ARCHITECTURE DESIGN

STORY. THE ESSENCE OF PLACE

This Portfolio represents a selection of professional and academic works realized over the past 3 years. I have a Bachelor Degree in Architecture at Taylor’s University, Malaysia. This experience gave me the possibility to increase my technical and design skills as well as improving team working skills with the idea of sustainability in place. I am currently living and working in Kuching, Sarawak. Passion for Architecture pushed me to change country, exploring different ways of approaching the project. I am in a constant search for gaining new knowledge through reading, drawing, modelling, designing and practicing.

CORE DESIGN STATEMENT Story. The Essence of Place. People once asked me: “Why did you choose architecture?’ I couldnt find an asnwer for that. Maybe back then it was merely an interest, and passion for buildings with different styles and meanings. Design comes in different shape and sizes but architecture is another level above all; it talks about a history, a story of our ancestors who helped shaped our society into what it is today. Magnificient building have been built one after another and every one of them has a story to tell, needs to serve and in time, memories which individuals would precious dearly. Essence of a space are glimpse into space where the mood or emotion protrayed are emphasized and elements that are unique to the area remebered as memories. As quoted by Daniel Libeskind ‘In a strange way, architecture is really an unfinished thing, because even though the building is finished, it takes in a new life. It becomes part of a new life, it becomes part of a new dynamic: how people will occupy it, use it, think about it...’ This quote inspires me throughout my semesters’ works, I’ve always bear in mind the importance of the root and culture of a society that brings life and meaning to a bare empty building. Every set of design proposal is unique to its site, culture and history. THerefore, i feel intimate with the very ground that have been hiolding all of us since the beginning of life as it is the main reason behind all design intention(link history and culture to form stories or memories) I strongly believed that producing good architecture need not be fanciful and iconic but more subtle and humble in approach. Building which do not relate to the site or any inhabitants to the place are considered eye-sore and bring no meaning to it. Only when the design is fully incorporated and merges with culture and lifestyle then it creates impact and value.

To produce good design, one would also have to master the 5 senses in which all of them compliment the site. Clever use of lighting and spatial planning are crucial in creating spaces which captures the essence of the place, giving life and emotions to spaces. Tadao Ando once said: “You can’t really say what is beautiful about a place, but the image of the place will remain vividly with you...” With this quote in mind, I have been experimenting with the 5 senses to achieve a memorable space which people would remember for life. These are highly concern with the way people live through architecture in which design take into account of human interaction with the architecture produced. When people interact with things that they are more familiarize with they would experience more intimately than those which are alien to them. Architecture is a combination of everything and one need to master them in order to truly understand the real meaning of architecture for humanity. This trigger my desire to know more and understand what are the means to create a better future in architecture. With the help of my recent internship with Archicentre, their philosophies have greatly influenced me and drive my passion towards creating quality spaces. Self improvement on knowledge and updates on latest information have been helpful and had been a great asset in fueling my design ideas. With this in mind, there’s more to explore and stories to be told; let the imagination run wild.

QUALITIES I graduated as an architecture student at Taylor’s University where i gained the technical skills in construction consideration, detail drawings and environmental comfort analysis. I consolidated my strong design skills by using the most required 2D and 3D software as well as rendering programs, and most fundamentally to sketch and draw manually. Through practice, I increased a solid problem solving orientation. I see myself as a passionate, energetic and honest designer. Architecture fascinates me not just creating spaces but also creation of bond between the users and the space. Buildings are objects that personisify and embody the diverse cultures that exists today. My Chinese background allows me to focus on the attention to details, incorportation of traditional construction methods and materials to expand my point of view and improve the quality of my work.

05 JOURNEY OF THE 5 SENSES

01 ARCHITECTURE & COMMUNITY The idea of this building is to combine the “land” and “water” into this building. As the site was full with greenery and water, cycling camp is promoted as the programme of the building. People are able to cycle not only on the site but also inside the building and on the lake too. The building was designed to be as transparent as possible to avoid any missing green view of the site. Ramp as the main circulation spine for people to cycle up the building. The building also act as a water filter for filter the polluted lake water.

Kelana Jaya Park Along at the LDP highway several kilometers from Subang Jaya and Petaling Jaya, the park overlooks an urban development due to urbanization. Hence it become the links between the Damansara and puchong district. At the 15th century, the site was a mining district. Along the years to come, the current lakes were mining sites that eventually filled up with water due to rain and runoffs.

Issues found on site during day time and night time

Activities & user groups on site on different time

A place where people can cycling and camp. Ramp connected from ground floor to roof top allow people to cycle till the top floor. Roof top allows for open air (roof top) camping. Lodging is also provided. Cycling is encouraged throughout the building and the site. People can not only cycling on land but also on water.

Design Sketches

A ramp connected from ground floor to roof top allows people to cycle till the top floor. Water fountain in the building helps cool down the temperature and also as a water purification method for the lake water by means of oxification and filtration system. Open design is used to allow for maximum ventilation and also panaromic view towards the site. The floor plates increases from bottom to top, providing shades for the building.

Simple construction and straight forward design idea allow the occupants to use the site effeciently. Also these would impact the lifestyle and increase awareness of how simple methods can help reduce pollution. Thus creating a healthier licing environment for the users. A simple intention and design would help to bring memories and life with the help of the program provided. In time, it would be remebered as a place for life and gathering.

02 ARCHITECTURE & CULTURE Graffiti is one of the issue of the site which gives me an idea of doing a graffiti art gallery and hostel. In my opinion, instead of treating graffiti as an issue, promote it to be an art would be channel positive outcomes. The building will be a place for the graffiti artist to communicate and exhibit their art piece. Walls are created as much as possible for the artist having more spaces to do their artwork. Artist are allowed to create their artwork not only inside the building, but also outside of the building.

KEY PLAN

Jalan H.S Lee was known as High Street due to its higher grounds and was one of the early streets. The shophouses can be dating back to the mid-1880s. The shophouses were designed for the practical lifestyle where occupants lived upstairs and worked downstairs. The typical shophouse had a short frontage but with a depth of two to three times its width. The owner was required to set his building back in order to accommodate, what we call ‘the five-foot walkway’. The strong Chinese influence in this street with many facades adorned with small octagonal feng shui (geomancy) mirrors. The mirrors are placed there by the shopkeepers or owners to evil spirits.

Nowadays, the street level was raised over the years due to frequent repaving roads. This shows that the lower the walkway, the older the shophouses. Many old shophouses are being demolished or refurbished. According to statistics available, the total of pre-war buildings in KL is only 2,500. And even so, the numbers are falling fast. With this form of passive conservation efforts having been abandoned, there is no telling what plans will be in store for the historical monuments.

MASSING STRATEGIES

- Divide the building in few blocks to create direct access to backalley for easy access to the carpark behind and also for allow sunlight to go in building

- Create a barrier for reduce noise and sound pollution from the street -Remain the 5 foot way of the site

- Create opening for the sunlight go into building and create direct access to backalley. - Create public gathering space at for reduce noise and sound pollution SOUND ANALYSIS @ 5PM

- Create softscape on the roof top - Playing levels to create continuous feeling to street of the site

- Create opening to allow sunlights go into building SUN PATH DIAGRAM @10AM

in order to create a space for a gallery and toaccomodate for guests, lighting and sound analysis have been carry out to provide adequate lighting and acceptable sound tolerance for each space. Diffused natural lighting is much prefered with the help of PSALI and minimal echolation for spaces with human residence.

03 ARCHITECTURE & SYMBOLISM Chinese temples are sacred places where offerings are offered and prayers were made. Therefore it´s architecture is of different scale compared to our common architecture language. Temple design is a teadious and of high craftmanship which represents an important culture and each one of them tells a story of time and place.

A careful study of each temple can give an idea of how old is the chinese community around the area and the richness in culuture it holds within the chinese community.Temples are of bigger scale as compared normal building,it´s knows as ´God Scale´ where spaces are deisgn for god and spirits whichserves a higher purposes in most of our lives.

Different icons and statues are a symbol and carries a meaning to it. The existing of temple itself symbolises wealth and prosperity of the community as well as a symbol to unites its people. It is a place of gathering.

Model

Without proper documentation of these historical buildings, all would be lost as time passes by. A detailed measured drawing were conducted and a thorough analysis and report of the temples have been recorded in order to preserve these heritage and historywhich have much contribute to Chinese evolution in South East Asian Country.

02 ARCHITECTURE & NATURE This is a tea retreat project which was developed from site inspiration and Indian tea culture. According to India tea culture, they have a drinking culture in which right after they finish their tea, they threw their clay cup to the ground smashing them to pieces. This unique culture become the main idea of this project by expressing it in irregular form to represent the broken pieces of the broken tea cup.

The tea branches and the root of the tree on site gives the impression of a cycle in which fallen leaves from the branch would turn to nutrients for the roots once it’s decomposed in the earth to form new leaves; continuity. Like every plant, they sprout from the ground and grows strong and firm from the ground. Hence, an irregular shell was designed to represent the idea of mother earth´s embrace and also practically act as a shading device for the building.

She got up this morning, sun shining through the blind, she took a look in the mirror, and something crossed her mind.

She went to sleep that night, tried to prepare for the days ahead, if she looks real careful, you’re there on your side of the bed.

You weren’t there to see her wake, she didn’t see your smile, for when she does she feels like, her days are all worthwhile.

Stroke her hair and tell her, that no matter what life throws, you have a love like no other, in death it continues to grow.

She went into work today, kids running through the halls, she looked at plans for tomorrow, and is sad when nobody calls.

She got up this morning, sun shining through the blind, she took a look in the mirror, and something crossed her mind.

She got in her car to go home today, on the radio she heard a song, it reminded her of you, and how hurtful it is you’re gone.

You WERE there to see her wake, and she could see your smile, and when she did she realized, you’re only absent for a while.

She went out with a friend tonight, smiled and wore a brave face, for all she really wants in life, is to have you in this place.

She closes her eyes and in the dark, she knows she’ll see you again, the only thing that troubles her, is not being able to say when?

She gets a daunting feeling, one which won’t disappear, what’s the point in all of this? what’s the point when you’re not here?

For now she must be patient, and one day her time will come, and you’ll be there to take her hand, and safely guide her home.

05 JOURNEY OF THE 5 SENSES This poem narrate about a family which is no longer complete after the death of the writer´s father. The loss of the father caused the mother and daughter to rely on each other. Her mother pretended that she had walked through the pain but the feeling of missing her husband had not faded away. Every moment in life became imperfect and miserable. Although the daughter suffered the pain as her mother, she had to stand up and give her mother hope to live her life again.

From the poem, some keyword had been derived out which is “broken”, “hope”, “conceal” and “loss”. With these keywords, the idea of this project has been come out which is an underground (con cealed) maze (loss) with a big tree (hope) at the centre of the maze as a guide. This project was built up by using irregular size of cube (broken) and was arrange randomly and leading the user to the tree.
