STRETCH YOURSELF Getting older is not for the weak
If you have been on this planet for more than five decades, you have likely seen your share of injury, illness or chronic pain. What no one ever told you is that as you were convalescing and babying your injuries, you were likely losing both strength and length in your muscles. With subsequent injuries and the fear of re-injury, those losses compound over time. By the time we reach retirement, we are taking shorter steps (back and leg flexibility), moving our heads less (neck), and generally making much smaller and fewer movements throughout the day. Little chores seem more difficult. We suffer more fatigue and soreness after normal activity. Our joints complain, and we put it all down to “getting older”. But what if it did not have to be that way? Doctors have finally come around and have recommended exercise to combat some of these issues. No doubt you have been told to walk or bike or even lift some weights, but have you been told about the power of stretching? Stretching is a low impact way to lengthen, strengthen and move. By stretching, you can loosen the muscular tension that adds to joint discomfort. You can increase flexibility, so that your movements get bigger without pain. You can return blood flow to restricted areas and promote health and healing for injuries. So why aren’t you doing it? LEARNING HOW People often think that stretching is only good for athletes, or for yoga practitioners. Not true. In fact, for older adults, stretching is an essential part of healthy aging. But how do you start stretching? Stretching should not be something intimidating, and no one will expect you to wrap your foot behind your neck. Start simply with the stretches below. Please remember before you start anything new, consult with your doctor or health professional to make sure you are cleared for the activity. Move slowly into each position. Do not jerk or pull. Hold each position for 5 slow breaths. Stretch should feel slightly uncomfortable, but not painful. Try to relax on every breath when you exhale.

FORWARD FOLD While sitting in a chair, lean forward, rounding your back, as you move your hands toward the floor. If you do not have that flexibility yet, hinge at the hips and rest your hands on your thighs for support. SEATED CAT STRETCH Arch you back slightly and open your chest toward the ceiling. Let your head drop back slightly to look up and stretch the neck. If your neck tends to get painful, place a rolled-up towel around your neck for support. LITTLE TEA POT STRETCH Place fingertips on shoulders, and tilt slightly to the left then right. Keep your shoulders back, and your chest open. NECK STRETCH Sit up straight. Tilt the head back, stretching the neck. Then touch chin to chest. Look to the right. Look to the left. Tilt head to the right. Tilt to the left. If your neck tends to get painful, place a rolled-up towel around your neck for support. SEATED TWIST Sit talk in a chair. Keeping both hips connected to the seat. Turn to the right. Place the left hand on the outside of your right knee. Repeat for the left side. HIGH FIGURE 4 Cross your right knee over your left. Sit straight in your chair. Grab your knee and pull slightly. Repeat left side. LOW FIGURE 4 Cross your right ankle over your left knee. Place your hand on your right knee to deepen the stretch.

INNER THIGH Open your legs as wide as possible. Sit straight in the chair and place hands on knees, opening them slightly. OUTER THIGH Sit tall in the chair, with legs wide. Let one knee drop in toward the center of your stance. Return to the stretched position. Repeat other side. BIG HUG STRETCH Open your arms as wide as you can. Close them and wrap them around yourself, like you are giving yourself a hugright hand on left shoulder, left hand on right. Stretching may seem silly at first, or not even worth your time, but the benefits cannot be stressed enough. Less pain, more relaxation, and more movement all can mean better quality of life. Try some of these for yourself. But, if you feel like you want more hands-on detailed instruction, TheGym offers classes specifically designed with seniors in mind. Come check one out today.

Are Americans saving enough for retirement?
The answer you get to this question will depend on who you ask. The amount households have accumulated for retirement is not hotly debated, but the amount needed in retirement is. The Investment Company Institute (ICI) is working to make sure that everyone has the facts through its new website FactsOnRetirement.org. Much of the academic research and the ICI’s analysis of the retirement data indicate that most Americans are properly preparing for retirement, and with some very small changes, the retirement system can be even stronger. It might surprise you to know that Americans have accumulated seven times more retirement resources per household today than we had just over four decades ago - after accounting for inflation. As a nation, we’ve gone from $500 billion in defined benefit (DB) plans, defined contribution (DC) plans, individual retirement accounts (IRAs), and annuities in 1975, to nearly $30 trillion today. Those assets are widely spread too - eight in 10 near-retiree households have retirement resources, and retired Americans are more likely to get income from a retirement plan today than they were in the 1970s. IRAs, 401(k) plans, and other DC plans account for a large portion of the increase in retirement assets. Americans have now amassed $17 trillion in hard assets in these accounts. Combined with Social Security, resources from employersponsored plans and IRAs are helping retirees keep up their standards of living. At FactsOnRetirement.org, ICI points to a groundbreaking analysis of tax data that shows most workers
transitioning into retirement maintained or even increased their spendable income after claiming Social Security. We often hear that the decline of the traditional DB plan has driven seniors into dire straits - but that’s not true. Remember, those traditional pensions are designed to reward workers who stay for decades with the same company and end their careers at that company. Other workers may receive little or no retirement income from these plans. With 401(k) style plans, benefits accrue more evenly over a worker’s career and continue to grow as a worker moves from job to job - which makes them particularly well suited to America’s mobile workforce. The research shows that IRAs, 401(k)s, and similar plans can provide the resources workers need to live comfortably throughout their golden years. That’s one reason nearly eight out of 10 U.S. households have confidence these plans will help people reach financial security in retirement. In general, our retirement system works, but it can be even better if policymakers work to build on its strengths. ICI recommends putting Social Security on a secure financial footing for future generations, making it easier for employers to offer retirement plans, and encouraging innovative features like auto-enrollment to help more workers save. But as a first step, every American needs the facts. You can get them - along with tips to make sure your own savings are on the right track - at www.FactsOnRetirement.org. (BPT)

PERIPHERAL NEUROPHATHY A condition that usually begins in the feet and lower legs, but over time, can advance into the hands & fingers. Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves often causing weakness, pain, numbness, tingling, and the most debilitating balance problems. is damage is commonly caused by a lack of blood flow to the nerves in the hands and feet which causes the nerves to begin to degenerate due to lack of nutrient flow. As the blood vessels that surround the nerves become diseased they shrivel up which causes the nerves to not get the nutrients to continue to survive. When these nerves begin to “die” they cause you to have balance problems, pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and many additional symptoms. The main problem is that your doctor has told you to just live with the problem or try the drugs which you don’t like taking because they make you feel uncomfortable. There is now a facility right here that offers you hope without taking those endless drugs with serious side effects.

WAYS TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS
Natural disasters come in multiple forms and can quickly devastate many lives in a matter of moments. While they all can cause nightmares for those affected, few are as powerful and destructive as hurricanes. That’s why, when hurricanes make landfall and wreak havoc, help is immediately needed and accepted by the people and communities impacted the most. Here are a few ways you can make a positive impact for those affected by natural disasters, specifically hurricanes: START A FUNDRAISER One of the most potentially impactful ways to lend a hand after a natural disaster is to start a community fundraiser. This can be as simple as an online account accepting donations for a group of people and sending a large sum to a relief organization, or as thought-out as a large-scale event, like a raffle or dinner, accepting donations for entry. DONATE Money is typically the resource relief organizations can use the most during natural disasters, and it can also be the easiest way for people to lend aid. There are typically many trustworthy organizations available to donate to during times of need. PROMOTE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS After you’ve made a donation yourself, spread the word to others whether it’s via word of mouth, social media or other
forms of communication. Let friends and family know how they can join the cause. VOLUNTEER While it isn’t viable for everyone, some people closer to the affected region can directly help those in need with physical help at the place it’s most needed. Whether it’s passing out supplies, serving food to those displaced or other means of lending a hand, volunteers are a valuable resource following natural disasters. PROVIDE SHELTER Another option for people looking to help who are closer to the devastation is to offer shelter, especially if they have family members or friends who have been affected. Assisting at places sheltering the displaced is another way to provide help, if offering space in your home is not an option. GIVE BLOOD Injuries can be unavoidable when hurricanes and other disasters strike. One way to help those hospitalized or otherwise injured is to donate blood, possibly saving lives in the process. STAY PERSISTENT In the immediate aftermath of storms and natural disasters, the news cycle is dominated by stories of triumph and despair, and by ways people can help. However, the storm is eventually overshadowed by other, more recent news. One major way
HighroadsLiving.com Volume 7 • Issue 5 - Highroads Living 15
people can help after a hurricane is by continuing their support long after the storm has passed, as those affected will need assistance, supplies and donations for much longer than just a couple of weeks after the incident. As time passes, it can be helpful to continue donating money and supplies, committing to helping physically rebuild structures and promoting fundraising efforts. Find more ways to help those in need at eLivingToday.com.
STAYING SAFE THROUGH A HURRICANE While the immense power of hurricanes and tropical storms can greatly affect the lives of many in an instant, there are ways to increase your safety before, during and after the storm. These tips from the American Red Cross can help protect yourself and your family. BEFORE * Put together an emergency kit, including basic but crucial items such as: water, food, a first aid kit, cell phones with chargers, contact information for family and friends, flashlights, extra batteries, medications, radios, copies of key personal documents, extra cash and maps. * Working with your family, create an evacuation plan for your home. This includes discussing how to prepare and respond to emergencies, identifying the responsibilities of each person in the home and practicing the plan. * As a storm is approaching, stay tuned to local radio or TV stations for the latest updates. * Be prepared to evacuate quickly, and ensure that your emergency kit and other necessities are ready. DURING * Stay inside. * If power is lost, use flashlights in the dark rather than candles. * If possible, keep radio or TV stations tuned in for any new or developing information. * Because waters could be contaminated with sewage or contain other dangerous substances, avoid contact with floodwater. * If instructed to do so by local authorities, shut off the power and water mains. * If you must be outdoors, don’t walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Don’t walk on beaches or riverbanks, and don’t allow children to play in or near floodwater. * Stay out of areas subject to flooding, such as underpasses, dips and low spots. * If you must drive and are caught on a flooded road with rising waters, get out of the car and move to higher ground.

AFTER * Communicate with family and friends to let them know you’re safe. * If you are evacuated, don’t return until authorities confirm it is safe to do so. * Continue listening to radio or TV stations for new or developing information. * Be prepared for continued rainfall and additional flooding. * Don’t use water that could be contaminated. * If possible, help friends, family and neighbors who require assistance, especially the elderly, people without transportation, large families and people with disabilities. * When returning home, stay away from buildings that have water around them. * Stay away from dangling power lines and report them to power companies. * For insurance purposes, take pictures of home and item damage. * When cleaning your home, wear protective clothing like rubber gloves and boots, and be cautious. * Inquire with professionals to check for roof damage and other more technical tasks.
