When the staff of the Wai-Kun was deciding on a theme for

this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book, we had an assortment of ideas. We knew we wanted a theme focused on the fact that the 2006-2007 school year was the first full academic year that MSU would be known as the Mustangs. Not only is this the first full year for our staff, but it is the beginning of many firsts to come for Student life, sports, Greeks, organizations and academics. MSU Family Day was held on Saturday, September 23, 2006. MSU student and their family members had the oppurtunity to meet MSU faculty and staff, tour the campus, attend MSU atheletic events, and participate in many fun activities.

Homecoming events this year couldn’t keep students away. Despite a cancelled visit from film maker Wes Craven, students had plenty to talk about. This year’s activities included a rock climbing wall, “First Down” competition, 3-D flip photos and the opportunity to make your own dog tags. This year also included the traditional cardboard boat race, a banner competition, a fish fry by the Kiowa Kooks, a torchlight parade and a bonfire. Three brand new events were also introduced this year. One new event was the T-shirt exchange--a swap where students exchanged another university’s shirt for a new MSU shirt. All of the t-shirts collected were disposed of during the Homecoming bonfire. Another new event: Dude...it’s a Dance off! Students danced the night away, and eleven hours later, two students walked away victorious. The final inagural event, the Homecoming tailgate competition, drew over 1,000 students, family members and alumni to Memorial Stadium before the game. The week was complete when the Mustangs ran away with a win over Southeastern Oklahoma State, 33-23.

PlayBall The Mustangs played and won their first game at the new on-campus softball field, Mustangs Park, on Saturday, April 28. MSU softball played its first three seasons and most of this season at the Sunrise Optimist Softball Complex near the football field off of Southwest Parkway. The Mustangs’ head coach Brady Tigert said he and the team were happy to be on their new field. “We are thrilled to death to have this fine facility,” Tigert said. “I want to thank President Rogers and all the administration for their help in getting it. They let me design it and I hope they’re happy with the way it looks. I hope the community will enjoy the field as well.” Ed Harris, MSU director of athletics, is also proud of the new field. “It’s a very colorful and attractive field,” Harris said. “One we can all be proud of.” The field features MSU’s patended brick in the dugouts and on the backstop as well as seating for 1,000 people.

In 2006, the Midwestern State University Mustangs drew the number four seed in the Southwest Region to participate in the NCAA Division II Football Championships after a season full of impressive wins. By drawing the fourth seed, the Mustangs earned the right to host the first round of the championships. MSU then drew Missouri Western, the fifth seed. In the first round, MSU trailed 2614 with 5:09 to play after forcing Missouri Western to punt following a deep interception by the Griffons. MSU came back to beat Missouri Western 26-28 in a stunning display of continuous touchdowns. MSU also drew the largest crown in round one of the playoffs. Attendance was at an impressive 6,273. In the second round of playoffs, MSU faced number two ranked Northwest Missouri State. Unfortunately, the Northwest Missouri State University Bearcats did something that no team had done to Midwestern State University in 11 years, pitching a 27-0 shutout in the second round of the NCAA Division II Football Championships at Bearcat Stadium. MSU ended the season with an overall

2006 marked the 32nd anniver-

sary of the Fantasy of Lights display at MSU. The display was originally started by L.T. Burns in the1920’s in he and his wife, Lilian’s, yard. Every year their display attracted crowds of people. Lilian continued to set up the display after her husband’s death, serving hot chocolate and conversing with people as they passed. After Mrs. Burns passed away in 1971, the display was lef to Arche rCity then moved to MSU where it has remained. The Burns family allowed the display to come to MSU with one stipulation: that no one would ever be charged to see it. The Fantasy of Lights is paid for by donation only. Boxes are set up throughout the display and volunteers take donations from cars that pass by.

The 24th-ranked menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball team capped off a wild tournament ride March 3 in D.L. Ligon Coliseum by turning a season goal into a reality: Earn the right to be called Lone Star Conference champions. MSU (23-6) claimed its third conference championship in team history, disposing of No. 9 Southeastern Oklahoma State (25-4) 89-90 in front of 4,328 fans, while punching a ticket to Warrenburg, Mo., site of the regional quarterfinal game in the South Central Region of the NCAA Division II national tournament. MSU had plenty of help against SEOSU as six players scored in double-figures led by Chris Davis with 19 points and eight boards. MSU ranked no. 1

The May/June 2007 issue of Consumers Digest Magazine ranked Midwestern StateUniversity No. 1 under Best Values in Public Colleges and Universities. The magazine lists the top 100 best values based on attributes that validate or define the institutions’ academic prowess factored against annual cost of tuition and room-and-board. Final selections were chosen from approximately 3,800 U.S. schools. The rankings were based on the academic excellence of first-time freshmen at a school (standardized test scores, high-school rank, grade-point average) with the institution’s educational quality (4- and 6-year graduation rate, student-to-faculty ratio, percentage of faculty holding a PhD). The value-index score was factored with the cost of attending each school. The rankings were based on information from 2005-06, the latest school year for which data were available. “Expert opinions and solid recommendations are two of our strengths,” said Consumers Digest Publisher Randy Weber. “We applied those strengths to this examination of our country’s higher-learning institutions. It’s designed to help parents and students find schools that will meet families’ performance and financial requirements.” He also said that Consumers Digest’s analysis helps today’s families make an informed decision that “puts their hard-earned money to the best value.”

A Season to Remember

Records Broken. . . Playoffs Made. . .

Last year’s season ended too early for the MSU Mustangs football team. After making the playoffs in 2004 and then missing the 2005 post-season, this year’s team had nothing to lose and everything to prove. Players had one thing on their mind at the beginning of the season--to make the playoffs. The season got off to a quick and exciting start when the Mustangs won the first five games, including two wins by more than 30 points. Hopes of making the playoffs were within reach. However, the next two games tested the players both mentally and physically. A hard fought battle against West Texas A&M ended in the Mustangs’ first loss after a last minute interception by the Buffs sealed the 2927 score. A week later, the Mustangs took the field to avenge the defeat, but that was be easier said than done. In the loss against Tarleton State University, the Texans ran for 28 unanswered points, beating MSU 38-17. The Mustangs didn’t give up, however. The team went undefeated for the next four games to give them an edge in the standings. A win on the road against Abilene Christian ended the regular season, and MSU earned home-field advantage in the NCAA playoffs for the first time in 15 years. Then the Mustangs’ 28-26 win against Missouri Western was another record because MSU had never made it to the second round of the NCAA playoffs. Players pushed for records of their own as well. Both running back Ross Harrison and quarterback Daniel Polk gave their all to pass the career rushing record previously set by Dominic Rhodes in 2000. However, both came up shy--Ross by 123 yards and Polk by a mere 20. Either way, both individual players and the entire team had much to be proud of in 2006.

The MSU volleyball team made quite an impression on the Lone Star Conference during their 2006 season. The Mustangs placed four players on the 2006 Lone Star Conference North Division II All-Conference list and seven players on the Lone Star Conference All Academic North Team. Players on the LSC All-Conference list include junior middle blocker Krissa Johnson, sophomore setter Allison Schreiber, sophomore outsider hitter Shay Velasquez, and freshman middle blocker Sesley Graves. Johnson was named First Team All-Conferece, Schreiber ws named Second Team All-Conference, and Velasquez and Graves were named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Players on the LSC All Academic North Team are Ashley Godwin, Kim Doolittle, Rachel Gilmore, Krissa Johnson, Katie Guehler, Sandra Garcia, and Allison Schreiber. To make the All-Academic team, players must maintain a 3.20 grade point average and must be at least a sophomore. The Mustangs finished their volleyball season with a 5-7 conference record, and a 16-14 overall record.

MSU men’s soccer coach Doug Elder achieved many accomplishments this season. On Thursday, October 26, 2006, Elder gained his 100th career win when the Mustangs beat Eastern New Mexico 5-1. Elder has been the head coach of the team since 2000. He has an overall record of 10028-10, which gives him a 74.4 win percentage--the best win percentage of all MSU men’s soccer coaches. Elder is also fifth among active Division II coaches for win percentage. This season, Elder lead the Mustangs to a Southwest Soccer Conference regular season title as well as a Southwest Soccer Concerence tournament championship. Elder also was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Midwest Region Coach of the Year. The Mustangs held a 182-2 record this season.

MSU women’s soccer coach Jeff Trimble earned his 100th win as he lead the Mustangs to another winning season. In fact, the women have only had one losing season since Trimble took over as head coach in 1998. Along with an impressive season and a seed in the Lone Star Conference semi-finals, the Midwestern State University women’s soccer team placed 5 players on the Lone Star All-Conference team. Mustangs that were honored were Megan Bibilone and Melissa Brown for First-Team All Conference, Kari Bristow and Kelly Tanner were Second-Team All Conference, and Brittany Burney received Honorable Mention All-Conference. The Mustangs finished the season at 10-8-1, after a heartbreaking loss in the Lone Star Conference semi-finals to then number 16 ranked Central Oklahoma, 2-1 in overtime.

Midwestern State University’s Eric Dawson and Drew Coffman were named as members of the 2007 Daktronics, Inc. All-South Central Region Team announced March 6, 2007. Dawson, the 6-9 senior center from San Antonio/Sam Houston, was chosen first-team. Coffman, the 6-2 senior guard from Midland/Lee was selected to the second team. The team is selected by the sports information directors of the Division II schools in the South Central Region and sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged world leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems for virtually every sport at every level of competition. Dawson led NCAA Division II with 11.4 rebounds a game and was fourth in the nation in blocked shots with 3.3 per contest. He led the South Central region in both categories. He scored 16.9 points per game and shot 61.6 percent from the floor to go with his 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals a game. Coffman led MSU in scoring with 17.0 points a game, while ranking second in the LSC and region in assists with 5.28 per game. He shot 45.9 percent from the three-point arc, ranking 14th nationally. He connected on 84.7 percent of his free throws to rank second in the region.

Midwestern State University women’s assistant basketball coach Jennifer Griffin resigned her position to become the new head girls basketball coach at Dumas High School. Griffin has been a part of the MSU women’s basketball program since 1994, and head coach Shannon Burks top assistant since 2000. “It was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” Griffin stated. “I’m looking forward to being a head coach and I’m grateful to MSU and Coach Burks for the valuable experience I’ve received here.” Griffin, then Jennifer Butler, came to Midwestern as a player in 1994. She started in 102 of 103 games she played in, but two knee injuries cut short her playing career. Griffin averaged 7.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists a game for MSU. During her career, she helped MSU to three appearances in the NAIA playoffs, including the NAIA National Tournament in 1994-95. She joined the coaching staff in 1999 under Burks as a graduate assistant and became the top assistant a season later. “We hate to see Jennifer go because she’s meant so much to me and our program,” Burks said. “She’ll be hard to replace.”

The 18th ranked Midwestern State University Mustangs closed out a perfect Lone Star Conference Tournament with a 4-3 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma May 5 to win the 2007 Lone Star Conference Championship. For MSU it was the second straight LSC title. The Mustangs earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Softball Tournament that began May 10 with the South Central Regional in San Angelo. The Midwestern State softball team was then awarded the top spot in the NCAA South Central Regional Softball Tournament. The regional tournament, which was a double elimination tournament, featured eight teams from three different conferences, the Lone Star Conference, the Heartland Conference, and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The team lost its second and final game in the 2007 NCAA South Central Regional, falling to Angelo State, 6-0. “It was a great year and a great season” said Mustangs Coach Brady Tigert.

MSU Cheerleaders Place Fourth in the Nation

The Midwestern State University Cheerleading squad advanced to finals for the second year in a row at the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Collegiate Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida on Friday, April 6, 2007. After bobbling some skills during the preliminary competition, the squad came back the next morning and won the Challenge Cup or wild card spot to be the last of eight teams competing in finals. That afternoon on the finals mat, MSU performed and placed fourth in the nation, tying a school best dating back to the 1997-98 team.

The squad received a bid to compete in nationals after a superior performance at summer camp in Manhattan, Kansas. To prepare for competition, the cheerleaders raised enough money through various fundraising activities to hire a cheer choreographer and practiced an average of five days a week from January through April.

This year, two Midwestern State cyclists won national titles at USA Cycling’s Collegiate National Road Cycling Championships. Freshman Alex Boyd won an 84-mile road race in 90-degree heat. He rode away from a breakaway group with four other riders that had amassed a two-minute lead on the field and rode solo for the last 17 miles of the race. “We were working together pretty well until the gap came down to about 30 seconds, so I decided to go by myself,” Boyd said. “I’ve never won a national title before and I’ve been racing since I was 12, so this ranks up there as one of my biggest results.” Natalie Klemko, also a MSU freshman, attacked the women’s criterium field, which was still intact, with five laps left in the race. She quickly built a lead of approximately 20 seconds and held off a last-lap surge to ride across the finish line alone to win the hour-long race on streets adjacent to the University of Kansas campus. The efforts by Boyd and Klemko highlighted a solid effort by the 10-rider MSU squad at nationals. The Mustangs finished fourth overall among 45 schools competing in Division 1. “Natalie and Alex’s wins are a credit to their incredible talent and all of the hard work that they put into this sport every day,” said MSU Coach Gary Achterberg. “The rest of the team also deserves credit. In both Alex’s and Natalie’s races, they had teammates who did lots of work back in the field to seal those victories.” MSU’s women’s team time trial team of Klemko, Sheri Jordan, Ivana Miucic and Laura Whittle also earned a podium spot with their fourth-place finish in the team time trial competition. The Mustangs finished 25 seconds behind winner Fort Lewis University. MSU’s men finished 12th in the team time trial. Others competing for MSU were Adam Biwan, Mitch Comardo, Jarred Gilker, Kip Spaude and Tiffany Stewart. The team was supported by Achterberg, team manager Michael Baldwin and mechanic Jarvis Polvado, owner of Texoma Cycling Center. Boyd also finished 14th in Sunday’s criterium. His combined points from the two individual events earned him the third-place medal in the men’s individual omnium. Klemko finished 16th in a road race, earning her the fifth-place podium spot in the women’s individual omnium. The road race posed a challenge for the race organizers as well as the athletes. Steady rain left a portion of the original course under five feet of water, forcing a last-minute diversion that included a stretch of gravel road. That took many riders out of the race with flats that the neutral wheel support struggled to service. Two of MSU’s men and one of its women did not finish the race due to flats on the gravel portion of the course. The national titles are the 20th and 21st earned by Midwestern in the nearly 20-year history of the program. They are the third and fourth during the 2006-07 school year. Aaron Kacala, also a freshman, earned two first-place medals in the collegiate national track championships last September in Indianapolis.

Viola Grady Leadership Award Zeno Ferguson Ferguson is a mechanical engineering major. He serves as the advertising and marketing chair for the University Programming Board and senior student senator for the Student Government Association. He is a member of the Caribbean Students Organization, International Student Association, Math Club, Student Ambassadors, Catholic Campus Center, and Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He serves as a peer counselor for Spirit Days, Mustangs Rally and Orientation. Ferguson is also a photographer for the Wai-Kun Yearbook and The Wichitan. In addition to his service on several campus committees, he also volunteers for events off campus including Walk for Life, Special Olympics, Association of Retarded Citizens, and Graffiti Removal at the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

MSU Achievements

2007 Hardin Scholar Rebecca Ann Bullion Rebecca Bullion, a biology major, was named Hardin Scholar. This is the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest award for academic excellence and was begun in 1961 by the Hardin Foundation. It is presented each spring to a student during his or her senior year and a $2,500 award is given with the honor.

Bullion serves as a resident assistant for the Office of Housing. She is a member of the Biology Club and the Honors Program. She serves as historian of the PreProfessional Club and has been a Spirit Days Peer Counselor, a Mustangs Rally host and a volunteer at the Math, Science, and U Girls Conference. She has been on the Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Honor Roll each of the semesters she has been at MSU.

Erin Kathleen Short, a chemistry major, was named Clark Scholar. The Clark award was established in 1976 to honor E. B. Clark, a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of the MSU Foundation. It is presented each spring to a student in his or her junior year and carries with it a $1,500 award. Short is a Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Leadership Scholar, Honors Program Scholar, and Harrison Pre-Med Scholar. She is a member of the Biology Club, Beta Beta Beta, Student Ambassadors, and University Programming Board. Short has also served as a Peer Counselor for Mustangs Rally and Spirit Days.

2007 Clark Scholar Erin Kathleen Short Amber Witte, a math major, was choosen by a committee to recieve the Crenshaw/Decartes Award. The Crenshaw/Descartes award is given to an outstanding mathematics or science student with high academics and is highly active in the community. Contributions are made by the Crenshaw family who continuously donate to the cash award given at the Mathematics and Science Banquet. Witte is the 2006 Clark Scholar, 2005/2006 Outstanding sophomore Woman of the Year, on the Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Honor Roll, a Leadership Scholar, Crawford award recipient, Bourland/Hawley award recipient, MSU President Leadership Scholar, Alpha Lameda Delta member, and a member of Phi Eta Sigma. She is a volunteer at North Texas Rehab, Texas Round-Up and tutors math outside of school. de ca

Farewell my Friends

It’s been a terribly long journey, and it’s been well worth it. We all hope you enjoy it as much as we have. This is the first year we became the mustangs and our theme, Untamed, represents the lasting spirit and ongoing journey of our fellow students. There are many people to thank. Of course Brian Darland for being there everytime we needed help, our Advisor Matt for was always being there with advise and suggestions, Mama Sue, Brandy, Haley, and Michele for helping with all the mishaps with Staplers, printers, tape, and we’re sure the list could go on. And thanks to Julia Ungs who helped finish the book! Thank you to those who took these amazing pictures and offered them to us. We’d be no where with out all our helpful photographers.
