Big Entertainment What’s it like to experience a small town feel with big city amenities? Find out for yourself. In between the regular festivals and remarkable downtown shops, there are hidden pockets of the world in the Mt. Pleasant area. The city comes alive in the summer with the annual Max and Emily’s Summer Concert Series. Coming into its 11th year, this mustsee event has featured national headliners such as Emmy Awardwinning actor Jeff Daniels, alt-rock band The Verve Pipe, and Central Michigan University’s own Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers. When the summer starts to wind down, the family-friendly events, including Movies by Moonlight, provide one last opportunity to enjoy the warm weather. Viewers of all ages bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and snacks for free movie screenings at City Hall. As pumpkin spice fills the air and the leaves begin to fall, head into warmer settings for karaoke, trivia, live music, and more. The Cabin, Hunter’s Ale House, and The Brass all have trivia and karaoke each week throughout the year. If you need more activity, keep your eyes open for specialty events like Yoga with Cats at Karma Kat Cafe, or a paint & pour class at Art Reach. As the weather cools, the Mt. Pleasant Christmas Celebration will warm you with holiday cheer as the lighted parade illuminates the streets of Downtown Mt. Pleasant. Big Adventure Experience adventure by choice or by chance. With more than 1,000 acres of parkland, the Mt. Pleasant area is filled with opportunities to unplug. Start your journey at the Chippewa River, where you can master miles and miles of winding waters via river tube, kayak, canoe or paddleboard. Known as “Michigan’s laziest river” the Chippewa River is perfect for a leisurely trip downstream with friends and family. Just a step off of the Chippewa River find yourself in one of the many beautiful County parks. Deerfield County Park boasts over 8 miles of hiking and groomed cross country trails, two disc golf courses, many river crossings and bridges, a sandy beach and rustic camping. Northwest of Deerfield, explore Coldwater Lake Family Park, offering beautiful sandy beach camping and activity spaces on the shoreline of Coldwater Lake. Follow the Chippewa River back into the Mt. Pleasant city limits where the GKB riverwalk trail will guide you through four-interconnected, riverfront parks. Let the culmination of your river and parks exploration lead you to Island Park in Downtown Mt. Pleasant; A 50-acre park, circled by the calming flow of the Chippewa River. Set up a hammock along the banks of the river and let the kids explore Timbertown Playscape or have them cool off at the Spray Park. Before heading to your next adventure, cook-out at one of the many barbeque stands and covered picnic areas. For those searching for adrenaline, head north to Snow Snake for a Zip Line course offering more than 4,000 feet of cable and speeds of up to 25 mph. From the heights of the Zip Line, look south and you may be able to see the peak of Bundy Hill, Mt. Pleasant’s elusive mountain and the tallest point in Isabella County. Bundy Hill is only one of 22 nature preserves owned and maintained by the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy (CWC). Protecting over 600 acres of wild lands, the CWC offers a variety of outdoor experiences like no other; all preserves are free and open to the public to enjoy. Once you’ve made a choice about where to go to find yourself, be sure to stand still and enjoy it. Sometimes taking an indirect path leads you to new discoveries.

Dave and Sue Keilitz Dave and Sue Keilitz know their way around town. As part of the Mt. Pleasant community for more than 50 years, they have the inside track on the best places to grab a bite to eat. Max & Emily’s is their favorite. “Max & Emily’s is an outstanding gathering place, bringing people in the community and CMU together,” said Dave. Dave starts most days with coffee at Max & Emily’s. He even had a sandwich named after him at one time. And Max & Emily’s caters all their parties. Both have top picks on the menu. Dave loves the Chicken & Dumpling Soup and Salmon Salad. Sue’s go to is #1 -- the Reuben. Dave says you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
