Appalachian State takes on Buccaneers BY STEVE BEHR sports@wataugademocrat.com Appalachian State hosts Charleston Southern in the first meeting between the teams Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m. Appalachian State (1-2, 1-0 Southern Conference) is coming off a 31-21 road victory at Elon on Sept. 21. The Mountaineers, led by 308 total yards from running back Marcus Cox, took a 17-0 lead and held on to beat the Phoenix, which rallied for two fourth quarter touchdowns. Cox put the final nails in Elon’s coffin when he scored on a 3-yard run late in the fourth quarter to put the Mountaineers in front 31-21. Cox ran for all 75 yards of the drive. Cox was named the SoCon’s Offensive Player of the Week for his effort. Appalachian State’s showdown against Charleston Southern is the Mountaineers’ first game against a team from the Big South. Appalachian State is 42-152 all-time against Big South opponents and has won 17 straight against Big South opponents. The Mountaineers are looking to avoid losing three-straight games at Kidd Brewer Stadium. After losing 38-37 in overtime to Illinois State in the second round of the 2012 Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, Appalachian State lost its season-opening game 24-21 to North Carolina A&T on Sept. 7. Charleston Southern (40) is off to a fast start, which includes a 32-29 victory over The Citadel in the first week of the season. The Buccaneers are led by quarterback Malcolm Dixon, who has thrown for 470 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception. Dixon’s favorite target this season is Donte Sumpt-
er, who has eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown. Christian Reyes leads the Buccaneers in rushing with 349 yards on 73 carries and three touchdowns. Appalachian State has used two quarterbacks in
its three games this season. Jamal Londry-Jackson has been the starter, but backup Kameron Bryant leads the team in passing. Bryant, a sophomore, has completed 38-of-55 passes for 506 yards and four touchdowns.
