The
of Georgia's Eye ELLIJAY, IN GILMER COUNTY
E
llijay's lowland valley lies between the high remote mountains and is located on the site of an original Indian settlement and means “new ground place”, a place that has been newly prepared for planting. The combination of the mild temperatures and the rich soil of Gilmer County are ideal for Ellijay being the “Apple Capital” of Georgia, providing more than 600,000 bushels of delicious mountain grown apples each year. Early settlers prospected for gold plus logging led to the arrival of the iron rail in 1834 and Ellijay became the county seat of a classic railroad town. Gilmer County was created from Cherokee County in 1832, and a portion of Union County in 1856. The county was named for George R. Gilmer, former U.S. House representative and governor of Georgia. John W. Clayton introduced apples to the local economy in 1903, who raised over 70 different types, nationally competed, and frequently won contests. With the addition, Gilmer County became less dependent on cotton and helped Ellijay in the early 1920’s, before the Great Depression. 6 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains
Gilmer County has 439 square miles of breath-taking beauty, including the Ellijay and Cartecay Rivers as they come together to form the Coosawattee River. The southwest flow goes into Carters Lake, home to the largest rock dam East of the Mississippi River. This 3,200-acre lake is a popular recreation site for fishing, skiing and boating. Smaller creeks like Turniptown and Mountaintown offer outdoor enthusiasts another scenic backdrop. The Cartecay’s natural progression form flat-water to Class III rapids and many of the waterways have plenty of play spots for paddlers, kayaks, canoeing, or tubing. Kids of all ages will enjoy the River Park on the banks of the Coosawattee River, which offers picnic areas, tennis courts and walking trails along the river. One hundred plus miles of single-track mountain biking trails have earned Gilmer County the official designation as Georgia’s “Mountain Biking Capital” No off season here, with maintained year-round trails that are kept by volunteers and biking associations. www.mountainlakeguide.com | Fall 2018
Discover the simple pleasures of small town life as Ellijay is a true “ Main Street” community where you’ll find the town square beautifully accented with brick-lined sidewalks and a round-a-bout traffic circle by the courthouse. Many Festivals and Celebrations happen throughout the year including the Dancing Goat Folk Fest in late September and Light up Ellijay Christmas Celebration with a "Dr. Suess Whoville" theme. Everything is fun in the downtown square with quaint shops, antiques, galleries, and great food at the local downtown restuarants and taverns. The downtown Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association offer a wide variety of performances throughout the year. The GAHA Community Theatre stages many plays and Concert series. Local Agra-culture include over six wineries in the Gilmer County area and each year the Winegrowers Association of Georgia hosts a Wine Highway Weekend. Fall brings Corn Mazes, Pumpkin Patches, and the many apple orchards that open to the public. The picturesque valley along State Hwy. 52 East, Fall 2018 | www.mountainlakeguide.com
known to locals as "Apple Alley". Other apple orchards are located on Hwy. 76 North / S.R. 282 and Hwy. 515. They offer a yearround selection of baked goods, including apple pies, fritters, cookies, breads and local crafts. Orchard houses also include fresh grown local peaches, nectarines, produce, jams, ciders and juice. Several orchards feature “Pick Your Own Apples” and give tractor rides for the full experience of the beauty and taste fresh from the tree. The Annual Ellijay Apple Festival is held every year in the middle two weekends of October at the Fairgrounds. The 4-day event celebrates the apple harvest and features arts, crafts, quilts, food, apples, music, face painting, and much more. 300+ exhibitors bring unique specialty items including food that is unbeatable every year. Whether your on vacation or a weekend getaway destination, “Pick” Ellijay and Gilmer County and you’re likely to get a taste of picturesque views of mountains, beautiful waterways, and a core of recreational activities that will keep you coming back. Historic Habersham & County Cornelia Nearby Lake Russell From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC
Habersham County is celebrating it's 200th anniversary of its founding. The Bicentennial will continue each month as the community shares stories and celebrates its rich history. Shown below are some of the Best Places to visit and enjoy the incredible historical sites. The Chenocetah Fire Tower is the last rockconstructed, working fire lookout tower in the east. Built by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in 1936 for the Chattahoochee National Forest, the stone tower is 40 feet high and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tower is open to visitors one day a year during the “Big Red Apple Festival.” The city of Cornelia provides hayrides to the tower during daylight hours. Guests may climb to the top for the tower for a spectacular panoramic view of horizons. Downtown Cornelia Train Depot as the original terminal was damaged in a fire, and rebuilt in 1914 to it’s current appearance. Inside the terminal is a museum of early railroad memorabilia, model of the Tallulah Falls train, and two restored cabooses by the depot. The “Big Red Apple,” stands near the train depot as a monument that is seven feet tall, 22 ft. in circumference and weighs 5200 lbs. It was shipped from Virginia in 1926 to celebrate the apple industry. The Community House on Wyly Street is a handsome stone & log structure built by the CCC in 1936 and listed on the National Register. Hilliard Wilbanks memorial and the adjoining park that features picnic areas, playground equipment and walking trails.

WELCOME TO THE
Top of Georgia!
Brasstown Bald
B
rasstown Bald is 4,784 feet above sea level and is the highest point in North Georgia. Those who have visited have marveled at the unsurpassed views! Now you can view Brasstown Bald's Scenic vista in a whole new light - or dark? Coming in September & October, Astronomer, Alex Langoussis will guide you through the night atop Brasstown Bald's 360 degree veiew observation deck, where visitors will engage with wonders of the universe through galactic stories, expertise, and the use of a professional telescope. You could spend the evening being a "Gaurdian of the Galaxy" in learning about the magic of deep space and northern Georgia's incredible nightscape!
Rock Archaeological area and Brasstown Bald Trail climbs 500 ft. in a half mile. Visitors can travel to Brasstown by car from State Rd. Hwy. 180 that can be accessed either coming from Helen or Hiawassee on 17/75 or by Blairsville on Hwy. 129. Once to the parking facility there is a steep, paved trail to the Visitor Information Center at the summit. Although difficult, this is an excellent hike for most people. Frequent stopping places along the path make it achievable for even the most out-of-shape hikers. A shuttle in the visitor parking provides access to the summit in addition to a picnic area for the public.
Pre- registration is required for Friday night star gazing and there is a cost of $20.00 for 13 & up or $10.00 for ages 6-12. Events are subject to weather conditions, no pets, and people are encouraged to bring a flashlight and extra layer of clothers due to the cooler tempatures at night from higher elevation
The Visitors Center provides an unencumbered 360 view of the surrounding mountains and four states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina. A museum and exhibit entitled “Man and the Mountain" shows rural mountain life, forestry in North Georgia and the diversifed wildlife in the area.
During the day there are several trails that lead up to Brasstown Bald, including Wagon Train Trail, Jack’s Knob Trail, where there is an access path to the Appalachian Trail. Arkaquah Trail follows high ridges to the Track
Brasstown Bald is Open Daily 10:00 – 5:00 from May to October and on weekends through November. For more info contact: Blairsville Ranger Office: 706-745-6928 or Brasstown Bald Visitors Information Center: 706-896-2556
