Don't Powerpoint Me, Bro!

Don’t PowerPoint me, bro’! Dave Underwood

PowerPoint gets a lot of bad press.

Conclusions • Evidence assumptions murky • More trials needed • Timeframe inadequate • Skewed warping • In other words, there were lots of bad presentations before PowerPoint

Typography

Typefaces are divided into three general families:

San serif:

Serif:

No “appendage” or “slab” at the end of the letterform.

A small “appendage” or “slab” at the end of the letterform.

Cute, silly, playful, dramatic. Don’t use these fonts!

San serif typefaces are best for PowerPoint

Good rules for using type Use at least 24 pt type. Size type to establish a hierarchy. Use standard fonts. Don’t use outlined or underlined type. NEVER USE ALL CAPS. Type is always easier to read when set flush left. Centered type is very hard to read.

Laying out type Use no more than 4 - 7 lines per slide. As much as possible, maintain consistency. Break lists into columns if necessary.

Color

Color should be used to highlight and to focus.

Match the intensity of color inversely to the amount of coverage.

Color schemes should be based on contrast, not hue.

Gradient, textured, or photographic backgrounds are non-nutritious and high in fat.

Layout and design

Use a template to keep families of information in easy-to-locate places.

Limit yourself to 7 lines of text per slide. This depends on the size of the room, of course. Less type means more white space, which “invites” the audience into your slide. Less type means less searching. Less searching means more attention can be paid to the speaker. This is 28pt. type. That’s plenty for this slide, don’t you think?

This is another great device. This is also another nice use of color. If you absolutely must build a long list, try this. Alternate colors between lines of text. This will make it easier for viewers to hold their place. This also works well in print.

“Branding” of PowerPoint slides should be done judiciously.

Consistency is important Subtlety is important

All good design starts with a grid.

When applicable, lay out information with a clockwise flow.

Use a complete sentence as your “title slide. Images are easier to map than words. White space and simplicity trump clutter and dense content. Learn to navigate effortlessly.
