T

he reasons for understanding the past are plentiful. Historical knowledge may illuminate the moments that shaped a loved one’s life or simply satisfy a curiosity about events and people that occupied a different place in time. A look into yesteryear can help make sense of the world today or even foreshadow happenings well into the future. Whatever the basis for your interest in looking back in time, there are many ways you can honor and develop a deeper understanding of history. It’s just a matter of finding the method that fits your interests best. Visit a museum or historical monument. These locations are rife with information, and often artifacts, that bring the past to life. You can find museums for all types of topics and interests, some with broad information about an event or subject and others that tell a story from a particular vantage point. Monuments offer a similar glimpse at the past, but they generally serve as physical markers of a particular place or event. This means you can stand exactly where the nation’s forefathers stood as they fought for liberation from British soldiers or take in the same sights as the pioneers who ventured west along a wagon trail. Explore written accounts of history. Historical books lend a diverse perspective on history, from factual accounts

of times and places to personal narratives that let you experience exceptional moments through the eyes of someone who was there. For example, “Sacred Duty: A Soldier’s Tour at Arlington National Cemetery” from publisher Harper Collins paints an inspiring portrait of Arlington National Cemetery’s elite Old Guard unit, as well as telling the story of U.S. Senator Tom Cotton’s time as a platoon leader there. America’s oldest active-duty regiment, dating back to 1784, The Old Guard conducts daily military honor funerals on the 624 rolling acres of Arlington. Readers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the honor and the challenges of duty at the nation’s most sacred shrine. Learn more or order online at HarperCollins.com. Let elders tell their tales. Though much of recent history is heavily documented, there’s no comparison to hearing first-hand how a person felt and thought as those historical moments unfolded. War stories, memories of childhood, tales from the first time driving a car - these are all experiences that looked very different a generation or two ago. Use special occasions and family gatherings to encourage the elders in your life to tell their stories and make notes or record those memories to cherish years into the future.

Senior Living in the North Georgia Mountains

Research your family tree. No history is as personally relevant as your family tree. Your ancestors hold the answers to exactly why you look like you do, and maybe even why you act certain ways. Online services make it easy to begin piecing together relations that date back generations. Visit a cemetery. You may think of a trip to a cemetery as purely a chance to pay your respects to the departed. While visiting grave sites of loved ones you’ve lost and leaving flowers or other trinkets are common practices, you can also learn a great deal from a cemetery. Looking for surnames you recognize may alert you to members of your family tree you never knew or seeing dates etched in the stones may help you piece together bits of family history. Digging into the past may be entertaining, insightful, inspiring or all of the above. You may be surprised by all you can uncover once you get started. How the Internet Can Help Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

O

ver the past 10 years, researchers have learned Alzheimer’s disease starts much earlier than the onset of symptoms - 10-20 years before an individual, family member or friend might notice the signs of the debilitating disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.5 million Americans, of all races and ethnicities, age 65 and older currently live with Alzheimer’s disease, which is expected to grow to more than 7 million people by 2025. The first-of-its-kind Alzheimer Prevention Trials Webstudy (APT Webstudy), funded by the National Institutes of Health, aims to increase the pace of research by enlisting thousands of healthy volunteers who can quickly be enrolled in clinical trials focused on preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Enrollees in the APT Webstudy can use the internet to help stop the disease while being alerted to changes in their own memory function. “In order to change the lives of the numerous people and their loved ones who will be affected by Alzheimer’s, we need everyone to get involved with prevention efforts,” said Paul Aisen, MD, co-principal investigator of the APT Webstudy. “The bigger the army of volunteers, the faster we can work to prevent this terrible disease.”

Volunteers can access the Webstudy when and where it is convenient for them, such as on their computer or tablet, or even a public library; anywhere they can access the internet. Volunteers participate in regular online memory testing. If there is a change in memory function, eligible volunteers are alerted and may be invited to a no-cost, in-person evaluation at one of the research sites across the country. “This is an opportunity for everyone to help future generations avoid the suffering caused by Alzheimer’s,” Aisen said. “With enough volunteers, we will be one step closer to seeing the first Alzheimer’s survivor.” Researchers are looking for a diverse group of people ages 50 or older who have normal thinking and memory function. Volunteers must be willing to answer a few questions about their family and medical history and provide information about their lifestyles. Volunteers will take online memory tests every three months, each one about 20 minutes long. If you are interested in participating, visit aptwebstudy.org to learn more. Take Control of Your Future Take Control of Your

OSTEOPOROSIS

W

e all know someone who has taken a tumble, broken a hip or a vertebra, and never really recovered. And you’ve probably said, “I hope that never happens to me.”

WEIGHT BEARING EXERCISE Weight bearing exercise sends signals to the skeletal bone that it must remain strong, and the body responds by laying down extra calcium to fortify the bones.

Unfortunately, statistics say that about 55% of Americans (men and women) over the age of 50 have low bone mass or osteoporosis, so the chances are high that it will affect you or someone you love.

Weight bearing exercises include: Walking, Jogging, Climbing Stairs, Jumping Rope, Playing Sports, Cardio Machines (elliptical, treadmill), Dancing, Cardio Dance Classes (Zumba)or anything that you do standing with weight on the head of the long bones. Weight bearing exercise can be classified low or high impact. Most exercises that are done without the aid of machines or include jumping or bouncing are considered high impact. However, If you already have osteoporosis or weakened bones, please consult your physician, as high impact could worsen your condition. Machine exercise like using the elliptical is considered low impact.

Osteoporosis literally means porous bones. If you cut a bone in half, the structure is a little like honeycomb, with lots of little cells. Calcium fills that honeycomb and strengthens the bone. In osteoporosis, the calcium that normally fills those spaces, has been leached out of the bone. This is most likely due to nutritional deficiencies, genetics, certain prescription medications (proton pump inhibitors, corticosteroids), and other environmental factors (alcohol, smoking, soda consumption). It is not gender specific, even though we most often hear of osteoporosis in women, men account for 20-25% of all hip fractures associated with osteoporosis.

Not sure which one is right for you? Start with the basics (walking) or machines and work your way up.

But here is the good news no matter your gender. Staying active significantly reduces the rate of fractures. And combined with healthy diet and adequate sunshine, therapeutic EXERCISE has been proven to increase bone density -reversing the disease and the associated risk

MUSCLE STRENGTHENING EXERCISE Muscle strengthening (resistance) exercise sends messages to your brain about the flexibility of your bones. When you move, your connective tissues pulls against the bone. Strong bone will not give way, but weakened bones give and bend. This signals the brain that reinforcement is needed, and the body responds by laying down additional calcium to the empty spaces to strengthen the skeleton.

There are 2 types of exercises that will help stave off osteoporosisWeight bearing AND Muscle Strengthening.

Whether you choose dumbbells, balls, bands or jugs of water, all forms of resistance can provide the necessary stimulus.

HighroadsLiving.com Volume 8 • Issue 4 - Highroads Living 11

However, folks who are new to exercises tend to prefer bands, as they are easy to use, and won’t hurt if you happen to drop them on your toe. The following is a short list of band exercises to try. All can be performed with an inexpensive set of rubber tube bands with handles, easily purchased at most discount stores. SOME COMMON BAND RESISTANCE EXERCISES TO TRY: Bent over Row: Stand with feet on a band holding both handles. Keep your back flat, shoulders back, and stomach tight. Pull the bands back, scrubbing the elbows along the ribcage, and pushing the chest forward. Chest Pull: With straight arms, grab a band with hands shoulder width apart. Stretch the band. Keep your shoulders back, and in line with your hands. Bicep Curl: Step on the band with both feet, grab both handles. Keeping the rest of your body still, bend the elbows bringing the handles toward the shoulder. DO not bounce or jerk. Slow controlled motion. Keep elbows squeezed into the ribcage throughout the movement. Lateral Raise: Step on band in the middle. Keep your knees soft, core tight, chin lifted, and shoulders back. Grab one end by the handle. Leave the other on the ground. Lift until the hand is in line with the shoulder. Don’t jerk or bounce. Do both sides.

Leg Press: Sit in a sturdy chair with a band around one foot at the instep. Bend the leg and remove the slack in the band. Push that foot out, pressing the heel forward to stretch the band. Move slowly an in control. Do both legs. Calf Press: Sit in a sturdy chair with a band around the ball of one foot. Straighten the leg and remove the slack in the band. Push the ball of the foot forward to stretch the band. Move slowly an in control. Do both legs. Osteoporosis and the resulting fractures that it can bring, may not be the scariest diagnosis out there, but it does not have to mean fractures and frailty. Now that you know there is something that you can do to prevent, maybe even reverse osteoporosis, shouldn’t you try it? Take control of your future. Don’t wait until you need rehab. Get active now. Try some band exercises or TaiChi or Zumba. Join a gym or just spend more time doing the activities you love... ...Your bones will be glad you did. PILL vs PLANT

America is saying, “not so fast” to prescription drugs Could CBD be the natural solution to your ailment?

F

or the first time in over three decades the percentage of Americans using prescription drugs actually decreased. While still almost half of Americans take at least one prescription drug each day the latest data supports a new trend emerging.

nervous system and immune system promoting balance within our bodies. This is part of the cannabinoid system found within all of our bodies that was only discovered in the last 20 years and the research on how this system impacts our overall health continues to grow.

In the midst of a culture that has historically popped pills at an alarming rate to combat our daily physical ailments, we are now seeing more and more people saying to the prescription pad, “not so fast.” This group of Americans is asking questions about the side-affects of prescription drugs and weighing their options accordingly. The result is more and more are now looking for safe and natural alternatives that do not pose the potential damaging side effects that many prescription drugs bring.

Sweet ReLeaf, the first CBD store in Northeast Georgia, opened in Clarkesville on March 1st and is quickly attracting a growing number of people in the community who are looking for a plant-based alternative to synthetic drugs. More and more Sweet Releaf is seeing repeat customers who are getting results by making a CBD product part of their daily life. Co-owner Bob Warren stated, “Our mission from the beginning has been to help people thrive, to help them live their best life. We believe that foundational to living your best life is living pain-free, enjoying the rejuvenating benefits of a good nights sleep, and living void of undue stress and anxiety.”

In the midst of this cultural shift, CBD products are fast becoming a popular choice. CBD or cannabidiol, is a compound found in all Cannabis plants. CBD is non-psychoactive (does not get you high) and effectively feeds the receptors in our brain, central

Lynne Warren, one of four co-owners of Sweet ReLeaf, remarked, “So many come into our store and

HighroadsLiving.com Volume 8 • Issue 4 - Highroads Living 13

say to me, please help me get off my pills. Many of them seem desperate as they are dealing with severe symptoms like pain. But they are equally troubled by the potential damaging side-affects to their liver or other vital organs that come with their medications. They just want a safe and natural option.” Tracy Pato, another co-owner, added, “We never advise someone to stop taking a medication prescribed by their doctor. We make it our practice to advise them to consult with their doctor before making any changes to their daily medication. But we are seeing an increase in patrons coming into our store at the recommendation of their physician. I think this is based on a greater understanding of CBD and the growing research behind these cannabinoid rich products. One of our goals at Sweet ReLeaf Sweet is to be leaders in educating our community about CBD.” All of the products sold at Sweet ReLeaf are derived from a cannabis plant known as hemp. The hemp plant is recognized for its high concentration of CBD. Based on the 2018 farm bill products derived from hemp are legal to possess in all 50 states. According to co-owner Rufino Pato, the 2018 farm bill was significant. Rufino said, “The new farm bill accomplished what was long overdue. This new legislation finally separated hemp derived products from marijuana; the result being that CBD products are no longer considered a controlled substance. We are excited to be pioneers as we introduce and educate our community on the benefits of CBD and hemp derived products.” If you are among the many Americans dealing with daily pain, sleepless nights, an anxiety disorder or chronic inflammation we invite you to visit Sweet ReLeaf and learn more about CBD. Sweet ReLeaf offers a wide variety of CBD products including, tinctures, topicals, edibles, vapes and more. They even have products for your favorite pet. Sweet ReLeaf is just off the square in downtown Clarkesville and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Break Away from Traditional Barbecue Fare

Burgers and brats have earned a spot in the backyard barbecue hall of fame, no doubt, but if you’re looking for a different type of barbecue, add some finesse to your menu with flatbreads. Set up a DIY bar. Let guests flex their creative culinary muscles and curb their cravings with a selection of toppings. Offer a variety of proteins, plenty of veggies, fresh or dry herbs, seasonings and a selection of cheeses so everyone can make a personal masterpiece. Ingredients can quickly dry out on the grill, so be sure to include dressings like pesto, hummus or herbinfused olive oil. Re-imagine favorites off the grill. A sizzling steak sprinkled with blue cheese is a classic barbecue choice, but try serving it on grilled flatbread for a new menu option that is sure to delight. To make a Steak and Blue Cheese Flatbread, grill a flatbread for a few minutes and top with hummus and flank steak to add a bright flavor and mouthwatering texture to your dish. An option like Sabra Hummus is available in more than a dozen flavors to complement your favorite dishes. Incorporate non-traditional ideas. While many backyard cookouts feature meat, veggies like corn, asparagus and mushrooms can add big flavors for those with different dietary restrictions. Choose your desired produce and grill until tender then add light seasoning for a fresh take on summer grilling with a dish such as this Vegan Garden Flatbread. VEGAN GARDEN FLATBREAD
