ABOUT MOUNT MARTY Mount Marty College is South Dakota’s Catholic, Benedictine institution of higher education, located along the bluffs of the Missouri River in Yankton, with additional locations in Watertown and Sioux Falls. MMC offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with particular focus on student and alumni success in high-demand fields such as accounting, business, criminal justice, education, health sciences, recreation management, and more. Mount Marty emphasizes academic excellence and develops well-rounded students with intellectual competence, and professional and personal skills including moral, spiritual, and social values. Mount Marty believes the values of community, hospitality, lifelong learning, and awareness of God are fundamental to the daily lives of students, faculty, and staff. The true measure of our achievements is the success of our students as they go forth to serve others in their communities and in the world. Mount Marty is a faith-based learning community where your leadership skills will be cultivated and encouraged in an inclusive spiritual environment.
WHO IS SAINT BENEDICT? Mount Marty was founded in 1936 by the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery. St. Benedict was a religious reformer who lived in Italy in the late 400s and early 500s. He is known as the “father of Western monasticism,” having established the Rule of St. Benedict with doctrines concerning truthfulness, service to others, hospitality, respect, and dignity — all centered on the awareness of God. Though St. Benedict lived 1,500 years ago, his beliefs and values have never become outdated. Educated in the theory and practice of the Catholic, Benedictine values, Mount Marty graduates lead with vision, serve with virtue, and impact with value.
