www.mtnvacationguide.com | Spring / Summer 2019

Judaculla Rock is a curvilinear-shaped outcrop of soapstone with quarry scars and petroglyphs. It is located on a 0.85acre rectangular-shaped property, owned by Jackson County, approximately 60 meters east of Caney Fork Creek, a major branch of the northwestward-trending Tuckasegee River, in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Georgia (Track Rock Gap and Sprayberry Rock). In terms of stylistic cross-dating, the similarity between the concentric ring and cross-in-ring petroglyph designs on the boulder with patterns on ceramic from the region suggests that the petroglyphs over the Late Archaic soapstone extraction scars date somewhere between the Middle Woodland and Late Mississippian periods.

The petroglyph boulder occurs within an artificially created bowl-shaped depression. Today this is covered with mowed grass (it was previously cultivated as a corn field) and bordered on the west by a thicket of river cane. Slightly upslope and east of the boulder are a few smaller outcroppings of soapstone bedrock, at least two of which show definite scars left by quarrying for soapstone bowl manufacture.

Judaculla Rock retains a special significance to the Cherokee Indians, despite their mass removal from the region in 1838. Cherokee accounts link Judaculla, their slant-eyed Master-ofGame, with the surrounding landscape, including landforms, rivers, and Indian towns. The petroglyph boulder is on an old trail that linked the old Cherokee townhouse at Cullowhee, or “Juthcullah’s Place,” with Judaculla’s reputed townhouse within Tannasee Bald. From a traditional perspective, contemporary Cherokees continue to regard the boulder as spiritually significant.

Petroglyphs that occur within three hollow scallops suggest that their production took place after soapstone bowl quarrying had ceased at the site, a finding supported by similar overlaps at a smaller soapstone boulder in western North Carolina (Brinkley Rock) and two more in northern

Spring / Summer 2019 | www.mtnvacationguide.com

In 2013, Judaculla Rock was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

North Shoal Creek Falls North Shoal Creek Falls - The falls is not a steep one, but it is wide and framed in a beautiful setting, making it a popular spot for photographers. To get there is an adventure of its own, as you go through old logging roads to a beautiful spots next to Lake Apalachia. From Murphy, take Joe Brown Highway (SR 1326) and continue about 20 miles to the intersection with Hiwassee Dam Access Road (SR 1314). Turn left and go less than 0.1 mile to Morrow Road (SR 1323), on the right. Turn onto Morrow Road and drive 1.6 miles to Prospect Road (SR 1324) on the left. Follow this dirt road 0.4 mile to where an old logging road starts on the right side of the road, in the outside bend of a sharp left curve. Park here and follow this old logging road a few yards to a gate. An obvious path goes to the right before you reach the gate. Follow this very steep path less than 0.1 mile to the falls. From the base of the falls a twisting path leads downstream a few hundred feet to Lake Apalachia.

Recreation Fun with

Pickleball is played with a whiffle ball on a court with a tennis sized net. A non-volley zone (or kitchen) prevents volleys close to the net, and the serving team cannot volley the return of serve. These unique rules favor players with less mobility and allow senior players to compete successfully with younger competitors. The paddle is similar to a ping pong paddle in that it is solid and easily maneuverable with a turn of the wrist. The game itself is played on a court that is the same size as a badminton court

pickleball One of America’s fastest growing sports has caught on in our beautiful mountain communities. The game involves a court and a net, but it’s not tennis or badminton, it’s “Pickleball”.

Free Weights ~ Cardio Exercise Classes Racquetball ~ Pickleball “Personal Trainer Available” Precor Equipment Open Monday - Friday 6am - 8pm Saturday 8am - 3pm

Pickleball is enjoyed by people of all ages and athletic abilities thanks to its ease of play and straightforward rules. The game has become particularly popular among people in their 50s, 60s and 70s looking for an activity that offers good aerobic exercise without being as strenuous as traditional racket sports— and which affords players the chance to socialize during the game. Many teams also play both doubles and singles, as doubles involve longer rallies, lower physical demands and more opportunities for court banter. Pickleball was first invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington near Seattle at the home of former U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard. USAPA was organized in 1984 and by 1990, pickleball was being played in all 50 states. The sport continued to spread as it became increasingly popular in senior athletic events in the early 2000’s. Some of the Basic Rules of the game include: - The serve must be underhand and below the waist—and it must be made at least one foot behind the baseline, struck diagonally. - The serve must land within the opposite diagonal court. - Only the team serving the ball is able to score points, which take place when the opposite side fails to return the ball or commits other faults, such as hitting the ball out of bounds. - When the ball is served, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before hitting it back, as must the serving team when returning it. - Once the ball has bounced once in each team’s court, it is permitted to volley the ball (i.e., hit it before it bounces). - Games normally go to 11 points, with the leading team needing to be 2 points ahead to win.

Most local Recreation Centers in our area have Pickleball Courts with groups that meet and play 333 Ball Park Drive, Hayesville, N.C. 28904 tournaments. For more information on times call 016 Clay County Recreational Center 828-389-0368.
