‘Jacob’s Pillow’ in Butte again for Shillelagh Shindig Helena band “Jacob’s Pillow” will play for the second year in a row at the 38th annual Shillelagh Shindig on Wednesday, March 16, from 8 p.m. to midnight at the McQueen Club on Continental at Hecla. The Edmonton Pipers also will play at the party, which is sponsored by Butte-Silver Bow Democrats and open to all with free admission. Other Shindig entertainment will be by the Copper Cloggers and Irish soloist Judy Powers. The Shindig also features free snacks, 50-50 and a raffle. For information, call Barbara Jeniker, 310-0638 The band’s name comes from the Irish folk tale about the Blarney Stone. Some say it was Jacob’s pillow, brought to Ireland by the prophet Jeremiah. The group has also been billed by several other names over the years including “The Never
Land Ranch Hands,” “The Dimpled Chads,” “The Earth Tones,” “The Swinging Pulaskis,” “Whistler’s In-Laws” and others. It is an ongoing gag for the band to change its name to complement the theme of the particular gig it is playing. The band plays several styles of music including all kinds of rock as well as some folk and Irish tunes. “Jacob’s Pillow” has been around in some form or another for about 11 years. The three original members are Ed Tinsley of Helena, guitar and vocals; Bill Lombardi, Helena, lead guitar, and Butte native Mark Piskolich, guitar, mandolin, harmonicas and vocals. Recently the band expanded and added Mary Tuckerman of Helena on vocals and piano, Trebor Riddle of Helena on bass and various other instruments and vocals, and Cody Davis of Helena on drums.
Friendly Sons, Daughters banquet set for March 16 The Friendly Sons and Daughters of St. Patrick will have their annual banquet Wednesday, March 16, at the Front Street Station on Front Street in Butte. owner of Driscoll Pharmacy in Butte, is the featured speaker. Pat O’Connor will be master of ceremonies. Three scholarships will be awarded, along with memorial presentations, including one for Bubba Maloney, who died in 2010. Maloney was president of the Friendly Sons and Daughters, and remains so at this time, McDonough said.
Irish family entertainment set March 17 at Civic Center The 15th annual “Handing Down the Heritage” celebration — featuring the Tiernan Irish Dancers and Dublin Gulch — starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, in the Butte Civic Center. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for high school students. Small children are admitted at no charge. Advance tickets are available from any Tiernan Irish dancer, Cavanaugh’s County Celtic in Uptown Butte or at the Butte Civic Center box office. Tickets will also be available at the door. The 100-plus Tiernan Irish Dancers range in age from 3 to 18. From little Irish fairies to young men and women who have earned their special Tiernan school outfits and solo attire, this show is the culmination of their dancing year. They will perform traditional Irish dances, jigs and reels with Butte’s Irish band, “Dublin Gulch. “This is a familyoriented event for St. Patrick’s Day. We encourage families to come and enjoy an evening of Irish Dance, stories, and songs,’’ a spokeswoman said. The Butte Civic Center will have plenty of concessions during the evening and doors will open at 5 p.m. Proceeds help keep Irish dance and music traditions going in Butte. For details, call Cindy or Tom Powers at 494-1203 or 490-1188.

SHANNA MARJAMAA SELFORS, left, and Tommi Haikka stand outside the Helsinki on St. Urho’s Day 2009 after being crowned Queen Urho and St. Urho.
St. Urho crowning March 16 The traditional crowning of St. Urho starts at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at the Helsinki bar, 402 E. Broadway. This year Charlie Davies will be crowned, a spokesman said. The Great Scots bagpipers will play at 4:30 p.m., followed by Andy Larson. Legend has it that St. Urho chased all the
grasshoppers out of Finland with a pitchfork to save the grape crop. But some organizers say the tale is baloney. Regardless, locals have celebrated the event for nearly 40 years by crowning a Finnish descendant as the new St. Urho and getting a head start on their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Butte.
