Big Entertainment What’s it like to experience a small town feel with big city amenities? Find out for yourself. In between the regular festivals and remarkable downtown shops, there are hidden pockets of the world in the Mt. Pleasant area. The city comes alive in the summer with the annual Max and Emily’s Summer Concert Series. Coming into its 11th year, this mustsee event has featured national headliners such as Emmy Awardwinning actor Jeff Daniels, alt-rock band The Verve Pipe, and Central Michigan University’s own Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers. When the summer starts to wind down, the family-friendly events, including Movies by Moonlight, provide one last opportunity to enjoy the warm weather. Viewers of all ages bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and snacks for free movie screenings at City Hall. As pumpkin spice fills the air and the leaves begin to fall, head into warmer settings for karaoke, trivia, live music, and more. The Cabin, Hunter’s Ale House, and The Brass all have trivia and karaoke each week throughout the year. If you need more activity, keep your eyes open for specialty events like Yoga with Cats at Karma Kat Cafe, or a paint & pour class at Art Reach. As the weather cools, the Mt. Pleasant Christmas Celebration will warm you with holiday cheer as the lighted parade illuminates the streets of Downtown Mt. Pleasant. After the New Year work off the holiday meals at the annual Man vs. Mountain winter obstacle course in February. When the snow melts, take a quick trip down to the Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival. The locally made 6

Maple Syrup and pancakes will warm your bellies and fuel you up. No matter the time of year, leading attractions at the Soaring Eagle Casino will keep you busy. Enjoy world-class entertainment, including: comedy, concerts and a series of murder mystery dinner parties or test your luck on the largest gaming floor in Michigan. The outdoor concerts at the Soaring Eagle Casino are known to keep the good vibes coming all throughout the summer. Make sure CMU is part of your visit, where it offers more than 500 events annually. Attend world-class theatre events, watch talented dancers twirl, drink-in the elegance of the symphony, explore the next age of fashion during a studentrun fashion show or cheer on your favorite teams during one of many sporting events. Sip a cocktail on the green, join the roar of a college game, or lose your voice at a big-name concert. Don’t just see it for yourself — get out and live it.

Big Adventure Experience adventure by choice or by chance. With more than 1,000 acres of parkland, the Mt. Pleasant area is filled with opportunities to unplug. Start your journey at the Chippewa River, where you can master miles and miles of winding waters via river tube, kayak, canoe or paddleboard. Known as “Michigan’s laziest river” the Chippewa River is perfect for a leisurely trip downstream with friends and family. Just a step off of the Chippewa River find yourself in one of the many beautiful County parks. Deerfield County Park boasts over 8 miles of hiking and groomed cross country trails, two disc golf courses, many river crossings and bridges, a sandy beach and rustic camping. Northwest of Deerfield, explore Coldwater Lake Family Park, offering beautiful sandy beach camping and activity spaces on the shoreline of Coldwater Lake. Follow the Chippewa River back into the Mt. Pleasant city limits where the GKB riverwalk trail will guide you through four-interconnected, riverfront parks. Let the culmination of your river and parks exploration lead you to Island Park in Downtown Mt. Pleasant; A 50-acre park, circled by the calming flow of the Chippewa River. Set up a hammock along the banks of the river and let the kids explore Timbertown Playscape or have them cool off at the Spray Park. Before heading to your next adventure, cook-out at one of the many barbeque stands and covered picnic areas. For those searching for adrenaline, head north to Snow Snake for a Zip Line course offering more than 4,000 feet of cable and speeds of up to 25 mph. From the heights of the Zip Line, look south and you may be able to see the peak of Bundy Hill, Mt. Pleasant’s elusive mountain and the tallest point in Isabella County. Bundy Hill is only one of 22 nature preserves owned and maintained by the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy (CWC). Protecting over 600 acres of wild lands, the CWC offers a variety of outdoor experiences like no other; all preserves are free and open to the public to enjoy. Once you’ve made a choice about where to go to find yourself, be sure to stand still and enjoy it. Sometimes taking an indirect path leads you to new discoveries.

Big amily un What’s the hurry? We live life on cruise control, with plenty of hustle but none of the hassle. Welcome to friendly faces, abundant places and comfortable paces. Visiting means getting wherever you desire within five minutes, letting your kids explore without worry and filling your time with plans - or not. Sit back and relax or skip to your own beat in the Mt. Pleasant area. Try Papa’s Pumpkin Patch and find your way through its corn maze or take a ride on the pumpkin train or pick your own fruits and veggies. Just down the road kids can get active at the Mt. Pleasant Discovery Museum where they will be inspired by the hands-on environment to laugh, play and learn all at the same time. Slip on your ice skates and head to the I.C.E. Arena or get a little wild and crazy with a tumble at The Jump Station, where a trampoline park, foam pit, inflatables and more can turn an average day into a truly memorable event. The local Veterans Memorial Library offers after-school and year-round activities for all ages. Or take a creative art class through Art Reach of MidMichigan. There’s no better way to get some fresh air than hitting Island Park, which features a spray park in the summer and Timber Town available for fun and climbing all year long. When it comes to events, the Mt. Pleasant area offers unique opportunities throughout the whole year. Parks and Recreation puts on an annual Daddy Daughter Dance for some winter fun, and celebrates the Easter holiday with a Teen Flashlight Egg Hunt and a Great Egg Scramble! In the summer attend free, family-friendly events: Thrilling Thursdays for familyfriendly activities and dancing at a Max & Emily’s Summer Concert series performance during the week, and finish the weekend by getting cozy with snacks and an outdoor movie at Movies By Moonlight. When it comes to spending time with your loved ones, it’s the small moments that make the biggest difference.

Dave and Sue Keilitz Dave and Sue Keilitz know their way around town. As part of the Mt. Pleasant community for more than 50 years, they have the inside track on the best places to grab a bite to eat. Max & Emily’s is their favorite. “Max & Emily’s is an outstanding gathering place, bringing people in the community and CMU together,” said Dave. Dave starts most days with coffee at Max & Emily’s. He even had a sandwich named after him at one time. And Max & Emily’s caters all their parties. Both have top picks on the menu. Dave loves the Chicken & Dumpling Soup and Salmon Salad. Sue’s go to is #1 -- the Reuben. Dave says you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

Downtown Mt. Pleasant is the heart of the community. Downtown Mt. Pleasant boasts over 100 businesses lining the historic streets, including specialty shops, art galleries, eclectic dining, lively bars and bistros and picturesque parks. Here you’ll find big city amenities with small-town service and charm. Located in the heart of the city, Downtown Mt. Pleasant is bordered by Michigan’s laziest stream, the Chippewa River. Two of the area’s most scenic parks, Island and Nelson Park, outskirt downtown offering a local trail system with a variety of natural trails and cycling paths. In the summer, visit the Farmers’ Market on Thursdays and Saturdays, dance in the streets at the Max & Emily’s Summer Concert Series or get cozy at Movies by Moonlight. In the fall, ladies shop with friends at the annual Ladies Night Out in November and the year closes with the Christmas Celebration the first weekend in December. For every season, there’s a reason to be in Downtown Mt. Pleasant. For a list of all Downtown Mt. Pleasant events, visit the Calendar of Events page 10 or www.meetmtp.com.
