5 ways to keep your home pest-free

N

These entomologist-tested products are formulated with botanical extracts and are free of added dyes, fragrances and harsh chemical odors, offering a great way to help protect your home as well as your summer plans from insect interruption.

If you’ve struggled with unwanted pests in the past, you’re not alone. According to a survey by The Harris Poll, 85% of homeowners in the past year reported seeing or having trouble with pests inside their homes such as ants, mosquitoes, spiders and cockroaches. So, what can you do to help protect your house from infestation? Check out these five tips to help you and your family defend against bugs this summer.

4. Plug up any holes While you may not be able to see them easily, insects are experts at finding gaps in your home’s structure to get inside. Any small hole around window frames, doors and vents can become an entrance, resulting in a bug infestation. You can remedy this by going to your local hardware shop and buying silicone or latex caulk. Use a caulking gun to seal the cracks in your home and prevent bugs from entering.

othing beats spending time in your backyard or opening all the windows in the summer for some fresh air. However, the warmer weather also brings about prime bug season, meaning you’ll likely have uninvited guests in and around your home.

1. Regular lawn maintenance If you have a lawn, you know it can be a chore to maintain it, but doing so will help reduce pests around your home that can enter through open windows and doors. Some bugs prefer the shade of tall grass, so make sure you’re mowing it weekly to remove any hiding spots. If you have bushes, trees or tall plants, trim them so they don’t touch your home, otherwise pests will use them as a highway to the indoors. 2. Check and replace screens Fine mesh window screens allow you to open the windows and enjoy the fresh air while still having a barrier between you and outdoor pests. However, screens will rip and tear over time, so it’s important to inspect them and repair or replace damaged ones before bugs can sneak into your home. 3. Use bug sprays If you already have bugs inside your home, you’ll need pest control products to deal with these unwanted house guests. Luckily, for the 65 million Americans seeking an alternative to conventional pest solutions*, new bug spray line STEM is rooted in nature and optimized by science to help protect families against pests this summer. Made from plant-derived active ingredients, STEM™ offers a range of insecticides effective against ants, roaches, wasps and more that are safe to use around kids and pets, when used as directed.

5. Remove standing water around the home Mosquitoes and other insects often thrive in cool, damp areas and will lay their eggs in standing water. Prevent swarms by taking a walk around the outside of your home and making note of any pools of water inside planters, buckets, bird baths, toys and other containers. Remove or turn these items over to reduce the risk of bugs populating near your home. Bonus: Use mosquito repellent Evicting pests from your home is well and good, but you’ll still need to protect yourself when you’re in their natural territory. STEM Bug Repellent Sprays and Wipes are engineered with plant-derived active ingredients like lemongrass, peppermint and rosemary oils that work together to safely and effectively keep mosquitoes away from your family, when used as directed. Apply these mosquito repellents anytime you go outdoors, and every 90 minutes following, so you can enjoy the sunshine without getting bitten. In using these tips throughout the summer, you can help create a bug-free environment that allows you to spend less time battling unwanted pesky houseguests and more time doing the things you love with the people you care about most. *OMNI Audience Explorer: IRI Purchase-Based Data Set. Using Your Mouth as an Indicator of Whole-Body Health

Poor oral health is common among American adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 65 million Americans have periodontitis, the most advanced form of periodontal disease. According to Harvard Medical School, people with periodontal disease have been found to be at higher risk for cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease and dementia. Incorporating measures to help protect you from serious health conditions becomes increasingly important as you age. However, many people overlook a key contributor to whole body health: the mouth. The health of your mouth is directly related to important aspects of your overall health.

Brush and floss. Keeping up on the basics is essential. Brushing twice daily and flossing at least once a day helps keep plaque in check and loosens debris that can promote harmful bacteria growth, causing bad breath and leading to cavities and gum concerns. When brushing, aim for at least 30 seconds per quadrant and use circular motions with moderate (not aggressive) pressure. When flossing, maneuver the floss down to your gums then scrape the edges of each tooth with repeated upward and downward motions.

Restore good bacteria. Crowding out bad, disease-causing bacteria your Bad breath, cavities, bleeding gums and gum toothbrush and floss can’t reach can help restore disease are all signs your mouth is not as healthy your mouth’s natural balance. as it should be. Fighting the bad bacteria in your mouth that causes these health issues and more “Oral-care probiotics are designed specifically to isn’t difficult, but it does require ongoing effort. balance the bacteria in the mouth, similar to how traditional probiotics work in the gut,” said Sam

Low, D.D.S., M.S., M.Ed. and professor emeritus at the University of Florida College of Dentistry.

“Oral-care probiotics can be one of the easiest and most effective ways to maintain good dental hygiene.” For example, ProBiora’s line of oral-care probiotics contains strains of good bacteria naturally found in the mouth that, when dissolved in the mouth, allow the probiotic bacteria to migrate to the nooks and crannies of your teeth and gums where they compete with pathogens, or bad bacteria. Adding the once-a-day lozenge to your oral-care routine can help support healthier gums and teeth, along with fresher breath and whiter teeth. Schedule regular cleanings. Like many health conditions, the earlier you catch a problem with your oral health, the better your prognosis. Catching and correcting small cavities is far less invasive than large cavities and other oral health problems like gum disease, which can be treated more effectively when they’re caught in the early stages. Aim for a dental visit at least every six months, or more often if you’re experiencing pain or other concerning symptoms. Yes, we are OPEN. Exercise is GOOD for you!

HighroadsLiving.com In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans are more aware of their health and wellness. Now, as social restrictions ease, you may find yourself stepping up your workouts, whether you’re training for an event or working to improve your game in a recreational league. 6 Exercise Safety Tips

Spray Away Sore Spots Controlling mild pain can help keep you at the top of your game, and a topical analgesic works fast to heal common pain brought on by fitness and exercise, such as pain in knees, feet, shoulders and backs. For advanced numbing support, ActivICE gel, roll-on and spray relieve soreness fast with ultra-strength 8% menthol that has anti-inflammatory properties to numb muscles pre-workout and relieve post-workout soreness. The gel also includes pharmaceutical-grade conditioners that moisturize for lasting protection and comfort to heal and relieve prolonged inflammatory pain. Put Pain in the Past When recovery becomes the name of the game and pain relief is needed after daily workouts or bodily injuries, home remedies like CURAD Performance Series small reusable hot or cold packs provide long-lasting chilling or heating relief for recovery from aches, pains and swelling. Cold packs work to heal bruises, reduce swelling and relieve headaches and general pain points while microwavable heat packs provide satisfying heat therapy to address sore and stiff joints, muscle cramps and tension. Reduce Impact of Knee Strain Weak, injured or arthritic knees can come from many sources, including tendonitis and a wide range of conditions that result in strain or overuse. An adjustable band can provide support for on-field sports and during workouts or everyday activities. An option like the CURAD Performance Series Knee Support has a universal, adjustable design that fits either knee for most men and women. Its adjustable patella support pad fits a variety of knee shapes and sizes, and a special antimicrobial layer helps prevent stains and odor-causing bacteria. Manage Pain and Relieve Pressure If you participate in endurance and strength exercises or certain sports, you may ask a lot of your joints. Kinesiology tape can be configured a multitude of ways to help reduce pain and improve blood circulation, as well as relieve tension and pressure. Providing support and relief while active, CURAD Performance Series Far Infrared Kinesiology Tape features infrared technology, designed to absorb and redirect energy, and may be experienced as a gentle radiant heat. The tape is latex free, hypo-allergenic and can be worn for multiple days, even when swimming or participating in water sports. Control Back Strain When your back is strained, your body and performance can suffer. A mild or moderate sprain can benefit from strong support and compression, such as the CURAD Performance Series Back Support. The dual-pulley system provides quick, uniform, custom compression with an easy, one-hand pull and metal stays for added support across the lower back and abdomen. The soft, breathable material is discreet under clothing so you can wear it all day long and hardly notice it, and the adjustable design comfortably fits a wide variety of body types. Make Family Reunions Meaningful

D

uring the coming months, families are likely to spend more time together. Reunions that have been postponed during the pandemic will finally take place, and once those long-awaited hugs have been exchanged, everyone can settle in for some overdue catching up. However, the time many families spent apart over the past couple of years means important conversations may have been put on hold. A family reunion is a perfect opportunity to share stories, reminisce and discover what matters most to the people who matter most to you. Sitting down with loved ones to talk about their lives can be richly satisfying. Learning about memorable events, favorite activities and valuable lessons they have learned can help bring you closer to loved ones

and get to know them in a different way. It can also help you create a meaningful tribute to a loved one when the time comes. Finding a way to start talking with a loved one may be the most difficult part, but once the conversation starts, it may be hard to stop. Consider these tips from RememberingALife.com, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) to get the conversation started. Start by sharing mutual stories. If you’ve taken a vacation together or shared a cherished experience, discuss that first to get the conversation going. If your family member is hesitant, share your own stories first so he or she feels more comfortable.

HighroadsLiving.com

Ask questions. One of the easiest ways to start and maintain a conversation is by asking questions. If you’re not sure what to ask, try inquiring about your loved one’s proudest achievement, the best advice received, a favorite memory or greatest inspiration. A visual prompt like a photo album, souvenir or memento can also be a conversation starter. If you’re comfortable with the idea, also ask how he or she would like to be remembered when gone. Take notes. Either during or after your conversation, make note of the important memories shared. If it won’t make your loved one uncomfortable, make an audio recording of your discussion so you can listen again later. These notes and recordings may become treasured heirlooms for future generations. Treat your talk as a beginning. Use it as a springboard for more conversations, during which you can openly talk about any number of things, from reflecting on the past to planning for the future. Designed to be a fun and easy way to help get the discussion started, NFDA created “Have the Talk of a Lifetime” conversation cards featuring thought-provoking questions. The things you discuss may be helpful when your family must make important decisions about how you wish to remember and honor your loved one after he or she dies. When the time comes, make it meaningful. These shared conversations may help your family plan a meaningful funeral or life tribute event for your loved one that honors his or her life while giving you, your family and other friends a chance to reminisce and say goodbye. When the time comes, memorialization can be an important step in the journey toward healing. When you’re preserving your family’s legacy, resources such as RememberingALife.com can provide helpful information about memorialization and other end-of-life matters. Family Features. Help for older adults on a budget may be a few clicks away

F

ood and gas prices continue to rise, on top of record-high housing costs in many cities across the U.S. If you’re an older adult who is already living on a tight budget, today’s inflation can be particularly difficult. Fortunately, there are programs available that can help you save money on health care, prescriptions, food, utilities and more. One of the easiest ways to find out if you’re eligible for benefits is to visit the National Council on Aging’s BenefitsCheckUp.org. The free and confidential tool connects older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers to benefit programs. The site is easy to use, even for people with minimal digital experience. “It only takes a few minutes to learn about all the programs available and how to apply,” said Ramsey Alwin, president and CEO of NCOA. “For example, there are Medicare programs that can boost your budget by helping with prescription drug costs, as well as premiums, deductibles and coinsurance.” There are thousands of programs on BenefitsCheckUp, including: • The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which can help you pay for healthy food

• The Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy and Medicare Savings Programs, which can help people with Medicare afford their out-of-pocket health care expenses • The Housing Choice Vouchers and Public Housing Programs, which can help with housing costs • Supplemental Security Income, which provides cash for basic needs • The Affordable Connectivity Program, which provides discounted internet services • The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which can help you pay for home heating and cooling Millions of older adults are eligible for, but not enrolled in these programs. In fact, NCOA estimates that $30 billion in benefits go unused each year simply because older adults don’t know about these programs - or how to apply. BenefitsCheckUp.org will give you a personalized list of benefits you may be eligible for and the steps you need to apply, including links to the correct government agencies and applications. Just a few minutes could save you money every month.
