Nantahala

“Land of the Noonday Sun”

N

antahala is the name given long ago to this corner of the Smoky Mountians by the Cherokee as they hunted and traveled the steep Nantahala River Gorge. They learned the sun would only light their way when it was Nun-da-ye-li — Nantahala — “a noonday sun”.

The Cherokee Indians are the ones credited for finding this region in North Carolina as they called their town, “Aquone”. If you look on maps along Wayah Road, you’ll see numerous references, but you won’t find it, as the area is covered with water now known as Nantahala Lake. The town’s demise, was just one as dams, lakes as hydroelectric power plants were built during WWII. The area has always been secluded, and in the early days of travel was unreachable without steep roads and swinging bridges. The mail was delivered by horseback, and there was no electricity until the late 1940s and no telephones until the 1950s. In 1929, Nantahala Power and Light Company was organized as part of the nation’s rural electrification program; the abundance of water in the region was ideal for hydroelectric power generation. Nantahala Dam was finished in 1942 and today is regulated and maintained by Duke Power Company. The lake is high above the Nantahala River Gorge at a 3,000-foot elevation - a pristine and serene lake with just 30 miles of shoreline. Many people enjoy fishing in the Nantahala reservoir due to the low number of boaters and the breathtaking scenery. Fish in the lake include Walleye, Crappie, Sunfish,Trout, Bass, and freshwater Kokanee Salmon. There are two public boat launching areas — the Rocky Branch ramp is on the east shore just off Wayah Road and the Choga public access area on the west shore. On Wayah Road, Lakes End Marina can provide rentals of kayaks, pontoon boats, fishing or ski boats and other services. Much of the shoreline is managed by the US Forest Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission protecting the lake from commercialization and preserving its beauty. The Nantahala is divided into three sections, with different fishing regulations for each, so please inquire for restrictions. The two Upper Nantahala from the dam to White Oak Creek is classified as Trout Waters. The Upper Nantahala offers scenic views of cascades and waterfalls and along the Gorge of Lower Nantahala is classified as hatchery supported trout waters. Wayah Bald, near Franklin, North Carolina, is a popular destination for hikers, especially in the early summer when rhododendron and azalea are in

Summer 2018 | www.mtnvacationguide.com

bloom. Its historic fire tower affords great views of the southern Appalachian mountains in three states. The Nantahala section of the Bartram Trail stretches 21 miles (a two-night hike) from the Duke Energy Power Plant on Wayah Road (above) to Wayah Bald. Hikers also enjoy the Appalachian Trail which is accessible from Wayah Road southeast of Nantahala Lake at Wesser. Nantahala Gorge is one of the country’s prime whitewater rafting rivers, and consists of eight miles of waves and swift currents. The trip down the river takes a little over three hours and is almost continuous Class I and Class II rapids, with an optional Class III falls at the end. Although Outfitter’s vary, the rafting season generally lasts from late March thru October. Nearby towns Andrews, Franklin, Murphy, and Hayesville have quaint antiques, galleries, plus other unique shopping. Local produce provides great restaurants in the area for visitors to try home cooking or fine dining and all are welcome to visit the local Wineries & Brewing venues that offer live entertainment on weekends. Visitors usally lodge in cabins or campgrounds and enjoy other outdoor recreational activities like Ziplining, Horseback Riding, Gem Mining, or riding the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad in Bryson City. The Stecoah Valley Cultural Arts Center is located off Hwy. 28 displays over 135 local and regional artists and hosts seasonal events with live music and dinner for a family-friendly evening. This wonderful destination in North Carolina is a must for you to come “Escape” to the cool waters of the Nantahala and enjoy adventure or relax in this legendary area, known for it’s beauty .
