GET OUTDOORS AND... Explore Georgia’s Highest Mountains, Lakes, and Waterfalls of Rabun County
If Outdoor Adventure is what your looking for this Summer – then Rabun County is your destination. Conveniently located just 90 miles from Atlanta this small northern corner of Georgia is bordered by South Carolina and North Carolina. All roads lead to wilderness and the great outdoors in Rabun County, as approximately, 60% of the land is in National Forest and State Parks, plus approximately 20% is held by by Georgia Power for Lake Burton, Rabun, Seed, and Tallulah. Rabun County has 148,684 acres which is some of the largest portion of 18 county area of the Chattahoochee National Forest. An arial view of this area reveals byways of wilderness with a vast array of high, rugged mountains, deep valleys and raging rivers. One cannot actually see the Eastern Continental Divide bordering Georgia’s 2nd highest peak, Rabun Bald; yet the ridges hosts over 60 peaks between 3-4,000 feet in elevation along the Bartram Trail founded by Rabun’s earliest explorer and naturalist in 1775. Rabun County boasts having “three Georgia State Parks” with Moccasin Creek State Park on Lake Burton, Black Rock Mountain State Park to the North and Tallulah Falls State Park to the South of

it’s border. The area has numerous hiking trails in both State Parks plus a portion of the Appalachian Trail winds through on the western border and a 37-mile portion of the Bartram Trail. Picturesque waterfalls abound and many can be easily reached by relatively short trails. Located in Mountain City off Hwy. 441 Black Rock Mountain takes it’s name from the shear dark granite wall that is visible from long distances. Within the State Park there are four scenic overlooks. The Cowee Overlook is the first on the drive in, and actually sits almost directly above the Ada-Hi Falls, but the falls are not visible from the overlook. The Nantahala Overlook is located in the RV parking circle. The Blue Ridge Overlook and Black Rock Overlook is adjacent to the Visitors Center and Trading Post. Visitors enjoying backpacking for day trips, hiking on the trails and fishing on the 17 acre lake. Near the State Park is home to the famed “Foxfire” Museum & Heritage Center. The project of Foxfire magazine was based on interviewing local people and publishing their stories, which inspired numerous schools across the country to develop similar programs. The museum offers a self-guided tour through the authentic village showing the trades of early settlers. www.mountainlakeguide.com | SPRING / SUMMER 2022
Visitors will see many traditional folk galleries in the area, plus refined rustic antique shops in nearby Dillard Georgia. This beautiful valley land is famous for it’s farmland and family-style meals at the Dillard House Restaurant serving the community since 1917. The Dillard family earned the title of the earliest documented white settlers in 1794 and legend has it that to make peace with the local Cherokee Indians gifts were given for all the land between two mountain tops. Located one mile east of Dillard is the Hoojah Branch Indian burial mound, which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Black Rock Mountain State Park is named after its sheer cliffs of dark-colored biotite gneiss. The dark granite wall of the mountain, which is visible and easily identifiable from long distances, makes it a notable feature of the park. It straddles the Eastern Continental Divide at an elevation of 3,640 feet and includes four other peaks over 3,000 feet in elevation, making it the highest state park in Georgia. Within Black Rock Mountain State Park, there are four scenic overlooks. The Cowee Overlook sits almost directly above the Ada-Hi Falls, park here and a short 0.2 mile walk will take you to the 35’ high falls. The Nantahala Overlook is in the Tent and RV parking circle. The Blue Ridge Overlook is on the road to the Visitor Center and the Black Rock Overlook is adjacent to the Visitors Center. These overlooks offer 80 mile vistas of the southern Appalachian Mountains as well as Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Plentiful

flora and fauna and impressive views make it one of the best state parks for the outdoors enthusiast in the state. Four hiking trails lead visitors past wildflowers, streams, small waterfalls and lush forests. The shortest hike is Ada-Hi Falls Nature Trail at only 2/10 of a mile. It takes visitors to the beautiful Ada-Hi Falls. The Black Rock Lake trail is an easy half mile loop around the lake and is mostly used by fishermen to access the water. The Tennessee Rock Trail is a bit longer than the previous trails, but it is still only 2.2 miles. This trail explores the northwest slope of Black Rock Mountain. A moderate climb ascends to the ridge, crosses the mountain’s highpoint on the Eastern Continental Divide and reaches Tennessee Rock with excellent valley views. The longest trail in Black Rock Mountain State park is the 6.7 mile James E. Edmonds Backcountry Loop Trail that winds over Scruggs Knob and Lookoff Mountain. www.mountainlakeguide.com | SPRING / SUMMER 2022

road trip to
Blue Ridge From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC
The town of Blue Ridge was once considered an elite health resort because of its pure mineral waters. Blue Ridge was founded in 1886 as a result of the arrival of the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad. Because of the railroad, Blue Ridge developed as a center of business and in 1895 the county seat was moved from Morganton to Blue Ridge. In the early 1920’s construction began on US Highway 76, further increasing access to this once remote area. The historical Main Street now features shops and small eateries where visitors can sit a spell on the rockers and benches along the way. Spend a day exploring the many art galleries or browse for antiques in the shops that line the town. Taste local homemade pies and jams from the areas many orchard farms. The weather in Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains is simply stunning. Blooming flowers and green grass carpet the hills in Spring & Summer. In Fall cool days and crisp nights are a welcome change after the warm summer. During the winter, our highs are in the 50’s, dropping below the freezing mark at night. Snow blankets our mountains 3 or 4 times a year. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, peace of mind, or a little excitement, Blue Ridge has history, scenic beauty, and a small town atmosphere with many activities. The Blue Ridge Depot & Scenic Railway- This historic railroad depot remains the central focus in downtown Blue Ridge and although the first depot burned, the present station was built in 1906. Enjoy a train ride from Blue Ridge to McCaysville and experience gorgeous foliage in the fall and a ride with Santa and his elves for Christmas. The train route consists of a 26-mile round trip through historic Murphy Junction along the beautiful Toccoa River. Baugh House- is owned by the Fannin County Heritage Foundation located at 411 West First Street. It is open to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 3:00. The home was built by James Baugh in 1890. Baugh was a brick mason and the bricks were made out of clay from the back yard.

Blue Ridge Inn Bed & Breakfast- This beautifully restored Victorian home (Kincaid House) was built in 1890. It has 14 rooms, 8 fireplaces, 12-foot ceilings, original carved woodwork, heart pine floors and claw-foot tubs. Located at 477 West First Street the Blue Ridge Inn still welcomes guests to stay. The Art Center / Historic Fannin County Courthousebuilt in 1937 after the previous courthouse burned in 1936. The courthouse is now the home of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association’s Arts Center where visitors can view the galleries see rotating exhibits. Lake Blue Ridge- The crystal clear aquamarine waters of Lake Blue Ridge make it one of Georgia’s most picturesque mountain lakes. The 3,290-acre lake and surrounding area offers boating, swimming, hiking camping, picnicking, water skiing and fishing. 80 percent of the shoreline on Lake Blue Ridge is in the Chattahoochee National Forest, managed by the USDA Forest Service. Toccoa River- The north-flowing river feeds Lake Blue Ridge. The river flows soothingly for about 15 miles north of the dam. The dam-runoff from the reservoir provides great trout fishing; fishermen should only wade-fish the Toccoa River below the dam when TVA is not generating electricity. The Toccoa River becomes hazardous quickly when they release, so be sure to check the dam release schedule before planning your trip. Morganton Point Recreation Area is the place to take the kids to the “beach” on Lake Blue Ridge. Located off Hwy 60. McCaysville was chartered in 1904 and was populated in 1899 from the creation of the Tennessee Copper Co. which produced copper, iron, sulfur, zinc, and small amounts of gold and silver. Two parks provide a nice setting for a peaceful picnic or play area with McCaysville City Park or Horseshoe Bend Park just on the outskirts of downtown. Specialty shops, antique stores, gem shops, souvenir and art galleries line the streets. Eateries and pubs offer outdoor patio or dining on the Ocoee River for a relaxing day to enjoy the scenic “twin towns” of McCayesville & Copperhill. www.mountainlakeguide.com | SPRING / SUMMER 2022
