CREATING EFFECTIVE AND ‘AUTHENTIC’ LEADERS IN A CHANGING ENVIRONMENT Leadership is constantly evolving. The continuous professional development of any organisation’s leaders must also evolve to meet the changing needs of their teams and key stakeholders. Today, we are in the ‘post-heroic’ era, where effective leaders must be open, transparent and empowering. We also expect them to be inspirational and effective – but in ways that support their teams, establish the shared vision and the common values that drive every decision, action and interaction both internally and externally. They must demonstrate that they care about their people and all their stakeholders, internal or external, showing understanding and compassion as well as clear leadership and decision making.

Their audiences want to understand their vision and see them using their knowledge and skills to grow and develop their people and their organisations. More than 90% of effective leadership is effective communication, but few board level directors or senior managers are trained regularly or updated in the skills needed to communicate effectively. Yet they are measured and given the unspoken authority of the group they lead, based upon their communication skills and ability to share their vision, inspire, motivate and persuade them to change.

THE MTM APPROACH Some say that motivation or persuasion is an art. World-class cognitive research and knowledge base in this area, says it is far more than that. It is a science with core principles, rules and tools that when followed, creates effective communication that allows leaders to deliver persuasive, authentic leadership with real impact and effect. Our expert coaches forensically dissect examples of leadership that provoke radical change, surprise pundits or move audiences. We use our findings to help today’s and tomorrow’s leaders understand and develop all the tools and techniques needed to become effective leaders who can achieve their personal and corporate goals. Our aim is to refine our extensive specialist knowledge of the different factors that combine to make an effective leader or manager have a real impact on their audiences. We are constantly updating our knowledge from leading academic research from cognitive neuroscientists who are on the cutting edge of identifying how people perceive, interpret and respond to what a leader says, looks like or does. We incorporate the key learning points into our practical intensive coaching techniques, making the theory accessible, so that delegates understand and can quickly apply the approaches, techniques and tools we provide, to motivate, inspire or pursuade their audiences. The MTM Centre for Leadership and Management Development focuses on how the core principles can be applied in each delegate’s own industry, role and situation. Every coaching or mentoring session is relevant, has real value and can deliver high impact, because it is tailored to the specific needs of the individual or group of delegates with whom we are working.

being questioned by government select committees or handling a crisis; our specialist coaching team make a real and lasting impact on the leaders and managers with whom we work, boosting both confidence and capability. We help clients prepare and deliver speeches or presentations on new product launches or refine pitch presentations to sell their ideas & services, negotiate more effectively, create messaging that clarifies their position when issues arise and design and support culture or organisational change communications that have real impact and actually deliver the changes that have been targeted. We identify individual’s personality types and the range of leadership styles that fit their personalities, aligning them with their own and the group’s objectives. This helps them interact more effectively with their senior directors, peer groups, their teams or their customers.

“Trainers were friendly and enthusiastic...and really built up my confidence.” The training and coaching needs of such key employees are vital to ensuring current and future success, so their strengths and weaknesses need to be considered and developed in a structured way that is aligned to their own personal learning styles. They can then develop their own coaching or mentoring skills to improve the effectiveness of theirown workforce.

From helping to form and clearly articulate their vision, brand values and key objectives in a variety of communication situations that may include public speaking, board room presentation, team briefings and media interviews through to webinars,

of effective leadership is effective communication, but few board level directors or senior managers are trained regularly.

Our Style Of Leadership & Management Development Coaching MTM’s coaching teams know that our typical delegate is an intelligent, high performing individual who needs bespoke support from our specialists to help them change how they interact with their key stakeholders, opening them up to learning new skills or techniques for achieving their goals. We seek to understand their own and their organisation’s objectives. Then, through a series of mainly practical workshops, we help them understand how their own audiences take on board, process and respond to information and actions as leaders. We help them understand variation in response due to their language, culture and personality type and ask them to deliver a leadership or team briefing, speech or presentation and effectively handle questions about it. We record their delivery on audio and video so that the analysis can reveal specific details of how they are using their vocal or non-verbal communication. On playback we ask them to critique themselves against best practice examples and their new understanding of how audiences interpret what they see and hear. They quickly identify the key issues and with some careful coaching, understand and apply the changes needed to create a greater impact. Working to support the changes needed to optimise their performance, we help them permanently apply the change in their behaviour, language, content structure, vocal delivery, posture and impact .

“A worthwhile day that will exceed all expectations in terms of a great overview and good practical feedback.” We carefully push each individual’s personal limits and expand their comfort zones, carefully evaluating their performances until they achieve a deep understanding of what they need to do, how they need to do it and crucially why they need to do it, in order to be more effective as leaders. Throughout their coaching sessions, we constantly provide them with personalised tools and techniques to achieve the changes that they want to make. As performance coaches, we use target setting, reflective learning and challenge as techniques to make the key learning points stick, so that over a period of time, the changes consistently make them more effective in all their work and social interactions.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS CONSULTANCY MTM has unparalleled experience in delivering strategic communications advice, based upon auditing, research, design and implementation of communication plans for major projects and global organisations. We provide both advice and, when needed, additional support services to ensure that our clients are fully prepared for the challenges of both internal and stakeholder engagement as well as external media and public scrutiny of them and their actions. From designing integrated communications strategies for delivering corporate organisational or culture change, to providing the executive coaching and support needed to deliver their objectives, our teams are highly experienced handson professionals with a long history of being at the cutting edge of successful communications. We often work with the executive board and their project teams to clarify the vision, the values and the actions that need to be taken to achieve their corporate goals. This is often integrated into a change-management communication strategy and roll-out plan. Aligning the internal team with the key brand and core messaging then allows us to develop an effective external stakeholder communication strategy and delivery plan through the use of public affairs, public relations and the media. When reputation matters, the MTM team conducts an audit of potential communication risks and offers a range of solutions from crisis planning to media management and developing a team of fully trained and practiced spokespeople. Crisis plans can be tested and regularly updated along with the messaging, as the external news agenda changes potential audience perspectives.

“A very tailored, highly concentrated approach.”

ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE AND DEVELOPMENT

ENGAGEMENT AND CULTURE CHANGE

Organisational change can be accomplished in a broad range of ways, but over 80% of change programmes fail because they don’t fully consider the many complex people factors involved in inspiring, motivating and persuading those involved to achieve their goal.

Achieving real engagement and change in an organisation’s culture is a challenge, unless it can be embedded in every individual, at every level of the organisation. Leaders need to identify or create a trigger as an opportunity to achieve the desire for and acceptance of change, across its entire workforce.

Change may need to be achieved quickly, through a major initiative that refocuses the organisation and affects its structure, how it operates, how people work together or the products, services or regions that it serves. Alternatively, it may be done more slowly through progressive development, achieved through consensus, collaboration and upskilling the teams who will deliver the required change.

The motivation to change is an essential element for achieving it, but it must be driven by a clear vision of both what the changes should create, and articulation of the shared values that must be applied to guide individual decision making within the organisation’s processes.

MTM works with respected change specialists in a range of disciplines needed to achieve effective change. Understanding team and individual drivers is an essential part of creating a change process. People are the key. Knowing how different personality types, cultures and group identities respond to change are all essential elements when any leadership team explains why change is necessary and their future vision of how the organisation and its key stakeholders will interact. MTM’s organisational development team know that the change must come from within the organisation, so we engage with the change planning process from the start. We audit the appetite for change, assess the maturity and resilience of the organisation, research opinions, test ideas and closely support senior management teams in designing and delivering an effective change programme that delivers their goals, quickly and efficiently.

What is expected of each person and what behaviours or actions are or are not acceptable, as well as the rewards for achieving the changes that are necessary, must be agreed by the both leadership and all the workforce. Effectively achieving the right culture requires strong leadership that can use a coaching style of management to empower and embed the behaviours and culture throughout the organisation at every level. Communication must be honest, transparent and hold people responsible and accountable for their performances and behaviours. It must make each person want to deliver the products/services in a way that puts customers’ interests, safety and quality of experience first. It must also create a cross functional responsibility for the performance and behaviours of fellow team members that is supportive and non-judgemental.

We create two essential enabling work-streams

“Without exception, everyone who went through any part of the programme was very pleased with the content and the results.”

1) A leadership drive to deliver the psychological and organisational shift in culture to one that puts customer experience first in every decision and cross-functional responsibility for individual and team performance and behaviours. 2) A communications and engagement work-stream to create a ‘viral’ approach to generating change auditors and facilitators at every level of the organisation that can communicate openly up and down the management layers and deliver changes throughout the workplace.

“Practical engaging solutions that really work.”

These work together across all the core workstreams and this matrix approach ensures that every one of an organisation’s employees become engaged and remain committed to the changes. It is reinforced by some very clear leadership messages on commitment to quality, safety and efficiency, and a zero tolerance approach to bad practice or behaviours that undermine the culture or behaviours that are required. Such an integrated approach ensures that a culture change is achieved quickly and effectively.

PRE-COURSE RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS

POST COURSE EVALUATION AND FEEDBACK

To gain understanding of the client industry, client organisation and individual delegates, prior to any course, MTM’s team of researchers and trainers conduct extensive research with our commissioners to establish the needs of both the delegates and their target audience. This includes:

Following any course, MTM obtains feedback both from the delegates and trainers. This includes:

Research with senior personnel An in-depth session to identify the actual scope and direction of the training needs of the individual delegates and prepare realistic exercises and practical workshops, specifically for their knowledge area. This knowledge is compared against notes from previous courses attended by the individuals or their organisation, to ensure that delegates progress and develop further. Individual delegate questionnaires To identify specific areas of concern for individuals and their areas of previous experience/knowledge, we distribute a simple research questionnaire to each delegate in advance of the course. Internet research To identify recent publicity about issues facing the delegates, the organisation, stakeholders, regional and national government, we research every relevant aspect of the organisation. The findings of all this research is then analysed and incorporated into the design and implementation of the training course content and materials used. All delegates receive individually tailored materials. The cost of the initial research is included in the prices shown.

Course evaluation forms All delegates complete an evaluation form, giving feedback on the training. Copies of these are forwarded to the course commissioner following the course. Delegate feedback & on-going development On request in advance, trainers will produce a post-course report on each delegate rating their ability in the following areas; messages & content, voice, non-verbal communication, attitude / approach, overall impression, compatability and finally, suggestions for further training. Copies are sent to the course commissioner and also held on our system to be used as the basis for delivering future developmental training for each delegate.

POST COURSE SUPPORT

CONFIDENTIALITY

Delegates are entitled to 12 months of free on-going support by telephone or email, should they need us.

All material contained in this document and all work undertaken by MTM is subject to a standard confidentiality agreement between the Company, our clients and prospective clients. It operates automatically as soon as work or a proposal is commissioned or requested.

MENTORING

“The trainers have a wealth of experience in their subject matter and the ability to put it over.”

TRAINING AND COACHING SCHEDULES All training schedules suggested are an example for guidance only. The final course specifications will be determined after completion of the research phase, in conjunction with the client to ensure we meet the actual needs of the delegates at whatever skill level required. Individual delegates may receive variations of the schedule if, on the day of training, the trainers identify a specific learning style or coaching need for an individual delegate.

Following any coaching programme, MTM Skills Training Ltd can provide a range of personal leadership mentors to help board level directors or high performing managers use and refine the skills they have learned. The mentor is normally the coach who worked with them during the course. We visit the delegate in their own workplace and provide extra support and reflection on how the delegate is using the skills in practice. We can also provide telephone/video-conference mentoring sessions to supplement face-to-face meetings.

Details of the confidentiality agreement may be viewed on request or clients may prefer to issue their own confidentiality agreement. We reserve the right to refuse training or contractually withdraw to anyone who it believes is involved in concealing illegal or unethical activities. In that event, both the client and MTM are released from all contractual obligations between the parties that may exist, written or otherwise.

Seminar sessions These provide delegates with the theory to place the skills required into the context of their audience needs and demonstrates to delegates how the skills are successfully used. Personal coaching workshops These take the delegates into controlled, observed and video/audio recorded practice sessions with trainers providing individual coaching as required. Evaluation and feedback One of the most vital parts of our training, these sessions allow delegates to see/hear their performance and in either group or individual sessions, assess how to improve their communication skills. All our trainers are qualified in delivering constructive feedback to help build delegates’ confidence and maximise the impact of their learning experience.

“For me this was perhaps the most informative and constructive learning course I have attended.”

Further delegate development MTM Skills Training Ltd provides specialist trainers, who give detailed evaluation and coaching of the delegates during the training, as well as suggestions for further development. All delegates also receive 12 months of on-going support by email and telephone as part of our inclusive commitment to support them.
