Volleyball Facilities memorial hall
On Saturday, February 6, 1954, the dream of each Muhlenberg alumnus was realized when Memorial Hall, the new physical education building, was dedicated in a brief program. In the 61 years since, Memorial Hall has been the site of numerous basketball games, wrestling meets, concerts, speakers and, of course, volleyball matches. In 2008, Democratic campaigners Bill Clinton and Barack Obama paid Memorial Hall a visit.
Although it is 61 years old, Memorial Hall remains a thoroughly modern facility. Recent improvements have included the addition of an overhead scoreboard, repainting of the floor, a new lighting system installed in 2010 and a repainting of the walls and bleachers in 2011. The Mule volleyball team has enjoyed playing at home, compiling a 158-95 (.625) record in Memorial Hall since 1991.

foot addition to the Life Sports Center opened in August 2004, further improving Muhlenberg College’s athletic facilities. The addition, built directly west of the John Deitrich Field House, includes a large weight facility, an expanded cardio-fitness area, a snack bar, new facilities for health service and counseling, training rooms, locker rooms and coaches’ offices. The structure overlooks Scotty Wood Stadium and Varsity Field and is joined to the Life Sports Center by a large indoor corridor on the main level. A new main entrance faces the campus. The project also entailed renovations in the Field House, including installation of a new floor and track, new netting, new lighting and painting. The Field House floor and track were resurfaced in the summer of 2014.

The BUTTERMAKERS The 1990 Muhlenberg volleyball team was a very young but promising group. Comprised mostly of freshmen, the team worked extremely hard but met with lots of frustration and disappointment during the early part of the season. In an effort to keep their morale up, and to point out the necessity of continuing to work hard and thus ultimately achieve success, Coach Frank Marino told them the following story:
There was once a group of frogs who happened upon a large vat of milk. Seeing an opportunity for fun, they jumped into the vat and began to frolic. Unfortunately, the edge of the vat was shaped in a curved way that allowed for easy entry but impossible exit. The frogs swam frantically about and tried hard to escape from the vat. Eventually all but one frog grew exhausted, sank to the bottom and perished. The remaining frog continued to kick and kick until the milk solidified and was turned to butter. The frog was therefore able to climb out of the vat and survive. The obvious moral of the story is if you keep kicking and trying, you will eventually succeed. That group of freshmen went on to set the College record for wins. Further, of the seven who were freshmen at that time, five made Deans’ List every semester and three were Phi Beta Kappa. The group came to be known as the “Buttermakers” and established traditions of excellence and pride which succeeding teams strive to maintain. The program holds a tournament every year named in their honor.

Off the Court good students The Mules earned the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2014, marking the sixth time in the last eight years they received the honor. The award recognizes collegiate and high school volleyball teams that have maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average (out of 4.0) during the school year. Muhlenberg volleyball players also regularly appear on the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll. To be named to the Academic Honor Roll, a student must be a sophomore or higher in class standing and carry at least a 3.40 cumulative grade-point average.
good citizens The members of the Muhlenberg volleyball team are appreciative of their status as collegiate players and make every effort to give back to the community that supports them. • Muhlenberg and the other 10 Centennial Conference teams have combined to raise more than $60,000 in eight years of the “Digging for a Cure” campaign. Since 2011, the CC schools donated their proceeds to Tanner’s Touch, a Carroll County, Md., organization developed to raise money for pediatric cancer research and families of children with cancer. In previous years, the money was donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, an organization dedicated to empowering all women affected by breast cancer to live as long as possible with the best quality of life. • The last two years, the team offered several clinics with both Athletes for Christ and St. Anne’s Volleyball program. • Last season the Mules hosted a Zumba-thon that benefitted the Autism Society Lehigh Valley. • The team recently spent a day of its Fall Break reading to a third-grade class at Sacred Heart Regional High School. The Mules shared with the youngsters their favorite books about Halloween and answered questions about being college athletes. • The team has participated in Muhlenberg’s celebration of National Girls and Women in Sport Day. Several dozen elementary- and middleschool girls from Allentown come to campus and are taught the basics in a variety of sports. Afterwards, the Mule athletes talk to their guests about making healthy choices in their daily lives.

We are not only a group of individuals who work together in playing the game, but companions on and off the court who, regardless of wins or losses, will always be there for the other. We really are a family - a family that also extends beyond the immediate team. “When I decided to come to Muhlenberg College and play collegiate volleyball, studying abroad was not on my list of priorities. As the time to decide got closer, I realized I could still balance playing a varsity sport and spending a semester overseas. The Office of Global Education has so many opportunities and options of study abroad programs in different countries worldwide. Playing at the Division III level gave me the opportunity to play volleyball, and explore a little more of the world outside of Allentown. I enrolled to study abroad in Barcelona, Spain, for my Spring 2015 semester. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made, and definitely the experience of a lifetime. Studying abroad allowed me to be independent, more responsible, and communicate better with others.

“Leadership is one of the most important factors of a team. We are the role models, friends, and sometimes even the ones that lay down the law. I am very excited to have a six-senior leadership because I think everyone brings something different and extremely valuable to the table. We all have different strengths and will be able to utilize them to create long-term success this year.”

“As student-athletes at Muhlenberg College, we have the privilege to be just that: a student first and an athlete second. However, we are lucky that it does not have to stop there. Muhlenberg offers many different extracurricular activities that, with the right discipline and time management, we are able to get involved in. This is an important aspect of a college experience because it allows us to explore our interests when we are not striving in the classroom or on the court. Over these four years, I had the opportunity to meet my best friends whether on the court, or through getting involved in different activities and organizations. This has given my teammates and I the chance to build lasting relationships and support our friends on other teams as they strive toward the same goal that we work toward: a conference championship. As competitors, we understand the excitement of success, and are happy that we have the chance to show our school spirit by supporting our fellow Mules and friends. Without Muhlenberg College, I would not have had the opportunity to be part

“Over the past three seasons, our team has continued to improve and each year we have been more successful than the previous year. Maintaining the success of the team has largely been a result of the continuous strong work ethic demonstrated by each member of the team. Practicing every day can be exhausting, especially when we have several commitments other than volleyball. As a team, we know that when we step foot in the gym, volleyball becomes our priority and we must put everything else aside. As soon as one season ends, we began preparing for the next season. Spring season has made a great impact on the success of our team due to our hard work in the gym and weight room. In the summer we follow an intense workout packet in order to get in shape for the season. This year our team motto is ‘All you got, all the time.’ This is the perfect motto for our team

“These past few years for me have been all about getting the most out of my time here at Muhlenberg. I’ve met so many great people and made relationships that will last for a lifetime. time management, dedication, and how to work as a team to reach our goals. Being part of the Muhlenberg RA staff has taught me how to be a personable and genuine leader by leading from example. Both of these activities have taught me leadership, but most importantly how to relate to others and be successful as a whole. Being a team player is not only helpful in college athletics, but relates to our future careers and professional lives that will all rely on good team chemistry in some form, in order to progress. Time management was one of the most important skills I’ve developed throughout my college career; having a healthy balance of work, school and play is absolutely the key to success.”

Mules on the Move Travel has long been an important component of the Muhlenberg volleyball program. The Mules have made a number of out-of-region trips since 2000, traveling to Marietta, Ohio (2011), various places in Massachusetts (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010), San Antonio (2005), Pittsburgh (2002), Daytona Beach (2002) and Memphis (2013). This season the team will make a trip to Potsdam, N.Y. to play in the Clarkson Golden Knights Invitational.

Many Mule volleyball players also have participated in the College’s outstanding study-abroad program. In a world that is becoming increasingly interdependent, study abroad represents a significant means by which students may better prepare themselves to face challenges of the future. Muhlenberg College encourages students in all majors to study overseas at quality institutions in Europe, Australia, Asia, Latin America and Africa. Seniors Vanessa Pulice and Joanne Josephson each traveled overseas this past spring. Pulice spent the semester down under in Sydney, Australia, while Josephson studied in Barcelona, Spain. Classmate Chelsea Kaser stayed in the states during the spring, but ventured to Washington, D.C., for the semester.

Positive Outcomes: A Muhlenberg education provides a powerful launching pad to graduate school and entry- level careers. The College’s success rates with both law school and medical school placement are regularly over 90%. In addition, many Muhlenberg students go on to master’s and doctoral programs each year. Muhlenberg grads also go on to a full range of employment opportunities, from America’s largest banks and accounting firms to its “blue chip” business concerns, from the most prominent social and helping agencies to schools, government and familyowned businesses, and from a variety of media, writing and advertising positions to work in the performing and fine arts.

Muhlenberg Athletics centennial conference
Muhlenberg College sponsors a comprehensive 22-sport intercollegiate athletics program. The Mules compete in the Centennial Conference in all sports and are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III. Muhlenberg’s sports program is designed to offer quality competitive experiences for the serious athlete, with opportunities for outstanding teams and individuals to advance to national Division III championships. However, given the breadth of the program, opportunities also exist for the unrecruited athlete to participate in varsity sports. Muhlenberg has excellent on-campus athletic facilities.
