Historic Krogh Ranch at Shaffers Crossing SCAN FOR TOUR
The Krogh Ranch at Shaffers Crossing sits at the center of this area’s rich and colorful history. The idyllic setting of the ranch and the resources that it holds are the roots that sustained this thriving community since the early 1900’s. The heart of Elk Creek runs through the lush lower meadow, while the rest of the property gently climbs and falls through rock outcroppings and native grasses, wildflowers and trees. A rich diversity of wildlife finds all that they need here. While a caretaker home and quaint cabin have been added over the years, two historical buildings also still stand. The Octagon Building, built with six sides and a center pole anchored in the ground was first the home of Dickey Cochran. In 1917, when the local Grange chapter was formed, it served as their meeting place and later doubled as a schoolhouse. Not far from the Octagon Building stands the white barn with the stone foundation. Originally constructed using only wooden pegs to secure the structure, the roof held the only nails. Intended originally for feed and livestock, this barn was the center of the social activities on Saturday night for decades. In recent years, the owners have utilized the productive property for cattle grazing and weekend retreats. Today the Krogh Ranch still sits central to the community. Easily accessible, it is minutes from schools, shopping and just a few miles from the majestic new Staunton State Park. With an ideal location and rich resources, the Krogh Ranch offers endless possibilities for productivity, outdoor recreation, agriculture and unspoiled mountain living.
