THE Spice IS RIGHT

Spiced cake is a recipe as old as time with some of the earliest traces of such desserts going back as far as the twelfth century in Egypt and Rome. What better way to capture the timeless nature of love and the warmth of its glow against the backdrop of Fall and Winter than by incorporating spice into your wedding reception? If you want your guests to be completely enthralled by all this season has to offer at your big event, consider choosing a spiced wedding cake, groom’s cake, or other choice desserts to share at your reception.

It is a common misconception that “spiced cake” is limited to strong tones of cinnamon, but spiced desserts can incorporate a wide variety of harvest flavors such as apple, orange, and pumpkin. For those looking for an even cozier flavor pallet that captures the warmth of getting married during the holiday season, there are also caramel-spiced cakes, chai, and flavors like Bourbon spice and buttermilk. Any of these flavors of spice cake taste decadent with cream cheese-based frostings, or frostings with hints of brown sugar, and of course any cake can have fresh fillings of fruit to really captivate the seasonal imagination of all your wedding guests, whether your style is rustic or refined.

Spiced desserts don’t have to be limited to cake options. Fun and unexpected treats like cinnamon rolls, mini pies, mini cobblers, souffles, and bread puddings can weave the flavors of fall into the post-ceremony meal. n

The most precious thing you’ll have post-wedding day bliss, besides a long and happy life with your partner, are photos to commemorate this event. Here are several trends to consider in order to capture as many priceless moments as possible...

DISPOSABLE CAMERAS

Sometimes the best memories are the candid ones captured by friends, so consider leaving disposable cameras on all the tables for guests to use.

CANDID SHOTS

In line with providing guests with disposable camera options, consider asking your professional photographer to focus less on highly stylized poses and consider asking for an abundance of candid shots that will be more likely to capture the genuine feelings and vibes of your ceremony, guests, and venue.

REELS

Memories don’t just need to be still photos; a popular trend is having photographers curate a series of reels for Instagram or TikTok-ready posts so that when it comes time to share your memories with others, the mix of music, video, and still images expertly captures the feel of your day so you can relive it again and again.

DIRECT FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY

Looking for a bold and dramatic look? Ask your photographer about direct flash photography, which creates high contrast in the lighting for an old Hollywood glamor and a high-fashion look. This style is perfect for evening weddings and indoor events and is sure to capture the warmth found in a fall/winter wedding. n

THE BEST TIME TO HOST A Fall Wedding

There is no good or “best” time to get married, but for those choosing wedded bliss in the Fall because of the beautiful backdrops the season can afford, the mild temperatures, and the cozy atmosphere that evokes thoughts of hearth and home. Here are some pointers for getting the most bloom and bang for your buck by popular outdoor locations.

FORESTS, LAKES, AND STREAMS

if you’re looking for full fall foliage in those classic colors of orange, yellow, and red, then you need to consider planning your ceremony anywhere between September 23 (the first day of fall) and midOctober. For most forest regions these are the months when the leaves can be at their brightest, guaranteeing you the watercolor backdrop of your fall wedding dreams.

ORCHARDS

If you are interested in getting married in or near an orchard to be extra close to fall’s bounty and the beautiful sent of its fruits, the window of opportunity is going to be much smaller, starting in the last week of September through the first week of October. Most orchards are businesses and when the crop says it’s time to harvest, farmers are at nature’s mercy, so plan accordingly.

VINEYARDS

Unlike orchards, the window for capturing a vineyard’s beauty preharvest is a little longer, extending from late September through early November. During this time, most vineyards have their own unique fall patina, similar to that of the trees, and can also still be ripe with fruit, allowing for some unique and beautiful photo opportunities.

MOUNTAINS

Mid-September through midNovember is your best bet for beautiful scenery if you choose to get married before a mountainous backdrop. Temperatures in the mountains at that time of year are also suitable for guests to enjoy the outdoors without being too hot or too cold. n

GiftsFOR BRIDESMAIDS

While your wedding day is special for everyone involved, your friends don’t need commemorative or kitschy mementos that become obligations to keep instead of memories to enjoy. Offer gifts that highlight the unique bond you share with each person, emphasizing the history of your friendship, inside jokes, or experiences shared. n

It’s easy to think all Fall weddings need to center around the classic colors and attributes of the season: the crisp colors and tastes of harvest or the ideas of fullness and family. However, there are some couples who love this time of year because it signals a time filled with the mysteries and magic of the macabre. If you’re a couple whose favorite part of fall is the spooky season, here are some themes that can channel your love of the frightful into a delightful experience for all.

Perhaps the most obvious aesthetic for a truly haunting night of romance would be the glitz and glam of a Halloween favorite: the vampire. Deep reds and black, satins and lace scream romance. Vampires are known for their taste of all things decadent and divine, so there is no limit to the dark opulence this theme possesses.

If you have an interest in or share a curiosity about ghosts and the occult, consider a Victorian-era or Parisian catacombs-themed event where skulls, skeletons, and mummies would easily fit among the decor.

Also consider researching the Gothic era in art, architecture, or literature for inspiration to make your glamorous day, one to die for. n
