Live the life you love without a body slowing down When you were in your teens and 20’s, it seemed like you would never have aches and pains, gray hair or need help standing up. Unfortunately, there is no fountain of youth to stop the aging process. BUT there are some simple things you can do to age gracefully and live the life you love without your body slowing you down. It doesn’t matter how old you are or what physical shape you are in, it is never too late to start working on your health.

HighroadsLiving.com Volume 8 • Issue 6 - Highroads Living 3

1. A very simple thing to start with is to add good old-fashioned, unflavored water, to keep your body hydrated. Without enough water, disease processes begin and your body can’t function correctly. Drinking enough water will also help if you are struggling with your weight.

Your wellness is our priority

2. Another much needed addition is proper rest. Getting a good night’s sleep or even taking a power nap is a great way to give the body a boost throughout the day and ward off fatigue. 3. Good nutrition is simple these days with all the organic and natural food choices most grocery stores carry. And if you are worried about your weight, try eating your meals with someone. It is shown we tend to eat less when we eat with someone. 4. Don’t forget a good supplement routine. If in doubt talk with your chiropractor, holistic doctor, wellness coach or even your health food store’s personnel and ask them for their recommendations. 5. And last but not least, get into the habit of daily movement. This can be an exercise routine that includes strength training (simple 1-2 lb hand weights), stretching, and some sort of cardio such as walking, biking, gardening, swimming, etc. And if you really want to work on range of motion and flexibility, chiropractic adjustments along with massage therapy can help you achieve better flexibility which will allow you to move and continue to be active doing the things you love. Maintaining an active life does not have to be difficult as you get older. In fact, most of the ideas above are things you already know. Now is the time to start creating good health habits so your body remains healthy as you age. John R. Grant, D.C. Grant Chiropractic of Blue Ridge

HOME SAFETY CHECKS:

Reducing Your Fall Risks

S

enior adults are at an increased risk of falling within their home or community settings. Often times such falls can result in hospital admissions, orthopedic surgeries, or even head injuries. However, there are ways to reduce your risk of falling by increasing personal awareness of potential dangers. Recently, my Aunt, who lives in Michigan, fell off a sidewalk while walking her dog, which resulted in a broken hand and the need for surgery to correctly align her fingers. Sadly, this is a common health risk among older adults. However, one way to reduce your fall risk is to conduct a Home Safety Check. The Home Safety Check includes the following: • Write down your daily activities around the home and reenact to observe potential fall risks • Remove any items you could trip on such as rugs, floor décor, and pet toys

• Increase the use of nightlights throughout the hallways as well as bathrooms • Retrace your trip to the bathroom at night (with good lighting) and remove any potential trip hazards • Be aware of any water spills from plants, sinks, tubs/ showers, etc… and dry immediately • Take time to assess potential hazards outside your home such as; stairs, uneven pathways and/or deck boards, crowded storage areas, etc… Falling can result in a significant health decline; therefore, implementing regular Home Safety Checks is essential in maintaining a safe living environment. One way to reduce your fall risk is to replace exterior steps with a ramp. Another potential solution is to install a bath bar in your bathtub or use a shower chair. To assist with your safety inspection process, Happy Heart Home Care provides comprehensive home assessments including safety checks, safety equipment installation needs, and basic home maintenance options.

5 REASONS DENTAL IMPLANTS will make you smile

F

or millions of individuals who are missing teeth, smiling is no easy task. The decision to get dental implants can prove to be life-changing.

If you’ve been hesitant or unwilling to smile as often

Dr. Natalie Wong, president of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), describes treating a shy 18-year-old man whose front teeth were knocked out in a bullying incident.

implants could be just what you need to start working

When the young man first came to her office, he wouldn’t even look up or speak to her. Working slowly over many months, she earned his trust and replaced his missing teeth with dental implants.

1. You’ll look and feel great. Dental implants feel, look,

“The expression on his face when he smiled, looking at his final teeth, it was amazing,” says Wong, who practices in Toronto and is the founder and director of the Toronto Implant Institute.

any differently than you do your natural teeth. You brush

“We change people’s physical state all the time. But when you can change someone’s mental state, that’s something impactful.”

dental implants can last decades. Many other tooth

as you would like because you’re missing teeth - either from birth, as a result of injury, infection or decay - dental those smile muscles a lot more. Here are five reasons dental implants will bring a smile to your face:

fit and function like healthy, natural teeth. Whenever you smile, you’ll know you look your best. They’re comfortable so you don’t have to think about them or care for them and floss them - no need to remove them for cleaning. 2. They’re built to last. When properly cared for, replacement options, including certain types of bridges and dentures, may need to be replaced as often as every five to 10 years, requiring a more significant investment of time and money.

HighroadsLiving.com Volume 8 • Issue 6 - Highroads Living 7

3. You can live life with confidence. Dental implants don’t slip or click when you talk, eat, laugh or kiss. You can enjoy everyday activities without worrying about your teeth. You’ll also find your speech is more natural. You just won’t have any excuses not to smile. 4. They protect facial bone and healthy teeth. Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to jawbone deterioration and other health issues. When dental implants are placed in your jawbone, they bond with your natural bone. They’re the only tooth replacement option that stimulates bone growth and prevents bone loss, as well as keeps your facial structure intact. Another advantage is that they don’t require grinding down adjacent teeth as is required to anchor bridges or attach partial dentures. 5. They’re more affordable than you think. At first glance, dentures or removable bridges might seem like a better deal than dental implants, given their lower upfront costs. But the full financial and emotional cost of dentures or bridges can run much higher than dental implants when you factor in ongoing maintenance costs, the inconvenience and time-consuming hassle of removing dentures for cleaning, and the need for frequent replacement. Add in health costs if your jawbone starts to deteriorate, and the social costs of simply not being confident about chewing, laughing, talking or living your life, and compare the costs again. Dental implant surgery is one of the safest, most predictable procedures in the dental field. But dental implants are complex, sophisticated devices that require deep knowledge and specialized expertise to fit and place properly, so it’s important to choose a dental implant dentist with experience and knowledge you can trust. Be sure to ask about your dentist’s training, specializations and credentials. You can also find plenty of additional helpful information on the consumer website at www.aaid-implant.org, including a Find an Implant Dentist tool to locate an AAID-credentialed dentist near you. Don’t let missing teeth prevent you from getting all the physical and emotional benefits that come with exercising those smile muscles frequently and confidently. (BPT)

PRIMARY CARE When was the last time you saw a doctor when you weren’t feeling under the weather? You visit a doctor when you have a sore throat or when you’re injured, but seeing a primary care physician (PCP) when you’re well is just as vital to your health. Yearly wellness visits with a PCP are essential to maintaining your health. Here’s why everyone should have a PCP:

A PCP HELPS KEEP YOU HEALTHY When you get regular check-ups, your PCP gets to know you better so he or she can help keep you healthy. A PCP identifies small issues by keeping track of health markers and keeping a close eye on them. If he or she sees changes from visit to visit, this may indicate the onset of chronic conditions, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. A PCP will also remind you when it’s time to get immunizations and important health screenings, like mammograms and colonoscopies. These preventative services can help you maintain optimal health by finding health conditions early or preventing them before they progress.

A PCP RECOMMENDS SPECIALISTS WHEN NECESSARY If your PCP notices something that needs to be further looked at by a specialist, he or she can suggest and refer you to a specialist who can best care for your specific health needs. Your PCP can also provide the specialist with your health history and records for a more seamless transition. It’s especially easy if both physicians are within the same health system. After you see a specialist, your PCP serves as the place where all your health care comes together. Your PCP will receive your records so your full health overview is all in the same place.

HighroadsLiving.com Volume 8 • Issue 6 - Highroads Living 9

A PCP IS THE KEEPER OF YOUR HEALTH HISTORY Over time, your PCP will develop a thorough understanding of your health, lifestyle and your family’s health and history. This knowledge and your health records help your PCP more accurately assess your health and diagnose medical conditions. That’s why it’s incredibly important to have all your medical history and records in one place – with your PCP.

7 ways to protect yourself from Medicare fraud

OFFERING MEDICARE WELLNESS EXAMS & WELCOME TO MEDICARE EXAMS 15 Health Centers, including dental, pharmacies, rehabilitation, diabetes education & behavioral health. Every year, many seniors are targeted by scammers who want to steal their Medicare numbers to do things like rack up fake health care charges and commit identity theft. These scams hurt seniors and other people eligible for Medicare, cost taxpayers money, and result in higher health care costs for everyone. The good news is that you can protect yourself from fraud and help Medicare stop scammers in their tracks. How to Spot Medicare Fraud The first step in protecting yourself from Medicare fraud is knowing how to spot it. Over time, scammers have become very sophisticated and advanced. One of the latest scams you should look out for concerns genetic testing. Scammers are offering “free” genetic tests and claiming Medicare will cover it - so they can get your Medicare number and use it to commit fraud and identity theft. Other Medicare scams include offers for free or reduced-price medical equipment, consultations, or health services. These scams can happen anywhere, including through telemarketing calls, health fairs, and even knocking on doors.

Last year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) removed Social Security numbers from all Medicare cards. Even with this change, people with Medicare should still guard their Medicare card and treat it like a credit card, check Medicare claims summary forms for errors, and be wary of any unsolicited requests for your Medicare number. Medicare will never call beneficiaries to ask for or check Medicare numbers. 7 “do’s” and “don’t do’s” to protect yourself: • DO protect your Medicare number and treat your Medicare card like it’s a credit card. • DO remember that nothing is ever “free.” Don’t accept offers of money or gifts for free medical care. • DO review your Medicare claims for errors and problems, including things like fake charges, double billing or other fraudulent activity, and waste or abuse. • DO visit www.medicare.gov/fraud to learn more about how you can protect yourself from Medicare fraud. • DON’T give your Medicare card or Medicare number to anyone except your doctor or people you know should have it. • DON’T accept medical supplies, equipment, or genetic testing kits from door-to-door salesmen or solicitors at a mall or fair. • DON’T let anyone persuade you to receive health care services you don’t need, such as genetic testing. Only make these decisions with your doctor. Reporting Medicare Fraud If you think you may have spotted fraud, you should report it right away. No matter how minimal the information you share is, it could be the missing piece to stopping the next fraud scheme. If you are a victim of fraud, know that you won’t be penalized or lose your coverage for reporting it. Even if you are not a victim, it’s important to report any fraud scams you encounter to Medicare. Report suspected fraud by calling 1-800-MEDICARE or online through the Office of the Inspector General. (BPT) - Info provided by U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

How AI is Transforming Life at Home by Thinking of You We all love the idea of having a washer, refrigerator or smart appliance that gives us important messages and guides our next steps. But not all smart technology is alike. The last thing you want from your investment is a gimmicky gadget that does nothing more than turn your mobile device into a glorified remote control. So how do

you identify the brands with game-changing technology that will be relevant and useful for years to come? The most advanced smart home technology is equipped with artificial intelligence and allows for a great deal of helpful tools to make your everyday life easier.

HighroadsLiving.com Volume 8 • Issue 6 - Highroads Living 15

AI and the vision of a more connected living experience were highlighted at the recent AI & Big Data Expo North America event in Silicon Valley, at which key speaker Samuel Chang, corporate vice president of LG’s Silicon Valley Lab, discussed the company’s innovations and its focus on improving quality of life. LG’s vision is manifested in LG ThinQ(R), the AI technology embedded into each of the brand’s smart products and solidified through three pillars guiding the company’s artificial intelligence aspirations: Evolve, Connect, Open. These tenets outline LG’s easy to use, proactive products and services that offer a connected experience through personalized and efficient AI for users with diverse needs and tech preferences in their homes. The goal is always focused on elevating the quality of life at home and beyond, Chang said, “so users can live free and stay focused on what matters.” Here’s a look at how this highly evolved smart technology equipped with AI is transforming how people are living. Easy, intuitive, effortless: Smart devices shouldn’t be complicated, period. Along with operability that’s practically self-evident and mistake-proof, well-designed AI should be smart enough to fit seamlessly with your existing smart home technology. So, if you have a favorite voice-assisted technology, your new AI-enabled appliance should be easily integrated into your system of choice. Personalized to your needs: One of the cornerstones of AI is learning, which means the more you use these smart devices, the better they operate for you. Because they use the data to learn your preferences and routine, they create a customized user experience that best meets the needs of you and your family.

Responds proactively: The most intelligent smart devices on the market also alert you of issues before they turn into fullfledged, costly problems. For example, ThinQ(R) on all LG devices is connected to the brand’s exclusive customer support program, Proactive Customer Care, which provides useful tips to keep the appliance in good condition and sends timely alerts about potential problems. For example, users can receive tips on when to clean the drum of a washing machine and recommendations on which detergent is best for their clothing. Uses energy efficiently: Many users of intelligent devices appreciate saving energy. Not only do AI-enabled products track energy usage, but some can also be programmed to maximize your energy conservation. For example, LG ThinQ(R) devices come with settings, such as Save Mode and Vacation Mode, that synthesize the analytics, sensors and usage data to maximize both your energy savings and pocket savings. These individual benefits of AI intelligence - from learning your behaviors to proactive alerts and energy savings - come together to transform your daily life! This technology streamlines your routine, takes the guesswork out of everyday tasks, and frees up time for things you’d rather be doing.
