From 1989 Canella strengthened its worldwide presence with the completion of ambitious comprehensive installation projects in hotels, mansions, palaces, government buildings, lofts or luxury yachts, among many others.

furniture as an object of use and enjoyment. He has worked and works with prestigious brands that are renowned nationwide. He is the creator of Audere, the collection that marks Canella’s shift toward a more contemporary universe and with which the company began to collaborate with prestigious designers.

How did you conceive of the “contemporary habitat”? -By adjusting to the aesthetic and cultural tastes of the user, as well as their clothing or cars, the home environment is a representation of social status.

Is design linked to functionality, comfort, or other values? -Design is everything, and therefore encompasses any parameter required to make a product function.

What are the main challenges of adapting classic furniture for new generations? -Adapting to the tastes of the customers. Today we must exchange the concept of “classic” for “sophisticatedly contemporary”.

What is design for you? -That which makes life more beautiful, functional or comfortable. If you had to tell us your idols in design. Who would they be? -Starck, is the biggest

What are the prevailing values for you when designing a piece of furniture? -Finding an aesthetic and functional level that the user doesn’t yet know that they want and need.

What does Canella inspire in you? -Quality, craftsmanship, added values, quality, quality...

What takes precedence when you design a piece of furniture, trends or creative talent? -You can’t have one without the other, trends can and should be analyzed but without talent... What is the creative process you follow to make your creations? -I always do the same thing, I ask myself the big question, “why does everyone do it this way and why can’t there be another way”.

Is it possible to reinvent classic furniture? -Canella has done it!!!

Does another example like Bauhaus exist in the world today? -I don’t think so, there aren’t groups of groundbreaking thinkers, there are lone guerrillas.

Does the current economic crisis affect the development of furniture design? -Of course, the crisis is something real that affects us at all levels, economically and emotionally.

What is the most representative furniture fair for you? -Milan

What does it mean for a designer of modern trends to design classically? -Challenges, but challenges are what really excite me.

Straight lines or curved lines? -Well-made lines.

Is Canella reinventing the classics? -Will the sun rise tomorrow?

How does globalization influence furniture design? -The information on trends flows faster which means that newly-coined concepts extend transversely, but each market has its nuances, still.

What is Canella’s furniture design trend? -In regards to my collection it is focused on this sector of the public that wants quality and warmth of shapes, people who are sophisticatedly modern.

Javier Mariscal Javier Mariscal is one of the latest designers to collaborate with Canella Furniture. This “image

creator”, as he defines himself, works in various formats and disciplines: comics, illustration, graphic design, textiles, painting, sculpture, multimedia, animation or interior design. For this reason, the company chose him for a big challenge: to reinvent its sofa catalog with an iconic piece. We asked him about his experience fusing classic furniture with contemporary design.

What encouraged you to work with Canella, a furniture manufacturer with such a classic personality? JM. Well, it’s a challenge. It’s a company that manufactures very well, they are serious and their question was “Would you dare to create a twist on three very classic chairs?” So, I don’t know, it’s a fun exercise. What inspired you to make this Chester? It’s not just inspiration. It’s simply looking at a problem and solving it. And in this case I solved it by introducing colors that are never used on a Chester knowing that there was a leather catalog with some wonderful colors. And also by introducing them in a rather rational way. Not short, but they are the same diamonds that make you stand out. Then one corner is bluer, the other is more strawberry... The diamonds have been enlarged but we haven’t touched the sofa’s measurements because

they seemed very good to me. Of course, on the sides and the back is a change: everything is very smooth and there are bands of colors. From behind it is very lovely. What role does design play in contemporary society? Our life is surrounded by design. Your glasses, your underwear, the iPad, this table... everything is designed. And how it depends on technology – this stool, fifteen years ago, wouldn’t have been able to be manufactured – it improves our lives and makes our society work much better. Then there’s also graphic design, which is fundamental. It has existed since human language was created. It is one of the pillars that made the cognitive revolution of mankind possible, being able to understand society and pass that knowledge from one generation to another. So, thanks to graphic design, our world is more organized. Any information can be passed through the graphic process and you’ll understand it better. What do you think about the new generations of designers? Well, you always hope that the new generations will be wilder, that they’ll break the rules more, that they’ll try to investigate or find other ways. That they’ll propose another syntax and another way to conjugate. But for a while now, the new generations are too traditional, in their way, but traditional: they look for very cheap things, very simple things that don’t surprise you or contribute anything. It seems really boring and a bit sad to me. What takes precedence when you design a piece of furniture, trends or creative talent? Creative talent, without doubt. What does Canella inspire in you? Childhood, it reminds me of my childhood. Doing things oneself, following the processes and steps that were made years ago, as before, with tranquility, giving priority to quality, craftsmanship, details. What should be the trend in Canella’s furniture design? Reinvention, but without losing its essence.

How do you understand the current environment? As a designer, the current environment has many facets, styles, ways of creating similar design. There is no exact definition of the current environment, although there are some assumptions when decorating, such as durability, quality, style, beauty, personal taste, etc. Personally my view of today’s décor is a mixture of styles that define the customer’s personality. What are the main challenges of adapting classic furniture for new generations? The big challenge is the reinterpretation of pure, classic styles to make them appealing and economically possible for a completely different public, which is much wealthier than that of a few decades ago. What are the prevailing values for you when designing a piece of furniture? Beauty is one of the main values, otherwise the customer will never buy it. But this should not be at odds with practicality and functionality. Moreover, I always try to ensure that my designs work well with the manufacturer’s production processes, an aspect that we designers sometimes forget that can cause many headaches. What takes precedence when you design a piece of furniture, trends or creative talent? A mixture of the two. Trends inspire you as to where the market can go: shapes, colors, materials, finishes, etc... And talent is what allows you to design an appealing piece, at the same time imparting the personality of the creator or the manufacturer. What is the creative process you follow to make your creations? First and foremost is to be familiar with the company that has requested the creation: their characteristics, how they build furniture, production processes, etc... And then I research the brand’s target audience: their design style, economic level or other aspects that can help you hit the target. The customers, after all, are the ones who decide if the design is commercial and to their taste. So the more we know about their tastes the better. What is design for you? For me it’s a way of life that gives me a wealth of sensations. When I’m involved in a project I live in an emotional state between happiness and worry. Happiness during the entire creative and production process, and worry until the project hits the market and you know if the design is well-received or not. If you had to tell us your idols in design, who would they be? It’s difficult for me to choose specific references. But if I had to name some designers they would be Marcel Wanders,

Mies Van de Roe, Konstantin Gric, Charles & Ray Eames and a long etc What does canella furniture inspire in you? Courage. I think that a classic furniture company constantly seeking reinvention, as in the case of the Klass collection, is very courageous. We hope to find new markets and customers with tastes that are different from the typical classic or modern and avant-garde furniture. Is it possible to reinvent classic furniture? It isn’t a question of can or can’t. It must be done! We must be capable of creating a new trend in classic décor. What is the most representative furniture fair for you? I think the Milan Furniture Fair. The Italians are the model in everything that has to do with design, and their furniture fair is proof of it. Only they are capable of influencing when a type of wood is trendy or the new lines or new materials that we use in design etc. And Milan is where all of these novel ideas are presented. Straight lines or curved lines? For me the tendency is a mixture of the two as minimalism is becoming history, and now we can see a multitude of organic shapes applied to the designs of modern furniture. Does another example like bauhaus exist in the world today? The truth is that it is difficult to find a model like BAUHAUS. They laid the foundations for contemporary industrial and graphic design, all in 1919. Every day we see their pieces in any style magazine as if they were new. And that is simply astonishing. Does the current economic crisis affect the development of furniture design? Of course the crisis and our way of life have completely changed the habit of furnishing the home. Today people spend €600 on a smartphone and then they spend the same amount or less on the dining room in their house. Before people preferred to have pieces of furniture with more representation and quality in their home, but the sector hasn’t known how to give them, for example, the value that electronics have for the public in general. Will this be until Apple decides to make furniture? On the other hand, there is an audience with a very high purchasing power, that continues to demand upscale furniture, for whom the values of luxury, quality or distinction continue to be important. That is the world of Canella.

Today we sat down with Jose Vicente Puchades, a designer who represents the school of designers born in the cradle of Valencian furniture in the 20th century. With a long career as a designer of classic furniture, he has collaborated with Canella Furniture on various occasions. In 2015 he tackled a new challenge, the Klass collection. than 10 highly qualified experts trained to create floor plans and perspectives for large and small installations, and most importantly: to adapt to the needs and wishes of each customer.

The heart of this department is Ángela, who is responsible for directing and coordinating each one of the projects carried out by the brand.

From dollhouses to high-end décor

It is the most treasured department. We could say that there’s magic in Canella’s technical department. 4 lines reach us there, which are the architectural space, and we convert them into 400,000. We transform them into a fantastic installation. It can be your house, your hotel or your palace, and will always be yours, because the customer never fails to be present in our work. With each new project we begin a new adventure, a new challenge. In order to make the dreams of each customer a reality it is very important to know their tastes and needs. The rest is done by us working tirelessly to achieve every last detail, however complex it may be. Each corner of the project has to be beautiful, lovely, unique, and so we use all of our time, effort and expertise. This is the reason why many architects and decorators choose Canella.

Since I was a girl I always liked handicrafts, order and design. I think that these facets have helped to shape both my personality and my profession. I started with dollhouses, creating authentic complexes with swimming pools, parking and shopping areas and making dressing rooms, boudoirs and game rooms in the interior of the houses. Then I was interested by the design magazines I could get. Later, I studied Technical Engineering in Industrial Design, where I began to combine my taste for handicrafts, order and design with the production processes of different industries: metal, plastic, ceramic, wood, etc., where objects are born.

I started in the year 2005 and promptly realized that everything here was different than what I had seen before: a large company, with the factory next door, where you could touch and see how everything was done, and with a large technical office where, more than the design of products, what most caught my attention was the possibility of creating designs for comprehensive installations. Soon I picked up the pace of the projects and I fell in love with each one of them, assuming greater responsibilities and contributing my technical knowledge, such as the challenge of developing interior doors, which until then we didn’t make ourselves.

Yes, definitely. But we accept it with pleasure. We have a team of highly skilled people, from the technical department to manufacturing. Some with many years of experience and others who bring a fresh and rejuvenating air to the company. A perfect combination of talent, skills and dispositions which, coupled with the knowledge and experience acquired over all these years, allows us to do a job well done and accomplish what is required by the customer both technically and aesthetically.

200 visits, which represents an increase of 30% over the previous year. A significant increase due in large part to the recent projects carried out in Gabon, as shown by the considerable number of visitors from African and Arab countries. It was also visited by professionals from Eastern Europe, Latin America and the European Union. The new Chester sofa by Javier Mariscal, the recently debuted Luxor Vohen series or the Klass collection have pleasantly surprised people due to their contemporary and groundbreaking style. The dressing room presented in the Alemán collection has also received a great reception, highly valued by the public for its spectacular design.

Canella Installation for the Constitutional Court of Gabon

ast December 30th marked the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Constitutional Court of Gabon, one of the most emblematic buildings of the African country, an installation project which was done by Canella Furniture. The President of Gabon, Ali Bongo, presided over the event along with the mayor of Libreville and the president of the Constitutional Court. During the event, guests toured this impressive 8-floor, 6,000 m2 building, which features a door over 5 meters tall made from Iroko wood. Paneling and furniture from the Alemán series were also chosen for the over 1.000 m2 hall, with olive root combined with elegant and unique tapestries. This has been one of the most important projects undertaken by the Valencian company in recent years, due to the dimensions and importance of the assignment, as well as the time taken to complete it.

“E

verything, even the good classics, can be reinterpreted”. With this phrase, Javier Mariscal defines the essence of the new sofa that he has designed for Canella Furniture. Taking inspiration from the Valencian company’s own catalog, Mariscal has dared to give the classic Chester sofa a wide and attractive range of colors, which interact through diamonds and genuine irregular shapes. To do this, measurements and the traditional processes of sewing and quilting have been respected, adapting them to the designer’s creativity to achieve a groundbreaking piece that merges classic furniture and the most contemporary design. Based on this first design, the sofa can be chosen in a combination of more classic colors, as well as in different sizes of one, two and three seats.

lejandro Merino Guerrero, student at the Professional School of Architecture at Señor de Sipán University (Peru), has won first prize in the International Classic Furniture Design Competition, organized by Canella Furniture. Merino designed a piece with aesthetic, ergonomic and industrially feasible features. It is a polymorphic chair which makes the most of each one of its sides and that, by altering its position, creates various divisions according to the need of the users. The young university student has been deeply grateful to Canella for their recognition of his work. Not surprisingly, in addition to the notoriety he has received due to the award, both parties are now studying the possibility of producing his polymorphic chair.

In this iconic space, Canella Furniture wanted to bring the piece closer to the press, clients, distributors and final customers through a space designed by Valencian designer José María Ferrero. The Chester by Mariscal was the protagonist along with some pieces from the Klass and Vohen collections, and attendees could try one of 3 seats next to Javier Mariscal himself. The event was attended by some of the most important media of the international scene, such as Diario Design, Infurma, Conde Nast, Elle Decor, Nuevo Estilo, Mi Casa, Hello Valencia, Valencia Plaza, Revista Rusa or Le Classique and Home Interior of Ukraine among others, who were able to interview the designer while they tried out his Chester.

Some of them are a good example of the tenacity and value shown by Canella’s workforce when faced with any challenge, however complex it may be. One of the most famous examples occurred in June of 2006, when a delivery was scheduled for the Supreme Court in Moscow. They

called Canella from Moscow on Friday the 16th of that month, fifteen days before the agreed date, to know if the delivery could be made immediately, since the Supreme Court had to be unveiled in 48 hours in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Obviously, there wasn’t sufficient time to transport the cargo by road and install it. Nevertheless, Canella’s team reacted immediately, drawing up an alternative plan

In Bangladesh Canella completed a formidable comprehensive project in a colonial style private residence. During

the study phase, they analyzed how to facilitate the entry of natural light in each room and at different times of day, so that it would be the protagonist in the home. For a suitable combination of furniture and panels with ceilings and floors, they opted for the Alemán collection, using hardwoods, lacquered with gold leaf carvings and marquetry details. The western orientation of the main hall and the large windows favor the entry of light, enhance the nuances of the wood and provide elegance and naturalness. The center of the room features a thousand liter fish tank that is well-integrated and paneled to match the rest of the furniture. In addition, they created four 80 m2 dressing rooms with double height paneling and forging that combine order and design with a lot of style. The kitchen, made from olive wood that matches the marbles of the central bench, was adapted to the owner’s needs, and culminated with the full integration of appliances in the paneling and the presence of some large windows that enhance the feeling of spaciousness and brightness. For the children’s rooms, they created personalized décors based on the ages of the children, also distinguishing by gender. All of this resulted in a dream residence where light and exclusivity are the true protagonists.

Located in one of the most beautiful areas of New Jersey, this contemporary English style

mansion consists of a large central body and two turrets with ledges on the sides and lovely slate roofs that offer a great visual impact. It was decided to create an elegant décor based on the Alemán collection with olive wood finishes, integrating pieces adapted to the various atmospheres of each one of the rooms (hall, lounges, library, game room and bedrooms) and using paneling and marquetry to cover the walls. Some rooms were completed with honey-colored coffered ceilings, matching the wood paneling, to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. In addition, a spectacular spiral staircase in olive wood located in the center of the hall and a library with paneling up to 7 meters in height, whose measurements were calculated based on the volumes that had to be accommodated, primarily incunabula. From the library, through sliding doors specially made due to their enormous dimensions, you access an office decorated with pieces from the Alemán collection. The main hall is covered in paneling with a honeycolored finish and elegant fabrics in shades to match the rest of the furniture. The central body of the hall is completed with the covering of a large fireplace. Finally, the game room features the presence of a large pool table and a bar. This project tested the technical capacity of Canella’s team, who achieved the wonderful result seen in the images.
