BUTTE HISTORY — Butte mining accidents number in the hundreds. The three worst mining disasters occurred between 1915 and 1917, resulting in the deaths of 206 miners.



— When the Titanic hit an iceberg on April 15, 1912, nine Butte people were aboard. Six men went down with the ship; the three women survived. — An early-day journalist described Butte as follows: “God had bent down the back of the great Rocky Mountains, right at this place, to mount the brightest and richest jewel in His grand workshop of precious things. — The Mining City’s first union was the Butte Workingman’s Union. It was formed in 1878.

 

— The Kenyon-Connell warehouse fire occurred Jan. 15, 1895, and killed 57 firemen.

   

— Father James Maginn, who was born in Butte Nov. 15, 1911, was executed by North Korea on July 4, 1950. The young priest was accused of being an American spy. — In August 1943, the U.S. Navy christened the former presidential yacht, Mayflower, the USS Butte. It served as a convoy escort vessel for the U.S. Coast Guard.
