Faith CITY-WIDE CELEBRATION Christmas schedules and services listed
W
Blaine Community Center, 975 N. Main St. The Rev. Brian Miller
The following is a list of some of the church celebrations and services going on over the next week— ANTICIPATING CHRISTMAS EVE “For the Anglican church, we’ve abstained from accompanied by some pastoral insight on what it Christmas music for the past four weeks in preparation means to celebrate Christmas and the Promise of the for this one night.” the Rev. Brian Miller New Year within their own congregations. said. “Advent is a time of preparation, so while the rest of life is Christmasoriented, we’re waiting — much like they did for the Messiah’s birth.” Miller described the focus of his congregation during the weeks preceding Christmas. “They contemplate the coming of the savior—and that has come with Miller three variables: the first coming of Christ in the manger, as well as the coming of Christ into our hearts in the present, and the coming of Christ in the future,” he said. The period of waiting culminates in a celebration on Christmas Eve. Miller said the church holds a four o’clock service so families with young children can attend, and hosts a later service at 10:30 p.m., which extends to midnight so the celebration is carried forth into the first minutes of Christmas day.

Lanny Rounds BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP The First Presbyterian Church has traditionally extended its holiday celebration with faith, fellowship and a New Year’s Eve party. “We’ve done it for about 11 years, and for us it offers a family friendly environment where we invite people to bring along holiday cookies and board Rounds games and they gather in the fellowship hall,” the Rev. Lanny Rounds said. Every year the experience is different, and Rounds said they have seen everything from Pinochle tournaments to lively board games. Families spend the evening together, and movies and interactive video games are available for the kids. At 11:15 p.m. everyone gathers in the church sanctuary to reflect on the past and coming year. Continued from Page A4 Through Christmas plays and presentations, the kids get to get up and actually take part in the whole Christmas experience “It’s easy for kids to relate and identify with the Christmas story, Barnhart said, adding that it’s important for the church to let the kids know that Christmas is more than commercialization. “I think it’s because kids have that natural tendency to want to be involved and be active. The kids get excited about it. They love to be a part of it and act it out and get dressed up, he said. NYC window displays give reason to rejoice BY ADAM PEMBLE of The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — At a time when so many people are out of work, New York City’s holiday window display designers are safely employed — and happy to give a gloomy public a respite. Design work on the elaborate creations at the city’s biggest department stores often begins a year in advance and pays off in oohs and ahhs. “At a time when the economy is hurting so much, you need to have some joy, said Patti Solomon, who recently flew in from Atlanta for some holiday sightseeing. “You can look at those windows and remember childhood memories, she said as she stood in front of Saks Fifth Avenue’s windows, which show a fashion-conscious girl’s journey in stunning, one-of-akind dresses in vignettes. Many of the city’s shop fronts sparkle this time of year, but Saks, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s draw the largest crowds. The creations range from highly stylized installation art pieces to more idealized vignettes of days gone by. But they grace the windows for only four to six weeks. Animatronics provide an abridged visual version of “Miracle on 34th Street at Macy’s, the department store whose Santa Claus was the basis for the classic film. As people pass by on Seventh Avenue, scenes from the movie are revealed through sets that collapse or slide. They are made of laser- and hand-cut paper in more than 100 colors combined with mechanically controlled, animated figures. The project required 7,084 hours of work from 14 paper artisans. Designer Paul Olszewski worked with an animation company to give his windows a
“more cinematic and theatrical feel. “I always push technology, but I also wanted to combine an artistry with it, too, Olszewski said. Macy’s window displays are assembled off site and then installed as finished pieces by forklift, he said. But Saks, whose window design team is led by Julio Gomez, assembles its displays on site, piece by piece. Working in a confined window space can be challenging, especially when the materials include tree branches, wood paneling, linoleum, garland and paper. “My background is very much hands-on sculptural, welding, carpentry, painting and all of those things have pretty much come in handy doing this, Gomez said. Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s spokespeople declined to comment on the cost of their holiday displays; a call to Saks was not returned. The artistry that window designers put into their displays is dedicated to all the people who walk by every day, Gomez said. “It’s a very unselfish thing that we are doing here, he said. Bloomingdale’s decided to go all out this year and produce holiday windows using more than 100 LCD screens created by a team of computer graphic artists, lead designer Jack Hruska said. It shows a stylized winter scene in which a bird decorates trees magically as it flies past. At the Macy’s “Miracle on 34th Street display, the awe of those creations was evident in the eyes of a little girl. When her parents asked the central question of the movie — “Do you believe? — she replied, “Yes, her eyes fixed on the windows.
CROWDS ADMIRE the holiday window displays at Macy’s flagship store in New York City, N.Y. The window displays are assembled off site and then installed as finished pieces by forklift. Many of New York’s shop fronts sparkle this time of year, but Saks, Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s draw the largest crowds. AP PHOTO / MARY ALTAFFER
