eather has probably messed with the Montana Tech spring football schedule more this year than ever. Snow-covered and wet fields have kept outside practices few and far between for the Orediggers. Still, Tech coach Chuck Morrell said he has turned that into a positive. “The fact that we’ve had some extra meetings has actually been beneficial to us,” said Morrell, Tech’s 36year-old first-year head coach. Morrell, who came to town after years as the defensive coordinator at Sioux Falls and the University of South Dakota, is installing a 3-4 defense that is radically different than the scheme Tech ran the past 24 years under coach Bob Green. Offensive coordinator Ted Schlafke is also installing a brand-new offense. So, the Orediggers used the down time for meetings and walk-throughs in the gym. “We can go over (the new schemes) a number of times with the guys, then get on the field and roll through it,” Morrell said. “I think it’s been an advantage for us. When you’re installing something new, that’s half the battle.” Morrell has also used the time to show his new players films of some of the defenses that were part of a Sioux Falls team that went 56-1 from 2006-2009. “Our offense is going to be absolutely brand new. There’s no film on our offense,” Morrell said. “We’re going to be multiple — pro style, but multiple. We should be balanced. It should be pretty diverse.” Saturday, Oredigger fans will get a chance to see the new-look Orediggers. Well, kind of. Tech will hold a “parents’ day” during practice Saturday in conjunction with the annual Oredigger auction. Parents of players have been invited to attend practice. Montana Tech will hold a “parents’ day” during football practice Saturday in conjunction with the annual Oredigger auction. Parents of players have been invited to attend practice. So have members of head football coach Chuck Morrell’s first recruiting class. The practice, which will last about 2 hours, will begin at 1 p.m. at Alumni Coliseum — if the field is playable. Other options include the HPER Field and Leonard Field on campus and the old baseball fields behind the Butte Civic Center, where the team has spent most of its outside practices before Saturday. The day begins at 11:30 a.m. when coaches will introduce new signees to the media in the HPER dance room. After the practice, at 3:30 p.m., new coaches and staff will host a meet-and-greet with the public, also in the HPER. The silent auction, part of the fundraiser for Tech athletes aid, begins at 6 p.m. Live bidding begins at 7:30 p.m.

begin at 1 p.m. at Alumni Coliseum — if the field is playable. Other options include the HPER Field and Leonard Field on campus, and the old baseball fields behind the Butte Civic Center, where the team has spent most of its outside practices before Saturday. “We’ll do a fairly normal practice schedule, but we will have quite a bit of scrimmage time toward the last half of practice,” Morrell said. “Saturday will be the fifth time we’ve been on the field, so we need to do some practicing before we get into our scrimmage.” Despite the little time on an actual football field, Morrell said several players have already made an impression. The coach singled out Drew Waltee, Matt Study and Keith Mullan as leaders of the Tech offensive line. Drew Waltee is coming back as a fifth-year guy. At “D this point he’s done some tremendous leadership Matt Study’s had a good things for us,” Morrell said. “M

spring so far, and Keith Mullen has also done a great job for us. “We feel like we’ve got some key guys down there that we can build around.” The coach also said he’s excited about what he sees from running backs Pat Hansen and Justin Smith and receiver Cal McQueary. “He’s just been very impressive,” Morrell said of McQueary, a fifthyear senior from Butte. “You can’t possibly outwork the kid. He’s putting out an outstanding effort level. He’s also quick, he runs great routs and is aggressive. Craig Halko is another “C receiver who is having a great spring for us. We feel really good with our first set of receivers out there.” Another one of those top receivers is Trent Thomas, the Deer Lodge product who was all-conference as a returner last year. “I’ve compared him on film from last year to where he’s this spring,” Morrell said. “He’s really improved as a wide receiver.” James Roberts, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, is also working out at safety after turning heads with his athleticism at defensive end last year. “He just runs as well as anybody on our team,” Morrell said. “We feel there’s the opportunity for him to create mismatches for opposing defenses, plus he’s got experience playing wide receiver in high school. We just want to get him on the field.” Who will be throwing the ball to those receivers is still up in the air right now. Morrell said he is impressed with sophomores Brian Schwarzkoph and Nick Baker.

Five returning seniors — Connor O’Neill, Kevin Schey, Logan Ledgerwood, Daniel Chandler and Marcus Johnson — will likely start on defense. “Kevin Schey has got a tremendous amount of game experience, so I think we’ll definitely be able to lean on him, Morrell said of the senior linebacker. The coach said outside linebackers O’Neill and Joe Semansky are nice fits for his defense. “Both of those guys have the ability to pressure the quarterback for us, he said. “I think that’s a vital component that we’re looking for. Joe Hickey and Mike Touzinsky are inside linebackers Morrell said have some real potential. Johnson, the nose guard who had surgery after playing through an injury-filled 2010 campaign, is just getting back into the swing of things. He missed the entire winter conditioning program. “He’s just really working back into it, Morrell said. “He’ll be a tremendous asset for us there at the nose. He’s a very vocal guy. He’s always positive and pulling guys in the right direction. The rest of the defensive line is pretty young. Corey Eisenzimer, a junior from Dillon, moved to defensive end from offensive line. Mike Waldman, a sophomore from Butte, is also looking good at that position, Morrell said. Ledgerwood and Chandler are looking good at cornerback. Hard-hitting cornerback Jordan Heringer is still out from injuries sustained last season. “We’re looking forward to, at some point, getting

Luke Seubert has really had a very strong spring at the cornerback position. Dillon’s Jake McGinley looks to be a lock to start at one safety position. “JJake McGinley has really stepped up, Morrell said. “We’ve got a lot of guys working out at safety. One of those players is Nathan Kobold, who is making the move from linebacker to safety. Several players are switching positions this spring. Morrell said that’s because each player had a clean slate with the new coaching staff. “I tried not to watch too much film on them, Morrell said. “I wanted to let them go through our speed and weight training and do our evaluation. I wanted our staff to take a fresh look them. Morrell will continue evaluating his players through the spring game, which is set for April 30. The Orediggers will open camp in early August. Tech will play its first three games at home, starting Aug. 27 against Southern Oregon.

Three members of Bob Green’s 2010 coaching staff will be a part of the 2011 Orediggers. Doug Schleeman, Skippy Sims and Scott Sampson will coach along side first-year head coach Chuck Morrell. Schleeman’s return was announced shortly after Morrell was hired. The former Tech offensive coordinator will serve as the assistant head coach while working with receivers and tight ends. Schleeman, the team’s recruiting coordinator, also played a key role in landing Doug Schleeman, a solid 2011 recruiting coordinator recruiting class. “He’s really doing a good job organizing our recruiting, Morrell said. Sampson will be coaching the offensive line for the 12th season. During that time he coached two AllAmericans and 13 Allconference players. “He’s got a great relationship with the guys from coaching them a long time, Morrell said. Sims, who is coaching Scott Sampson, the outside linebackers, is offensive line coach entering his second season

Morrell said he was impressed with Sims’ move from player to coach. “That’s always a tough transition to go through when you coach at the place you play. I went through the same thing, B.J. Campbell, Skippy Sims, Morrell said. “You’ve got special outside linebackers to create a level of coordinator coach respect and some separation there, and he’s done a good job of that. “It goes back to his reputation as a player. Ted Schlafke was brought in to be the offensive coordinator, while B.J. Campbell is the special teams coordinator. Morrell is the defensive coordinator. He said Campbell, who will coach linebackers, is his “right-hand man. Campbell is also in charge of strength and conditioning. The players have already gotten to know him very well. “He came in and did an outstanding job, Morrell Ted Schlafke, said of Campbell, who earned a masters degree in offensive exercise science and athletic administration from the coordinator University of South Dakota. “We’re high intensity. We’re not in there for a long time. He did a great job. Guys really responded well. Former University of Montana defensive lineman Lance Spencer is now a student at Tech. He’ll coach the defensive line. “He’s got a lot of great playing experience, and he’s got some great ideas that he’s bringing to the table, Morrell said.

Orediggers will have dry season New rules on drinking during the season BY BILL FOLEY of The Montana Standard

Coach Chuck Morrell has made several changes to the Oredigger program since being named head football coach at Montana Tech. One change will affect the night after the games. Drinking alcohol or going out to bars will not be allowed during the football season. “If we’re going to be able to move the program to where we want to have it, team-wise we’ve got to be focused on what we’ve got to do to win,” Morrell said. “To me, (drinking) doesn’t have a lot to do with winning.” In recent years, players were allowed to drink alcohol or go out to bars only on nights after a game. Morrell said several factors led to his decision to keep the team dry during the season. “When game day rolls around, we want to be at our absolute peak. There’s a lot of science that goes along with all this stuff,” Morrell said. “For the guys who are focused on what we want to do, I don’t think it will be a big deal because they’ve put so much time into what we’re doing and what they’re putting

into their bodies. They’re physically preparing every week.” The new coach also said the policy is in the best interest of his players. “If you watch ESPN, there’s something that pops up every single day,” Morrell said, pointing to problems related to alcohol and partying. “Literally every single day somebody is getting suspended or kicked off the team or something like that. “Obviously part of the college aspect is having fun,” Morrell added. “I understand that completely. But also, what is our ultimate goal here? Are you focused to be part of our ultimate goal?”

Redefining The Art of Toss & Catch

Coach Chuck Morrell On Dec. 20, 2010, Chuck Morrell was officially named the new head football coach at Montana Tech. Morrell comes to Tech from the University of South Dakota, where he served as the defensive coordinator in 2009. Prior to his stint at USD, Morrell coached at the University of Sioux Falls from 1998-2009, where he served as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. During his time at Sioux Falls, the Cougars played in five NAIA national championship games, winning three titles (2006, 2008, 2009). From 2006-2009, the Cougars were the most dominant program in the NAIA, with a record of 56-1 — their only loss in that span was in the 2007 national title game. Morrell had the number one overall defense in the NAIA in 2006, 2008 and 2009. His 2008 squad posted 7 shutouts and allowed 144 total yards rushing over the entire season. Morrell has coached in 31 NAIA playoff games. As a player at Sioux Falls, he was the leading tackler on the 1996 NAIA Division II national championship team. Coach Morrell posted 44 All-Conference and 11 All-American defensive players while at Sioux Falls. Morrell is a native of Tyndall, S.D., and is married to Jen. They have two daughters, Selene and Aleia.

aron Woliczko was named Head Men’s Basketball Coach of the Montana Tech Orediggers on May 12, 2010. Aaron spent the eight seasons before that on the basketball staff at the University of the Pacific (an NCAA Division I institution) in Stockton, Calif. Aaron was also a 1997 graduate of Pacific and played on two of the Tigers’ most successful teams in school history. As a player and coach, he was a part of 227 total wins, 6 Big West Conference Championships, 7 post-season appearances (including 4 in the NCAA “Big Dance), and 7 post season victories.

THE COACH Aaron started his coaching career at Santa Cruz High School with legendary Coach Pete Newell Jr. A 1993 graduate of the high school himself, Aaron helped guide the Cardinals to a 26-6 record in the 1999-00 season. Following a two-year stint working at Pacific as the facilities and events assistant in the athletics department, Aaron began working as the coordinator of men’s basketball operations in 2002, and eventually moved into the role of a full time assistant in 2005. While on staff in 2003-04, Aaron helped the Tigers to the NCAA tournament following a Big West Conference regular season and tournament

championship. Pacific beat Providence in the first round of “March Madness before falling to Kansas and finishing the season with a 25-8 record. The 2004-05 season is without a doubt, the best season in Pacific history as the Tigers finished with a school record 27 wins, went 18-0 in the Big West Conference regular season and were ranked as high as 16th in the country (AP Top 25 poll). Along the way, Aaron saw Pacific rattle off 22 wins in a row and advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament after beating a tough Pittsburgh team, 75-71. University of the Pacific once again “danced in the NCAAs at the end of the 2005-06 season which also marked the third consecutive Big West Conference Championship for Aaron and the Tigers. In 2007-08 Pacific had another 20+ win season as they finished with a 21-10 clip. The 2008-09 season manifested in another post season appearance as the Tigers went 21-13 advancing to the Final Four of the CIT post season tourney. Aaron’s final season at Pacific saw him add yet another Big West Conference Championship ring to his trophy case, as they went 23-12. During the 2009-10
