In Memoriam:

Musings from the chair p . 1

Hal Jasper, 1930‐2012

Recogni ons p . 2 ‐ 3

With great sadness we announce the passing of colleague and friend, Hal Jasper. Professor Jasper taught accoun ng at Miami for dec‐ ades and served on a number of important Miami University com‐ mi ees. He took great pride in his students and par cularly en‐ joyed hearing about their suc‐ cess on becoming CPAs. Profes‐ sor Jasper was also a great fan of Miami athle cs and was ac ve in the Oxford community. Professor Jasper was truly a Miami legend who made this a great university. He will be missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing him. We encourage alumni to share their memories of Professor Jasper by sending an e‐mail to Gretchen Radler at radlergb@MiamiOH.edu. We will include these remembrances in a special feature in our 2012‐2013 annual report.

Personnel changes p . 4

Musings from the Chair I hope this newsle er finds all of our alumni and friends doing well and enjoying life. Miami, like many universi es, is facing challenges as higher educa on is going through a significant evolu on. But that being said, we are hopefully going from strength to strength and much of our success is due to the commitment of our alumni and friends. Both the university and the Farmer School of Business have seen a record number of applica‐ ons this year and the quality of the applicant pool is very strong. We are op mis c that this will translate into a very capable first‐year class this coming fall. Our students con nue to place well in internships and full‐ me employment. Many of you are directly responsible for that success and we thank you very much for your hard work on behalf of our graduates. The Department of Accountancy has had a very busy year so far. We welcomed two new facul‐ ty members and one new staff member (see back page) and will say goodbye to two. We are very proud of our faculty and con nue to a ract excellent teacher‐scholars. Beginning in the fall two new faculty members (and Miami alumni) will be joining us: Bill Moser in tax and Eric Marinich in managerial. Three of our excellent senior faculty are com‐ ple ng their final teaching responsibili es this year: Barry Arlinghaus, Jim Cashell, and Clay Hock. They will be missed, and we cannot thank them enough for their tremendous con‐ tribu ons over their careers at Miami.

On a sad note, as you can read on the sidebar, Hal Jasper, a true Miami legend, recently passed away. For decades Hal brought his en‐ ergy and enthusiasm to the classroom and those of us who were lucky enough to be in his classes know if there ever was a Mr. Miami, it was Hal. I have been fortunate to visit many of our alumni in Ohio, Chicago, and New York. It is always gra fying to see the success of our graduates and their commitment and willing‐ ness to stay connected to Miami. We hope to visit other ci es in the future. If you are inter‐ ested in helping host a visit, please contact me. We are also planning to have an on‐ campus accountancy alumni event in the fall, possibly at Homecoming. We will send out more details later. In our quest for con nual improvement, let us know how we are doing and how we can pro‐ vide an even be er educa onal experience for our students. Thank you for all of your support and we hope to see you on campus soon. Warmest regards, Marc
