A second chance Appalachian State jumped back into the race to win a 12th Southern Conference championship with a 31-28 victory over Georgia Southern at Paulson Stadium Nov. 3. FURMAN AT APPALACHIAN STATE: A LOOK AT THE SERIES

Mountaineers eye SoCon title after victory BY STEVE BEHR sports@wataugademocrat.com Appalachian State got a second chance at a Southern Conference championship last week. The Mountaineers plan to take advantage of it. Appalachian State (7-3, 5-2 SoCon) hosts Furman (3-6, 2-4) Saturday looking for a share of its 12th Southern Conference championship. The Mountaineers could be just the second team in conference history to win 12 league titles. The first is Furman. The Paladins hold the SoCon record with 12 league championships either won outright or shared. Furman won these league championships from 1978-2004. Appalachian State won its first league title in 1978. The Mountaineers put six straight SoCon championships together between 2005-10 before finishing second to Georgia Southern last season. Georgia Southern and Duke have each won 10 league titles. Georgia Southern (7-2, 6-2) added at least a tie Saturday when Wofford lost to Samford 24-17. There is a logjam at the top of the SoCon. Wofford is 7-2, 5-2, while Chattanooga is 5-4, 4-2. That leaves four teams at the top of the conference with two losses. There are several scenarios that are available to determine the SoCon’s automatic bid. Appalachian State must beat Furman to stay in contention for the bid. The Mountaineers hold tie-breaking advantages over Georgia Southern and Chattanooga because they beat both teams. Wofford holds tiebreakers on Appalachian State because of its 38-28 win over the Mountaineers. STRANGE HAPPENINGS Some of Appalachian State’s most bizzare victories have come against Furman at Kidd Brewer Stadium. None were stranger than 2002. Trailing 15-14, after Furman drove the length of the field for a touchdown, ASU defensive end Josh Jeffries intercepted a Billy Napier twopoint conversion pass attempt. Jeffries lateraled the ball to Derrick Black, who returned the ball for a defensive twopoint conversion, which gave the Mountain-
ASU receiver Sean Price scores on a 56-yard touchdown in the Mountaineers’ 31-28 victory over Georgia Southern on Nov. 3. STEVE BEHR | WATAUGA DEMOCRAT
eers a 16-15 victory. It was called the “Miracle on the Mountain.” Two years later, Appalachian State took a 30-29 victory when ASU quarterback Richie Williams scored on a 13-yard run on the Mountaineers’ final drive. During the game, Williams set an NCAA record for passing accuracy by completing 40-of-45 attempts, including a record 28 in a row. The Mountaineers also beat the Paladins 29-23 in the 2005 playoffs when Trey Elder came off the bench for an injured Williams and threw a touchdown pass on his first attempt. Furman quarterback Ingle Martin looked ready to put the Paladins in front late in the game on a quarterback run, but

a tie. The teams have met every year since 1971.
FURMAN STRUGGLES IN BOONE Furman has also lost plenty of seemingly normal games at The Rock. Appalachian State has not lost to Furman in Boone since 1996 when the Paladins took a 20-14 win. Since then, Appalachian State has won eight straight games at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The latest was a 37-26 decision in 2010. Appalachian State has also won nine of the last 11 games with Furman, but the Paladins won the last showdown, a 20-10 win over the Mountaineers. Furman holds a 22-17-3 edge after winning 12 of the first 15 matchups. Two of those games ended in

FURMAN STRUGGLES IN 2012 Furman finds itself in the unusual role of spoiler this season after routinely fighting for a conference championship during the past two decades. The Paladins have gone through two three-game losing streaks this season, but go into their game Saturday at ASU with a 31-17 victory over Elon. Two of those losses were road setbacks to Wofford (20-17) and Samford (24-21). Offense is part of the problem. The Paladins are last in scoring offense at 24.9 points per game.
