Uncovered Wai-Kun

Midwestern State University

Through this edition of the Wai-Kun, the staff hopes to uncover the lives of MSU students. With the turn of each page, we believe that more insight is being given about the lives of the individual students that are represented. Some students express their uniqueness through campus activities, sports, organizations, or by going Greek.

Cowboys Stadium Mustangs Dominate Lions Students, Family and Alumi gathered at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas as Midwestern State opened the Lone Star Football Festival against Texas A&M Commerce on September 16, 2011. This was only the third neutral territory game the Mustangs have competed in since 1988. A&M Commerce got off to a quick start with a 73-yard drive ending in a touchdown within the first five minutes of the game. The Mustangs quickly recovered with a drive of their own to tie it up. The Mustangs did not take the lead until the second quarter, but once they did, the Lions would not take control again. MSU rolled through the second half to end the game with a 63-17 win making it the first neutral territory win since 1988. The event was celebrated, by fans, with tailgating at the stadium.

Fantasy of Lights

In the late 1920’s, Mr. and Mrs. L.T. Burns celebrated their first Christmas together by placing a Christmas tree on their porch, decorated with a single blue bulb ornament. Even though the gesture was small, it was very meaningful to the couple. As Mr. Burns became more successful in life, the two continued the tradition that begun during the first year of their marriage. Each year they set up more elaborate displays, even after the death of Mr. Burns. At the passing of Mrs. Burn in the 1970’s, the displays were left in the care of Archer City, who eventually turned the exhibits over to MSU so that the Christmas spirit of the Burns family could live on for the years to come. The community pulled together to refurbish the displays and during the 1974 Christmas season, they could finally be enjoyed by everyone in the area. Now, 20,000 lights are placed on MSU campus buildings and 34 displays are set up each year. With an estimated 200,000 visitors each year, it is safe to say the Burns’ Christmas spirit has lived on. 12
