CASTING NEWS – MACBETH AND MARY ROSE MACBETH 12 September – 11 October 2008 Talented director Lucy Pitman-Wallace leads the creative team on our season’s first show, Shakespeare’s ‘Scottish play’ Macbeth. We are very excited to be working alongside Nottingham Playhouse and delighted to have Lucy Pitman-Wallace directing the show. In 2005 Lucy earned her TMA Best Director Nomination for her UK première production of The Burial at Thebes (Nottingham Playhouse) and she has just directed Endgame for the Liverpool Everyman starring Matthew Kelly and Matthew Rixon. Award-winning Scottish actor Liam Brennan takes the lead role as Macbeth in this thrillingly dark tale of power, ambition and the supernatural in medieval Scotland. Joining Liam on stage is Allison McKenzie as Lady Macbeth, Jimmy Chisholm playing Duncan, King of Scotland, Christopher Brand as Macduff, Martin Ledwith as Banquo, Claire Brown as Lady Macduff, Donald Pirie as Ross, and Clare McCarron and Pauline Lynch playing the Witches.

ALLISON MCKENZIE Lady Macbeth We are delighted to welcome Allison to the Lyceum. She has performed throughout Scotland, most notably at Dundee Rep for All My Sons (2003), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2003) and Cabaret (2004). More recently she has performed at Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre in James and the Giant Peach (2007). She is perhaps most well known for her role in River City back in 2005 when she played ‘superbitch’ Joanne Rossi for two years. Other television credits include Rebus (2004), Taggart (2000) and the film Club Le Monde (Outlaw Films, 2006).

SAM HEUGHAN Malcolm Sam is a talented up and coming young actor who has his roots in the Lyceum’s own youth theatre. He has become very successful through regular performances at leading Scottish companies including the Traverse, the Citizens’ and Dundee Rep. His theatre credits include Romeo and Juliet (Dundee Rep, 2008), Hamlet (Citizens’, 2007),

The Pearlfisher (Traverse, 2007), Knives in Hens (TAG Theatre, 2005) and A Christmas Carol (Citizens’, 2002). Sam has also worked at the Royal Exchange, Manchester appearing in The Vortex with Will Young in 2006. His television credits include Rebus (2007), Midsomer Murders (2006) and River City (2005).

CHRISTOPHER BRAND Macduff A newcomer to the Lyceum, Christopher has an extensive history of stage and television appearances, from Shakespeare to Basil Brush! Theatre credits include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at London’s Palladium in 2003, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1998 and an impressive collection of Shakespeare’s plays including Romeo and Juliet (Chichester Festival Theatre, 2002), The Winter’s Tale (Royal Shakespeare Company, 1999) and The Taming of The Shrew (Bloomsbury Theatre, 1998). Television credits include Casualty (2004), My Family (2004), and Tommy Cooper in The Real Tommy Cooper (2001). Christopher also appeared in the feature film Basic Instinct 2 in 2005.

MARY ROSE 24 October – 15 November 2008 Associate Director at the Lyceum, Tony Cownie, will direct our second play of the Season, Mary Rose. JM Barrie’s wonderful Edwardian ghost story tells of the events surrounding Mary Rose and her unnerving past which is brought to light again after many decades. This is a compelling tale which will leave you shivering with more than just the cold as the dark nights draw in! Kim Gerard takes the title role and will be reunited with director Tony Cownie from last season’s successful Vanity Fair. Joining Kim in this superb cast is Michael Mackenzie as Mr Morland, John Ramage as Mr Amy and renowned Scottish actress Una McLean playing the part of Mrs Otery. In addition Perri Snowdon plays Simon Blake and Anne Kidd will appear as Mrs Morland.

KIM GERARD

MICHAEL MACKENZIE

Kim will be familiar to many Lyceum regulars for her outstanding roles in last season’s Living Quarters as the youngest daughter Tina, and as Amelia Sedley in Vanity Fair. Kim has regularly performed at Dundee Rep with theatre credits including Hansel & Gretel (2007), Sweet Bird of Youth (2006), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2006) and more recently the musical Sunshine on Leith (2007). LYCEUM PEOPLE

Michael Thomas

Melissa Clarke

Shirley Monteith

Gareth Davies

MARKETING AND PRESS DEPARTMENT We all thought it was about time you got an insight into the very busy world of our marketing team to find out what we all do and how we go about promoting our season. Our team includes Shirley Monteith, Marketing Manager, Michael Thomas, Marketing and Communications Officer, Melissa Clarke, Press Officer and Gareth Davies, Group Sales Co-ordinator. WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE LYCEUM? Michael – I started in the Box Office in March 2001, before moving to marketing in 2006 and I’ve just been promoted to Marketing and Communications Officer. Melissa – November 2006 in the Box Office and marketing and press since Sept 2007. Shirley – First joined when I was a student and worked in the bars. Have left and come back twice since then and have worked in the Box Office, as duty manager, in group sales and now I lead the marketing team. Gareth – I joined the Lyceum in March 2006, just in time to start working on that year’s Christmas show, Pinocchio… Christmas always comes early for me at the Lyceum! WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? Michael – I work closely with the rest of the marketing team to promote the work of the Lyceum (including our stage work, education programme and fundraising) and the theatre as a whole. I help with the creation of our various pieces of printed material including season brochures, flyers and programmes for each of our shows. Melissa – I liaise with the press on generating publicity for shows, directors and actors through interviews and features and I commission all photography for publicity. Shirley – My job is both exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time. Our department is responsible for all the print, advertising, press, promotions and sales for the whole company – but in particular the productions. That means we need to target the right people and consistently produce inspiring print and advertising to encourage visitors to buy tickets and keep our audience figures as high as possible. It is a huge responsibility but someone has to do it! Gareth – I’m the primary point of contact for group sales bookings and school group bookings. I also liaise with the Education Department to promote Lyceum productions to schools across Scotland. A lot of my time is spent co-ordinating school visits to our Christmas shows. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? Michael – I’m currently involved with the ongoing development of our website, which is now progressing into creating and presenting rich

content such as web videos, virtual tours, interviews, online surveys and so on. This is definitely my favourite part of the job as I am interested in it on a personal level, and also feel it’s a great way to try and open the Lyceum to new audiences. Melissa – I enjoy setting up interviews and features and seeing the finished articles in the papers. Also coming up with creative ideas for publicity photo shoots, love our opening nights and meeting with press and our guests – you never know who you might bump into! Shirley – I love working in a creative atmosphere and with the rehearsal room being along the corridor from my office we get to meet the actors everyday and really feel part of the whole process. Oh – and opening nights – I love when the curtain goes up after the buzz of everyone arriving. Gareth – I particularly enjoy dealing with my regular ‘groupies’ – some come to almost every play in the Season and they’re not shy about sharing their thoughts about the shows! So it’s always nice to get feedback about which productions they’ve enjoyed. WHAT SHOW ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST THIS SEASON AND WHY? Michael – Copenhagen without a doubt – I absolutely love Michael Frayn’s writing, very funny stuff with a slightly dark and uneasy edge to it. It’s just a shame that I have to wait until next May to see it! Melissa – This is tough as Mark has pulled together another very exciting season of plays but I am particularly looking forward to seeing Macbeth and working with Nottingham Playhouse on this show. Shirley – That is difficult because this season I have only seen one of the plays performed before so it is all very exciting. That is why I like Mark Thomson’s programming – he brings new challenges to theatre in Edinburgh. If I had to choose one it would be Curse of the Starving Class – it seems so relevant to today – if you like Shameless you’ll love this! Gareth – I think The Mystery of Irma Vep will be a riot! It’s such a mad script, with two actors playing all number of things that go bump in the night – and the pre-show talk from a parapsychologist will be especially interesting!

COMINGS AND GOINGS... We were very sad to see Deputy Box Office Manager Fiona Campbell leave us at the end of May to travel and work in New Zealand. We were delighted when Chris Ashwell, former box office assistant, took up the available post. He will join Gareth, Pauline and Geraldine as your regular Box Office team who will be happy to help you with any enquiries regarding show information and your subscription tickets throughout the Season. Another new face joining the Lyceum this summer will be Eleanor Harris who takes up her new role in the Sponsorship Department in August. Len McCarthy our Bars and Events Manager has been working with us over the past few months and many of you may already have had a friendly chat with him at one of our bars during your visit to last season’s plays.
