ross Ring-Jarvi with the defense being handled by senior captain Mitch Carlson. Senior forwards Brad Wieck and Ryan Noonan should also contribute to the offense. Senior Josh Swartout should make most of the starts in-between the pipes being backed up by sophomores Tyler Venne and Jason Aguiar. Brett Peterson is entering his 11th season as head coach for the Gusties. In his previous ten seasons Peterson has compiled a 133-116-18 record. He is a native or Roseville, Minn., and was a four-year letter winner in hockey at the
University of Denver, serving as the assistant captain for the Pioneers during his junior and senior seasons. Former Gustie hockey player Jared Phillips will be in his second year as assistant coach for the team. The Gusties started off their 2010-2011 campaign with a 3-1 record that included wins over Augsburg and St. Mary’s and Wisconsin Eau Claire and a loss to Wisconsin River Falls. The teams’ scoring has come from many different skaters seven players scoring the teams nine goals. Freshman Zach May and sophomore Ryan Johnson are ties for the team lead for goals with two each.

GUSTAVUS BASKETBALL
Gustavus has confidence in MIAC REPORTER STAFF
The Gustavus men’s basketball team traveled to Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Monday night to face Augustana College in an exhibition contest to open the 2010-11 season. The Vikings shot an impressive 62.3 percent from the field and claimed a convincing 101-74 win over the Gusties. Seth Anderson and Ben Biewen led Gustavus in scoring with 12 points each. The Vikings came out on fire making 10 of their first 15 shots and built a 14-point lead at 29-15 at the 9:43 mark of the first half. Augustana continued to build on its lead and headed into the locker room at the intermission with a 20-point lead at 51-31. The Vikings scorched the nets in the first 20 minutes making 71.0 percent of their shots (22-31). Gustavus was also hot from the field shooting 59.1 percent (13-22), but made nine fewer field goals. The Gusties used a 23-14 run to open the second half to cut the
lead to 11 at 65-54 at the 12:00 minute mark. Augustana, however countered with a 20-11 run over the next five minutes to build the lead back up to 20 points and never looked back on its way to the 25-point victory. The Viking defensive pressure led to 10 steals and forced 22 Gustie turnovers. Gustavus outrebounded Augustana 26-24. Three Gustavus players reached double figures in scoring including Seth Anderson and Ben Biewen with 12 points each and Paul Blacklock with 10 points. Trevor Hass led Augustana with 23 points. Gustavus will officially open its 2010-11 season on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at home against Buena Vista University at 7:30 pm Women's The season hasn't started yet for the Gusties, but they have had a successful offseason. The Gustavus women’s basket-
ball team was named to the Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) on Tuesday, July 20. The Gusties ranked 11th out of 424 NCAA Division III women’s basketball teams with a 3.494 team grade point average (GPA). This past season marks the third consecutive year the Gusties have earned a top 25 ranking from the WBCA along with the 8th time in the past ten years. The Gustie women paired their success in the classroom with success on the court finishing the 2009-10 season with a 20-6 record overall and an 18-4 record in conference play earning the title as MIAC champions shared with the College of St. Benedict. Achieving success in the classroom and on the court proved to be no simple task as Head Coach Mickey Haller’s squad was one of six NCAA Division III Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll recipients to win at least 20 games.
SCC BOY'S BASKETBALL
SCC seems up for grabs
PAT DELANEY
staff writer While fall sports are still going on, many high school athletes in Minnesota are beginning to turn their attention to the winter sports season. If you walk inside the gyms of the schools of the South Central conference, you will notice the volleyball nets have come down and are being replaced by basketball nets. Blue Earth County is looking to repeat as conference champions and as usual look like they could be the team to beat. Buccaneer’s head coach Gary Holmseth is one of the most respected coaches in the conference and has the most experience out of all SCC coaches. “Blue Earth is always going to be up there because they are so well coached,” said St. Peter head coach Kelly Raymond. “Gary does a great job of always getting the most out of his players and developing a good team.” As strong as the Buccaneers are, there is a lot to say about the other teams in the SCC. St. Peter is one team that wants to build upon a successful season last year where they finished second in the conference. The Saints return three starters from their team last year, including two All-Conference juniors. Joey Bartlett and Chad Poppen are looking to carry over the success they had last season when they transformed a young team into a contender. The Saints will again be

young but have the experience to possibly take over the top spot in the conference from Blue Earth. Raymond’s group has more size this season which is something that he hasn’t had much of since becoming the head coach. While Raymond is excited about the team he has this year, he isn’t counting out anyone in this conference. “This year it’s hard to say who stands out,” said Raymond. “It’s wide open. Any given night you can knock anyone out. It’s one of those years where any team can pos-
sibly win the conference with six wins.” New Ulm, St. James, Waseca and Fairmont round out the SCC and are all vying to climb up in the standings. Like St. Peter, the four of these teams will have Blue Earth circled on their calendars. A quick start to the season is hard to do in the SCC. With so many players being forced to make a quick transition into the basketball season it will likely be the team that finds the most consistency and improves as the season goes along who will come out on top.

sports editor Coming off a solid season in 2009-10, the Bethany men’s basketball team is looking forward to contending once again in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The Vikings finished last season 10-16 overall, but 9-5 in UMAC play. They play an attractive brand of basketball and really challenge themselves year-in and year-out in non-conference play, which helps prepare them for success in their conference. Bethany uses a get up and down runand-gun offense that flourishes when they are able to get stops on the defensive end. They also shoot a lot of three-pointers, making them a hard team to defend. This year’s squad is very deep and has a lot of talent, especially in the post, led by senior Aaron Mantey. The Vikings only had two players average double-figures last year, which is a testament to
their depth. Their success starts with sophomore point guard Patrick Garvin, who is currently recovering from a concussion. Garvin averaged 8.7 points last season and does a great job initiating the offense for the Vikings. Another player to watch is shooting guard Alex Weldon, who should jump into the starting lineup after transferring from Minnesota State-Mankato over the summer. Weldon is currently hampered by a broken foot, but should return shortly after the season starts. Bethany’s roster is loaded with freshmen and sophomores and only has two seniors this year. That being said, the Vikings expect to contend in the UMAC. They were picked to finish fourth in the conference, with Minnesota-Morris the favorite to win. Morris ended the Vikings’ season in the UMAC Tournament last year and is strong again this season. Northwestern and St. Scholastica are very even with
Bethany, and likely will be fighting with the Vikings for second place. Head coach Rick Jeddeloh, in his 15th year at Bethany, thinks his team is set up well not only for this season, but also for the future. “Although this group’s best seasons are ahead of them, our goal is to win the conference tournament and get the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament,” said Jeddeloh. Jeddeloh loves the men’s basketball team at Bethany’s tradition, as the program has only had five or six different head coaches spanning the last 70-some years. Since taking over for the Vikings, Jeddeloh has changed his goals as a head coach. “It used to be all about winning games, now it’s about getting 24 players going in a positive direction in life. If not immediately, hopefully five or 10 years down the road,” he said.

Both squads trying to get to .500 TIGE HUTCHESON

Call it the silver lining season for both teams. Last season, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Martin Luther College struggled, posting sub-.500 records and falling from the ranks of the contenders in Division III’s Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. But as with any “disappointing season”, there’s always a silver lining. With the Knights, that silver lining is familiarity. “We came through a rebuilding year and played a lot of freshmen last year. We lost only two seniors from our team last year and we only lost one starter [ leading rebounder Ryan Kolander],” said Martin Luther College’s head men’s basketball coach James Unke. “While we will still be young, we are returning experience.” Among the players returning from last year’s 7-17 men’s team is Greg Holzhueter, a reigning UMAC 1st Team AllConference selection. But Greg Holzhueter is only one piece of the puzzle. The Knights are also hyp-
notized by the potential of Greg’s brother, freshman Galen Holzhueter, and believe he can be a significant contributor immediately. “Both of these young men will be fun to watch and will be leaders on the team” said Coach Unke. Martin Luther College’s women’s team also has a lot to be excited about this season, despite coming off of a 10-15 season. The Knights will bring back the majority of last season’s team, including junior guard Erica Babinec, who was selected to both the UMAC 1st Team AllConference and the UMAC All-Defensive Team. Also in the fold for Martin Luther College’s women’s team is junior guard Sarah Free, who was named a UMAC All-Conference Honorable Mention following last season. The combination of Babinec and Free should give the Knights one of the better backcourts in the UMAC for the next two seasons. The men’s and women’s team will start the season looking up at similar foes. The University of Minne-
sota-Morris was selected as pre-season favorite on both the men’s and women’s side. “The University of Minnesota-Morris is the pre-season favorite,” said Coach Unke “They are an experienced club and have all of the pieces in place to be a real handful.” Northwestern College is also expected to make a run for the UMAC title after being ranked pre-season second place in both men’s and women’s basketball. While both the men’s and women’s teams at Martin Luther College were ranked in the bottom half of the UMAC in pre-season polls (the men in fifth and the women in sixth), there is a lot to be excited about and a ton of potential on both squads. And in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, there is never a clear-cut favorite. “It is pretty even and should be a battle every night” said Coach Unke. While only time will tell whether either team has improved since last year, there sure is a lot to be excited about.

MINNESOTA RIVER CONFERENCE BASKETBALL
Jordan and Holy Family expected to compete for title DREW CLAUSSEN
staff writer The 2010 Minnesota River Conference on the boy’s side should once again be a strong one with many teams contending for the conference crown. “I think Central-NYA will be strong since they were mostly seniors, Holy Family is always tough and LeSueurHenderson was also underclassmen heavy,” said Mayer Lutheran head coach Kevin Boozikee. “Since Holy Family, Belle Plaine, Sibley East, and Lesueur have new coaching staffs recently it’s hard to judge who is the clear favorite, but I think it should be very wide open.” Boozikee’s team finished first in the conference last year posting a 26-3 overall record. Mayer graduated eight seniors from last year’s team but will return four part-time starters with big game experience to this year’s squad. Sibley East finished second last year with a record of 23-5. Mike Feterl will take over as head coach for this year’s team that will feature seven seniors. Sibley East will have to deal with the departure the 2010 Minnesota Associated Press
Player of the Year Marshall Bjorklund who is playing for North Dakota State University. “We will look to an up tempo offensive style, solid defense, and good outside shooting to be successful this year,” Feterl said. Last year’s Jordan High School team finished third in the conference with a 23-6 record and represented section 2AA in the state tournament. After graduating seven seniors all of whom were in the rotation, this year’s team will have a different look to it. The team will need their young talent to come together to contend in the conference this year. “We do have some good young players, and we'll have lots of competition for playing time,” said head coach Matt Urbanek. “I'm eager to see ho we respond to the challenge of filling those spots.” Holly Family Catholic, Belle Plaine, LeSueur Henderson, Montgomery-Lonsdale and Norwood Young America rounded out the conference last year. ference Holy Family, LeSueur Henderson and Jordan will look to build on their strong seasons last year. Holy Family posted an 18-9 record last year and captured the conference crown. This year they will lose six seniors from last year’s team but are content with their talented group of underclassman replacing the departed players. “Erin Steiner is our re-
turning senior and captain,” said head coach Pat Nelson. “She brings enthusiasm and hard work to the team and constantly supports all of her teammates.” LeSueur Henderson finished second last year with a 19-6 record. This year the varsity roster will be made up of five seniors and four juniors, which should provide the team with plenty of experience.
Jordan, Mayer Leathern, Belle Plaine, Sibley East, Norwood Young America and Montgomery-Lonsdale rounded out the 2009 conference standings. “Jordan has always been a very good team and will contend with us for the conference championship,” Nelson said.

MINNESOTA STATE WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
For Mavericks, youth looks to take over in 2010-11 TIGE HUTCHESON
staff writer With both a National Championship and one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory in the rearview, this could be a make-or-break year for the Minnesota State University, Mankato women’s basketball team. After a stunning 103-94 victory Franklin Pierce University and eventual WNBA draft pick Johannah Leedham in the 2008-2009 NCAA Championship game, the Mavericks followed up with a bit of a hangover in 2009-2010. After losing the heart and soul of the squad that brought back hardware just the season before, MSU had no choice but to rely on a largely inexperienced roster including seven freshmen to compete in the competitive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. As they suffered through growing pains and an identity crisis, the Mavericks had to settle for a 15-13 overall record, a stark disappointment compared to the previous year. This season, with a replenished cupboard of more experienced players and the target off of their back, there’s no telling what to expect of the Mavericks.
Led by head coach Pam Gohl, entering only her second year as the head coach of the Mavericks after leading MSU to the 2008-2009 title as an interim, the Mavericks were placed eighth out of fourteen teams in NSIC pre-season polls, reflecting all of the question marks and “what if’s” surrounding the team. One of the biggest questions facing the Mavericks this season is the question of “Who can step up as team leaders?” With the departure of senior NSIC First-Teamers Tiffany Moe and Liz Trauger, the Mavericks will look to Andrea Walsh, the lone senior on MSU’s roster, to help fill the void. Walsh is one of the last remaining starter from the 2008-2009 championship, but was forced to sit out all of last season with injury. To what extent Walsh can return to form will be a key factor in the Mavericks postseason hopes in 2010-2011. Another concern is who will be the Mavericks go-to scorers. Again, former Mavericks Tiffany Moe and Liz Trauger’s absence will be felt, as the scoring provided by Trauger (14.3 points per game) and
Moe (12.9 points per game) needs to be picked up by someone. While Walsh looks to be in the mix, the main candidates for the Mavericks are returning starters Jennie Noreen, Lauren Barber, and Laura Weber. Noreen averaged 11.8 points per game for the Mavericks last season, Barber shot a team-best 38.3% from three-point range, and Weber will be relied as MSU’s inside presence after putting up 8.7 points last season. And finally, the question of depth faces the Mavericks. While Walsh, Noreen, Barber, and Weber will probably be the focus on defense for most teams, the Mavericks have a number of other players that can make an impact including Sarah Wiens and Ali Wilkinson. Unless they want to continue living in the past, the Mavericks are in need of a strong season. Despite the question marks and unimpressive preseason ranking, the Mavericks have the talent to make some noise and finally start gunning for their next Championship run.

MINNESOTA STATE WOMEN'S HOCKEY
New and young generation leads MSU women's hockey LEE HANDEL
staff writer Through the first eight games of the season, the Minnesota State Mankato women’s hockey team was playing much better hockey than their 2-5-1 record indicated. With the brutal October schedule behind them, which featured six games against three of the top teams in the nation, the Mavericks were finally able to enforce their will on an opponent in a weekend home sweep of rival St. Cloud State. SCSU entered the weekend winless on the year and desperate for points, but the Mavericks put them away early Friday night at All Seasons Arena and won 4-1. MSU controlled play in Saturday’s game as well, capping off the impressive series sweep of the Huskies with a 4-2 victory. This year’s roster under second-year head coach Eric Means has a lot more depth and upside than last year’s squad, which finally resulted in some winning efforts over the weekend. While the underclassmen were surprisingly carrying the bulk of the scoring load against some of the WCHA powers early in the season, the upperclassmen finally came up big in the sweep
of SCSU. The Mavericks put the Huskies in an early hole 1-0 on Friday when junior blueliner Ariel Mackley scored her first goal of the season just over two minutes into the game. Mackley’s third career goal was assisted by junior forward Emmi Leinonen and
senior forward Nina Tikkinen. The Mavericks doubled their first-period lead to 2-0 when freshman Kathleen Rogan notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season on another pass from Tikkinen. “Our girls did a good job of coming out and establishing the pace of the game,” said
Means. MSU was not done scoring in the second period, as junior forward Moira O’Connor tallied her third goal of the year on assists from junior defenseman Jackie Otto and Tikkinen. The helper gave Tikkinen three for the game, good for the first three-point game of her career.

Opening the 'Dorr' is key to success for Mavericks PAT DELANEY

For most kids growing up playing hockey in Minnesota, their dream is to play college hockey at the University of Minnesota. And why wouldn't it be? The Gophers have a rich tradition of winning, they are one of the biggest programs in the WCHA conference. They consistently play in front of 10,000 people at legendary Mariucci arena. Minnesota State junior forward Michael Dorr thought he would be enjoying all the perks of playing at Minnesota. Dorr signed his intent to play for the Gophers after establishing himself as one of the best high school hockey players in Minnesota. Dorr was an All-State selection in both his junior and senior seasons at Roseville High School. He was also a finalist for the 2007 Minnesota Mr. Hockey award and being named Star-Tribune Metro Player of the Year. Despite these accomplishments, Dorr never really fit in with the Gophers. The excitement of wearing the maroon and gold wore off quickly after receiving little playing time early in the year. Dorr would end up only playing in two games for Minnesota. "I wasn't even given a chance to prove myself," said Dorr. "I
think the two games I played in I got eight shifts. How am I supposed to prove myself in eight shifts?" The process of choosing a new school began all over again for Dorr after deciding to transfer out of Minnesota. NCAA rules forbid coaches from talking to players who are transferring during the season, but that rule doesn't include players talking to players. This worked in favor for the Mavericks. They had one of Dorr's former teammates on their roster. Adam Mueller was a freshman at MSU when Dorr informed his former teammate that he was transferring. Mueller recommended MSU as a good fit for Dorr. Dorr and Mueller had been friends for years, growing up only a couple miles apart. The two talked frequently and it led to Dorr joining the Mavericks. "A lot of my communication was with Adam," Dorr said. "Adam was definitely a way for me to communicate and get a feel for the school before making that jump." Due to NCAA rules, Dorr had to sit out the first half of the season when he arrived at MSU last season. But Dorr made his pres-

MINNESOTA STATE WRESTLING
Mavericks go through cycle of losing All_-Americans DREW CLAUSSEN
staff writer The #7 Minnesota State, Mankato Wrestling team will be looking to improve on their 2009-2010 season in which they fell short of their own expectations. The Mavericks finished the year with a 9-5 record in dual action going 3-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The team had a fourth place finish in regional action and had seven individuals qualify for the NCAA championship tournament. “We had some disappointments but we had some successes too, we were top three in the nation in the national duel meet championships and we were top six in the NCAA’s,” said head coach James Makovsky. “Our goal is to always to be at least top four with our main goal of winning it. So we fell a little short of our goal last year.” Makovsky, who is entering his 18th season as the head coach of the Mavericks, said the key to improving lies in the practice room. He said that there needs to be better competition between teammates in practice and that the team needs to work on its depth. “Steel sharpens steel, when you’re wrestling someone that’s tough everyday you morph into that kind of wrestle,” Makovsky said. “It takes a lot to do your best when it doesn’t take your best to best to beat somebody.” According to Makovsky the team is made up of a group
of very coachable guys that he thinks should shape into a pretty good team. The Mavericks will have to replace Brady Wilson and Travis Elg both of who were All-Americans on last year’s team. “On average we’ve been losing four seniors (each year) and usually three of them have been All-Americans,” Makovsky said. “So we’ve done it over the years and we’re in that situation again, we have to have some guys step up.” Senior Andy Forstner at 125
pounds and junior Aaron Norgren at 184 pounds will lead this year’s Maverick squad. Both were All-Americans last year. “Andy is a two-time-AllAmerican and one of the hardest working guy’s I’ve seen,” Makovsky said. “Aaron Norgren has really stepped up his game, he proved himself at the end of the year showing what he can really do.” This year will mark the end of Forstner’s college career in which he earned everything that he received. Including

a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division II National Championships. “He’s been through a lot in his career, he didn’t start until his sophomore year and redshirted,” Makovsky said. “He was a back up his freshman and got the snot kicked out of him then really broke through his sophomore year.” Another wrestler to watch is sophomore Robby Fisher who should improve on a solid freshman season. Pat Mahan will also return to the team after sitting out last year with a
shoulder injury. “Robby had a decent freshman year last year and is definitely capable of taking that next step,” Makovsky said. The Mavericks opened the season Nov. 10 by they shutting out Waldorf 49-0 at the Taylor Center. The team will spend the next couple of weeks competing in open tournaments across the upperMidwest before opening up conference play on Jan. 14 at home vs. Mary.

SCC GIRL'S BASKETBALL
St. Peter looks to make another run at state tourney LEE HANDEL
staff writer
After making an impressive run to the state tournament last year, the St. Peter girl's basketball team is primed to reign supreme in the South Central Conference in 201011. The Saints return many of the key players from last season’s squad, as the team’s top six scorers from last year are back. They are sure to be challenged by the rest of the conference, which is full of teams with high hopes heading into 2010-11. Although they didn’t even finish on top of the regular season SCC standings, St. Peter really came together when it mattered most last season, winning nine straight games down the stretch before being ousted in the state tournament by Rochester Lourdes 49-42. The Saints finished the year 21-7, despite starting off the year 5-4. The Saints are led on offense by senior guard AnnMarie Brown, who averaged 18.5 points last season and shot 40 percent from three-point range. Also returning is junior guard Katy Kuiper, who averaged 13.8 points last season and scored both inside and outside. Kuiper shot 50 percent from
the field, including 40 percent from three-point range. Sophomore center Tailor Raymond also made big contributions to last year’s run, averaging 11.9 points on 54 percent shooting in her rookie campaign. The rest of the SCC isn’t far behind St. Peter, as Fairmont and Blue Earth Area both defeated the Saints early last year and should be competitive again this season. The Cardinals and Buccaneers both
went 8-2 in SCC play, tying for the regular season conference championship. The SCC had three teams with over 20 wins last year, and is one of the most competitive girl’s basketball conferences in the state. Even New Ulm, who went 8-17 last season, was able to beat state qualifying St. Peter. Fairmont lost only three games last season, once to both St. Peter and Blue Earth Area. They were eliminated
in the section tournament by Pipestone Area 57-47. The Cardinals lost six players to graduation, but have a returning senior class ready to carry the load this season. Blue Earth was knocked out of sections by St. Peter, losing a heartbreaker to the Saints 53-52 to end their solid season. The Buccaneers lost nine players to graduation, but have a deep team that should still compete this season.
Rounding out the conference is New Ulm, Waseca and St. James. New Ulm could be a darkhorse in the SCC this season, and Waseca should also be improved. St. James did not win a conference game last year, but should do better this season. Although St. Peter is the preseason favorite to win the conference and make a run towards state, the rest of the SCC should give them a run for their money.

GOPHER VALLEY WRESTLING
Lake Crystal Wellcome-Memorial is conference favorite PAT DELANEY
staff writer
When you think of the Gopher Valley conference, one team stands out above anyone else. The competition is solid every year with every weight class usually sending an individual to state, but as far as teams go, Lake Crystal Wellcome-Memorial clearly stands out above the rest. “Lake Crystal is by the far the top team in the conference,” said Nicollet head coach Mike Amsden. “They have some great wrestlers who will be in the state tournament this season. They are the frontrunner.” The Knights were in the state tournament last season and had great results with a consolation championship. They would like to build on those results after returning some key members from last season’s group. What separates the Knights from the other teams in the Gopher Valley is the balance they have at each weight class. Head coach Andre Harnitz has been able to get the most out of his wrestlers every year and has turned his team into one of the dynasties of Class A wrestling.
The Knights draw all the attention in the conference but that doesn’t mean the rest of the teams are push-overs. Maple River has established themselves as one of the most consistent programs around the state and would like to bounce back after a couple down seasons. The most experience may lie with Martin County West. The Mavericks sent two guys to state last season and would
like to build upon that this year. The most interesting team in the conference this season may be Nicollet who will have a larger group this season. The Raiders sent one guy to state last season and could have a chance to build upon that this year. GFW was going to have to terminate their wrestling program but instead will now join Nicollet this year adding depth to an already promising team.
With the season right around the corner, the teams of the Gopher Valley are eagerly awaiting another year on the mats. Wrestling training is perhaps the most intense out of all sports with athletes beginning to focus on making their weight as soon as practice gets underway. The preparations that are being done now will decide who will have a chance as the season gets into the
later months. Like all coaches, Amsden is preparing his athletes for what he hopes will be a season ending at the state tournament. “We want to focus a lot on aerobic activities and getting guys working on their short bursts,” said Amsden. “The middle of January is where you really like to see guys kick it into gear.”

TOMAHAWK BOY'S BASKETBALL
Springfield boy's are expected to take Tomahawk TIGE HUTCHESON
staff writer
The Tomahawk Conference year in and year out has been known for its competitiveness and the even distribution of talent throughout its teams, and 2010-2011 season is set to be no exception. While there is never a clear cut favorite in the Tomahawk Conference, several teams appear good enough in preseason to make some noise later on. On the men’s side, all eyes are set on Springfield, the reigning conference champs. After bucking an 8-9 conference record in 2008-2009, the Tigers crawled out from the middle of the confer-
ence and shocked the Tomahawk by winning the conference in 20092010. But after seeing key players on last year’s team graduate, do the Tigers still have enough fight left to repeat? While Springfield is certainly a player, perennial power Cedar Mountain/ Comfrey brings back the core of last year’s 18-8 team and appears to be the favorite to win the Tomahawk. The Cougars bring back one of the best offenses in the Tomahawk Conference, led by well-rounded guard Nate Golden who averaged 17.1 points, 2.9 assists, and 7.2 rebounds per game last season, all among the
leaders in the state. The Cougar’s offense is also spurred by returnees Dalton Kleinschmidt and Zak Pendleton. Kleinschmidt ended the 2009-2010 season with a 20.5 points per game average, the eighth highest in the state, and Pendleton’s 4.0 assists per game average was thirteenth. New Ulm Cathedral will also be in the mix, bringing back the majority of last year’s mild 12-13 team. The Greyhounds bring back of the Tomahawk’s most promising players in guard Kevin Larson. Larson stuffed the box scores in 2009-2010, averaging 17.6 points per game and 4.0 assists per
Duke gets first win of year DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Nolan Smith scored 22 points and No. 1 Duke opened its season by beating Princeton 97-60 on Sunday in the first round of the CBE Classic. Freshman Kyrie Irving had 17 points and Kyle Singler added 16 for the Blue Devils, who shot 55 percent and hit 14 3-pointers. Opening a season as the top-ranked team for the seventh time, the Blue Devils never trailed and broke it open
by outscoring the Tigers 24-11 during the first 8 minutes of the second half. The reigning national champions also did it with defense, forcing 27 turnovers and turning those into 36 points. Dan Mavraides scored 16 points to lead the Tigers (1-1). They outrebounded the Blue Devils 31-29 but never got closer than 11 in the second half and fell to 1-18 in the series. game, both among the top fifteen in the state of Minnesota. Paired with a young, budding post Brian Nosbush, Larson and the New Ulm Cathedral should be in the mix to win the Tomahawk Conference Championship as well. On the girl’s side, Cedar Mountain/Comfrey is coming off of their second straight conference championship, posting perfect 16-0 conference records both of the past two seasons. Led by Tomahawk Conference 2009-2010 Coach of the Year Mike Kelly, the Cougars have lost most of their familiar faces, but shouldn’t be counted out by any means.
Also in the fray is Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, was finished second to Cedar Mountain/Comfrey last season after posting a 13-3 conference record. The Mustangs bring back perhaps the most dominant player in the Tomahawk Conference, Karlee Ilgen. Last season, Ilgen ended with a 15.7 points per game average, thirteenth highest in the state, as well as 8.1 rebounds per game which was one of the highest in the conference. With plenty of talent across the board, the 20102011 season should be a memorable one for the Tomahawk Conference.

And the circus continues... CHICAGO (AP) — After ripping coach Brad Childress behind his back all week, the Minnesota Vikings finally backed up their words with deeds. They didn't exactly quit Sunday against the Chicago Bears, but their effort was far from a ringing endorsement of their embattled boss. They got beat physically all over the field, folded up in the second half and lost every phase of the game by the time it was over. Brett Favre, returning to Soldier Field on the heels of yet another signature comeback against Arizona only last week, fumbled once and was intercepted three times. And he was far from Minnesota's only problem. Two of those interceptions came when Favre's receivers slipped and a third followed a tipped pass. But he wasn't about to kid himself and write them all down to bad luck. The Vikings still have all the pieces that made them a preseason Super Bowl pick, but there's no denying the sum of those parts is — at the moment, anyway — the NFL's most dysfunctional family. His eyes watery and his voice low, Favre wondered aloud whether a return for one more season was the right call. "Had I known it would be like this," he said after a 27-13 loss dropped the Vikings to 3-6 and all but knocked them out of playoff contention, "sure, it would have been easier to make a decision." Favre is not the only

member of the organization suffering some form of buyer's remorse. Several others, including some players, leaked word to the Chicago SunTimes earlier this week that Childress could count on little support and even less loyalty from the locker room going forward. "We know Childress doesn't have our backs, so why should we have his?" one player said. "We're playing for us and we're winning despite him." Now they're not even doing that. Childress said afterward he had no problem with either the team's or Favre's effort. But he wasn't handing out any praise, either. "I know our receivers probably could have stood up, there were a couple slips there. But I thought he had a pretty good rhythm early on in the passing game," Childress added, "and how he lost that hand, I'm not
sure." The last part could be interpreted as a subtle dig at his quarterback, but who knows with these Vikings? Everyone from owner Ziggy Wilf on down has weighed in — on and off the record — on just about every decision that's been made. It's forced people to choose sides in a tiring string of debates, from whether bringing back heretoday, gone-tomorrow receiver Randy Moss was a good idea, on down to Childress' mix of run and pass plays on offense from week to week. Favre, who's pushed the passing option most of the season, may have taken a subtle dig at his coach this time around by suggesting the Vikings didn't run enough. It came as Favre tried to explain how the Bears defense zeroed in on him during a tough second half. Favre

the holder of another impressive streak was in the crowd — Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. This one initially figured to provide an interesting contrast between the Blue Devils' newly installed, highenergy defense and the patient, backdoor-cutting offense that has been the Tigers' signature. But Duke's pressure routinely frustrated Princeton, preventing the Tigers from working the ball to their center and created 17 turnovers in the first half. Despite that, the Blue Devils led just 34-28 with less than 90 seconds before the break, but reeled off the final eight points of the half on 3-pointers roughly 20 seconds apart from Smith and Singler. That pushed the lead into double figures to stay.
And then came the big run. Mason Plumlee started it with a layup 15 seconds into the half, and Irving scored eight points during the burst. His free throw with 15:14 left made it a 20-point game for the first time, and his 3-pointer with about 12 minutes to play pushed it to 66-39. Liberty transfer Seth Curry scored 14 points in his Duke debut and Andre Dawkins added 11 for the Blue Devils, who hit 20 of 30 shots after halftime. Ian Hummer added 14 points for Princeton, which was playing its first game against a reigning national champion since the Tigers' memorable upset of UCLA in the 1996 NCAA tournament. Princeton coach Sydney Johnson was a guard on that team.

completed 9 of 12 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in the opening half, posting a quarterback rating of 128.8; in the second, he was 9-of-19 for 56 yards and threw three interceptions. His quarterback rating tumbled to 44.4. Asked what adjustment the defense made, Favre said simply, "The Chicago Bears, they don't adjust." A moment later, he added, "They came in with the mindset they were going to play 'cover two,' which is daring you to run the ball. There were tight windows to throw in. I was trying to take what they were giving us, but we know what happened." What happens next is anyone's guess, though it's hard to imagine either Favre or Childress winning the battle of wills decisively. The quarterback is making $1 million per game. The coach signed a five-year contract extension after the team reached the NFC championship game last season. He did not sound concerned that the volume will likely be cranked up on calls for his firing. Childress planned to be coaching next week, he said evenly, "until I get any word differently." But there's little doubt who won the popularity contest.
Other than talking into his headset, Childress had so little contact with his players or other assistants on the sideline Sunday that he could have been mistaken for one of the guys carrying the down-anddistance markers. He exchanged words with Favre briefly on the sideline with 8:37 left in the game. But offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, who's functioned as a go-between for coach and quarterback all season, quickly showed up and the conversation between Childress and Favre ended. Two plays later, running back Adrian Peterson fell at the end of a pass route over the middle and Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs intercepted the pass. "The way we're playing, it will take but a couple more losses and we will be out of it," Favre said. "That's just being honest. I don't know how to sugarcoat it." About the only topic everyone on the Vikings agrees on is the time has come to shut up and play. "The more you talk about it," said defender Jared Allen, "the more it remains an issue."
Despite Favre's struggles, one rival still looks up to him
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Growing up watching Brett Favre, Jay Cutler never envisioned they would be rivals. Well, look at them now. Gunslingers young and old will meet again Sunday when the Chicago Bears host the Minnesota Vikings in a game that could go a long way toward determining each team's fate in the NFC North. "I didn't imagine he'd still be playing when I'd be playing, but you never know," said Cutler, the Bears' quarterback. "Growing up watching Brett and Elway and some of those guys — he still looks good. He's still doing some of the same stuff he used to." And Favre said he sees a little of himself in Cutler. Both have rocket arms and both believe they can zip passes through any opening, no matter how tiny. It leads to spectacular completions, the kind that draw oohs and aahs from the crowd, and loud groans when the ball gets deflected or picked off. Between Cutler and Favre, there will likely be plenty of both on Sunday. No one threw more interceptions than Cutler (26) last year. Favre (330) is the alltime leader, so it's no shocker that he's setting the pace this

FAVRE/CUTLER "I guess you're probably getting to the kind of river boat gambler mentality," Favre said. "I think when you have a big arm you feel like you can throw it through any coverage..." continued from 24 season with 13. Nor is it a surprise that the 41-year-old Favre in some ways sees the 27-year-old Cutler as a younger version of himself. "I guess you're probably getting to the kind of river boat gambler mentality," Favre said. "I think when you have a big arm you feel like you can throw it through any coverage, any window and, at times, you do. I see that in him. ... He's trying to take the good with the bad, you know what you're getting. I think he's a heck of a competitor, he's tough." Both have struggled at times this season but are coming off strong performances. Favre threw for a careerhigh 446 yards while leading the Vikings from a late 14-point deficit to a 27-24 overtime victory over Arizona that perhaps saved the season for the Vikings (3-5). If they win their next two against Chicago and NFC North leader Green Bay, they'll be right back in the division race, a big turnaround for a team that's been embroiled in drama all year. The Bears (5-3) could move into a first-place tie with Green Bay and build some momentum after escaping
with a 22-19 win over Buffalo in Toronto last week behind a strong performance by Cutler. Roughed up in recent weeks, he showed more poise and stayed on his feet, completing 17 of 30 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He got sacked just once, a big improvement after going down 19 times in his previous three games, but the numbers overall still aren't great. After a strong start, Cutler ranks 16th with an 86.0 passer rating and leads the league with 28 sacks. Blame that on poor protection and his own questionable decisions, whether he was hanging onto the ball or trying to hit a receiver who simply wasn't open. "I think to be successful at this position you have to take risks," Cutler said. "There's going to be certain situations where you have to put the ball in tight spots, but they have to be calculated risks. You learn over time when to take those chances and when not to. But sometimes you get caught up in the game and you're going to try to pump one in there." Favre, who's 27th with a 75.7 rating, knows all about that. He knows all about continuity, too, which is sort of a
foreign concept to Cutler. In his fifth season, he's played for only two head coaches (Lovie Smith and Mike Shanahan) but is on his fourth offensive coordinator in Mike Martz. Favre, by comparison, spent most of his time in Green Bay under Mike Holmgren. "Mike was my coach and he continued to be my coach until I was able to set out on my own, so to speak," Favre said. "If you look at Mike Holmgren and myself and you say 'OK, which one really was the difference maker in his success early on?' I would say Mike Holmgren. Because I didn't know any different. I didn't know a good play from a bad play in the West Coast offense. He had called those plays for years." Cutler, he added, hasn't had that consistency. "To me that's such a huge part of anyone's success, especially a young quarterback," he said. "You look at guys who have been in systems where they've been able to do that, they've flourished; maybe not right away but over time you see them all the sudden take off."

Morneau not happy with the dimensions of Target Field MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Twins slugger Justin Morneau says he and his teammates are disappointed the club hasn't moved the outfield fences at Target Field to make it easier to homer. The Twins this week announced $4 million to $6 million in improvements at Target Field, but didn't address players' concerns about the outfield fences. "Right-center to left-center is ridiculous," Morneau said in an e-mail to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "(It's) almost impossible for a right-handed hitter to (homer to the) opposite field and very difficult for lefties. It affects the hitters a lot, and you start to develop bad habits as a hitter when you feel like you can only pull the ball to hit it over the fence. You take those habits on the
road." The Twins hit 52 home runs at Target Field and 90 on the road, while their pitchers surrendered 64 homers at home and 91 on the road. Their 5328 home record was the best in the American League, while they were 41-40 away from Target Field. "We had a lot of discussions in the clubhouse with the manager and general manager, but right now there is no plan to alter the dimensions," Twins President Dave St. Peter said. Morneau said he hoped his comments didn't sound selfish and was more concerned with his team's success. He also said he's still not 100 percent recovered from a concussion that kept him out of the final three months of the season, but is feeling better.

Love's 31 points, 31 boards not enough in loss to Hawks
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks were relieved but anything but giddy after ending their four-game losing streak. The Hawks' inability to pull away from Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves convinced coach Larry Drew his team hasn't solved all of its troubles. Al Horford had 28 points and 10 rebounds and the Hawks held to beat the Timberwolves 111-105 on Sunday. Love had 22 points and 17 rebounds in his first game since posting 31 points and 31 rebounds in a win over the New York Knicks, the NBA's first 30-30 game since Moses Malone in 1982. Michael Beasley led Minnesota with 25 points. The Hawks led by 15 at 9378 early in the final period but couldn't put the game away. The Timberwolves cut the lead to four on a 3-pointer by Beasley with 17 seconds remaining. "We had ample opportunities to create separation but we made some bad plays and made some bad decisions," Drew said, adding his players "have to be smarter." "It's not a time to panic," Drew said. "It's an area I will continue to pay attention to every single day." Minnesota outscored the Hawks 33-28 in the final period but couldn't overcome 21 turnovers. "They outhustled us. They got second-chance points and rebounds and stuff like that,"
said Minnesota's Sebastian Telfair, who had 18 points and eight assists. "But our problem tonight was, between me and Kevin and Beasley, we had 15 turnovers. And we're the guys that have the ball in our hands the whole game. That shouldn't happen. Not for us to win." Horford needed three stitches for a cut on the top of his head following a collision with Anthony Tolliver late in the opening quarter. Horford returned midway through the second. "Our backs were against the wall," Horford said. "We've been in a slump, so it was a big one for us." Josh Smith added 23 points and 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which won for the first time since moving to 6-0 with a 113-103 win at Minnesota on Nov. 5. The Hawks avoided losing five straight for the first time since 2008. Smith led Atlanta's defensive effort on Love, who leads the NBA with his average of 14.6 rebounds after his big game against the Knicks. "Those are dramatic numbers," Horford said. "I think Josh Smith did a great job on him to contain him as best he could." Jamal Crawford, who led Atlanta's reserves with 11 points, called the win "very important." "At this point, we had to stop the bleeding," said Crawford, who acknowledged the Hawks' performance wasn't perfect.
"Right now we just have to take it any way we can get it," Crawford said. Minnesota led 17-7 after an 11-0 run, but Atlanta recovered to lead 30-27 at the end of the first period and kept the lead the rest of the game. The Hawks took their biggest lead at 81-64 and led 93-78 before the Wolves closed the deficit with a string of three 3-pointers. Corey Brewer's 3 cut the lead to 97-93, but after coach Larry Drew called a timeout, the Hawks recovered with two quick baskets by Smith and Joe Johnson and two free throws by Horford for a 103-92 lead. "I think that shows how hard we can work," said Beasley of the late comeback attempt. "We're a young team. We've got to find our niche, know when to speed it up, know when to slow it down, know when to pressure. But that comes with experience." Johnson finished with 17 points and Jamal Crawford had 11. Tolliver finished with 13 points for the Wolves. NOTES: Wolves C Nikola Pekovic (left foot) and G Wayne Ellington (left thigh) were not with the team. Ellington missed his fourth straight game, leaving Minnesota with 10 players in uniform. ... Horford blocked three shots. ... The Hawks had 12 steals, including three by Jeff Teague.

Boise State at No. 4 behind TCU in latest BCS rankings NEW YORK (AP) -- Watch out, TCU. Boise State is gaining. The Broncos narrowed the gap on the Horned Frogs in the Bowl Championship Series standings and put themselves in position to pass their BCS Buster rivals down the stretch. Oregon and Auburn are still in the top two spots in the standings released Sunday. TCU remained third, but had a bad week in BCS terms. The Horned Frogs and Broncos are vying for two prizes. The team in third place in the BCS standings is likely to be next in line for the national championship game if Auburn or Oregon slip up down the stretch. Auburn plays Alabama the day after Thanksgiving and South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference title game. Oregon has off this weekend, followed by a home game against Arizona and a road game against Oregon State. Even if a title game spot doesn't come up, TCU and Boise State are still competing for an automatic BCS bid, one that would likely send the highest ranked team
to the Rose Bowl while the other could get left out of the BCS altogether. The Horned Frogs played their closest game of the season Saturday, a 40-35 victory against San Diego State in which they allowed the Aztecs back in the game with two long fourth-quarter touchdown passes. TCU also was hurt by Utah's 28-3 loss at Notre Dame. The Horned Frogs beat the previously unbeaten Utes 47-7 in their prior game. It looked like a big win at the time and helped TCU widen its lead on Boise State in the BCS standings. A week later, beating the Utes doesn't look so impressive and Boise State has crept closer. The Broncos beat Idaho 52-14 on Friday night. With three more games to play, compared with one for TCU, the Broncos might have enough left to edge past the Frogs. Boise State jumped TCU and moved into third in both the Harris and coaches' polls, though in both cases the Broncos and Frogs are separated by less than a dozen points. TCU still holds a decided edge in the computer
ratings at third compared to Boise State's sixth. That leaves Boise State with a BCS average of .8634 and TCU with an average of .8966. Boise State plays Fresno State (6-3), Nevada (9-1), 18th in the BCS standings, and Utah State (4-6) over the next three weeks. TCU has a week off before closing its season against New Mexico (1-9).

ence felt when he was finally able to lace up his skates and take to the ice in a purple uniform. Dorr led the Mavericks in scoring during the second half of the season with 16 points. At 5'10, 189 pounds, Dorr doesn't possess overwhelming size, but he makes up for it with exceptional skills and relentless effort. He is being counted on more than ever this season after the Mavericks lost five of their top scorers from last year's team. "For us to be successful, we are going to need Michael to produce," said head coach Troy Jutting. "We will be counting on him." Dorr has taken that message to heart. He heavily increased his workout regimen in the off-season in preparation to be the offensive threat this team is in need of. Like the rest of the Mavericks, Dorr wants to prove that this team is better than the 10th place team that they were projected to be. "We can kind of use it as incentive to say ‘screw you'," Dorr said. "It's not something we can avoid. We are just focusing on putting ourselves in a position to give ourselves a shot to win." Playing college hockey is a stepping stone for many players to continue their careers when they are finished. This is true for Dorr who said he would love to continue to play hockey after college. An opportunity he said was diminishing at Minnesota. Dorr thinks back to a time when he was with his father talking to Jutting about the possibility of playing for the Mavericks. Jutting said he would be given an opportunity at MSU that wasn't given to him at Minnesota. "He told me that how I played would be the main factor in how much I would play," said Dorr. That statement has held true and Dorr is now getting the playing time that he was never given while with the Gophers. Through six games Dorr has established himself as the scoring threat the team knew it was getting when he transferred. His six points leads the Mavericks forwards in scoring and that number should continue to rise with the amount of shots Dorr puts on net. Dorr is second on the Mavericks in shots with 35. Dorr has become more comfortable at MSU after being here for more than a year. He said he is putting a lot of pressure on himself to produce with the hope of helping this team move from just being an after-thought in the WCHA to being a real contender. "Right away this season you could tell that all the guys on this team really click," Dorr said. "There is no group of players that distance themselves from rest of the team."

No Brewster, no problem for Gopher football CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Minnesota came to Illinois on Saturday as 21-point underdogs, with a long losing streak that cost coach Tim Brewster his job weeks ago and, you might think, leaving them little to play for. Some fans spent the week emailing Jeff Horton, Brewster's interim replacement, advising that senior quarterback Adam Weber see more of the bench so sophomore MarQueis Gray can start getting ready for next year. The Fighting Illini wish Horton would have listened. Weber threw for 225 yards on a wet, gray, windy Saturday and engineered a last-gasp touchdown drive that gave the Gophers (2-9, 1-6 Big Ten) a 38-34 comeback win. Tailback DeLeon Eskridge ran in the game-winning touchdown from 2 yards with 16 seconds left to play, his third TD of the day. As they drove down the field, the Golden Gophers felt like they had nothing to lose, Weber said. "At this point in the season, there's really no reason to feel nervous or on edge or anything, especially when you're in a two-minute drive," he said. "The biggest thing you have to do is stay calm, stay collected and try to score points." "Enough is enough," Horton added. "Enough heartache, enough setbacks."
The result leaves the Illini (5-5, 3-4) a game shy of bowl eligibility with only road games left at Northwestern and Fresno State, and wondering what's happened to the defense that was once their strength. Illinois has given up 105 points over the past two games, including a 67-65 loss to Michigan. "That's two games in a row now that we haven't handled the situations, two games in a row we haven't tackled the way we're capable of tackling," Illini coach Ron Zook said in a postgame radio interview. "It was a team effort — we're all going to suffer on this one." Minnesota's win seemed to surprise the Gophers at least as much as it did the Illini. Gopher assistants who work in the press box ran through yelling "Yeah! We got one!" as soon as the game ended. If not for Weber's and Eskridge's late-game magic — and two near interceptions that fell to the ground — it might have been Illinois assistants cheering a place in the postseason. Trailing 34-31 and facing a third and 10 at his own 20 with 2:30 to play, Weber dropped back to pass and didn't see an open receiver. Instead he saw a huge hole in the middle of the Illinois defense, and ran straight into it for 29 drive-saving yards to the Minnesota 49. Illinois then had its two
chances to finish the Gophers, and came up with neither. First Weber tried to hit Gray — also one of the Gophers' leading receivers — but instead found defensive back Tavon Wilson. Gray hit Wilson, knocking the ball away. Then, with the ball at Illinois' 6-yard line, Weber tried to force a pass to Da'Jon McKnight that defensive back Travon Bellamy had two hands on but dropped. Finally, from the 2, Eskridge rescued the Gophers, slicing through the left side of his line and into the end zone. Weber, who said during the week that he understood fans' calls for more Gray, was 20 of 26 for 225 yards and two TDs. He was seldom pressured by the Fighting Illini and wasn't sacked. Zook credited Minnesota's protection, noting Weber has been sacked a relatively low 15 times this season. But defensive coordinator Vic Koenning said his defense has played flat two weeks running. "We just haven't been able to get the spirit and get that last little edge," he said. "The defense has played so much with emotions, and we just haven't had the emotion (the last two weeks)." With just over eight minutes to play, the Illini looked close to locking up a sixth win and bowl eligibility when Mikel Leshoure burst around the right

end for a 55-yard touchdown that, with the extra point, gave Illinois a 34-24 lead. Badly needing an answer to Leshoure's potentially backbreaking run, the Gophers got a 92-yard kickoff return by Troy Stoudermire. Eskridge scored this time, too, running 4 yards on second down and pulling the Gophers back to within three at 34-31 with 7:55 to play. Leshoure, who finished with 141 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, said the Illini overlooked Minnesota, assuming they'd win. "I think guys were just looking past this game and trying to get bowl eligible," he said. "I'm not sure what the problem is, we just didn't play like we have in the past." Minnesota's defense sacked Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase three times, and held him to 172 yards on 10 of 21 passing. He threw two touchdown passes but struggled after an early 28-yard strike to A.J. Jenkins. The Gophers led 17-7 at the half, an advantage Horton said they weren't sure how to handle. "Halftime was almost as though it was the end of the game," he said. "We had to settle them down because we hadn't had the lead during halftime in a long time."

Tubby Smith and Co. to start season without Joseph
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — It's a good thing the Minnesota Golden Gophers are used to dealing with adversity because they got another batch of it on the eve of their season opener. Junior guard Devoe Joseph was suspended indefinitely Thursday night for a violation of team rules, taking the Gophers' most versatile offensive player out of the lineup for the foreseeable future. Coach Tubby Smith declined to discuss his specific reasons for the suspension, only saying that they were for multiple "off-the-court issues and other things he needs to deal with." "He's working his way through it," Smith said. "Hopefully he'll do all the things required of him to get back in good grace." Smith did not set a timetable for Joseph's return, but did say he will not be making the trip with the team to Puerto Rico next week to play in a tournament that includes North Carolina and West Virginia. "It's a long-term thing," Smith said. "But I see him doing it. I just hope he can do it." The 6-foot-3 junior from Canada averaged 9.4 points last season but was going to be relied upon more heavily this year with the departure of seniors Lawrence Westbrook and Damian Johnson. It's a tough blow for the Golden Gophers, who face a challenging schedule at the start of the season. They open at home on Friday night against NCAA tournament team Wofford and face Siena on Monday before leaving on Tuesday for Puerto Rico. "He's a guy that can get his shot, can knock down the open jump shot and plays with a passion," Smith said. "A kid that's competitive and just is a hard-nosed, tough kid." The Gophers know a thing or two about dealing with these things. Point guard Al Nolen missed the second half of last season because of academic issues and recruits Royce White and Trevor Mbakwe did not play all season because of off-the-court problems. White eventually left school. Mbakwe returned

this year and is expected to be a big contributor. "Last year I think a bunch of guys got distracted with the off-the-court issues," senior guard Blake
Hoffarber said. "We have guys that are used to dealing with it now." Smith said the program will stand behind Joseph as he works through his
"mistakes." He said he was disappointed in one of his veterans putting himself in this position, but he expects and hopes that Joseph will bounce back.

Saturday’s game featured more of the Mavericks’ newfound depth and upside, as a whole new cast of players put forth good efforts in the 4-2 triumph. The Mavericks took the first lead yet again when freshman forward Tracy McCann converted on a rebound off a shot from sophomore blue-liner Emilia Andersson to make it 1-0. MSU went up 2-0 on Tikkinen’s first goal of the season midway through the second period. She scored on a nice lead pass from sophomore forward Lauren Smith. The lead grew to 3-0 towards the end of the second period when McCann scored her second goal of the game and third of the season. However, the Huskies scored two straight goals in the third period to get within one, 3-2. But the Mavericks wouldn’t be denied their first home sweep since 2008, as Leinonen sealed the 4-2 win on the power play with her third goal of the season. The Huskies did show more fight in this game, putting 29 shots on freshman goaltender Danielle Butters. Butters held her own, however, saving 27 of them and earning the win in net. “We were good on the penalty kill, we were good on the power play, and we got some timely saves,” said Means. “It was good for our girls to get a sweep and put two wins together.” Butters is part of a talented freshmen class adjusting to life in the WCHA this year. The group has been tested early and has played well considering the Mavericks’ tough schedule to open the season. “The WCHA is a good league with good shooters. I’ve been lucky to have Alli [Altmann] helping me out and showing me the ropes,” said Butters. “I think all of us freshmen now know what to expect because of the tough schedule.” The Mavericks (4-5-1, 3-50-0 WCHA) think their best hockey in conference play is yet to come. “We’re finally getting into the swing of things,” said Mackley. “We had been having two good periods along with one bad, but now I think we are finally starting to play well for the whole 60 minutes.”

In-Kyung Kim wins Lorena Ochoa Invitational GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — South Korea's InKyung Kim won the Lorena Ochoa Invitational on Sunday for her third LPGA Tour title, closing with an 8-under 64 for a three-stroke stroke victory over Suzann Pettersen. Kim played the front nine in 6-under 30 and added three birdies and a bogey on the final nine. "I don't know how to really take this all in," Kim said. "But it's been a great week. I mean, on the golf course, I played very good golf all week. The putts pretty much kept dropping today. "Yesterday, it was missing this way and that way, and today, it started going in, the next started going in, and another one, and I'm like, wow." She had a tournamentrecord 19-under total on the Guadalajara Country Club course and earned $220,000, which she said she's donating to charity — half to the Lorena Ochoa Foundation and half to an American organization to be determined. "Before I came to the U.S., I wanted to come to the U.S., but I know it's tough and my parents are working really hard at the time when I was 16," Kim said. "And we weren't really rich, but it takes a lot of money to send me to the U.S. and go to school and all that. But there is one person who helped my parents, and if he didn't help my parents, or if he didn't help me coming to the U.S., I wouldn't really be here. Everyone

needs help. I think that's why I'm all about that." Pettersen shot a 68. The Norwegian star has six second-place finishes and 11 top-five finishes in 18 starts this season. She's winless since the 2009 Canadian Women's Open. "Another second-place finish. It sucks," she said. Pettersen had a double bogey on the fourth hole. "Hit one bad shot and that cost me two shots," she said. "And she made a birdie on the last. It kind of it felt like I gave her a gap. But other than that, I'm making some great putts coming down the stretch. Karine Icher finished third at 15 under, holing out from the fairway on No, 18 for a 68. Cristie Kerr (66) and U.S.
Women's Open champion Paula Creamer (68) tied for fourth at 14 under, and Ai Miyazato (70) finished at 13 under. Ochoa, playing her first LPGA Tour event since retiring in April, shot a 74 on her home course, leaving her 19 strokes back in a tie for 25th. "For sure I wanted to play better, but I think it was important for the week for me to try to enjoy it as much as I could, and that's what I did," Ochoa said. "It was the first time to have my husband on the course, and I think we both had a good time. And I want to say 'Thank you,' to the players for being here and making this tournament so special." Husband Andres Conesa, the CEO of Aeromexico, caddied for Ochoa.
"It was a great experience, something that you don't change," he said. "Obviously, she would like to have a better round today, but she leaves very happy and it was a great experience for both of us." Kim praised Ochoa after the victory. "She's just down to earth," Kim said. "She is always there. She is not just a great golfer. She has great warm heart. So that's why she's my idol. I don't have many idols. I want you to know that." Kim also won the 2008 Longs Drugs Challenge and 2009 LPGA State Farm Classic. The tour is off the next two weeks. The season-ending LPGA Tour Championship is Dec. 2-5 at Grand Cypress in Orlando, Fla.
