Dahlonega
A Rich Experience
Dahlonega, Georgia is a charming town rich with history, art and adventure. Originally Dahlonega was known for the Cherokee word meaning “yellow money” and was the site of the first major U.S. Gold rush in 1828, 21 years before California’s rush and is home today to the artifactrich Dahlonega Gold Museum. Experience the rush of panning for gold at the ruins at Crisson Gold Mine and come see the only working stamp mill in Georgia. The Historic 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse is the home to the Dahlonega Gold Museum where visitors can see rare gold coins, artifacts, and history of the area. There is more to this town than it’s “golden history”, as Dahlonega has the greatest concentration of wineries in all of Georgia. Its fertile, mineral-rich soil produces amazingly versatile lines of European, French hybrids, and American wine grapes used in the making of many award-winning wines. Dahlonega’s restaurants range from cozy bistros to friendly cafés to metropolitan-chic delights. The downtown square also offers plenty of shopping, country inns, and has wonderful events year-round that include exhibitions, concerts in the park, crafts, galleries and local wine tasting rooms.
4 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains
Festivals are an integral part of Dahlonega’s heritage and are perfect ways to take in the beauty of the outdoors. Outside of the downtown area in the Fall are the Annual Hemlock Festival and in the Spring the Dahlonega Trail Fest. During the holiday’s, an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration is held in December with lighting of luminaries, festivities, carolers, and Santa on the Square. Surrounding the area are a host of outdoor activities including Amicola State Park which is located just outside of Dahlonega on Georgia Highway 52. The park was named “Amicalola” which means ‘tumbling waters’ by the Cherokee Indians for its spectacular waterfall, that is the highest waterfall in the Eastern U.S. at an aweinspiring 729 feet. Dahlonega is home to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,100 plus mile hiking trail that extends up the eastern United States from Georgia to Maine. The famous trail starts on Springer Mountain which is located just a few miles from the in Amicalola State Park & Lodge. The resort offers a variety of activities including hiking, camping, picnic, trout fishing, geocaching, conference center, lodging, and restaurant facility. www.mountainlakeguide.com | Holiday 2018
Weather you like to fish, kayak, canoe, swim, or tubing, the area has many places on the Chestatee River for outdoor adventures. Dahlonega also hosts outdoor events for cycling for the annual Six Gap Century and Three Gap Fifty Bike Rides. Numerous Mountain Bike Trails such as the Jake & Bull Mountain area are shared with hikers and horseback riders. Golfing just outside the Dahlonega area provides a relaxing day with spectacular views of the mountains and river. Visitors are encouraged to spend time in a cabin for the week or stay a weekend. Leisure recreational activities such as Jolie Day Spa offer relaxing massages, spa & salon services. Drive through the countryside to enjoy the wineries, exploring the great outdoors, or having a festive time in town. Whatever you may do, Dahlonega is sure to make you feel “Rich” in discovering this area. Stop in or call the Dahlonega Visitor’s Bureau at 13 Park Street. road trip to
Helen From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC
88 mi 133mi 121 mi 98 mi
Long before the area was established, this was the center of Cherokee Indian culture with villages scattered throughout Nacoochee and what is now known as Helen valleys. The Unicoi Turnpike, which is now is Hwy. 17 / 75 and Gold Rush in 1828 brought thousands of miners to Dukes Creek, England Gold Mine and Hamby Mountain in Helen. Then timber industry and railroad brought jobs to the area from Gainesville and in 1913 the Valley was named “Helen, after the daughter of the railroad surveyor.
Springbierfest in April, Bavarianfest in May and Bingo March - September.
Settlers again left for opportunities in other places by the 1960’s and there was nothing left except a dreary row of concrete block structures. In January 1969, three Helen businessmen were wondering if there wasn’t some way to spruce up the main street in order to encourage tourists to stop. Local artist John Kollock, whose family had deep roots in the area, drew up sketches that were inspired by his time in the service in Germany and visits to small Bavarian towns. With town approval, local carpenters began turning ideas into reality and the improvements began.
UNICOI STATE PARK & LODGE Facilities in the park include a Conference Center and Lodge, which can accommodate up to 200 people; cottages & campsites are also available. Enjoy the mountain views, large stone fireplace, and dine at the Unicoi Restaurant for fresh mountain trout. Many activities include concerts, art & craft shows, Festival of Trees, plus other events.
The story of Helen’s reinvention is one of local entrepreneurship and civic cooperation that has changed a dying lumber town into Georgia’s third most visited city. Conveniently located just 15 miles off Highway 365/I-985 and located an hour and a half north of Atlanta via I-85 or GA Hwy. 400. Helen has many accommodations to stay, restaurants, family activities, and a variety of unique shops. Visitors are welcome to experience the beautiful scenery of the mountains, rivers, and waterfalls, weather you’re on a romantic getaway, family vacation or a weekend trip. FESTHALLE Year Round Festivals held to celebrate seasonal events. Longest Oktoberfest in the South with authentic German music, dancing, costumes, food, & Beergarten! Trout Tournament in March,

Waterfalls Amicalola Falls The highest waterfall in Georgia, falling 729 feet in seven cascades. At the base of the falls, there is a parking area, a reflection pool, and 3/10-mile paved trail leading to an observation deck at the top of the falls. Directions: from Dahlonega, Amicalola State Park’s entrance is on GA Highway 52, east of Ellijay or west of Dahlonega. Anna Ruby Falls Curtis Creek falls 153 feet and York Creek drops 50 feet down the slopes of Tray Mountain in twin waterfalls. The very steep 4/10 mile Anna Ruby Falls Trail is paved and has benches along the trail for sitting or resting while enjoying the beauty of the area. Directions: from Helen, take GA 75 North one mile. Right on GA 356 for 1.5 miles, left on the entrance road to the falls. Becky Branch Falls The 20 foot Becky Branch Falls is easily observed from a wooden bridge which crosses the stream. Becky Branch Falls is accessed via the Bartram Trail. Directions: From Clayton, Georgia go east on Warwoman Road (County Rd. 5) for just less than 3 mile to Poll Creek Road. Park on left side of road by a small branch. Follow the trail on the right side of the branch for about 200 yards to a bridge at the base of the falls.

Travel 2.3 miles on FR 443. Park & walk on the old logging road for 0.6 miles. Directions: From Dahlonega travel north on US 19 for 13.5 miles to Turners Corner. At this intersection, turn left and proceed on US 129 for 4.2 miles. Shortly after the Walasi-yi Center is a left turn for the park. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen for 1.5 miles. Turn left on GA 356 (75 Alternate) for 2.3 miles to the Richard Russell Scenic Highway. Mill Creek Falls The first waterfall drops about 150 feet into Mill Creek. The second plunges another 150 feet, into a series of rapids through the Mill Creek Gorge. Directions: from Hiawassee, take U.S. 76 east, go right on Hwy. 75 for 3.5 miles, left on Mill Creek Rd (FSR 26) for 2.5 miles. Directions: from Helen, take GA 75 north for 1.5 miles. Turn left onto GA 356(75 Alternate) and travel 2.3 miles to the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway. Turn right and travel 2.8 miles to the trailhead and parking area Sea Creek Falls Height: 20 feet • Access: Easy Sea Creek Falls has a large shallow pool at the base which is popular as a wading pool. There seems to be a little difference of opinion as to which county this fall is in, Union or Fannin County Georgia. I have even had two different USFS employees give me two different answers. This Fall will appear in both Union and Fannin county on this site. Directions: from Morganton, Georgia: Travel GA60 toward Suches, Georgia turn left onto FS4 at the Coopers Creek Scenic Area and proceed 3 miles. Turn left and continue 0.3 miles to the primitive camping area at the base of the falls. VACATION GUIDE in the Mountains | 25

Stovall Mill Covered Bridge
T
he Stovall Mill Covered Bridge, the smallest covered bridge in Georgia at one span wide and 36.8 feet long with queenpost truss, was built in 1895 by Will Pardue to span the Chickamauga Creek. An earlier covered bridge at this location, built by Fred Dover, who owned the water turbine powered grist mill, saw mill, shingle mill, and other businesses, was washed away after a storm in the early 1890’s. In 1917, Fred Stovall, Sr. purchased Dover’s enterprise and the bridge became known as Stovall Bridge. The mills are gone now, washed away in 1964, and only the remains
of the dam are evident a few feet from the bridge. The Stovall Mill Covered Bridge was featured in the 1951 movie, “I’d Climb The Highest Mountain” starring Rory Calhoun, William Lundigan and Susan Haywood. The bridge has a variety of names including the Helen Bridge, Sautee Bridge, Nacoochee Bridge and Chickamauga Bridge. Only a short drive from the numerous attractions in the area and worth the trip, Stovall Mill Covered Bridge has a parking area, picnic area and historic marker.

s F Location f On the Old Clayton Highway, east of Sautee
F Directions f From Helen, take State Road 75 south to State Road 17 (turn left). Turn left at the Old Sautee Store on State Road 255. The bridge is on the right.

The Chenocetah Fire Tower Habersham county is a beautiful and inviting place, whether you are coming for a visit or planning to stay. One of the most scenic places to visit is at the top of Chenocetah Mountain, also known as Tower Mountain that is 1,830 feet above sea level. The mountain boasts spectacular views of the Richard B. Russell State Park, Lake Russell, and is surrounded by a number of mountain-biking and hiking trails. Chenocetah Fire Tower is a 40-foot-high stone tower that was built by the WPA and is 54 feet high with a 14 foot base, situated on square stone platform with a granite balustrade. The wood cab is covered by a 15 feet high peaked slate roof that curves slightly at the eaves. Local craftsmen used native granite to construct the tower on Chenocetah Mountain, named with the Indian word meaning “see all around.” It was first dedicated on June 7, 1938, and again after World War II in memory of three forest workers who died during the war. The 40 foot antenna located on the side of the tower was added around 1970 when radio equipment was installed in the interior. The tower was in active service as a fire tower until 1975. The tower was unused until 1989 when the Georgia Forestry Commission took over staffing during the fire season. The tower has been adopted by people living in residential areas near the mountain who have formed the “Chenocetah Conservation Corps” to provide grounds maintenance and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Some residents refer to it as “ Cornelia’s lighthouse” since it is on a hill overlooking all the beautiful landscape and has an observation room that is accessible on the interior by a metal spiral staircase. The U.S. Forestry Service opens the tower to visitors one day a year during the “Big Red Apple Festival.” The city of Cornelia provides hayrides to the tower during daylight hours. Contact the City of Cornelia or visit corneliageorgia.org to find out more information.

Just outside Ellijay, traveling on State Road 52 to the Northwest, is a winding two lane road that ascends more than a thousand feet with sharp turns and pull-offs on both sides. Fort Mountain State Park’s entrance then takes you to the park office where you can get information about trails, camping, R.V. sites, and many activities, including hiking, backpacking, biking, picnicking, horse back riding, fishing, swimming, or geocoaching hidden treasures. Fort Mountain takes its name from a peak that has remnants of a stone formation around part of that peak. Stone piles may be formed naturally by the thrust that causes a ridge to crest during the mountain’s formation. However, these mysterious piles of non-native rock, many of them large, form a long discontinuous zig-zag wall that runs more than 928 feet and varies in height from two to six feet. The original construction and function of the formation as a fort is less accepted today and its origin remains unknown. Some scholars believe that the formation could be attributed to pre-Columbian native Americans from around 500 A.D. In this regard, it has been likened to a snake formation, similar to the Serpent Mound of Ohio, which held a ceremonial or religious purpose. The absence of religious artifacts supports this theory since it was common practice for Native Americans to take ceremonial objects with them when they moved. The ancient wall runs east to west and the alignment illuminates one side of the wall at sunrise and the other side at sunset as ancient Native American cultures often worshiped the sun. Holiday 2018 | www.mountainlakeguide.com
Early visitors referred to the formation as a fort, speculating that it was built by Hernando de Soto to defend against the Creek Indians around 1540. However, this theory was contradicted as early as 1917, as a historian pointed out that de Soto was in the area for less than two weeks. The myths of the culture who built it abound. Cherokee Indian culture speaks of a race of “moon-eyed” people. The moon-eyed people are a race of people from Cherokee tradition who are said to have lived in Appalachia until the Cherokee expelled them. In a 1797 book, Benjamin Smith Barton explained that they are called “mooneyed” because they saw poorly during the day. Later variants add additional details, claiming the people had white skin, that they created the area’s pre-Columbian ruins, and that they went west after their defeat. Another myth revolves around the Welsh prince Madoc, who purportedly sailed to America in 1170. The story contends that Madoc’s colonists travelled up the vast river systems of North America, raising structures and encountering friendly and unfriendly tribes of Native Americans before finally settling down somewhere in the Midwest or the Great Plains. A later development asserted that Madoc’s voyagers had intermarried with local Native Americans, and that their Welshspeaking descendants still live somewhere in America. These “Welsh Indians” were credited with the construction of a number of landmarks throughout the United States.
