Thinking about the bicycle as a ‘tool’ soon transitions into the need for shovels, mattocks, McLeods, brush mowers, chainsaws, hammers and nails. They use these tools to satisfy their own hunger for riding something new. Yet they also use these tools to push the progression of the sport. In the digital age that we live in their constructs are now viewed by millions of riders around the globe. The trails that they build inspire others to do the same. This age of riding progression that we live in is fueled by the trail builders. They are both selfish and selfless in their actions. Their creativity transcends both geography and culture in a way that imbues a common language amongst riders everywhere.

It is what you make it. Guess what? In the end it is pretty simple. Tools of the trade l Think about what it takes to get your job done every day. What specifically do you need? What could you never do without? If you talk to a majority of our riders—the answer isn’t always easy. Instinctively, they would say that their stable of bikes are the only tools they need. However, upon asking the simple question you can see that it quickly spirals into something more complicated.

The primary tool that we cannot live without is, in fact, the bicycle. It incites the hunger that we need to wake up every morning and

create. It motivates our riders and trail builders everywhere to do what they

do. This catalog is a tribute to the tools that inspire us and to the riders everywhere who build what we

ride!

Sure, we can throw money at a rider and they’ll tell everyone that it’s great regardless of performance so long as they collect a check. At Hayes, our riders are an extension of our engineering team and we demand absolute transparency when it comes to feedback. If something sucks—we hear about it and make improvements. If something is great—we say: “Awesome!”

“How can we make it even better?” It is a never ending cycle. 360 days a year we can count on some rider, in some region of the globe, shredding the equipment we provide them with to do their jobs so that we can do ours. EXPLORING THE UNKOWN l At its core, mountain biking is a conduit to discovery. The pioneers of the sport developed two-wheeled, humanpowered instruments for mobility into virgin territory. In fact the progressivity of mountain biking has everything to do with exploration. Millimeters in suspension, tube and wheel diameters, tire widths, bar lengths—can all be attributed to the thirst for unearthing and the asking of a simple question: “What if…?” From first descents of alpine peaks to the sweaty grunt work of building trails and features, mountain biking and the bikes themselves are an evolutionary offspring of a constant hunger. A search. Our HTP riders are in constant motion, traveling the globe to satiate their bottomless craving. At Hayes, we are the recipients of their adventure. Our development cycle is a constant evolution of living and creating through their rides. In 2014 Hannes Klausner rolled his wheels into a remote region of Africa. His expedition of the Cape Verde Islands were captured in video and the brilliant photography found in these pages.

We made you faster You’re only as fast as your ability to control your speed. In the summer of 1997, Darren Campbell, our VP GM was a young engineer and delivered our first production run of brakes to Trek in the trunk of his car.

It was a revolution. Never before were riders able to control their speed with the modulation and power that a disc brake offered under countless conditions. Since that time, the competition has swarmed and certainly options exist. However, there is only one original. One brand that is single mindedly focused on braking.

Snug the mount bolts using the 5mm hex tool while keeping the outer pad against the disc. 2mm

Turn each adjuster screw 1/4 turn then rotate the wheel and listen for pad rubbing, repeat until the pads clear the disc.

ProTaper® Carbon SL Bars feature PFL (Plastic Foam Lamination) manufacturing. PFL utilizes tiny particles and steam pressure in the lamination process to expand and shape the structure of the bars. One of the most frequently asked questions we get is: “What does A.D.D. stand for?”

Developed with the single speed DJ/ Park rig in mind, the DJsinglé is built with a single speed alloy freehub body specifically for horizontal dropouts and laced up to SUNringlé Inferno 31 rims—known for their durability. A beefy alloy rear axle and oversized 3/8th inch axle bolts provide an added touch of indestructibility. The singlé front wheel is easily converted to either 15 or 20mm axle sizes with adaptors included in the box.

SPOKE PREP The ultimate spoke thread compound is SpokePrep™ because it is both a lubricant and a thread lock! How can it do both? When spoke tension is low and there is risk of loosening, SpokePrep “locks” the nipple by maintaining a minimum nipple torque. When spoke tension is high SpokePrep keeps nipple torque low with Teflon lubrication. We also have SpokePrep in two colors so you can prep your spokes and immediately know on which side of the wheel they will be used.
