T

heresa is a well known radio personality and has been co-hosting one of Houston’s top morning entertainment radio shows and now also the Midday Hostess for their All Request Nooner! Now, let’s hear a little from the woman herself! Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you got into the radio business. I am very FORTUNATE to have had such a long radio career. It’s been so long, I forget some of the “wow” music moments I’ve experienced. That is a “result” of being in radio since I dropped out of college. Good

TIP•OUT | MARCH 2012

times! Brain damage, maybe? I honestly heard a friend on our college radio station and thought, “Well HELL, I want to do that”. I drove about 2 hours for a job fair I heard on the radio, got an internship with a top 40 station in Kansas City and the rest was history. I love music, admired every female front woman, had no talent to do that, but wanted to do something involving music. Sounds kind of deep for radio, but music drives every emotion I have and I LOVE sharing that with people. I struggled in radio early on trying to “get my groove”, then someone told me, “You can never go wrong by just

being you”. I worried that I wasn’t girly enough and my personality was more brutal then other radio gals. That’s all true, ha, but it just came naturally from then on. Houston has been an amazing city to be in now almost 8 years. The morning show has been almost more of a second life, than just a gig. I’m just glad the city has been accepting of me pulling double duty with the midday show too. Thank god the rides not over yet. So Theresa, When you first started on the morning show what ideas did you have in mind for the Show

and how have they grown or panned out over the years? One of my proudest contributions to the morning show is when I decided to give away porn one morning because I was out of everything! Now it has become a weekly event, every Friday I change lives!! Overall, I was just excited that people were going to get to know me and hear that I am not scared to throw things out there. Who would you say were some of your biggest musical influences growing up and in what ways did they influence your life? Lita, Dita and Stevie!! I remember

her. It was her that made me want to be in music. It was more than studio produced boy bands or pleather outfits on stage doused in AquaNet! She had a passion for music that I felt was in me and it kind of came out. What are some of your favorite WOW music moments?.. yes I am going to force you to remember! I honestly tell people that I want to write a book one day. If I knew people would buy it, I would!! Some of the OH WOW moments were hanging out with Britney Spears and her mom in the studio at my old station. She ate McDonalds and her

chance to hang out with Aaron Lewis is still a WOW moment, he is one of my favorites. I told you ... I could write a book. Any scandalous memories you care to share? *hehe* I have an oath to all of my fellow hellions. I will not talk. I have been witness to some insane shit. One time in KC, The Strokes were playing and the after party was very Clock Work Orange-ish. I just remember standing there with industry people thinking, “WHERE THE F*^% AM I?” I’m pretty sure that’s the night my hair caught on fire and the smell was so bad it cleared out the bar. Now, Buzz Fest After Parties have been monumental. NO NAMES, but I walked into the bathroom once to find numerous feet in one stall. The door swung open and my quote was, “Ehhhhhh, ummmm Sorry”. Needless to say, It came out in the news months later that the band fella’s

“Never Ever Ever EVER let other peoples insecurities or actions stop you from what you want. Take every opportunity offered to you and enjoy the challenge!” marriage was ending. That was Awkward because I knew who his wife was and she wasn’t in the bathroom stall that night. Whoops.

watching Lita Ford, “Kiss me Deadly” on MTV. I was in 5th grade, watching her videos WISHING I could be her. (Haha) She is talented, ballsy and a badass Metal Head Barbie!! I have always loved Dita Von Tease because she is a porcelain doll of beauty and then you go behind the curtain and she’s got a warped mind. Hence her ex husband. Stevie Nicks, no lie, is my She-Ra!!!! I saw Fleetwood Mac in like 4th or 3rd grade and she was telling these stories about the music. I could go on for days, but her life, love, loss, all of it... Is in the music. I had to know more and read everything there was to know about

mom was on the phone. Eminem came in that week too, he was very quiet but they both were extremely awesome. Meeting Steven Tyler, Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth was SUPER COOL. I got the chance to stand onstage to watch Metallica once and that was INTENSE. I haven’t met them yet though, but was still a HOLY SH*T moment that I’ll never forget. Hanging out with Jani Lane of Warrant a couple times was a highlight now, I was abnormally young and loved hair bands!! Yet, he was so sweet and such a stellar guy, it was sad for me when he passed away last year having a

Do you think it was more your love for music or for the freedom that drove your passion to be a radio disc jockey? Both for sure, it is the best of both worlds. In the morning, I can elaborate more on topics, say my piece, start shit, whatever. The midday show is where I love to make it all about the music!!!! I call it FREETHERAPY to deal with the hassle and hell of being an adult. Do you have any words of encouragement to share with any young ladies out there who maybe share some of the same fears you had going into the business? For example; feeling self conscious about the sound of their voice, or not thinking they fit the “mold” for what a personality should be, etc.

YES!!! I struggled with radio in the beginning and just couldn’t “get it”. One day, a seasoned radio vet told me, “You can’t go wrong T with just being you”. I was trying to be the females I heard on the radio. I thought I was too harsh and brutal to appeal to anyone. That might be true, but once I started just being ME...radio came easy. People don’t all agree with me, but I am real and I am honest. You guys get the real me on the radio. I am a nutcase and am okay with that. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING: Never Ever Ever EVER let other peoples insecurities or actions stop you from what you want. Take every opportunity offered to you and enjoy the challenge! Any fun facts you’d like to share for our ladies out there about your cohost the infamous Rod Ryan? Remember that “OATH” I mentioned earlier? Right!!!!! I do think it’s funny people assume we are always with the other. I have been standing in line at Target before and someone will come up and say, “Hey, Theresa, love The Buzz, where is Rod?”. They will actually look around me hoping he is next to me picking out gum. I usually say, “He’s in my trunk”. Just for fun, if you had a mascot what would it be and why? A UNICORN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to make a Pink Glitter Unicorn Beer Bong trophy and give it away to people on the air during the All Request Nooner. “The Best Request and winner of the Pink Glitter Unicorn Beer Bong goes too...”! It would be magical. One Day! What is your idea of the perfect date? Oh man! I like live shows! I love smaller venue concerts especially. Bring me to a LIVE SHOW, lets drink Beer, then go to Mortons after for some steak, wine and post concert music chatting! Since concerts are kind of my gig, I enjoy going to shows I would never normally be at. Once, I was asked to see A David Gray show. It was amazing!!!!! A+ to him and he tolerated my crazy! That helps. Well according to the ratings everyone obviously loves your brand of crazy, including us here at Tip Out! Thank you so much Theresa for your time it’s been a pleasure getting to learn a little about what goes on behind the scenes of Houston’s #1 radio station and even some fun facts about your own crazy life! Everyone be sure to check her out on the air at 94.5 FM The Buzz Co-Host 6-10 a.m. and Midday Hostess Cupcake 10 a.m.-3 p.m and keep your ears tuned for more info on the next Buzzfest for a rockin’ good time! JOHN DEVILMAN

T

his month’s Tip Out Ink is one for the books! With his own abbrasive, unique, and somewhat cocky, but sincere personality John Devilman is my pick of the month. A hidden treasure nonetheless. This”scratcher” as he refers to himself and majority of tattoo artists has some of the most incredible talent seen that he humbly hides behind his sarcasm and poking fun of this ever growing industry. Furthermore, one of the most interesting, entertaining, and charming fellas I’ve come accross. Unlike most artists Devilman accidentally got started in tattooing. Already a street artist, his trade began due to necesity, homeless and with not a dollar to his John would quickly jump at the offer by a local shop owner to apprentice at his

shop. This with the help of his dear friend was his start. Successfully completing his 2 week intership he would be on his way to become one of the best. He recalls his humble beginnins in an end era where bikers, military personel, and gang hangers were rattled. “Mind you, when Goldberg tattoos were all the rage”, he explains. Known by some of the fans of his

By Vix Rod ing, promo strategies and free lancing. Tattooing out of the comfort of his own home, is where he feels most comfortable, and oddly enough doesn’t scare away his clientele. It got most interesting at the moment when I asked him how he felt about the industry right now. His response more than shocking was refreshing, and perhaps one if the most sincere ones I’ve gotten... “I could bitch and moan

work for his amazing recreation of portraits, and detail on his pieces he is one of the few artists that can still make a living with no market-

and wax poetic about how this industry has become over-saturated with scratchers looking to make a quick buck off of what seems to be a trending occupation for people who couldn’t develop their artistic powers passed their best in art in high school syndrome.” One of most unique physical qualities considering his occupation is the very noticeable non tattoed skin and he explains the reasons as to why this won’t change...

“I never want tattoos. I don’t like most tattoo art. I think most all original tattoo art translated to other media, (paintings, drawings, etc) is garbage that artists recreate from other artists who did the same thing from someone else who had the artistic merit of a kindergartener producing refrigerator art. That’s not to say that I feel this way about all artists, just most of them.” As he brings it down a nodge and with obvious sincerity he states taking much pride in what he does and proud of the fact that he is not just some “slimy snake-oil salesman or hustler who tries to make a buck off of someone”. This aspired actor/writer enjoys the liberty that tattooing gives him to travel the world, and the know with this talent he can earn a living anywhere he chooses to be. Love him or hate him

without a doubt his talent is obvious. The dedication and the gift he has speaks for itself by simply looking at his work. With his growing clientele, followers John Devilman delivers high quality tattoos and I’m certain many laughs in the process. TO

“I really enjoy playing the chameleon, and being able to look like a completely different woman in my photos.” Where were you born and raised? I was born in Dallas, TX but raised in the tiny east Texas town of Mabank. There was one stoplight and everybody knew your business. Growing up were there any people that helped influence your decision on getting a tattoo? I didn’t know a single person with a tattoo growing up, NOT A ONE. I was raised in a very conservative home and even the thought of getting a tattoo was absurd. I remember telling my mother that I was going to get ‘Mama Tried’ tattooed on my arms and she would say, “Krystyn Lea, you better not.” When I actually did she cried, but now she is really proud of that one specific tattoo. What made you decide to take the plunge and get your first one? I got my first tattoo when I was 18 and it was tiny!! A little pitchfork with a halo swinging off of it, that tattoo has since been covered up. I gained a trampstamp, a horrible shoulder piece and a few little neck tattoos along the way, but I waited a few years to start my arms. Who has done most of your work? 97% of my tattoos were done by Clamore Wolfmeyer of Black Label Tattoo Co. in Frederick, MD. I have a small little jammer done by Oliver Peck of Elm St. Tattoo in Dallas,TX and my thigh piece is

from CMFL here in Houston. How did you get into modeling? I was agency represented when I was younger but stopped modeling when I graduated high school. I didn’t get back into the industry until a few years had passed and ‘alternative’ models were becoming somewhat mainstream. You have a very versatile look. Is there a particular style that you prefer when doing shoots? I owe all that to smoke and mirrors. I really enjoy playing the chameleon, and being able to look like a completely differ-

ent woman in my photos. I don’t prefer any look over the others, every style is exciting and I love to play the part cast. What projects are you working on currently? I have a few worldwide tattoo publications coming out towards the summer and I am shooting for a few clothing lines as well. I see that you’re involved with the SPCA of Texas. Have you always been a big animal lover? I definitely have always been an animal lover. I currently have two Sphynx

cats, they are hairless and adorable. I have rescued numerous pets over the years from ditches to organizations and recommend adoption over purchasing from a breeder. Remember, the first step to “no-kill” is no birth!! Spay and neuter your pets!! Can we expect to see more from you in the future? I don’t try to overload myself with modeling, it’s a lot of fun but my number one priority is my family. You’ll see me here and there, just keep your eyes peeled. TO

t’s that time of year, where love is in the air…. That and exhaust!! Forget about Valentine’s Day, it’s Car Show Season in Texas! The months ahead promise fun times with friends, hot rods, killer music and a cold Lonestar in your hand. If that’s not love I’m not sure what is. Kicking off the season is the 4th Annual Texas Hoedown on March 3rd, 2012. This event is so much for than a Carshow, there’s an entire day of fun including, roller derby, swap meet, tattoo artists, Live Music by Sam Navarro & the Lonestar Devils and other local bands, Fashion Show by Red Rocket and tons of eye candy in the form of hot rods, customs, muscle cars and traditional choppers and bobbers. For the entire lineup and festivities make sure you check out their website: www.thehoedown.com One of the biggest attractions to the Hoedown is their Pin-Up Pageant! Bombshells from all over the state gather to compete for the Grande title of Miss Texas Hoedown. Not only does she take away some serious bragging rights but she wins an exclusive photo shoot with Houston’s own Premiere Pin-Up Team, Photographer Angela Morales and Makeup Artist, Angel Jagger. The complete prize package is valued at well over $1,000 including a cash prize. So grab your wiggle skirt ladies! It’s time to compete!! In fact, I am still accepting submissions so for those of you who are still on the fence, here’s a bit of advice on competing in a Pin-Up Pagent! First and foremost, have FUN! Believe me; I know it can be stressful to be on a stage while others just stare at you but if you’re not having fun why the heck even sign up.

PIT STOP

It goes without saying that a Smile goes a long long way as well. Selecting what you are going to wear that day is definitely important. Make sure you check out some of our local shops for great vintage or retro inspired wear. Some of my favorites are Red Rocket, Replay on 19th, Vamp Vintage, The Haunted Heel and Retropolis. In a sea of cherries and polka dots, try your best to Stand Out! Want a retro inspired updo? Definitely check out Kats Meow Salon for the most authentic techniques! And even though it’s great to look the part, personality is definitely the way the cream rises to the top! I love it when a girl doesn’t take herself too serious on stage. Engage the audience by making eye contact with them and don’t be afraid to be funny and silly! Like good ole Mae West said ““It is better to be looked over than overlooked.” So jump on that stage and own it! I can’t wait to see all of the beautiful ladies that grace our stage on March 3rd. For more details email me directly at missvhaventx@yahoo.com. Other events you will be sure to check out are: February 14th- Ruby Revue Burlesque Troup at the House of Blues February 18th- Rockabilly Riot by Big E Productions featuring the BellFuries & Modern Don Juans at the Continental Club. Record Round Up- First Friday of every month at the Pachinko Hut. DJ Mexican Blackbird spinning the greatest in solid gold!

NO SUCH THING

eing a so called “advocate” for the Houston music scene is suppose to mean that I have to have some sort of hate towards Austin right? Wrong! No Such Thing is technically from Austin but in my heart I truly believe they are meant for me and Houston. Houston’s music scene is perfect this band that includes: Ryan Hegefeld with vocals, Corbin Lanmon on bass, Johnny Mike on guitar, Michael Alexander on drums and Dan Snell on Keys. A little birdie told me that Austin has become too “indie” and these guys are somewhat “outcasts” with their blend of rock. I firmly believe Austin is lucky to have them and I would gladly kidnap them in a heartbeat. I first met these guys at a little event called Uproar Festival. Honestly, I had never heard of them and I didn’t hear them at the festival but was lucky

18 |

TIP•OUT | MARCH 2012

enough to meet and interview them. As a bonus, I received a free cd. As soon as I was diving home I decided to actually listen to what they had to offer. What I found is that they freakin rock!!!!. Each person has a certain type of music they tend gravitate to. No Such Thing has that power that can draw you in, no matter how hard or how soft you want to rock. Each song on “This One’s For You” has the exact amount of muscle for anyone. As you listen to their cd u will automatically notice each song as the right amount of power in each song. The whole cd is like a wavelength to me. Ironic, I know but each song gives you the feeling of a roller coaster ride that u don’t want to get off of. The songs tease you in a sense. You keep waiting for them to just rip it up and just go crazy. In some songs they do but you have to keep listening for it and when you hear it, you

feel a release of complete satisfaction. Surprisingly, my favorite song on the cd is “Oceans”. This song is one of the slowest songs on the cd. The song is just beautifully written and a perfect example of the roller coaster ride that I will keep paying to ride. Just because I have a favorite, doesn’t mean there is one single song I dislike because, well, I am obsessed with every song which is so damn hard to find these days. When people actually went to go buy cd’s, it would suck when the cd only had one or two decent songs on it. “This One’s For You” isn’t that cd. It isn’t that cd you barely jam in the car either. Every time I listen to it, for some reason I have to crank up my radio and completely embarrass myself with singing out loud in my car. Its just better when its blasting out of my speakers . Now Houston was recently blessed to have these guys in town for a

show, alongside my guilty pleasure band, Versecity. I, of course, was in attendance and let me tell you that seeing No Such Thing live should be on your bucket list. Too many bands get exposed when they do live shows. When I say exposed, I don’t mean the good kind. Every song I heard live basically sounded like what I hear when I’m in my car. That is ridiculous and so awesome at the same time. I am def honored to have found out about this band and will continue to see them every time they come to Houston. If only I could come up with a plan to make them stay here? I will work on that idea while you go check out their cd. It’s a gift from them to you that u will admire, love and respect. So please check out there music on facebook, reverbnation and wherever you can and beg these guys to come back to Houston. Tell them Ashley Gunter sent ya! TO

VAIN IN VOGUE

WHY WE LOVE PINUP

Leila Cetina: I enjoy pin-up culture and modeling because it truly appreciates women with curves and confidence! It’s pretty hard not to feel super sexy rocking bright red lipstick and vintage style lingerie! Kassidy Menace: I love Pin up fashion because it’s like playing dress-up! I love to get all dolled up with fancy hair and makeup and wear awesome retro designs, it makes me feel classy! I am usually drawn to nautical pieces like anchors and stripes. I also love pencil skirts but have absolutely fallen in love with this beautiful red wrap dress with a petticoat you can find at The Haunted

Heel which is something different for me but it made me feel glamorous like a modern day Marilyn Monroe. Al E. Cat: I love pinup fashion because it lets me accentuate what I want on my body. I can wear a nice pencil skirt to show off my legs and behind, or a nice halter to draw attention to my chest. In reality, it allows you to be sexy without being too revealing. I like the mix of modern sexy with old school conservative. Sarah Sacrifice: I like Pin Up fashion because it’s classy but still sexy you don’t see a lot of that these days in the fashion world. It makes me feel like a true lady and feminine because

it’s most honest and beautiful moment. John Kincaid: Pin-up style photography is a glamour form of art that is refreshing to me, in this age of total nudism and pornography. America was just starting to appreciate the female form in the late 40’s and 50’s, so models started showing bare shoulders, cleavage and midriffs. Dresses were hiked to the hip. Images were more suggestive but modesty was still maintained. The female form was turned more profile, to clearly demonstrate her natural curves. I enjoy pin-up style for these reasons - I want to be provocative and suggestive with my images, yet maintain a modern modesty.

Now from the other side of the camera, a little about why and what it is these photographers love about shooting Pin Up!

Photo by John Kincaid Photo by Carolina Quesquen

Brenda Bare: I am most often drawn to the sexy wiggle dresses and don’t forget the sky high stilettos! If they aren’t five inches tall they aren’t worth the effort! I also love pin up lingerie- it gives you the chance to show off your figure but still leaves something to the imagination! It is completely feminine and classy and sexy at the same time. The “pin up culture” is very small in Houston and once you find your way in, it is one of the more fun scenes out there! Forget about the normal weekends that everybody is so tired of and welcome a little Johnny Cash and red lipstick in instead!

all the clothing is designed to show all of the best qualities of a woman without showing it all. I could wear a vintage inspired dress to church and feel classy or out with the girls and feel sexy.

For this months edition of Vain in Vogue I decided to take it on the road and find out what is we love so much about the Pin Up fashion, culture and why it makes us women feel so confidently sexy! Who better to ask than some of our favorite local gals? With a little help from my friends David and Lisa Beselt over at The Haunted Heel, we got some of Houston’s favorite sweethearts dressed to impress in some super sexy vintage inspired garments. Now let’s hear a little about how it made them feel to slip into these classic threads…

By Sabrina Sin

Carolina Quesquen: Pin up which is now also known as Boudoir Photography, can truly be an amazing experience for anyone. I believe it’s something that everyone should experience at least once in their lives, whether they’re shy, outgoing, young, old, tall or short. It’s an experience that allows your true inner self to come out and express itself in ways you never thought possible, revealing that intimate portrait with thought provoking emotions. Creating an entire conceptualized pin up session is a way to share a vision and create art to reveal the human form in

Richard Priest: I love the fusion of the old and new and the passion and seriousness of the pin up model. And now a quote from my personal favorite and the Queen of Pin Up herself… “I never kept up with the fashions. I believed in wearing what I thought looked good on me.” –Bettie Page I would have to say I agree with each and every one of them! There is something classy yet sensual about the Pin Up fashion, elegant yet sexy. For me personally Pin Up inspires a sense of freedom in me to feel feminine without feeling exposed. If you’d like to slip into your own vintage inspired threads check out some of these great boutiques located right here in Houston! Vamp Vintage Wear, Red Rocket, and of course The Haunted Heel who I’d like to extend a special thanks for kindly hosting our get together by opening their store to us and allowing us to experience their fine vintage inspired garments, we will definitely be back!
