Mavericks look for improvement under new directions
The Minnesota State, Mankato men's hockey team looks to exit the cellar in their 2012-2013 campaign with first year head coach Mike Hastings now at the helm. RYAN LUND
news editor
It’s been a season of firsts, and a season of lasts, for the Minnesota State University, Mankato men’s hockey team. October 12th marked head coach Mike Hastings' first game as an NCAA head coach, leading the Mavericks to a 4-1 victory over the University of Alabama, Huntsville, shortly followed by his first WCHA victory, a 5-3 home defeat of preseason darling Minnesota on November 3rd. The clock on that rivalry, and many others, however, is ticking. November 24th marked MSU’s last trip to the Kohl Center to square off with a conference foe, as the upstart Mavericks downed the ailing Badgers in a pair of 4-2 contests, their first sweep of the University of Wisconsin in program history, followed by a dominating sweep of Bemidji State University the following weekend. Lost in the endless talk of the new Big 10 hockey conference, and the fledgling NCHC, formed out of the remains of the WCHA and CCHA to challenge it, the Mavericks have quietly begun to establish their presence in the new-look
WCHA. While many lamented the loss of some of college hockey’s premiere programs to presumably greener pastures, MSU went to work; ousting longtime head coach Troy Jutting in favor of Hastings, fresh off of stings in Omaha and Minneapolis, in an effort to change the tone of the school’s oftentimes disappointing hockey program. Hastings, however, continues to benefit from Juttings’ final recruiting class. Freshman goaltender Stephon Williams joined sophomore Matt Leitner as one of the WCHA’s players of the week on November 27, after the pair keyed the Mavericks to the historic sweep. Williams’ 60 save performance proved critical against a desperate Wisconsin offense that has averaged just over 3 goals per game this season, while Leitner’s five-point weekend, including a pair of goals, elevated the Mavericks when it counted. Williams has provided a fresh challenge for senior netminder Phil Cook, and impressed once again against Bemidji, recording his first career shutout against the Beavers. Freshmen Teddy Blueger, Dylan Margonari, Brett
Knowles and Bryce Gervais have all logged significant minutes in the Mavericks topsix, while Blueger, a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2012, leads all MSU freshmen in points with eight. However, for all of Bluegers’ touted skill, Margonari may have scored the season’s most important goal thus far, beating Minnesota freshman Adam Wilcox blocker-side for
his first career game-winner, ultimately handing the Mavericks their first WCHA win of the season over one of the league’s top teams. Margonari converted on a centering pass from another promising underclassman: right wing Max Gaede. Gaede, a third round pick of the San Jose Sharks in 2010, has netted just five assists in his last seven games, but has been a
valuable contributor in an offense that has struggled to score at times. Leitner has found his scoring touch in recent weeks, and is in the midst of an eightgame point streak. Fellow sophomore JeanPaul Lafontaine is doing his best to avoid a sophomore slump as well, registering 13 points on the season.

West hockey trying to improve from .500 mark set last season With the return of seniors Ryan Jutting, Nate Krueger and Ryan Lindquist, the Scarlets look to become the premier team in the city of Mankato once again after last season's 12-12-1 record. RYAN LUND
news editor
The Mankato West boy’s hockey team might not be the hottest program in the heavily contested “State of Hockey,” but in the city of Mankato at least, West holds the title. The Scarlets have dominated the local hockey landscape with a series of dominating performances against crosstown rival Mankato East, and have deep roots within the community. In an unusual turn of events however, those roots run both ways. West alum Corey Leivermann currently suits up at forward for local Minnesota State University, Mankato, while senior Ryan Jutting, son of former Mavericks head coach Troy Jutting, is attempting to lead the Scarlets back to success, after falling to Red Wing in last years Section A quarterfinals. Jutting, a standout for the Mavericks, returned as a coach to lead the team for 22 years making it all but inevitable that his son would one day lace up his own skates. Ryan was the Scarlets top scorer in 2011-12, netting 24 points, including 12 goals enroute to a 12-12-1 record.
Ryan Jutting will join fellow seniors Ryan Lindquist and Nate Krueger, as West makes another bid to return to the section finals. The Scarlets are off to a strong start after falling short last season, averaging 7.33 goals per game through three games, including a brutal 11-0 thumping of Mankato East. Junior Galt Goettl currently leads the team with 11 points, while fellow junior Jake Spiess has backstopped the Scarlets with a .940 save percentage. Goaltending was a question mark for West following the departure of senior starter Zach Fox, whose 2.26 goals-against average and .913 save percentage were critical to the Scarlets’ success. Despite their offseason uncertainty however, West still has little problem dispatching perennial rival Mankato East, as the Scarlets torched the Cougars 11-0 in a postThanksgiving blowout that put the team’s potent offense on display once again. Goettl got the Scarlets out to a fast start just 13 seconds in, beating Cougars’ netminder Jeremia Merela and igniting West’s offense, which incinerated East with
four goals in the first period alone. Junior forward Zach Erickson’s eight points, including four goals, led the Scarlets, while Tyler Loe’s six points proved critical as well. Still, the Scarlets will have to demonstrate that their offense can carry them past the rest of the Big 9 as well, and if their early success is any indication, it may not be as
difficult as they had imagined. West followed up the blowout with a convincing with over Winona, downing its conference rivals 5-1. Goettl led the way once again with three goals and two assists, as the junior had a hand in each of the Scarlets goals. Nick Campbell also had four points, as West improved to 2-0 in the Big 9.
While a series of successful runs and a well received account of the team’s tragic and inspiring founding, “Scarlet Ice,” have raised the team’s profile in the evercrowded Minnesota hockey scene, the Scarlets have much to prove if they plan to contend again this year. And with Jutting and company leading the charge, Mankato West might just find a way yet.

Vikings look to take UMAC by storm for second straight year
2012 started off slow, but the Bethany Lutheran College men's basketball team finished the season winning 13 of 14 games and stood atop the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. So with all five starters returnign for the Vikings, will anyone stand in their way? REECE HEMMESCH

After a 13-1 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference record last season along with a UMAC conference championship, the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings are at it once again and looking to repeat as champions. The Vikings return all five starters from last season’s triumph and have already been put in first place in the UMAC preseason coaches’ poll, finishing with 48 total points and six first place votes out of eight, thanks to last season’s success where the Vikings started off slow, but finished atop the conference winning 13 games. Their only conference-loss coming to Crown College in the last game of the regular season where the Vikings fell 7874. After the regular season ended, BLC obtained a victory in their first round matchup of the UMAC tournament over Minnesota-Morris, 84-75, before falling to Northwestern 66-40 in round two to bring their season to an end. With most returning and head coach David Balza,
last year’s UMAC coach of the year back at the helms; BLC knows that 2013 could be a big season. The Vikings have all the tools to repeat, but have sputtered early in their 2012-2013 campaign, starting the season with a 2-3 record. The Vikings began the season with a pair of matchups against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents, facing off against St. Olaf and perennial powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus College. Bethany would fight hard, but it would be the MIAC who would come out with two victories as BLC dropped both matches, 7466 and 83-63. From there, the Vikings left Mankato for River Forest, Illi. to take on Concordia Chicago, where BLC would obtain their first victory of the season, 74-62. The Vikings would see big offensive nights from senior guards Derek Peterson and Garrett Benson as the two front men hauled in 16 and 11 points respectively. Benson would not miss in the game, connecting on all four of his field goal opportunities including three from beyond the ark.
Peterson would show off his glasswork in the victory, tallying nine rebounds on the night. The Vikings then defeated Wisconsin Lutheran right after Thanksgiving in a tight 68-63 victory. It would be a balanced scoring attack this time as Peterson, sophomore center Garet Tucker and senior forward Gavin Kroehler would all find double digits in the win. After the two-game winning streak, BLC headed back home where they would drop their fifth game of the season to WisconsinLa Crosse in a tense, 67-55 loss. Kroehler would once again lead all scorers with 12 points in the low-scoring bout. The Vikings are struggling early, but one must recall last season’s ventures when a 2-9 start to the season resulted in a conference championship. With all the talent coming back from that squad, it’s easy to see why BLC would be staying optimistic at this point and anxious to get back into their UMAC schedule. So far this season, Kroehler leads all Vikings scorers with just over 12

Rebuilding mindset in store New coach looks to turn Cleveland for Mankato East boy's program around hockey program The Cougars struggled last season and bring in a new set of young talent to the table this year, but East knows that it's not always about this year. Sometimes, the future is the brightest star. ADAM KRIESEL

Improvement is the name of the game for Head Coach Aaron Anderson and the Mankato East boy’s hockey team. Following a 4-21 season, a conference championship may be out of the question. A lot of improvement remains for a team that struggled to both put the puck in the net and keep it out of their own. The defense will be heavily leaned on all season should a turn-around be in store. Led by senior Brent Adams and juniors Shane Sellner, Chris Liu and Sean Allan, the defensive core has the returning experience and upper-class leadership to be successful. “The best area of our game should be our team defense,” Anderson said. “We have many players with good defensive experience. Four of our top five defensemen are returning from last season.” On the flip side, there is a lot of work left to do with the forwards. Stuck in a scoring slump the past few years, Anderson is hopeful that a group of fresh faces will help buck the trend. “The area of our game that needs the most improvement is at the offensive end,” Anderson said. “We have not had a great scoring punch for the past two seasons. With the addition of some new players, along with returning players, we hope to become better on the offensive end of the ice.” Overall improvement will begin with senior captain Carter Johnson along with fellow seniors Teal Leskey and Nick Yess. It remains to be seen if they’re leadership will appear in the stat sheet, but their contribution to success will run deeper than that. With so many first-time varsity players up front, it is up to this group of senior forwards to lead by example and get everyone else ready for varsity competition. On the back end, it will be the tag-team duo of seniors Aaron Kroeber and Jeremia Merela trying to fill the void in net left by graduated goaltender Lucas Weihe. For
now it is an open competition to win the starting job, and one of them will need to show consistency between the pipes if they want regular minutes. In order to improve on last season, a winning attitude must be present on this team. That job falls on captains Brent Adams and Carter Johnson along with the other seven seniors on the roster. According to Anderson, they will be relied on to provide leadership and a positive attitude for the younger players. Speaking of younger players, this team is loaded with them. Judd Schulz is the only freshman listed on the current roster to go along with 12 sophomores. Consid-
ering the deep pool of talent in the Big 9 conference this year, early experience for the underclassmen could pay off huge in the next two years. With teams like Rochester Mayo, Mankato West and Albert Lea all locked and loaded, it may be too soon to dream of a conference championship for the Cougars. Early exposure to superior talent can only help the underclassmen, however. This team is not yet done growing, it is perhaps just the beginning of a rebuilding process. With the right mixture of senior experience and leadership and young potential and enthusiasm, this team could turn heads in the next few years.

the team and was the quarterback of the high school football team. Ziebarth will also be important to the team with his high energy play and defensive presence. “This is a really athletic team,” Fredrickson said. “It’s probably one of the most athletic teams I have ever coached so for us it’s going to need to be a pressing style.” The team will focus on the elements of the game they have control over. You are not always going to have amazing nights shooting the ball so the Clippers plan to prevent losing in those games by doing the little things. “We really focus on defense and hustle and rebounding, kind of controlling those things that we can control,” Fredrickson said. One area the team may need to address is the defensive side of the ball.
The Cleveland High School basketball season is just getting underway with a new coach at the helm trying to turn the program around from the last few years. The Clippers had an 8-14 record last year and look to improve on that mark this year. They will have a veteran squad returning and that experience may be what they need to get to the next level. Head coach Dan Fredrickson’s team will be led by many returning seniors including, including forward Tommy Kraft. Kraft was the leading scorer and rebounder on the team a year ago. “[Kraft] is a very gifted scorer,” Frederickson said. The team will also have Josh Plonsky and Kyle Ziebarth returning to the squad. The very athletic Plonsky is a captain on Cleveland Basketball / page 10

staff writer The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s basketball season is underway and their new starting lineup is looking to have another 20-win season. The Gusties had a dominate season last year finishing 20-7 overall. The team got past Concordia College 61-49 in the quarterfinal of the Minnesota Inter Collegiate Athletic Conference Playoff before ending their season with a loss in the Championship round to the University of St. Thomas. The Gusties have 11 of their 18 players returning from last year. However, the team lost some of last year’s key roles. The Gusties will have to replace seniors Colleen Ruane and Molly Geske who both received All-Conference marks last year. The three time all conference wing player, Molly Geske also led the team in scoring the past three seasons
and finished her career third in points scored in Gustavus history. Colleen Ruane will also be missed this year. Ruane broke the Gustavus school record for most steals in a career and was a twotime member of the MIAC All-Defensive team. The Gusties first year head coach Laurie Kelly will be making her MIAC coaching debut this year. Coach Kelly, a graduate of the University of St. Thomas, is not a stranger to the MIAC having played in the division while attending the University of St. Thomas. Kelly does bring in coaching experience having been the head coach the past nine seasons of the Division I Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks. Kelly knows her team may be young and a bit inexperienced but she likes where they are at this point in the season. The Gusties lost their season opener to Simpson College 67-45 but fol-
lowed the loss up by beating Buena Vista University at their place. The Gusties last nonconference game was at Minnesota State University, Mankato where they lost 9356. The Gusties had a tough non-conference schedule playing all the games on the road. However, Kelly thinks these tough away games will be beneficial to the team down the road. “I think that our nonconference schedule has really helped prepare us for our conference play, particularly since we open four of our first five on the road,” Kelly said. The Gustavus Women’s Basketball team opened conference play with a matchup with Augsburg College winning the game 63-52. The Gusties have a lot of season ahead and will look to win many more games this season. The Gusties, like many teams have a motion type offense, which Kelly hopes will effectively get her players in scoring areas. On the defensive side of the ball, the Gusties would prefer to play a man to man defense and hope to keep averaging the 11.8 steals a game they had last year. “We have motion style offense that hopefully allows our players to score in areas they’re comfortable,” Kelly Said. “Defensively our goal is to defend typically man to man and try to make our opponents take a tough shot every time down. We have a simple philosophy here: get stops.” Following last year's impressive season the expectations are high but that does not change the goal for the Gusties. With four of the five starters from last year no longer on the team, Kelly will look for players that previously did not have as important roles to “step up.” “I think like most teams going into conference play, you want to contend for a conference championship,” Kelly said. "This is a team that previously last year won 20 games and finished second in the league and I think your goal is to continue to try to be that top caliber team."
The Mankato East boys basketball team went all the way to Williams Arena last season where they fell to Grand Rapids. Now the Cougars will rely on some newcomers to continue their quest back to the twin cities. LUCAS RYAN
staff writer
The Mankato East boys basketball team is coming off a great season but lost many players from last year’s team. The team a year ago mounted a 14-3 record in the Big 9 Conference and went 23-5 overall. The cougars made it all the way to the quarterfinal of the AAA state tournament before losing 62-49 to Grand Rapids High School. The Cougars lost the Big 9 all conference player, Brody Ziegler who was also the leading scorer (16.2 per game) and rebounder on the team. Along with him the Cougars lost other the top five scores from last year who were also seniors and have graduated. This year’s team, led by head coach Joe
Madson, has a lot of players getting minutes for the first time on varsity. “We will not have the bulls eye on our back like we had last year,” Madson said. “We lost all five starters and probably our sixth man and our eighth man. It certainly is not experience coming back.” The goal for Madson and his team remains the same, “win every game we play” and will need players to step up that were not asked to last year. Yasin Omar is the only player who received significant minutes last year averaging 4.9 points, making his presence felt behind the three point line making more than 30 last year. Senior captain Jordan Grams will also be expected to play well as well

Saints hope a Scarlets look to forget last season and move on repeat is order to the challenge ahead. at the top of the South Central Conference
The Mankato West girls basketball team is coming off a dreadful 2012, finishing 8-19 on the season. This year's squad is still young, but head coach Kristin Krusemark believes this squad can be right in the thick of the Big 9.

The Mankato West High School Girls Basketball Team has started out the season out on the right note but still have a lot to prove. The Scarlets girls’ basketball team comes into the season with a new coach, Kristin Krusemark and hopes to rebound from a down season a year ago. The Scarlets 8-19 record last year may have been on account of having a young roster but that experience from last year might make them a dangerous team in the 20122013 season. The Scarlets lit up the
scoreboard in their first game, winning 62-35 against Fairbault High School in a neutral conference game but followed it up with a 66-52 loss to Marshal High School on Thursday, Nov. 29th. Defensively, the Scarlets like to use a man to man defense but do mix things up on that side of the ball. All teams have control over the effort they give on the defensive side of the ball and the Scarlets plan on making defensive effort one of the emphases throughout games. “In general we mix it up but we like a lot of pressure defensively, something we know we can control is our defensive pressure,” Krusemark said.
Offensively the girls will have some set plays but will run the floor and try to score in transition when there is an opportunity. “Offensively we like to push the ball but also we are really teaching the girls when they should set up a play and when they should run in transition,” Krusemark said. The Scarlets are not the deepest team in the league and will have to have some of the younger players step up, however they do have some talented players. “Cara Christiansen, she is our senior post player, she was our leading scorer last year,” Krusemark said. Christiansen averaged 17.9 points and 14.5 rebounds a game last year and will try to lead her team this season. Freshman guard, Lexi Schoper, is one of the younger players that is really stepping up this year. “Lexi Schoper, the first two games of the season, she has been our leading scorer,” Said Krusemark. “Lexi can shoot from the outside but she is also really great at driving to the basket.” Krusemark’s expectations for the Scarlets this year is be the best team they can be and control the things that they have control over, like practicing hard and playing hard on defense. “We are going to work to really just make sure that we make the most out of our potential this year,” said Krusemark. “We are going to work to make each other better every day at practice and make sure we are a fundamentally strong team that can put on lots of defensive pressure on other teams.” The Scarlets have a young team with a lot of potential and hope to grow throughout the year into a much better team. The goal at the end of the year for the Scarlets is to be a threat in Big 9 conference. “In terms of wins we want to win our last games and we want to be contenders in our section,” said Krusemark. The Mankato West girls will take on Waseca in their next game where they will try to get back on the winning track. The game is Dec. 6th at 7:30 p.m. and will be a home game for the Scarlets.
The St. Peter girl's basketball team and head coach Bob Southworth are right in the middle of a new era of success on the basketball court in both the boys and the girls squads in St. Peter. ADAM KRIESEL
staff writer
The Saint Peter girls basketball team has a lot of pieces to replace following last season’s 24-5 record, but head coach Bob Southworth is still confident this team can compete for a conference championship. Gone from last year are four starters and the majority of their offensive production, so it is easy to say that the team will have a new look this year. “This team will be a little different than last year,” Southworth said. “We have four new starters and quite a few new players in the rotation. I think we are going to depend on a little more scoring from the inside this year as compared to last year.” The four main pieces they have to replace are graduates
Katy Kuiper, Sid Dirks, Cassandra McCabe and Ashley Lager. Kuiper alone was a 20-point scorer so there is no doubt that the offensive production will need to come from elsewhere this season. For now, Southworth is hoping that the bulk of the production comes from the paint. With seniors Kelsey Carpenter, Kierstin Karlsrud and Tailor Raymond all playing down low, this is by far the most experienced area of this team. With no 20-point scorer to lean on anymore, the pressure lies on the forwards to pave the way on offense. If the frontcourt will be relied on to score, then the backcourt will need to take care of the ball. According to Southworth, ball security may be the biggest issue facing this team. With only two

as be a leader. “With Omar, we got a bonafide big time scorer. He gets us looks in a lot of situations. He is also a good passer.” Madson said. “Jordan Grams’ a good athlete, has good quickness, plays great defense, he can handle the ball a little bit and he can shoot the ball pretty good as well. The seniors on the team will set an example for the other players, however, outside of Omar, the team does not have another outstanding scorer and will have to rely on everyone getting into the mix scoring. “All the seniors I think will certainly lead us but we also have a couple good juniors and sophomores,” Madson said. “We got a lot of guys that can get you that 8-12 points and play well as a team.” Defensively, the Cougars usually play man to man but have played zone defenses in the past too. Towards the end of last year the Cougars started to incorporate some zone defenses into their games and Madson thought it might have been a turning point for the team. “In years past we have
been pretty good about mixing it up,” Madson said. “I think this year there are different things that we can incorporate defensively” On the offensive side, the Cougars are going to try to get out and run, pushing the ball up court when it is possible but also setting up their offense when the fast break is not available. “We certainly do want to push the ball up the floor and get some shoots but at the same time when we are not able to get that, we got to be patient,” Madson said. The Cougars’ next game will be Dec. 4th against the New Ulm Eagles and will be played at Mankato East High School with a 7:30 tip off. The annual in-city bout against cross-town rival Mankato West will be played on Jan. 15th at the Taylor Center on the campus of MSU-Mankato. It will be hard to outdo last year’s season but the new look Cougars are certainly going to try and are excited to do so. “I know the kids are excited and I know our coaching staff, we’re excited,” Madson said.
Cleveland Basketball continued from 6 Last year’s team gave up an average of 62 points a game. The new coach is an advocate for defense and hopes this year’s team can play defense like teams he has coached in years past. Fredrickson was the head coach at Glenville-Emmons High School for the previous ten years, where his teams played aggressive defense. He plans to bring that defensive mentality to Cleveland boys’ basketball. “The last three seasons at Glenville-Emmons, my teams defensively have been in the top five in the state in scoring defensive,” Fredrickson said. “So that’s one thing that we really preach is defense and hustle.” The Clippers run a variety of defenses from many different zone defenses to typical man defense. Fredrickson even alluded to a specialty defense he used at Glenville-Emmons that he plans to implement at Cleveland. I am the type of coach I like to limit everybody else’s (opponents) strengths so we want to tailor make our defense to exploit their weaknesses,” Fredrickson said. “We don’t go into a game just trying to force feed our man to man or force feed our zone.” One area the Clippers may be lacking in is size. They do not have a lot of big inside players but hope to make up for this disadvantage other ways.
BLC Basketball continued from 5
points a game followed by Tucker with around 10. But this team did not take home a conference banner last season due to selfish play, all five Vikings starters are averaging decent-amounts of points with just about everyone on the squad seeing significant playing time, a roster that can only be described as deep and talented. From here, the Vikings have six more nonconference bouts until they get into their UMAC schedule, which begins in 2013 against their southernMinnesota rivals, Martin Luther College. Their key non-conference matchup in the remainder of the year will come this weekend when the University of St. Thomas comes to town, who currently sit eighth overall in the d3hoops.com national poll and are 3-0 early in the season.
“We have the ability to control the tempo at any time in the game with the athletes that we have,” Fredrickson said. “That’s something that we really need to use to our advantage this year.” The Clippers are set to
return to the hardwood Tuesday, Dec. 4 against New Richland-HartlandEllendale-Geneva High School. The game will be played at Cleveland Highs School with a 7:30 p.m. tip off.

Cyclones bring a few back St. Peter "big boys" will lead this year from 2012's small, young big season The St. Clair girls basketball team obtained 18 victories in 2012 and with the help of veteran point guard Chelsea Schull and postman Katelyn Weber, many are wondering, why can't they do it again? LUCAS RYAN
staff writer
The St. Clair High School girls basketball season has started. The Cyclones are coming off a good season and will try to outdo the 18 wins from last year. The St. Clair Cyclones basketball season tipped off Nov. 27th, 2012 with a close 55-51 victory over United South Central High School. Head Coach Brian Noyes was pleased with how the team played considering it was the first game of the season. “We shot pretty well. We ended up with seven threes (pointers) on the night,” Noyes said. “We defended fairly well when we needed to late in the game and did the little things we needed to get the win.” The red and white will lean on their returning players from last year to carry the load. The Cyclones have about half the team returning from a season ago and hope to use the experience they gained to their advantage. “We got seven kids back that actually played quite a bit last year,” Noyes said. “We lost in the sub section championship game so we have pretty high expectations. The team is pretty driven after coming up a little bit short last year.” Last year the team went 18-9 and 10-3 in the Valley Conference. After having success last year, the Cyclones players are still working to get better. “They worked hard this summer and they are excited to be back on the court again this year,” Noyes said. One weakness for the cyclones may be depth. The cyclones may have a veteran squad but Coach Noyes pointed out that where they lack in depth, they make up in experience. “We aren’t that deep, but we have eight juniors and seniors that played quite a bit last year,” Noyes said. The Cyclones veteran
point guard Chelsea Schull has been a part for five seasons and is a player that the Cyclones look to for getting the offense started and hitting outside shots. “She has played since her eighth grade year,” Noyes said. “Really a nice player, she does a nice job getting into our offense and is a really nice shooter from the perimeter, pretty versatile kid.” The Cyclones also have an inside presence in junior center Katelyn Weber. Weber played last year and was a part of the reason behind the 10-3 conference record. “We got a six foot junior, post kid, who was a pretty big part of our team last year, pretty athletic kid, can face up, play with her back to the basket,” Noyes said. “So we got a nice inside-outside combination.”
On the defensive side, the Cyclones will try to create turnovers by using the full court to harass the opponent. “We pretty much play a lot of full court man to man,” Fredrickson said. “We like to pressure teams and let our defense turn into our offense.” Offensively the Cyclones will try letting their defense turn into good offensive opportunities. “I like to get an up tempo game and let our defense dictate what the offense does is how we like to approach things.” The next game for St. Clair High School will be Dec. 4th, 7:30 p.m., at Martin Luther High School. The Knights went 10-5 in there conference last year and could be a good matchup for the Cyclones.

The St. Peter wrestling team knows they have success at the big weights, but it's the small ones that will have to pick it up to deliver the Saints some victories on the mat. JOEY DENTON

To Head Coach Keith Hanson, the St. Peter Wrestling program “went really well” last season and they plan on transferring that to their 2012-2013 season. After their loss to Watertown Mayer in the Section 2AA playoffs, the team finished 17-11 as a team, and they are looking to return, if they can stay healthy. “We should be about the same if we can stay healthy,” Hanson said. The Saints will be returning two of their best wrestlers, Dylan Conner and Ashton Bartlett, as they become the team’s captains. Conner wrestled in the 195 weight class with a 29-9 record and Bartlett in the 170 class with a 30-7 record. Even with those two as captains coach Hanson has high expectations for his
younger wrestlers too. “Our Captains are Dylan Connor and Ashton Bartlett, also Kyle Bosacker, Joey More, Shaun Timmerman, Chris Pettis and Matt Sack have really improved,” Hanson said. Junior Kyle Bosacker wrestled in the 160-weight class and finished with a 2513 record, while sophomore Shaun Timmerman finished the season 21-11 in the 113weight class. Sophomore Chris Pettis ended the year 25-13 and senior Matt Sack finished the season 14-16 in the 138-weight class. Looking through the roster, you wouldn’t notice a lot of size, and that is one of the things Hanson is concerned about. “We do not have any "big" guys in the room and are young up top,” Hanson said.

Gusties will rely on experience to get back in the thick of the MIAC The Gustavus Adolphus men's hockey team returns a heap of talent from last season which could help them gain on their 17-7-5 record from a year ago. ADAM KRIESEL
• courtesy of SPX Sports
staff writer The Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team is poised to build off a 2011-12 season in which they finished 17-7-5 and claimed second place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with an 8-5-3 record. Returning for 2012-13 are 10 of their 11 top scorers, as well as 6’8” starting goalie John McLean. Leading the way for the Gusty scoring attack so far in 2012-13 are senior forward Ryan Johnson (5 goals, 5 assists in 12 games played) and sophomores Jack Walsh (4 goals, 2 assists, 12 games played) and Tyler Lapic (3 goals, 3 assists, 10 games played). In order to put up similar results to a year ago this offense will need to pick it up at some point in the season, including on the power play. Through 12 games this year,
Gustavus is scoring at a below-standard 12.2 percent clip (5 for 41) with the man advantage. When compared to last year, this year’s squad is only one shot per game below their average. The biggest factor to the less-efficient scoring is the power play. Gustavus was lethal last year, scoring on more than 21 percent of their power play opportunities. That nine percent difference in just one season is a huge reason why this team is scoring just 2.33 goals per game this season, while they scored 3.03 in 2011-12. Although they are not in as bad of shape as the offense thus far, the defensive unit also has some tightening up to do. The team is being outshot by a total of 26 shots on goal so far, or three shots per game. The defense has also been relatively quiet in the box score. Junior Alex
Gallen leads all defensemen on the team with points, 4, while senior Andrew Peterson has three points with a goal and two assists. All in all, the blue-liners have surrendered just two goals per game, and have done enough to hold up their end of the bargain. Any team allowing just two goals has a chance to win on any given night. In net, all three goaltenders have started four games apiece. Sophomore Patrick Sullivan has put up the best numbers with a .949 save percentage and an exceptional 1.72 goals against average (GAA). Sophomore John McLean, who was the team’s primary goalie a year ago, has a .936 save percentage and 1.84 goals against. Senior Tyler Venne, who has played the most minutes between the pipes so far, has a .913 save percentage

Maple River looks to get back atop of Valley Conference After last season's hiatus of first place in the Valley Conference, the Maple River Eagles and their 11 seniors look to get back in the top spot ADAM KRIESEL
staff writer
Maple River boy’s basketball coach Chad Ostermann is eager to get the 2012-13 season underway, and it is easy to see why. Ostermann’s Eagles have 11 seniors returning from last year’s team who finished 20-8, including a 10-1 conference record. “I think our biggest assets will be the players that gained valuable experience last year,” Ostermann said. “We have 11 seniors and that will help a lot. We also have two players coming back from ACL injuries a year ago. That seems to be going great, so that will also help.” What will not help, however, is the loss of a key senior class. Led by Josiah Breiter, Clark Minks and Garret FitzSimmons, the 2011-12 Eagles made a deep playoff run. The four-year production of Minks and FitzSimmons along with three years from Breiter will be hard to replace, and the first-year varsity players will need to step up and provide the
depth needed throughout the long season. “Those guys are a big loss, but we have capable players that can step into new roles,” Ostermann said. “They may not have as much experience, so they will have to make up for it with hard work and determination.” Perhaps the biggest storyline heading into this season is the return of the injured Jaron Denn. Denn was a big reason for last season’s 10-0 start before going down with a torn ACL. Now a senior, Denn, along with the 10 other seniors, will need to provide consistency while also staying healthy. “A big concern is to stay injury free,” Ostermann said. “Last season we had a multitude of injuries and it affects the whole team. If we can avoid injury, that would also help our season.” Similar to every year, Ostermann expects a lot of teams to be battling for a Valley Conference title this year. Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial is the early season favorite, while Loyola, St. Clair and Martin
County West, along with the Eagles, are not far behind. Maple River is the usual favorite take the Valley Conference when it comes to men’s basketball, but were denied a third-straight conference championship last season at the hands of Lake CrystalWellcome Memorial, when the Knights took down the Eagles 69-50 in the third-last game of the season, giving the Eagles one loss in conference play to push them back into second place where they would remain for the rest of the year. Maple River has also taken the Valley Conference in four of there past seven seasons, which includes three trips to the Minnesota class AA boy’s basketball tournament Maple River kicks off the season against Cannon Falls in the Maple River Hardwood Classic on Dec. 7. Tough earlyseason opponents like United South Central and Martin County West will give the Eagles the competition needed to get off to a fast start.

East girls hoops prime and ready to repeat No one on the Mankato east girls basketball team can forget last season's upsetting loss to Hutchinson in the section finals, but the Cougars return their two stars from last season, making everyone on the east side of town ready for some basketball? TIM FAKLIS
staff writer
Sometimes, a fresh face at the coaching realm is what it takes to jumpstart a team. Other times, however, having a familiar face that has shown numerous years of success is all you need. That is the case at Mankato East High School, and their ninth-year head coach Mike Barger. With a solid group of players a year ago, and a great group of them coming back again this year, the Mankato East Cougars have their eyes set on that illustrious and elusive state championship that would be won on the famous Target Center arena floor. They showed shades of potential of doing that a year ago. Finishing at a very impressive 26-3 mark, Coach Barger and his team only had one thorn that just couldn’t seem to figure out all season, that being the Hutchinson
Tigers, who managed to beat them twice, including a state section title game. That set it up for the Tigers to make it all the way to that same State Tournament that most teams can only dream of getting to. “I thought our team last season was playing its best basketball, we lost in the section final to Hutchinson in a very close game,” Barger said. “Our section was tough with four top-10 teams in the state in it. Our 18-0 conference record was a great run; we were focused on winning each game and never looked ahead. Good teams focus on the next opponent.” This year has all the makings to be even better than the year prior, with two All-State players returning: Minnie Frederick for her senior season, and Claire Ziegler for her junior campaign. That concept alone, the idea that two All State players are coming back to East for
another season, is exciting the entire school, and is bringing some positive vibes for what everyone is hoping to be a great season for the Cougars. Along with their two stars, Mankato East also has an impressive supporting cast of seniors that, according to Coach Barger, are all ready to take on a leadership role needed to win a championship, those seniors being Abby Connell, Mandy Smith, Carolyn Osdoba, Bria Armstrong, Hannah Whitington, and Marta Anderson. The players are in place, but coach Barger knows that nothing is given to you in a league as competitive as the Big 9. “Our expectations would be to get better as the year goes on.” Barger said. “We have some very talented players but if you don't work hard,

New Surroundings: Mankato Loyola's new identity in the Valley Conference The Mankato Loyola boys basketball team had success last year in the Gopher Conference, but 2012-2013 brings in a new life in the Valley Conference, which offers some of the toughest competition in the area on the hardwood. Experience in a game like high school basketball is of the utmost importance. The best teams are almost always fronted by a top-notch group of seniors that have played together for years that far precede high school. Head coach Tim Anderson and the rest of Mankato Loyola Catholic High School Crusaders are trying to be an exception to this rule as they come into an interesting year with their roster situation. Finishing at an impressive and respectable 18-8 last year, they return with a slew of juniors, but only a pair of seniors, those two being team captains Evan Ellingworth and Connor Tanhoff. Head coach Tim Anderson still has faith his team can
get it done, but recognizes the challenges that lie ahead. “We will have a very inexperienced team coming back this year,” Anderson said. The Crusaders finished last season well, along with an 11-5 finish in the Gopher Conference. They will be making a switch over to the Valley Conference this year and will be facing off more often with the likes of teams, such as defending conference champion Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, and also close finishers Maple River and GranadaHuntley-East Chain. “As a coach I expect our Loyola players to play hard, play smart, and to be coachable.” Anderson said. “If we can do that we will all have a very fun and successful season.”
Along with Ellingworth and Tanhoff, Carson Seifert joins them as yet another captain on a roster that hasn’t played too much together, along with a couple other limitations that the coaching staff will have to address. “The outlook for this year’s team will depend on how we handle inside playing on offense and defense.” Anderson said, explaining a strategy that can make or break a team at times. “We are a very small team but do have some quickness to make up for lack of height.” The combination of the size issue, along with the lack of senior leadership can lead to one of two things: It can lead to success of a group of somewhat unfamil-

MSU hoops begins LeSueurseason ranked fourth Henderson hopes in Northern Sun change in Intercollegiate Conference coach will lead to victories
The Minnesota State, Mankato women's basketball team is looking for a fantastic season with a high preseason ranking and the return of junior forward Alli Wilkinson. REECE HEMMESCH
sports editor
The Minnesota State University, Mankato women’s basketball team is off to a quick, 4-0 start to their 2012-2013 campaign, one that the Mavericks hope will bring them back to their prominence that was displayed just four years ago, when the Mavericks ended their season as national champions of Division 2 basketball. So though no one is left from that squad, MSU is still hoping that one of those seasons could be right around the corner for the Mavericks. Last season’s squad finished it’s tenure 18-11 overall on the season, with a 13-9 record in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which placed them sixth in the final conference standings at the end of the year. This season, the Mavericks come into the NSIC preseason coaches poll ranked fourth overall in the 16-team conference and are projected to finish second in the south division, behind the Augustana Vikings, who received 15 first place votes in the conference rankings and are backed behind senior forward Alex Feeney, the south division preseason player of the year. The player to watch this year for the purple and gold will be junior forward Ali Wilkinson, who medically redshirted last season and is looking to get back in full swing on the court. Two seasons ago Wilkinson led all Mavericks scores with 12 points-per-game and more than nine rebounds-per-game with 12 double-doubles on the season. MSU will be counting on the Wisconsin native to lead the squad on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball in the upcoming season. The Mavericks began their season’s crusade with a great showing in the Northern State Tournament, where MSU went 2-0 in the process, defeating opponents Black Hills State and the South Dakota School of Mines by scores of 91-60 and 79-66 respectively. Sophomore guard Aubrey Davis led the charge in the first win over Black Hill State by scoring 17 points and tallying
nine assists. Junior Guard Karlee Gengenbacher also chipped in offensively with 13 points and Wilkinson found 11 in her first game back with the team after her injury. The game two win over the South Dakota School of Mines saw Wilkinson take over the scoring once again as she shot 50 percent from the field and ended the night with 16 points and an astonishing 18 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Davis and Gengenbacher entered the scoring charts in double-digits once again as well with 13 and 10
respectively. After their impressive run in Aberdeen, S.D., MSU returned home for their final non-conference bout of the regular season to take on Gusatvus Adolphus. The game would not even be a contest, as MSU walked out of the Taylor Center 3-0 with a 93-56 win. It was an even scoring attack for the victory over the Golden Gusties as MSU recorded four players in double digits to finish out the game. Wilkinson once again led the way with 15, along

The Giants' boys basketball team struggled last year to say the least, but new head coach Don Marcussen brings in a fresh spirit to the new squad. JOEY DENTON
staff writer
With a not so pleasant season last year, finishing 6-20, the LeSueur-Henderson boys’ basketball team has decided to go a new direction by hiring Don Marcussen as their new head basketball coach. With some of the varsity experience a lot of players already have and with a clean slate, the team looks at a year of improvement. Last season, the Giants started out pretty average with four victories in their first nine games, with wins against Blue Earth Area (56-52), Jordan (81-48) and Montgomery-Lonsdale (66-55). Through the middle of the season, the Giants just
couldn’t get the wins as they dropped nine of the next ten games, including losses to Cannon Falls (5637) and Watertown-Mayer (83-49). Both teams won at least 20 games last season. It was the same near the end of the season, until their year was over after their 59-39 loss to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/ Cannon Valley Lutheran in the first round of sections. Once the season ended, the Giants were ranked 13th in the section and 94th in class AA. A new coach means new life, and head coach Marcussen believes the team has some talent on the perimeter. “We have decent guard play but we’re still kind of young,” Marcussen said.

The Bethany Lutheran womens basketball team is coming off a playoff appearance a year ago, and head coach Tiffany Young Klockziem is eager to repeat that success. That is a realistic goal considering that this team only graduated two players from last year, forwards Jessica Englund and Anna Cepek. “Part of filling those missing spots was done last year, in that Anna and Jess were instrumental in helping the new players learn the ropes,” Young Klockziem said. “With such great leaders last year, it’s no wonder
that this year we have strong captains once again.” Those new captains for this season are seniors Kelsie Ammann, Amanda Edmison and Sarah Rosenau, along with junior Jade Pelzl. According to Young Klockziem, each player brings a much-needed skill set to the table. “Kelsie [Ammann] is the organizer and a calming presence on the floor,” Young Klockziem said. “Amanda is the firecracker. She brings intensity and shows a true love of the game, which is a great example for everyone around her. Sarah is always looking to take care of the team on and off the court, is com-
pletely unselfish and has a great outside shot, too. And Jade is the quiet leader, always leading by example and is the commander on the floor.” Given the qualities of the captains alone, it appears that this team has all the right pieces in place. Another aspect the Vikings have going for them is multiple scoring threats. Through four games, the team has produced four different leading scorers, making it tough for opponents to lock in on a specific player. “Every year we adapt to the strengths and weakness of our team,” Young Klockziem said. “This year, I would say our biggest strength so far has been our balance. Different players have been stepping up when we needed them.” The coaching staff is also looking for this team to step up the intensity on defense, also. This is a team filled with exceptional speed, and Young Klockziem wants to take advantage of that by playing “attack defense.” “We will try to make the most of our speed and pressing ability,” Young Klockziem said. “Great defense can propel the offense, so I’m really looking forward to see what the team will accomplish in that regard.” Consistency will be a huge factor in determining the team’s overall success, and after four games, it is easy to see why. The Vikings are 1-3 following a three-point loss to Buena Vista, and were roughed up in the Cornell Tournament, losing to Cornell by 33 and Luther by 16. If anything, the early-season struggles should motivate the team heading into the conference portion of the schedule. “Success is measured not only by how far you get, but also by what you overcame to get there,” Young Klockziem said. “So we prepare for the journey every day by working hard in practice, by improving and learning from mistakes.” The road back to the

All three net minders have compiled very respectable numbers in their shared time, and if there was a competition to claim the starting job, it appears to still be in full swing as no one has separated themselves yet. Looking ahead, the offense will need to get out of their slump sooner or later.
The goalies and defense are putting together winning numbers, but the forwards have been slacking in the goal-scoring department. If the power play scoring efficiency can improve, this team should have no problem repeating the success of 2011-12.

If we do that, the rest will take care of itself.” That is a philosophy that the coaching staff plans on instilling on the first day of practice, and onward. There has been a steady but definite level of improvement, especially over the past couple years, both of which have resulted in losses to Hutchinson, and their hope this year is to get over the hump, and make it further than they have the past couple of years. “My standards haven't changed since I took over nine years ago. Play tough
to the end of every game, play better at the end of the season than at the beginning and make sure we have fun during the journey.” Barger said, explaining his general philosophy as head coach of the Cougars for yet another season. “Most of these girls have been playing for three-plus years, they know our coaching staff has high expectations.” High expectations, combined with a talented team leads to an impression that success will be had, and it’s up to the players to get that done.

Knights will rely on guard play to bring them another conference crown The Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial boy's basketball has a few guards in store that are looking to bring the Knights back to prominence after last season's Valley Conference crown. JOEY DENTON
staff writer
After finishing 21-7 last season, the Lake CrystalWellcome Memorial boys basketball team plans on taking all the progress they made and adding more to their 2012-2013 campaign. With 20 regular season wins, the team forged through the first round of their sub sectionals, and then lost in the second round in a hard fought battle to no. 9 Montevideo, 66-47. According to the school website, the knights finished their season second of 16 in their section and 11th of 123 in class AA. The team started their season off strong with a nine-game winning streak right out of the gate with wins against New Ulm (7649), Cleveland (74-49) and Mankato Loyola (61-58). After their first loss of the season to Fairmont (4948), it ignited a three game losing streak to St. Croix Lutheran (82-49) and Saint Peter (75-39). Combined, all three of those teams had a record of 73-14 at the end of last season. The Knights went back to their winning ways as they cruised their schedule and found themselves on another nine- game winning streak with wins against Maple River (5346) and Jordan (66-41). The Knights would finish last season atop the Valley Conference with an 11-0 record in conference play, knocking the mighty Maple River Eagles off of their Valley Conference throne, denying Maple River a three-peat in conference titles. Through the rest of the season, the Knights had their ups and downs until ending their season to Montevideo. As the team looks to this season, there are a lot of familiar faces coming back as the team only lost
one of their five starters, including their two leading scorers in Bryson Yackel and Michael Coates. Yackel averaged 17 points a game and Coates put in 15 of his own and grabbed seven rebounds a night. To head Coach Garrett Ulrich, their squad has some great guard play, but he is anxious to see if his team can control the boards. “We are more guard orientated, so I’m curious to see if we can rebound,” Ulrich said. Rebounding is one of the team’s weaknesses
coming to this season, along with their size and defense. Coach Ulrich wants to try to take teams out of rhythm. “Hopefully we can put ball pressure on other teams,” Ulrich said. Some of the strengths the Knights possess are their experience and their ability to put the ball in the basket as they averaged 65 points a game, which is pretty good for a high school squad. With the boys being able to hit the shots when
MSU Hockey “While many lamented the loss of some of college hockey's premiere programs to presumably greener pastures, MSU went to work." continued from 3 With such a wealth of young talent at his disposal, its no surprise that Mike Hastings’ new-look Mavericks are expected to become contenders next season, as many of the league’s leading powers vacate a conference that has been arguably college hockey’s most elite for the past few decades. The team will trade weekly mix-ups with Minnesota, North Dakota and Denver for tilts with Bowling Green and Ferris State; MSU however, appears to be ready for the change. The Mavericks have rebounded from a slow start, and currently sit in a threeway tie for fifth-place with
North Dakota and Colorado College, just two points back of second-place Minnesota, and five points behind leagueleading Denver. And with a second-half that includes a tour of the WCHA’s current bottom half, including last place Alaska-Anchorage, alongside Minnesota Duluth and Michigan Tech, the Mavericks have put themselves in a promising position entering the season’s second full month. While it is still to early to declare the Mavericks homeice favorites come March, the last season of the current WCHA could prove to be one of the Maverick’s most promising.

MSU alum brings in new leadership to Nicollet girls' hoops Former Minnesota State University standout Jennie Noreen just could not give up on the game of basketball, so Nicollet High School has her running the squad as the new head coach for the Raiders girl's basketball team. JOEY DENTON
staff writer
With a mediocre 2011-2012 campaign, the Nicollet girls basketball team is looking for a new image, starting with hiring a new head coach in Jennie Noreen. The Raiders finished their season with some costly injuries towards the end, and their offseason started after their loss to Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 80-78. With their 2012-2013 season coming up, the Raiders decided to go a new route by hiring coach Noreen. Noreen is a former Minnesota State University, Mankato basketball player who couldn’t call it quits for the game after her eligibility ran out at MSU. “I wasn’t ready to hang up my basketball shoes,” Noreen said. The Avon, Minn. native went to her coach and asked how she can still be part of the game of basketball and her coach referred her to the Nicollet school district as they were looking for a new girls’ basketball head coach. After a few weeks of practice, coach Noreen noticed this squad knows how to play defense, it’s the offensive side they needed to touch up on. “We need to work on taking care of the ball. We make up for it on the defensive end, but we give up easy buckets if we keep turning the ball over,” Noreen said. With her basketball background, dating back to her dad coaching her in grade school, she has put her team to the test by installing the 1-3-1 defense to throw other teams for a loop. “In high school, we ran the 1-3-1, and it worked against high school teams. Most schools haven’t seen that look and it catches them off guard,” Noreen said. Noreen gives a lot of credit to her team for learning a whole new system in such a short time. It’s difficult for any athlete to adjust to new coaches coming in and she knows that. “They have a lot on their plate right now. They’re learning a whole new offensive system and defensive system. They are learning quickly and they’re doing well right now,” Noreen said.
Offensively, the Raiders possess some talented shooters and have no problem getting the ball up in the air. “I have some great outside shooters, three pure three-point shooter,” Noreen said. “Those are high numbers for a high school team, and we use that to our advantage.” Senior forward Katelyn Skrien possesses a lot of skill sets for the Raiders, giving the team options offensively. “She can do it all. She can bring up the ball. She can be a wing, and I have her guarding
the post sometimes and run the post in our offense,” Noreen said. A lot of high school teams have problems bringing the ball up the court, or finding players that can do it by themselves, but the Raiders are fortunate to have such a player in senior point guard Courtney Struss. “She’s an excellent ball handler. She can drive where we are trying to get more plays in for her to take it to the hole,” Noreen said.

LeSueur-Henderson Basketball “With a not so pleasant last year, finishing 6-20, the LeSueur-Henderson boys' basketball team has decided to go a new direction by hiring Don Marcussen as their new head basketball coach" continued from 16 Some the weaknesses on the squad, according to Marcussen, are the players height and depth at the post position, which is quite normal for high school teams. With the season just starting, Marcussen noticed there aren’t any superstars on the squad, but all of them bring something to the team and are needed. “We don't have any one exceptional player,” Marcussen said. “We will need all of them to contribute one way or another.” One of the coach’s tasks in their first few weeks of practice was to pick some captains who are going to lead this squad, and he chose senior guard Matt Reinhart and junior guard Brady Rose. Reinhart was a part-time starter last year who is confident in his ball handling and shooting skills. And Rose feels he knows what it means to be a team leader. Looking at their schedule, Marcussen, with it being his first year coaching the Giants, doesn’t believe
there is a game to circle on the calendar and that all the games are equally important. “We look forward to all of them,” Marcussen said. “I haven't really talked to the guys to find out who their rivals are in basketball.” The Giants play their first game of the season on Dec. 4th with the team that ended their year last season, Waterville-ElysianMorristown/Cannon Valley Lutheran. One of their tougher opponents they face this season is just a week later when Saint Peter comes to town. The Saints finished last season 27-2. This game will give Marcussen and the Giants a true test to know where the team is at. At the beginning of 2013, the Giants host Watertown-Mayer on Jan. 8th. Watertown-Mayer finished their season with a 28-3 record. They will rematch them again on Feb. 8th at Watertown-Mayer.

Working hard in an attempt to win a game of basketball; seems simple enough, right? It’s a philosophy that some seem to forget about when attempting to come up with the perfect strategy to win a game, and instead trying to come up with the most intricate play possible, to outsmart and outcoach the opposition. In the case of the Blue Earth Area High School Buccaneers boys basketball squad, and their new head coach Randy Kuechenmeister, that’s the route that they plan to take, coming into another winter session of basketball in the South Central Conference. Last year was a tough one for the Bucs, finishing at a
7-17 mark, and fourth in the South Central. “I thought last year’s team played very hard,” new head coach Randy Kuechenmeister said. “We had some key injuries throughout the season. We were in a lot of games just had trouble being consistent.” Returning to Blue Earth Area High School are five players, including four seniors in Dallas Barslou, Isaac Darrington, Brandyn Olsen and Steven Plocker, as well a one junior in Luke Monson, the only upper classmen who will be playing center this year for the Buccaneers. Like any first-year head coach, Randy Kuechenmeister has a tall task at-hand, and wants to get off to as solid of a start as possible, but if that’s even going to be considered
down the road, it all has to start with a level of effort, a level similar to that of last year, but, they hope, with better results in the win-loss column. “Our expectations for the seniors are to be leaders and play hard.” Kuechenmeister said. “The expectations are to play hard, play together and improve throughout the season.” All of these ideas are simple concepts that have an underrated level of effectiveness on athletes, especially amateur athletes, and especially high school-level athletes. Considering the number of seniors who left the team versus the number of players coming back for another year at Blue Earth Area, the
St. Peter Wrestling
hope among students, players, coaches, and fans alike are that improvement can be quick and immediate, to the point where they can compete on a level that they were able to, similar to the 2009-10 season, when they finished an extremely impressive 23-5. Only three years ago, but in a sport like high school basketball, three years can completely change the landscape of a team. In this case, not only did the difference in players change, but there also at the coaching helm. Coach Kuechenmeister has expectations, and those have been established, but how will that get done? What do the players need to do to get back on track? “Our team wants to be more consistent this year.”
Kuechenmeister said, explaining the goals that his team had set for the year. “We have to find what we do well and improve on that throughout the year. We want to play as well as we can.” If that is going to be done, it will take the one thing that the coaching staff has been preaching since he took over: working hard. It’s not always easy to get a group of high schoolers to buy into a concept that most of the working class adapt to on an everyday basis, especially when that team had so many struggles to put up wins the year before, but sometimes a new coach is all it takes to get everything back on track, and odds are this coaching staff will work hard to get just that done.

But the team makes up for it in the middle weights, with guys such as Bosacker and Bartlett. “Our middle weights return some decent wrestlers,” Hanson said. Their next match is on Dec. 11, as they take on Maple River at Maple River, and some of the bigger matches down the road are Mankato West on Jan. 5th, 2013 at home, Waconia on Jan. 29th at home and their last match against Saint James Area at home on Feb. 1st. Looking at the schedule, Coach Hanson knows there is going to be competition in the conference. “The SCC schedule will be pretty competitive,” Hanson said. Southern Minnesota is predominantly known in the winter months as a wrestling powerhouse, as many small schools such as St. Peter rank among the tops in the state and load the gym everywhere they go for their matches. Other wrestlers that coach Hanson believes will be on the varsity squad are junior Cody Kurth (14-19), junior Collin Thompson (24-16), sophomore Baily Kurth (6-12) and senior Bennett Baker (4-4). Baker broke his leg in the team’s first tournament of the year and had to sit out the rest of the season.

With four seniors on the roster this season, coach Noreen appointed the four of them as team captains. Seniors Kayla Giefer and Carissa Woller join Skrien and Struss as the Raiders’ captains. With two games already in the books, the team stands at 1-1 with a 49-36 victory over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial and losing 73-67 to Minnesota Valley Lutheran. Looking down the road
the Raiders have circled some matchups they have been looking forward to, such as when St. Clair comes to town on Dec. 6th. Their squad possesses a good coaching staff and returning players and the Raiders are excited to see if they can size up with them. Another game to look forward to is Mankato Loyola coming on Jan. 22. With Loyola being a run and gun team, just like the Raiders, it will be a good matchup.
LC-WM Basketball continued from 18 needed, coach Ulrich wants to see the team be more consistent on their shooting. “We also want to be a more consistent shooting team,” Ulrich said. The 2012-2013 Knights started their season off right with a home win against New Ulm 73-56. Looking down the road, the Knights have circled some
of the teams they have been waiting to play. On Dec. 15th the team heads to Fairmont, who finished last season 21-6. Another game the team has been waiting for is when Worthington comes to town on Jan. 3rd. The Knights come to Mankato to take on Mankato Loyola five days later, who finished 16-8 last season.

Another year, another season at Minnesota State University, Mankato for head coach Eric Means and his Maverick womens hockey team. Last year was a tough one for the Mavericks, and one that they would probably like to forget at this point, but a new year marks a new opportunity for the Mavs to show that they belong with the rest of the WCHA, and that they are a part of the upper class of the Division 1 college hockey ranks. Head coach Eric Means has all the experience necessary to make it happen. Entering his fourth season as head coach of the Mavericks, he also spent thirteen years as an assistant coach to the MSU men’s squad. A defenseman at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1994, during his collegiate playing career, Means was a member of a few Gopher teams that claimed one league regular season and two playoff titles, and also made it to the NCAA postseason tournament from 1989-94. He redshirted during the 1990-91 season, but was selected to play for Team USA at the World University Games. He accumulated eight goals and 40
points in 123 games with the Gophers and as a senior received the Doc Romnes Leadership and Sportsman Award. He’s been around for quite some time, and wants to bring that level of experience to the team this year. “We never fully matured as a team,” Means said, speaking on his team from the 2011-12 campaign. “We had individuals that had good seasons, but as a team we never reached what we could have been.” The Mavericks finished with a 7-28-1 record to end last season, a mark that nobody in Mavnation was hoping to see. With that said, there were still some good individual performances by the likes of Lauren Smith and Jackie Otto, among others. The Mavericks have a good set of seniors this year that they’re hoping will be able to lead them to a record much better than a year ago. Smith, who can score with the best of them, is a good athlete, and should be able to help the Mavs from the get-go this season. Emilia Andersson and her passing skills should be able to compliment Smith very well, and their chemistry, after working together for some time now, should be apparent as the season goes on. Lauren Zrust and Erika Magnusson round out the MSU
senior class, and they will be looked at to contribute quite a bit and log a lot of minutes all season, as they continue to improve their games as well. Junior goaltender Danielle Butters has also shown promise and some skills around the net, and will be handling most of the duties at goalie for the Mavericks this season. So far this season, the Mavs are off to another shaky start, beginning the season at a 5-10-3 record. With that said, they are off to a slightly better start than a year ago, and want to keep pressing on, and hopefully get back to the level of winning that coach Means knows they can get to. “My expectation is to win more games this year than any other year in program history,” Means said. “Our players set the team goals last spring and have worked hard to achieve them.” His plans for this season are simple and to the point. “Practicing hard every day, taking care of our business and not worrying about others or other teams.” Most coaches would agree that’s the right stance to take after a year like last year. If the players can adapt to it, wins could come back to All Seasons Arena and for the Mavericks.

St. Clair brings back big numbers from last season in hopes of taking the Valley Conference by storm You don't have to remind the St. Clair boys' basketball team and head coach Charlie Frietag about the Cyclones' lowly record last season, which is why everyone involved in St. Clair basketball is working that much harder to return the Cyclones to prominence once again.

staff writer In just his second season as the St Clair Cyclones head coach, Charlie Freitag has high expectations for his boys’ varsity basketball squad, and he may just have the team to achieve some goals that they have set for themselves. Finishing at an 8-15 mark doesn’t necessarily mean that last year was a lost cause, and in fact, it may set them up better for success a year from now.
“I thought last year’s team overcame a lot of adversity throughout the year.” Freitag said. “Though we did not win as many games as we thought we should have, it was a growing year for our underclassmen and a year that many life lessons were learned. With last year being my first as the head coach I thought our kids adapted to a slightly different way of playing and took steps toward being a very competitive team.” The Cyclones are returning
a solid group from their team last year, including junior forward Ryan Kruse, who put up 19 points and 9 rebounds per game last year as a sophomore in the Cyclones’ starting five. Along with Kruse is a good supporting cast of seniors, including the Cyclones starting running back duo of the football team in the fall, Mike Nett and Miklo Miller. “I feel that they will help calm the waters when needed this season and really be the key defensively for us,” Freitag said concerning his defensive anchors. The main man in the middle this year will be starting center Kaleb Lehmann. His job will be to take up space in the middle on defense, instill toughness into an already pretty tough roster, and be a leader on the floor. Rounding out the senior class will be guard Dylan Prange and post presence Philip Lonneman. It’s not just the seniors that will be carrying the load for them this season. Junior Tyler Fandrich came on late last year as a sophomore, and is now in the starting lineup for coach Freitag. “He can flat-out shoot the rock,” Frietag said in description of his young guard. The future, considering the talent he has in front of him, looks promising, and the hope and idea is to improve vastly from a year ago, and perhaps make some noise in tournament play. “We worked the entire summer on getting better offensively. We spent a lot of time in the gym shooting, and shooting some more; both that and becoming quicker defensively so that we can play better man to man defense. Our program is based on playing tough defense but then running the floor and putting a lot of pressure on the opposing defense,” Frietag said. The strategy is in place, the players are in place, and the coach is in place. The level of optimism seems to be up from a year ago. It’s tough to go from a losing record to a successful season, but at the same time, all you really need is the proper personnel to get something of that nature done,
and it is very possible that this group of players will have it. “We talked a lot a year ago about not wasting the chances that we are given,” Freitag said. “We have a chance to go out and use what abilities and skills we have twenty six times this year and we don't want to waste those opportunities. We don't need to be the best, we just need to do what we do the best we can and we will have a lot of success.” The message is clear: if you’re motivated and work
hard, you can get to where you want to be. It seems like a simple message, but it will be up to the players to carry out that message. The Cyclones have already started to get the program back to where it could be in their 2012-2013 campaign, by defeating Randolph 69-34 in their first game of the season. From there the Cyclones will next be in action,Thursday Dec. 6th as the Mavericks of Martin County West come to town.

MSU wrestling set to begin season ranked no. 13 nationally The Mavericks might have struggled in last seasons bouts, but this year a set of fresh faces is all MSU needs to compete with the best in the NSIC.
Bethany Basketball continued from 17 postseason will be a tough one this year, but one that Young Klockziem strongly believes is achievable. Minnesota-Morris is the preseason favorite in the conference, and the level playing field should make for an entertaining season. “Our conference is very competitive, so almost any
team can beat another on any given night,” Young Klockziem said. This team has the potential to be very dangerous if and when they find their consistency. All the pieces are there, it is now time to produce results on a nightly basis.
MSU Basketball continued from 16
with sophomore forward Jamie Bresnahan who also tallied 15 and junior guard Alli Hoefer put up 14 points with 10 assists on the night. From there MSU began their quest to the top of the NSIC stage with a win over Concordia St. Paul, 85-66, in their first conference game. It was once again Wilkinson who led the charge with 22 points this time around as MSU shot over 50 percent in the game to achieve the victory and put the team to a 4-0 start. From here the Mavericks will host a pair of NSIC games this weekend when Winona State
and Upper Iowa come to town, but the big story will be in about a month when the Mavericks head to Sioux Falls, S.D. on Jan. 4th to take on the highly-touted Augustana Vikings, a game with serious NSIC implications in both the entire league and the south division. If the Mavericks can stay hot during their stretch of games over the winter break and possibly knock off the Vikings early in 2013, the floodgates could open on this squad and MSU could see themselves towards the top of the conference at the end of the season.

The highly regarded Minnesota State University, Mankato Division II wrestling program has begun their season and looks to improve from last year’s disappointing run. Last year’s dual match record of 5-9 and 3-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference is one that a not common for the MSU wrestling program. The Mavericks will look to rebound from a season last year that was not characteristic of the program at MSU. MSU’s wrestling program has been a top ten program nearly half of the years it existed and has housed many national champions. In 1950, Rummy Macias started the program and the tradition of a great wrestling program at MSU. Macias coached 38 years and had more than 300 wins throughout his coaching career. From the start of wrestling in Minnesota, the MSU program has been important to the growth of wrestling throughout the state. The program is now led by head coach Jim Makovsky who owns a 249-107-4
career record and has carried on the tradition that Macias started. “If you go back to the roots of it, and then even the birth of high school wrestling in the state of Minnesota our program has had a huge impact,” Makovsky said. “As far as active division 2 programs we have the second most national champs, the most dual meet wins and the most all Americans.” Makovsky hopes to get back to the programs core values this year and believes that in doing so the team will have a much better season this year. “I am excited to get back to our principles and that’s getting hard work and tough kids that take pride not only representing themselves but representing MSU in front of their singlet,” Makovsky said. “We have that right now.” The team is much different this year with only a few wrestlers returning from last year’s team and 19 new members on the squad, but the young team will look for leadership from the returning wrestlers as many make a transition from high school to college. “The beginning of the season is always exciting but there is
a little nervousness because of the uncertainty with all the new faces,” Makovsky said. The freshman on the team can lean on returning AllAmericans David Demo and Cody Quinn for leadership. Demo finished the last year season with a 29-13 record and is ranked fourth at 125 lbs. by the Wrestling Coaches Association poll. In the same poll, Quinn is ranked third at 165 lbs. after finishing last year’s season with a 23-10 record. Both wrestlers also qualified for the NCAA Championship tournament and will be a contender to win the title this year. Entering the season, the Mavericks were ranked no. 13 nationally in the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association preseason poll. The wrestling team opened the season up with a match with Waldorf College, winning the match 33-6. The team followed that performance up with a dominant showing at the Luther College Open. The Mavericks next outing will be the UNI open Saturday, Dec. 8th were the mavericks will try to keep the momentum going with another win.

Mankato West looks to bury last season and start all over
2012 was not nice to the Scarlets girls hockey team, finishing the season 3-21. Even though West has struggled early in their new campaign, head coach Michael Sipe believes this team can do some damage in the Big 9.
TIM FAKLIS
staff writer
Sometimes, all it takes is a change at the top. That’s what the Mankato West girls hockey team is hoping for this year. After a dismal 3-21 campaign a year ago, the school decided to bring in a new face to coach the squad, going with Michael Sipe to attempt to fix what seemed to be a very difficult situation a year ago. Along with assistant coach Matt Carroll, the two of them are attempting to incorporate new styles of offense and defense, both of which will rely heavily on different sets of players of all different classes. Any team with that rough of a year is going to come up with more than one issue to explain their loss patterns from the year prior, but this year shows promise with a few players in particular. The team is led by a trio of seniors: Hanna Rehome, Sarah Blasing and Justine Scheller. “All three are solid young players who I will count on heavily.” Sipe said, describing his upper classmen crew, whom he expects a level of leadership and responsibility from the get-go. It’s not just the seniors,
Loyola Basketball “They (Loyola) will be making a switch over to the Valley Conference this year.” continued from 15 iar faces on the highest level of high school basketball, coming together, or it can lead to issue and problems. It will likely be up to Ellingworth, Tanhoff, Seifert, and the rest of a somewhat unfamiliar, yet experienced roster to come out and make things happen. Despite the fact that the team may not have a full level of experience at the college level, there is not one player on the roster lower than the level of junior. That alone should give the Crusaders an advantage. Not because they’re a higher average age than some teams, but simply because nearly the entire team is from the same graduating class, and most of them have likely played together for years. That level of chemis-
try is something that can be taken advantage of in a good way, and in a lot of cases, is something that most teams do not have the luxury of having to their team’s credit. Losing seven players can certainly hurt, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the new players won’t have the same level of camaraderie and ability to play together as an experienced unit. Coach Anderson has seen ups and downs with this program, and odds are tougher situations have walked through his door before. There is equal opportunity for either a good or a bad outcome to arise at the end of the season, and it will be up to the players to decide that fate.
• courtesy of SPX Sports
though. In fact, there’s a solid group of underclassmen that coach Sipe will have to equally rely on as the season progresses. Junior Callie Looft led the team in scoring as a sophomore, and she’s back to try to repeat her success again. Julia Snelson is another athlete that will be relied on heavily at the forward position. On defense, freshman Marissa Swenson has the big responsibility to attempt to anchor the Scarlets defensive first line. Her job is a unique one, as it has become somewhat of a rarity for freshmen to see time so early at the varsity level in a conference like the Big 9. Despite, as it has been mentioned, an extremely rough year last year, the fact that the Scarlets finished last does not have any bearing on what they can do this year. Just two years ago, the Mankato West hockey club finished third in the Big 9, with a 9-8 record on the season. For coach Sipe, that concept could be all it takes to get his team back on track and where he thinks it needs to be down the road; not just for this year, but for years to come as well. “We will try to build this team from the defenseman
out,” Sipe said. “We might struggle early to put the puck in the net so we'll have to be strong on the blue line.” His concepts stay true to the fundamentals, but they also ring true to what Scarlet hockey fans have been looking for in a coach. He wants his team to learn quickly and effectively, but also understands that it is a process with any high school sports team, and it might take some time for everyone to adapt on the offensive end. “I think the scoring will come,” Sipe said. “It is just a matter of feeling comfortable with our new systems.” The Scarlets season has begun, and thus far, it hasn’t looked too much better than the year before, starting at an 0-4 mark. With that said, the optimism for major improvement is there. With the coaching leadership of Mike Sipe, the talent of players like Rehome, Blasing, Seller, Looft and Snelson, there is plenty to be excited about in the world of girl’s hockey at Mankato West High School. The optimism isn’t just apparent through the fans, but also through their head coach. “There is nowhere to go but up.”

GAC and head coach Mark Hanson prime for another run at a national tourney berth The Golden Gusties men's basketball team is looking for a repeat as conference champions of the MIAC. TIM FAKLIS
staff writer
Coming off a conference title and a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament, the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties are looking to repeat the success they encountered a year ago, and possibly take it to another level. “We had a really good year with a conference championship and a bid to the national tournament.” Head coach Mark Hanson said, describing the 2011-12 season. “It is always disappointing to end with a loss but it was an excellent year nonetheless.” Finishing at a 20-8 mark, as well as a 16-4 record in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, where they tied with St. Thomas for first, this team’s plans without question include attempting to improve on last season. That could be a tough task for the Gusties, with a total of five seniors from a year ago now gone, including leading scorer Seth Anderson. Along with that, there are a lot of new faces that will be joining the Gusties locker room, with a grand amount of four freshmen and six sophomores. The five seniors for this year’s team include two captains, both hailing from Edina in Ben Biewen, the
second leading scorer for them a season ago, and also forward Jim Hill. “I hope we have a pretty balanced team, but we will need our experienced players, our seniors, to be consistent,” Hanson said. “Jim Hill, Ben Biewen, Blake Shay and Reed Sallstrom will be counted on regularly.” With the difference between the first place and second place leading scorer being more than 13 points per game a year ago, a new offensive strategy may need to be brought into place this year for any sort of repeat from a year ago. More than anything, however, like any college team, the first thing that needs to happen, before any strategy is put in place, is the idea of working hard and playing as a team. “I expect to compete hard every night.” Hanson said. “If we do the little things well along the way we should be in the battle the whole season.” The mark of a successful coach is if they’re able to stick around in their craft for a long time. Mark Hanson has been able to do just that. He is now in his 23rd year as head coach of the Gusties, and shows no signs of slowing down. Back in the 2002-03 season, his team was even able to
make it all the way to the final four, and finish second in the country. To this point, that elusive national championship remains out of grasp, but not out of possibility for coach Hanson and his team. To this point, he has an overall record of 422-185, including a 319-121 record in the MIAC, and has won the conference Coach of the Year award eight times. Along with all this, Hanson is also a 1983 Gustavus graduate and the basketball program's all-time leading scorer with 1,774 points. He was a two-time NAIA All-American and GTE Academic All-America selection, a three-time Gustie MVP and a four-time All-MIAC selection. His track record speaks for itself, and he has a team this year that he feels can represent him just as much as any other team he’s coached in the past. “We are constantly trying to improve all aspects of the game," Hanson said. "It is a lot of work to be a good team and it takes commitment and effort from everyone. We are always trying to push the envelope.” Working with this many underclassmen would certainly be pushing the envelope if they are able to equal their success to last year, and that is their goal.

I think we are going to depend on a little more scoring from the inside this year as compared to last year," said head coach Bob Southworth on his team this season. continued from 8
seniors in the backcourt, this is the area where the team’s inexperience could be exposed. Sophomores Logan Retzlaff and Marta Springer may need to mature quickly if they are given steady minutes in the rotation and relied on to run the offense. Another area for potential concern is team defense. With four new starters, the chemistry has not quite developed. Communication is the key to solid defense, and it remains to be seen if this new core can gel together well enough to play tough defense. All in all, Southworth is still confident in this team’s ability. “I think our team can compete for the conference title,” Southworth said. “The other teams in the conference who will also be competing for it are Blue Earth,
Waseca and Fairmont. Any one of us four realistically could win it.” Last year’s conference wasn’t too tight of one, as the South Central Conference only poses six teams in athletics. 2012 saw St. Peter taking the conference with a perfect 10-0 mark, followed by Blue Earth Area, who ended the season 8-2, with it’s only two conference losses coming at the hands of the Saints. The Saints also took home the SCC crown two years ago, finishing 9-1 in conference with their only loss coming from Fairmont. Southworth’s squad put up an astonishing 61.7 point-per-game last year, one of the main reasons for their success as that was eight points more than the second-best average, Fairmont, who scored around 53 a game.
The Saints five losses last season all came from ranked opponents, or opponents from a higher class of basketball and their season was ended last year in a tight, heartbreaking 59-54 loss at the hands of New Richland-H-E-G in the section championship. In order for St. Peter to take the conference, a lot of unknowns need to fall into place. Defense needs to step up, and they will need to consistently dominate the boards and post play in general. If they can manage to do that, as well as not turn the ball over, this team is capable of a repeat season. Given Southworth’s track record and the program’s recent success, it is by no means a stretch to see this team atop the conference standings by seasons end. • courtesy of SPX Sports
