SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2012
Catching on at ASU Appalachian State is home to some of the best receivers in the Southern Conference, if not in all the Football Championship Subdivision. Elon found that out the hard way when Appalachian State beat the Phoenix 35-23 during homecoming at Kidd Brewer Stadium. At left, Tony Washington breaks into the open field in the first half against the Phoenix. At bottom right, freshman Malachi Jones works for running room after catching a screen pass. At bottom left, Andrew Peacock catches a pass for a first down against the Phoenix. Appalachian State’s offense faces the Wofford Terriers today at The Rock. PHOTOS BY STEVE BEHR | WATAUGA DEMOCRAT

WOFFORD AT APPALACHIAN STATE: A LOOK AT THE SERIES

|
The Rock turns into house of horrors for Terriers BY STEVE BEHR sports@wataugademocrat.com Kidd Brewer Stadium has been a tough place for Wofford to play in recent years. Wofford, ranked eighth by The Sports Network, visits The Rock for a Southern Conference showdown with Appalachian State at 3:30 today. It’s a game that will go a long way in determining the SoCon championship. Both teams have just one loss in Southern Conference play. Appalachian State is 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the SoCon, while Wofford is 5-1, 3-1. In recent years, Appalachian State has held a major home field advantage. The Mountaineers have beaten Wofford in 12of-14 games played at Kidd Brewer, but the last two games were blowouts. Appalachian State won the last game with Wofford at Kidd Brewer 43-13 in 2010. Two years earlier, the Mountaineers exploded to a 70-24 victory in front of an ESPN2 audience on Halloween night. In the last four games played at Kidd Brewer Stadium, Appalachian State has beaten Wofford by an average score of 41-15. “App has just whipped us,” Wofford coach Mike Ayers said. “We’ve been going up there not executing and turning the ball over. We’ve been giving them too many chances with the football. We’ve got to take care of the ball, and we’ve got to be able to move the sticks and score some points.” If there was one good thing to come out of the loss in 2008 for the Terriers, it was the coming out party for running back Eric Breitenstein. The former Watauga standout was a true freshman that gained 157 yards coming off the bench. This season, Breitenstein leads the conference, and is second in the nation, in rushing with 995 yards. “He is so strong and he’s got really good vision,” Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore said. “He sees a lot of things other backs don’t see.” MORE ON THE SERIES Since Wofford joined the Southern Conference in 1997, Appalachian State owns an

11-4 advantage in 15 games. Appalachian State has also won six of the last eight games with the Terriers. Wofford won the last meeting, taking a 28-14 victory at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. The matchup today is the sixth time that both teams are ranked, and the 16th time when at least one of the teams is ranked. The teams have also been major players in determining the SoCon championship in recent years. Since 2003, both teams have either shared, or won the SoCon title outright in seven of the last nine seasons. Wofford won it in 2003 and shared with Appalachian State in 2007 and 2010. Appalachian State won the league championship outright in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009. Georgia Southern shared the 2004 SoCon championship with Furman, and won it alone in 2011.

LOOKING BACK AT 2011 Appalachian State, ranked No. 3, had just eight possessions in the entire ballgame and was in position to score on five of them. The Mountaineers scored twice, but came away with no points on two other red-zone possessions. The Mountaineers also missed three field goals. Wofford’s offense was very efficient by converting 11-of-18 third downs and 4-of-4 fourth downs. Wofford gained 157 of its 407 total yards on 22 third- and fourth-down plays. Wofford also ran 17 more plays than Appalachian State. The Terriers also dominated time of possession by holding a 38:30-21:30 edge. KIMBROUGH RETURNS Appalachian State will have linebacker Jeremy Kimbrough on the field Saturday,

which was not the case in Spartanburg last season. Kimbrough was serving a suspension by the league for getting two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called on him for excessive celebration during ASU’s win over Chattanooga the week earlier. LOOKING BACK AT 2010 Appalachian State, ranked third at the time, took a 38-0 lead over Wofford in what was a key game that determined the Southern Conference championship. Appalachian State, which was 9-1, 7-1 before that game, outgained Wofford, which was 8-2, 6-1, 125-23 in the first quarter and 248-35 by halftime. Wofford went nearly 25 minutes without a first down. The Terriers picked up 235 of their 275 yards of total offense after the Mountaineers had taken a 38-0 lead.
